[Ontbirds] Bohemian Waxwing at Pelee
It's been a birdy day at Pelee today! Josh Vandermeulen and I are now watching a beautiful Bohemian Waxwing on the footpath that runs south of the Delaurier parking lot adjacent to the old administration building field, so roughly half between the chinquapin trail and the delaurier parkinlot. Its in a flock of about 80 cedar waxwings. There's big numbers of cedar's around today so you might need to be patient and do a lot of careful looking. Good luck, Steve and Josh ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Tundra Swans
And small flock of Tundra Swans was flying just west of the Townsend Sewage Lagoons this afternoon. They were looking for a harvested corn field to set down in. [Ontbirds] Tufted Titmouse at Rattray Marsh
This afternoon I found a Tufted Titmouse with a large group of Black- capped Chickadee working the woods on both sides of Sheridan Creek just upstream from the lower pedestrian bridge. I first found it by its loud 'peter' call and later got some good views of it from the Meadow Trail that runs though the ne part of the woods. Roy Plant who was birding marsh told me that he and several other birders had found what was likely this bird near the outlet of the marsh to the lake about three weeks ago. Direction: Access the area from the south end of Bexhill which runs south of Lakeshore just east of Clarkson. From the QEW drive south on either South Down Road/Erin Mills Parkway or Mississauga Road. [Ontbirds] Nelson's Gull, Winchester
A first winter hybrid Glaucous x Herring Gull was present among a flock of large gulls on the Winchester Lagoon this afternoon. The bird resembles a Glaucous-winged Gull but has the classic pink based bill of a Glaucous. Winchester Lagoons are located just south of the town of Winchester along Ottawa Street. [Ontbirds] Gyrfalcon - Sandbanks Prov. Park
At the end of another gorgeous day of late fall birding in Prince Edward County, I decided to scope the waterfowl in West Lake at the north end of Sandbanks Provincial Park and was treated to a dark/grey phase Gyrfalcon attempting an (unsuccessful) horizontal chase of a scaup. The Gyr circled back and passed in front of me (at the very south end of West Lake) then followed the dune ridge northward and perched in a large leafless tree perhaps 1 km away, where it sat for several minutes before continuing north along the dune ridge out of view (towards Presqu'ile.-- great prediction in this week's report, Fred!!). Jarmo Sandbanks Provincial Park is reached by taking Hwy 62 south from the 401 at Belleville. Follow signs to County Rd 12, which takes you to the park. [Ontbirds] Update: Ross' Gull still present at Chambly, Québec
Hello everyone, Sunny, calm (in fact, nearly tropical) conditions enhanced the experience for many birders from Quebec, Ontario and the U.S. who came to Chambly to see the Ross's Gull today. 'Twas a bit of a chase, as the gull was not immediately present upon the arrival of three Ottawa and two New York birders at ~ 12:15 PM. However, there were reports from others that the gull had been seen in the AM, and was likely in the sewage lagoons at the municipal composting site (Boul. Industriel opposite #2417). At approx. 1:30 the bird was seen flying to the lake at Fort Chambly, and it spent approx. 1 hour on the lake before it flew back to the lagoons. Our Ottawa contingent saw it (distantly) on the lake, then (excellently) on the first pond, where it was feeding with several Bonaparte's and Ring-billed Gulls. It was still present when we departed ~ 3:15 PM. Though there was no staff at the municipal site today, the gate was open and birders were able to walk up and have good views of the 1st lagoon. Thanks to Langis Sirois for the very helpful information he posted to ONTBIRDS yesterday, and for the directions below: For information on recent observations, you can visit the web site of the Page des oiseaux rares of the Regroupement Québec-Oiseaux http://www.quebecoiseaux.org/index.php?option=com_oiseauxraresItemid=133lang=fr (NOTE: this web site is in French, but Google can translate it well enough). Directions: from Ontario, either from the 401 or the 417, take the new highway 30 and exit at highway 10 that is Autoroute des Cantons de l'Est. Go in the East direction on highway 10 and exit at Boul Fréchette ; go North on Fréchette and turn right on Boul Franquet, then right on Boul Industriel. To go to Fort Chambly, continue on Fréchette to Avenue Bourgogne and turn right on Bourgogne, or if you are on Industriel, go North, turn left on Boul de Périgny then right on Fréchette and right on Bourgogne.
