[Ontbirds] Rusty Blackbirds, Rough-Legged Hawk - Whitby

2014-01-19 Thread Jack Alvo
After seeing the Great Gray Owl in Brooklin, I went south on Lakeridge Road
and found a flock of 20+ Rusty Blackbirds by the south of the road, about
200 meters south of Lakeridge and Bayly/Victoria. They flew off to nearby
trees and I had the feeling that they may be hanging around the area.

I had stopped because there were several hundred Canada Geese lifting up off
the adjacent fields, apparently flushed by a Rough-Legged Hawk that flew
over as I got out of the car. This was around 3:45 today.

[Ontbirds] Timmins - American Three-toed & Black-backed Woodpeckers

2014-01-19 Thread Lev Frid
Hey folks,

Kyle Holloway and I ventured into Timmins with hopes of locating Three-toed
Woodpeckers today, and despite at times treacherous weather conditions, we
were not disappointed.

We snowshoed about 300 metres into appropriate-looking habitat on the west
side of HW 144 near the Cache Lake Road intersection. The snow was
extremely deep in some spots, so take caution. It was snowing heavily but
after some determined squeaking and compromised owl sounds, a pair of
raging Black-backed Woodpeckers emerged from the woods, and with them was a
male American Three-toed Woodpecker.

We enjoyed prolonged views of the birds, and at one point the males of both
species were display-drumming side-by-side on a dead aspen. Spectacular!

The weather took a turn for the worst and we had a long drive home so we
left shortly afterwards, but the habitat was great all along the Cache Lake
Road and the nearby highway so there's likely more of both birds around.
The only other birds were a pair of White-winged Crossbills on Hw 144 and
some miserable-looking ravens.

Directions: Timmins is reached via Highway 144 from Sudbury or 11 and 101
from North Bay. The habitat for the birds was especially good at the North
end of 114 before it intersects with 101.

Good Birding!

[Ontbirds] Eastern Ontario: Nothern Shrikes

2014-01-19 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Just realized I forgot to mention in my last post the movement of Northern
Shrikes. On January 16th I observed 9 Northern Shrikes west of Ottawa while
searching for Snowy Owls. This is the largest single day total I've ever
recorded in the Ottawa-Gatineau area in +40 yrs. The following day I found 5
shrikes northwest of Ottawa. There definitely appears to be a southward
movement of Northern Shrikes.
Good birding,

[Ontbirds] Eastern Ontario: Snowy Owls and Northern Shrikes

2014-01-19 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Just back from a weekend of birding various areas in eastern Ontario. The Snowy
Owl continues to be found through most of the region in suitable habitat. Today
on Wolfe Island we counted 13 Snowy Owls all on the west side of the island.
All individuals appeared to be juvenile birds and very nervous. Most
individuals flushed easily. Though the winds were out of the southwest at
30-35 km's with blowing snow most birds were perched on telephone poles, farm
buildings and a few on the ground. Also saw 650+ Snow Buntings and a couple of
Horned Lark. There was no open water except for the ice choked ferry channel.
Most side roads had numerous snow drifts. On Saturday out in the Ste. Rose area
there were 10+ Snowy Owls including a very tame individual that didn't flush
even with 20+ photographers around it. This is likely one of the regularly
baited Snowy Owls. In the Chesterville area another 5+ Snowy Owls were
observed. It appears that many of these owls have set up a winter territory sin
ce they were using the same perches back on December 28th. At the DuPont
Plant's warm water lagoon there were 2 Mute Swan, 40+ Gadwall, 1 male
Ring-necked Duck, and 8 American Coot. If you're still looking for Snowy Owls
check your local airport! While leading a birding tour in Newfoundland and not
seeing any, I finally got my Snowy Owl for NL while taxiing down the runway.
When we landed home 3 were present!

Good birding,
Bruce

[Ontbirds] Spotted Towhee Update for Glen Williams, Jan 19th, 2014

2014-01-19 Thread Len M
Hey birders,

Sorry about my brief message yesterday. I was just trying to get word out that
the bird was still being seen under the feeders at 571 Main Street, Glen
Williams. I got word from Rich Poort that the bird was re-seen as well later
yesterday evening.

A few more details, as I have gotten many requests for info regarding my post
and an unfriendly neighbour.

We actually saw the bird a couple houses down on the same side of the street,
but right at the intersection of the closes side street. Most of these houses
have feeders up so the bird was actually seen in a few yards during our visit.
It appeared to feed at 571, then it made its way into the backs of the next few
houses, before hiding in a dense tangle behind the house with green siding at
the closest intersection. The homeowner of the green house seemed quite put off
by our presence despite the fact that we were simply observing from the roads.
This homeowner came out to photograph us(she made sure she got a picture of
each one of us), seemed very agitated for some reason, and did not respond to
us when we said hello and tried to inform here why we were in the
neighbourhood. We made several attempts at communication.

This is just an FYI for those going today, please stay on the road if the bird
goes to this house.

On a a more pleasant note, another lovely local fellow who was quite excited
about the bird explained to some of us that it has actually been coming to his
feeders since early December! wow!

So enjoy the bird today if you go, he`s a real beaut!
