Hi Allan Can you give me a little information on the location and
predator protection for the nest box that was predated. Was it on a free
standing pole with baffle. Those kind of details. Thanks Bill Read

Hi Mark For your interest. I checked Hamilton Windermere basin TRES grids
yesterday. May 3. There were 15 nests with eggs some with 5 .I expect
they will stop laying over the weekend but I may check those boxes on
Monday to see. I expect bluebird nestling mortality over the weekend. Bill

[Ontbirds] chimney swifts at dickson school cambridge

2012-08-28 Thread Bill Read
Hi OntbirdersThe Dickson Chimney Swift numbers dropped to 30 last night
from 462 a few days before. At the end of the evening 7 exited the chimney and
did not re-enter. They must have gone to another roost close by as it was
almost dark. We are not sure if they have migrated or are using another roost.
Since we are not seeing very many they have probably moved further on. We had
the largest numbers when they were feeding above this location on flying ants.
Numbers the last eleven days have been as follows Aug 17-422, Aug 18-417, Aug
19-431, Aug 20-384, Aug 21-443, Aug 22-447, Aug 23-462, Aug 24-261, Aug 25-325,
Aug 26-64, Aug 27-30. We started with 66 on August 1st. Thanks to everyone who
has been involved counting the swifts and whatever else flies by. Bill Read

[Ontbirds] dickson school chimney swifts

2012-08-23 Thread Bill Read
Hi Ontbirders A good night at the Dickson school Chimney Swift roost with 462
along with 30 nighthawks The CHSW were flying very high and we believe feeding
on very small flying ants which were everywhere. It was difficult counting
them as they had a late entry with many going in at the same time. Thanks to
Jerry Guenther and Susan Fogo for their counting skills. We may not have
counters over the weekend so if anyone is out they can send the count numbers
to me. Thanks Bill Read

Directions: From Highway 24 (Hespeler Road/Water St.) go to Concession Street.
Turn west on Concession, cross the bridge, and turn north on Grand Ave. Turn
left at the second street on the left, St. Andrews. The school is located at 65
St. Andrews St. Access the parking area (and chimney), by driving past the
school, turning left on Fraser St., then left at the first street. This dead
ends at the school.

Great parking available, bring a lawn chair for comfortable viewing. Arrive
about 1.5 hours before dusk to watch the birds circling the building, before
they dive into the chimney.

[Ontbirds] great egret

Hi Ont Birders I observed 9 Great Egrets in a large pond near the Cambridge
Tim Horton camp around 5.30 pm today. There were 2 Solitary Sandpipers as
well. Go south on Hwy 24 from Galt ( Cambridge ) Go past the cut off to Glen
Morris ( which veers off to the right ) and go up the hill. When you get to the
top of the hill you will be turning left on Glen Morris Road, It is not marked
but I believe there is a sign to the Tim Horton camp. Go about 1 km just past
the Tim Horton camp and the pond is on the left or north side. Bill Read

[Ontbirds] chimney swift roost

2012-08-14 Thread Bill Read
Hi Ont birdersLast night, August 13th David Gascoigne, John Litchy and
myself monitored the Dickson school Chimney Swift roost site in Cambridge.
Swift numbers have been building from 66 on August 2nd to 336 on August 12th.
Gail Hill and Genie Berger counted 66 on August 2nd. Last nights activity was
very different from previous nights as the swifts circled the chimney for a
longer period and most only went in close to dusk. It was quite a spectacle to
see between 200 to 300 swifts flying in the air at the same time. The majority
( about 75% ) went in over a 3-4 minute period. This made it difficult to count
them. Our total was 366. We also had 4 Common Nighthawks. On previous nights
they arrived over a 1 hour period and went in the south chimney in small groups
which made it easier to count them. Our peak count last year was 326 on August
27th. We did not start monitoring until August 26th last year ( 300 on the 26th
) so it will be interesting to see how the numbers build over the next week
and a half. This school is a heritage building and is apparently slated to be
condominiums after the next and last school year. Bill Read

[Ontbirds] Chimney Swifts and Common Nighthawks

2011-08-26 Thread Bill Read
Hi Everyone I spent from 7.35 pm to 8.25 pm tonight -August 26, 2011 at
Dickson Public school in Galt monitoring a Chimney Swift roost site. The school
is located at 65 St Andrews Street in Galt- Cambridge. This is 1 block west of
the Southworks mall which is along the Grand River. A large chimney is located
on the south side of the school. During the first part before the Chimney
Swifts started entering the chimney I observed 100 Common Nighthawks heading
south along the west side of the Grand river. While I was counting Chimney
Swifts another large group flew over of about 25 for a count of 125. I counted
around 300 chimney swifts entering the chimney. I plan to monitor the site on
Saturday . Bill Read www.oebs.ca

[Ontbirds] mountain bluebird

Hi EveryoneI visited the winery at 1025 Ridge Road yesterday after a short
visit to the beamer hawk watch. No MOBL but there was a merlin at the back
perched in the scrubby area beyond the vineyard. Most likely a migrant. You
could probably see almost as many raptors here as you could at the beamer hawk
watch as it is right on the flight path. There is to much snow on the ground
at the winery and the MOBL has probably gone somewhere else to feed. Hopefully
it will return when we get some warmer weather and some of the snow melts. I
put up a couple of temporary nest boxes at the back. I expect it will attempt
to nest with a male EABL somewhere in this area. Bill Read

[Ontbirds] white winged crossbills

2009-01-01 Thread Bill Read
Hi everyone On December 30th 2008 I observed a flock of about 60 White
Winged crossbills 4 km west of Port Rowan on regional road 42. They appeared to
be feeding on the buds of deciduous trees on both sides of the road. Possibly
some kind of alder? On a return visit on January 1st they were in the same area
feeding on the cones of spruce trees on the north side of the road. I believe
these to be Norwegian Spruce. The spruce were about 20 to 25 feet high. Cones
littered the area under the trees. Many of the birds were picking up grit off
the road as I watched them. They were fairly tame and responded to pishing.
Unfortunately about 20 had been hit by cars. I was able to collect 12 good
specimens, 7 male and 5 female which I will give to Mark Peck. I estimated the
flock to be 200 to 250 individuals. In the hand they were much bigger than I
expected at around 25 grams. Many regions in Ontario set records for
precipitation in 2008 which has produced abundant wild fruit and cone crops. Do
White winged crossbills come south to take advantage of this abundance or is it
because of a lack of cones in the north and it is only a coincidence that
Southern Ontario has an abundant cone crop this year? I would suggest it is
the latter. Bill Read www.oebs.ca
