Observation start time: 07:00:00
Observation end time: 15:00:00
Total observation time: 8 hours

Official Counter:Natalie Cypher

Observers:Andrew Sturgess, Patrick Mulawa, Rosemary Brady

Visitors:
A couple interested folks passed by today and asked questions, but only the
regular crew of counters participated in the count today.

Weather:
Today was unseasonably warm, with a high reaching 80F. Moderate steady SSW
winds persisted throughout the day.

Raptor Observations:
Today was not particularly exciting for migrant raptors - we did have a
trickling of Sharp-shinned Hawks, and a couple of Red-tailed Hawks and
Merlins. Turkey Vulture total was 300 birds, the majority of which came
through late morning. Afternoon hours were quite slow.

Non-raptor Observations:
Despite the low numbers of raptors, Red-winged Blackbirds made a big push
during the first hour of the count, with approximately 3670 passing over
the count site within the first hour of the count. Additionally,
Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Brown Creepers could be heard in the surrounding
trees, and a couple of Yellow-rumped Warblers kept us company in a nearby
tree. Our first flock of migrant Crows passed by the site this afternoon,
15 total.

Predictions:
Unfortunately tomorrow should be more of the same, raptor-wise. Weather
will be warm again with continuing south winds, and a chance of rain in the
afternoon. High raptor numbers should not be expected.

[Ontbirds] 18 Greater White-fronted Geese, Pittock Lake, Oct 17

2016-10-17 Thread JAMES HOLDSWORTH
Hey,

Obviously part of the mega-flight of White-fronts in the extreme south-west, I
had 18 this morning at Pittock Lake, about 1 km east of the Roth Park entrance
- 8 adults with the rest YOY. Also present was a decent waterbird collection -
6 Cacklers, one ad.white morph Snow Goose, 7 basic Horned Grebe, 4 Redhead, 30
Ruddies and 40 Common Merganser.

I half-expected to find my inbox jammed with White-front reports, given how
widespread the incursion seems to be. The 18 found this morning could be just a
fraction of birds present locally, as 90% of the Pittock goose flocks were
still out feeding in adjacent fields. I'll check back later to check numbers as
birds start returning to the reservoir.

Subject: Re: [Ontbirds] Eurasian Collared Dove in Innisfil

Good morning Ontbirders,

A quick side-route to work this morning took me to 1698 Innisfil Beach Road
(Hewitt Creek Farms), and upon turning into the driveway, I immediately
spotted a Eurasian Collared Dove sitting on the wires. I stopped and opened
the windows, within seconds I could hear the 2nd bird calling it's typical
"coo-coo-COO-coo" call. The calling bird then flew towards the barn (and
likely grain on the ground but I didn't drive any further) while the 1st
bird stayed on the wire. The first bird then flew down to the driveway for
a minute or two before flying to where the 2nd bird had landed near the
barn.

Thanks Caleb for letting us know about this/these birds!

Regards & good birding,
Frank Pinilla
RIchmond Hill, ON

DIRECTIONS:
>From Hwy 400 take the Innisfil Beach Road exit (exit #85), go east on
Innisfil Beach Rd. approximately 7.5km, you will pass Yonge Street and
beyond that you'll see Hewitt Creek Farms on the left - there are two sets
of barns about 1.4km apart both owned by the same landowner, the birds are
at the 2nd set of Hewitt Creek Farms barns - you'll see the driveway
numbered 1698. The bird that was calling was somewhere in the trees in the
backyard of the house that sits right next to the farm driveway.

[Ontbirds] Long Sault: Eurasian Wigeons

2016-10-17 Thread Jon Ruddy
Hi there

I have so far tallied three Eurasian Wigeons this morning. One first basic
male(?)/very rufous female with American Wigeons at Farran Park; and two males
(adult and immature) with American Wigeons, Gadwall and a surprise three female
Black Scoters, seen along Long Sault Parkway, from Woodland Campground. The
wigeons were concentrated on the N side of Woodland and viewed from the beach.

I will post photos with uploaded eBird checklists this evening.

Directions: from 401, take exit 770 to Ingleside. Continue S to Highway 2. From
Hwy 2, head W to Farran Park Rd. Farran Park is located there. From Farran
Park, head E on Hwy 2 to Long Sault Parkway. Take Long Sault to Woodland
Campsite entrance, then walk N along gravel road to beach lookout. There are no
parking signs at the entrance of Woodland; I parked along the side of the
parkway.
