[Ontbirds] Cattle Egret-Grey County-Southgate

2019-09-23 Thread Dan MacNeal via ONTBIRDS
Hey there, there is a Cattle Egret in the south end of Grey County along
Southgate Rd 8. It is on the back side of a pond on the north side of the rd
about 400m off the rd past a small island in the pond. Park here (44.0643856,
-80.4368483) and look north.
Probably best to just copy those coordinates in google maps search bar for
directions but here are directions from Shelburne
Take Hwy 89 west out of Shelburne
Travel about 16-17km west then turn right onto Grey Rd 8
Go north on Grey Rd 8 about 4km and turn left onto Southgate rd 8
Travel west about 2.3 km and look for the pond on the north side just past a
gate with for sales sign and green number 086386.

Good birding and good luck.

[Ontbirds] Curlew Sandpiper- Belwood- Wellington County

2019-09-16 Thread Dan MacNeal via ONTBIRDS
Hey there I was able to re-find the Curlew Sandpiper this morning found by Mike
Cadman yesterday. The bird was initially found about 1km upstream of the
Broadway St Bridge but flushed with some Killdeer and is now about 350m
upstream from the bridge on a rocky island in the middle of the river.

Directions from Guelph take 124 east out of Guelph then turn left and go north
on to 26(this becomes broadway st) take the last right before the bridge on to
side rd 10. You can park her and walk to the rivers edge or continue for about
300m and park at the edge of the rd by an opening in the trees to get down to
the water.

Amazing find Mike!

[Ontbirds] Townsends Solitaire--Guelph-- Wellington County

2017-12-11 Thread Dan MacNeal via ONTBIRDS
Hello all,

A Townsend's Solitaire was found today at the Guelph Lake Nature Centre on
Conservation Rd by Greg Meredith and Ann Schletz.

Mike Cadman and myself viewed to bird around 4 pm. It was seen below the Nature
Centre parking area close to a line of cedars at the edge of the lake.

There is a good food supply so chances are it may stick around. This is
basically the same area as the 2014 Varied Thrush but closer to the nature
centre.

Not sure about access during the day as the centre runs classes

Directions:

Take Victoria Rd N out of Guelph which becomes Wellington Rd 38

Turn Right onto Conservation Rd, the nature centre parking lot is about 1km on
the right (south side) just after the gate for the dam.

Good birding!

One thing I should add is if you are coming through Shelburne there are 2 4th

The bird is still here and showing well feeding in the water across the river
about 300 metres past (west of) the rail bridge. It's viewable from a lookout
where there is a bench down close to the river. This is 30 meters past the

probable female was seen flying low of the field on the north side of the road.

Hello all,

Last night at about 7:30pm a small group of us had a pair of White Pelicans
lift off the water and fly overhead while we were on The Island at Guelph
Lake Conservation Area...definitely a very uncommon sighting on the lake,
and a good-looking pair of birds! Hopefully they stay around for a bit.
Observers were Chris Earley, Jiffy Gibson, Jenn Bock, Dav Nemethy-Fekete
and myself.

Good birding!

its end at Woodlawn Rd. and turn right. In approximately 4km turn left on

[Ontbirds] Eurasian Collared-Dove, Guelph, Wellington County

2016-07-09 Thread Dan MacNeal
Hello all. Late post.
The possible Eurasian Collared-Dove that was reported on the Wellbirds Listserv
today found by Mike Lepage was still present this evening. I took several
photos and some video/audio and after checking with several people and sources
I'm confident that it is a Eurasian Collared-Dove and not an African Collared
Dove.
Here's a link to my ebird checklist with a couple photos and audio.
http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist/S30623534
The bird was hanging around a residential neighborhood in Guelph on the
rooftops of the houses. It stuck around the houses closest to the intersection
of Elmira Rd S and Stephanie Dr. It was calling often and flying from roof to
roof.
Directions from the 401
Take highway 6(the hanlon expy) north. Turn left on Paisley Rd, left on Elmira
Rd S and then left on Stephanie and your there.

[Ontbirds] Dickcissel, Amaranth-Dufferin County

2014-05-22 Thread Dan MacNeal via ONTBIRDS
I had a female Dickcissel on my way home from work today at 4:50pm on 8th line
of Amaranth between side Rds 15 and 20. The bird flew off to the other side of
the rd just as I was focusing with my camera. I tried for 10 minutes to
relocate but had no luck.
On a side note also had a Red-headed Woodpecker around noon at a coworkers
house on 10th line of Amaranth. The bird was coming to his suet feeder.

Not sure of the reliability of the Dickcissel staying in the same spot.
But here are Directions:
From Authur take highway 109 (9) east approximately 23km take 8th line north,
second left after 25(trafalgar). Bird was seen between 15 and 20 side Rds on
eighth line. About 150 m after the last house on the right when traveling
north. Near a small bridge for a drainage ditch. Birds flew from the west side
of the rd to the east towards open field or low thick scrub bush just north of
the drainage ditch.

Good birding!

Hello ontbirders,

I was able to locate 2 of the Smiths Longspurs this morning at approximately
7:00 am. They were in the grassy field again and were vocal but difficult to
spot.
Thanks for the tip about the boots!

Good birding,

The Longspurs have been in the thicker green grass on the west side of Mersea
road 21 just north of road 2. Across from the White House on the right. Just

[Ontbirds] Varied Thrush continues at Guelph Lake dam

2014-02-05 Thread Dan MacNeal
The Varied Thrush was present this morning at 8:00 am. It arrived shortly after
I did. I walked out to the crab apple trees and then heard it from behind me. I
turned around to see it fly and land in a large conifer across the street. It
paused for a moment and flew across almost straight at me into the crab apple
trees. It posed very nicely for several photos before it snatched an apple and
dove into the under brush!

Directions:
From 401 go north on Brock (46) right‎ on Stone Rd. Left on Victoria, right on
Conservation Rd. Dam road is on right - crab apples about ‎20 meters south of
Conservation Rd along the road over the dam.

Good Birding!

[Ontbirds] Spotted Towhee continues in Glen Williams (Halton) Jan 21

2014-01-21 Thread Dan MacNeal
571 main st Glen Williams
Sorry for the late post.
Observed the bird twice very briefly today, once when I arrived at 8:25 and
then again just before 10:30.stayed until noon with no more sitings. This was
my third attempt at seeing it.
It came in to the porch below the feeder very quick and did not stick around
long. It retreated to the fence line between the next house into dense cover or
some shrubs and cedars. I took one terrible photo not even good enough for a
record shot.

There are are least three other houses with backyard feeders very close to this
house so there are many options for feeding.

Directions
410 north continue north on hurontario for 2 km. Left on old school road
for 10 km which continues to main.
571 main
Small parking lot directly across from the house as well as a larger one for
the antiques shop across the street.

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese- Wellington County

2013-11-18 Thread Dan MacNeal
The four geese were present today at 5 pm in the Hillsburgh pond. Had checked
in the morning at 8:30 today but they were absent. They seem to leave for the
day to presumably feed in the surrounding area fields and return mid afternoon
to the pond.

Directions:

From the town of Erin, take Road 124 west to Trafalgar Rd. Go north on
Trafalgar for a few km to the village of Hillsburgh. Turn left at Station
Rd., cross the bridge and park in the park parking lot where there are 2-3
yellow buildings. Good viewing of the pond can be had from the bench just
steps from the parking lot.
