[Ontbirds]First year Cooper's Hawk, Ottawa
Saw a first year Cooper's Hawk at Britannia Woods today about 3pm. It was in a tall deciduous tree on the north side of the small bay southeast of the area where the Great-horned Owls are usually seen and at the extreme southwest corner of Mud Lake.A Pileated Woodpecker was in the same tree not far f rom the Cooper's. Directions from the Queensway: Exit onto Pinecrest Road north (exit 129), north on Pinecrest to Richmond Road, right (east) onto Richmond Road, use left lane to cross Carling Avenue, turn left (north) at the traffic light just past Carling Ave and onto Poulin Avenue. Continue to end of Poulin, turn left on Britannia Road, continue to Cassels St. and turn right, continue to end of Cassels St. opposite the Britannia Yacht Club. Turn right on the road that goes to the Britannia Water Filtration Plant and proceed (about half way to the plant) to the path entrance to Britannia Woods on your right just before Mud Lake. The path borders Mud Lake - head south (away from the Ottawa River) and stay on the main path until you get to the south end of Mud Lake. Take the path that borders the south side of Mud Lake and scan trees bordering the southwest corner of the lake. X-BeenThere: ontbirds@hwcn.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2007 00:16:39 - In some respects, birding at Presqu'ile Provincial Park has been more interesting than in any previous week this winter. At least one rarity and three species of owls have broken the spell which has made birding reports repetitive for several weeks. As part of the Brighton Winterfest activities, birders and others wanting to visit the Park will be admitted free this Sunday. Three species of swans were at the calf pasture at the end of last week, including two Tundra Swans on January 19 and a Trumpeter Swan on the following day. At least 200 Mute Swans are around the Park almost every day. Three Gadwalls were at Salt Point on January 23. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of ducks of the genus /Aythya/ that move into Presqu'ile Bay to feed whenever there is open water and then retreat to the open water of Lake Ontario at dusk to avoid being frozen in overnight. The vast majority are Greater Scaup but there are also a few Canvasbacks and plenty of Redheads, prompting the Park naturalist (actually "Natural Heritage Education Leader") to remark, "It's as good as Waterfowl Festival there now!" On January 19 there were at least four Lesser Scaup and a Ring-necked Duck at Salt Point. There is no way of knowing whether the latter was a newly returned migrant or one that had been undetected in the area since the fall, but last year an extremely mild spell in January brought one back to Presqu'ile on January 13 after several weeks of real winter. The highlight of the week for rarity-seekers was a Barrow's Goldeneye that showed up near the lighthouse on January 22 and was re-discovered east of Chatterton Point on January 24. Hooded Mergansers are occasionally seen at Presqu'ile in winter, but no one has reported seeing any since December 30. A Common Loon was still in Presqu'ile Bay on January 19, the latest date on record for the Park. Another record late date was set on January 23, when a Great Blue Heron flew past 94 Bayshore Road. There were still four American Coots present on January 24. This may prove to be the first winter in which that species successfully over-winters at Presqu'ile. An immature Bald Eagle flew past the lighthouse on January 24, and another of that species, perhaps the same one, was at the Nature Centre on the following morning. A Rough-legged Hawk flew over the calf pasture on January 24. A birder on an off-trail trek through the woods on January 20 spotted first a Great Horned Owl catching some warming rays while perched in a tree in Newcastle Woods and half a
[Ontbirds]Pied-billed Grebe near Smiths Falls
Photographed what to me was a very pretty but unusual bird yesterday about 3:30pm at the Narrows on Big Rideau Lake. Thanks to Tony Beck of Ottawa for identifying the bird as a Pied-billed Grebe in winter plumage. Directions from Smiths Falls: Hwy 15 south about 25 km to from Smiths Falls, turn right at Hwy 42 to Newboro and turn almost immediately right onto County Road 14 (this turn is about 100 ft from Hwy 15 but can be easy to miss). Continue north on CR 14 to the first bridge at the Narrows on Big Rideau Lake. The bird was in the open water on the right hand (east) side of the road/bridge. It lingered at the edge of the ice between dives. We saw it at about 3:30 pm yesterday. Don Wigle Ottawa [EMAIL PROTECTED]

FLICKER (1), SONG SPARROW (8), GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET (50+), EASTERN MEADOWLARK (3), and - in yesterday's morning's snow - the fresh tracks of four WILD TURKEYS. An unexpected surprise this morning was an OSPREY calling from the top of one of the hydro towers. There were also three WOOD DUCKS in the pond. Mary Carnahan added a COOPER'S HAWK at this location today. At about the same time that I was at the reserve Saturday (7:00 - 9:00 a.m.), Keith Dunn was checking the birding spots around Holland Landing. He had six lingering TUNDRA SWANS, two GREAT BLUE HERONS, a few N. PINTAIL and a pair of N. SHOVELERS along Hochreiter Road, plus a FOX SPARROW at the north end of Yonge Street (where it dead-ends at Silver Lakes Golf Course). The flooded fields along Hochreiter were mainly frozen when Keith was there but they were open again today and held many more birds, some of them already noted by Frank Pinella in his earlier post: PINTAIL (300), GW TEAL (200), N. SHOVELER (20), and AM. WIGEON (20). There was also a BELTED KINGFISHER rattling up and down the Holland River this afternoon, and several DC CORMORANTS flying about. I observed my second OSPREY of the day at this location around 3:00 p.m., then a third one sitting on a nesting platform beyond the dead end of Bathurst Street North half an hour later. MacKenzie Marsh in Aurora has had two pairs of HOODED MERGANSERS and several RING-NECKED DUCKS (approx. 30) all week. Yesterday several TREE SWALLOWS arrived there and, in today's milder temperatures, that number was up to at least 20. Ron Fleming, Newmarket Directions: Hochreiter Road and the north end of Bathurst Street are accessed from Yonge Street north of Newmarket (i.e. past the cluster of big box stores). Between Bradford and Newmarket (after a long descent north of the first stoplights indicating Holland Landing), you come to another stoplight indicating Bathurst Street and Queensville. Turn right, then a quick left and the road soon turns north again after crossing a railroad track. Drive straight north, past Queensville Sdrd. and you will come to a large sign for Albert's Marina. Hochreiter Road runs west and, despite the lunarlike driving conditions, is usually worth checking at this time of year. As for the Cawthra Mulock reserve, it is supposed to have limited access (which we have been trying to point out to some of the local ATV and snowmobile riders). Ideally, i
[Ontbirds]Gyrfalcon, not a Peregrine: correction (Ottawa)
On Feb. 13/06 I reported a Peregrine Falcon spotted at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. After review of some of my pictures by several experts, the consensus now is that it was a Gryfalcon. [Ontbirds]Bald Eagle, Westport (north of Kingston)
Saw a Bald Eagle and a Red-tailed Hawk at Foley Mountain near Westport today at about 3pm. Both were soaring on strong winds off of the cliffs. Directions: Take Hwy 10 north of Westport (road goes on to Perth) and turn right into Foley Mountain Conservation Area at the top of the steep hill soon after leaving Westport. Drive into first parking area on right side of road (about 500 metres). You should buy a parking sticker for $5 (we have a year-round pass for Rideau Conservation areas). Walk southwest from the parking area along the wide pathway to the Spy Rock lookout. This gives you a good view of the lake, the town and the sky above the cliffs. [Ontbirds] Correction: female Merlin, not Peregrine Falcon, east of Ottawa
After checking a new bird book and consulting with a Peregrine expert (Eve Ticknor), I believe that my report of a Peregrine Falcon east of Ottawa should be changed to a female Merlin. Apologies to anyone who went looking there today but it is a good area for other birds! Here are the directions again: Queensway east, continue on Hwy 174 east, go past Orleans mall and exit south on Trim Road, continue south to Innis, turn left (east) at Innis and take next right onto Frank Kenny Road. Continue south on Frank Kenny to Regimbald - turn left and continue to jog in road. Female merlin was seen on pole on right side of road at the jog. The best was a PALM WARBLER found by Betsy and Vicki at the pull-off on the south side of the control gates. There is a length of guiderail here which prevents vehicles from driving into the river. The warbler would go between the wooden posts and the metal guiderail to feed, presumably on spiders or insects caught in spider webs. When it was in the guiderail, the only way to see it was from the back side of the rail (i.e. from the river side). Occasionally, it would come out and sit in some nearby burdock, very close to us, and I was able to take some digiscoped images. A couple of times, it appeared to get stuck briefly in the burdock, which on occasion, is known to catch birds that do not escape. This was between 10:00 and 11:30. Later, around 2:30, Betsy and Vicki saw the warbler again at the pull-off on the NORTH side of the control gates. It was going into weeds on the slope in front of where birders often look for gulls and waterfowl. Other good birds included a KILLDEER a couple of hundred yards above the Canadian (Horseshoe) Falls; a TRUMPETER SWAN with a yellow tag and black numbers (# 928); at least FIVE NORTHERN SHOVELERS (one adult male); a male HARLEQUIN DUCK; and a WINTER WREN. The swan and shovelers were in the rocks with many gulls, about mid-river and between the stranded barge and the falls. The shovelers were very difficult to see, being frequently hidden by the rocks and the gulls. However, we did have two shovelers (possibly different birds) close to shore above the stranded barge, at the creek outlet from the Dufferin Islands Nature Area. The Harlequin Duck was seen from the pull-off south of the control gates. It was seen feeding between the breakwall and the "island" where many gulls roost, and also resting on the island. It was always closely associating with Mallards. In recent weeks, this bird has been seen below the falls and at the Dufferin Islands Nature Area, always with Mallards! The Winter Wren was seen right by the overlook that is behind the gatehouse (the gatehouse is a smaller building between the barge and the control gates). We also had about 15,000 Herring Gulls, 4 Iceland, 1 Glaucous (at the base of the American Falls), 7 Lesser Black-backeds, and at least one adult gull that looked good for Thayer's. Our tally was 55 species. Good CBCing! [Ontbirds]Scarlet Tanager, Ottawa
We saw a Scarlet Tanager in Britannia Woods in Ottawa yesterday about 3pm. It was on the northwest side of the woods in an area with many Yellow-rumped Warblers. To access Britannia Woods, take Carling Avenue west and exit right just before Richmond Road onto Poulin Avenue, proceed for less than 1km to the end of Poulin, turn left on Howe St and then right on Britannia Road. Proceed almost to the end of Britannia Road (less than 1 km). You can park on Britannia Road and enter the woods at a gate on the right side about 100 metres before the end of Britannia Road. Take the path to the right just past the gate and the Tanager was seen about 200 metres from there. Don Wigle Ottawa
[Ontbirds]Sudbury region, Bald Eagles nesting
We saw a nesting pair of Bald Eagles yesterday afternoon on Dry Pine Bay on the French River. They were nesting in one of the tallest white pine trees on a small island about 0.5km south of Stoney Rapids. One access route is Hwy 69 north from Parry Sound or south from Sudbury to the French River Supply Post just north of the French River bridge. From the Supply Post, one goes up river almost 1km to Dry Pine Bay and then north about 2km to the small island which is on the east side of the bay just before Stoney Rapids (consult the map at the Supply Post).
