[Ontbirds] Grimsby Barnacle Goose
Hello All, Jean and I were unsuccessful in our attempts to view the Barnacle Goose on Elm Tree Road as well as from the Pump House between 1:00-2:00 PM this afternoon. Returning from La Salle Marina, we found the Barnacle Goose on the lake amongst 150-200 Canada Geese at 4:25 PM this afternoon. [Ontbirds] Brant--Port Weller, St. Catharines
At 2:30 PM this afternoon, Jean and I observed one Brant feeding from the grass with a mixed flock of Canada Geese and geese hybrids. All were seen at Jones Beach in Port Weller, in the grassy area just west of the parking area. Walking to the lookout on the east spit we observed 2 Red-throated Loon and 1 Common Loon. [Ontbirds] Great Horned Owl in NOTL
Hello All, Jean and I were at the Wetland Ridge trail this evening (9/06). At 8:15 PM we observed a Great Horned Owl sitting on the hydro tower near the north lagoon. It was sitting on the first horizontal bar of the tower. Despite hearing 9 Common Nighthawks we did not see any. Light was fading very fast. [Ontbirds] Upland Sandpiper in St. Catharines
Good afternoon All, Jean and I observed an Upland Sandpiper on 5th Avenue in west St. Catharines this afternoon at 3:45 PM. It was on the north side of the road, in the long grass, near the vineyard. We were there looking for Bobolink and found three males in the grassy field south of 5th Avenue. [Ontbirds] Peregrine Falcon in St. Catharines
Hello All, My wife and I observed a Peregrine Falcon from our yard today (2/01). I first noticed the falcon at 11:30 AM. It was perched in a large Walnut tree on the east side of a parking lot behind our house. The tree can be easily seen from the Collegiate (high school) parking lot. It remained in the tree until 12:30 PM. We previously observed the falcon on Tuesday Jan. 26 for only a moment in a tree near the Catherine Street entrance to the parking lot. [Ontbirds] Snowy owl in St. Catharines
Hi All, The Snowy Owl observed during the St. Catharines CBC yesterday was observed by my wife and I this afternoon (12/15) at 3:45 pm. After hearing of the observation at last night's roundup, my wife and I travelled along Fifth Avenue Louth, in west St. Catharines, in hopes of observing it. We observed it on the western edge of the ploughed field, found between Third St. Louth and Fifth St Louth. It is very visible from 1415 Fifth Avenue. Hi All, My wife and I travelled to Cement Plant Road in Port Colborne this afternoon (12:40 PM) and did not observe the Western Kingbird. We continued along to the pond further south on Cement Plant Road. Many thanks to the two women who informed us of the pond. As mentioned in Jim Pawlicki's report many shorebirds were present (1:15 PM). We did not observe the Stilt Sandpiper but did observe a White-rumped Sandpiper in the northern section of the pond. The two Great Egrets (no bands) were present and we also observed at least 20 Blue-winged Teal on the pond. At Morgan's Point Conservation Area, we observed one Lesser Black-backed Gull amongst the many gulls. At the Base on Morgan's Point many shorebirds and gulls were observed. Turn right. Head west on East Main until Crowland Avenue and turn left. Turn right at Lincoln Street. Cement Plant Road will be on the left, 1.5-2.0 km from the intersection of Highways 58 and 3. The pond on Cement Plant Road is 1.4 km from Hwy. 3. For Morgan's Point (there will be signs), continue west along Hwy. 3 until Golf Course Road, turning left. Turn right onto Lakeshore Road and then left onto Morgan's Point Road. The entrance to the conservation will be marked. The Base is found on Harbourview Road, slightly south of the intersection of Golf Course Rd. and Lakeshore Rd. Hi All, Today, May 31, my wife and I observed six Great Egrets on the Niagara River in Fort Erie. They were observed on the stone pier slightly south of the International Railway Bridge at 2:00 PM this afternoon. Two egrets flew up river as we were leaving the parking area. Four Dunlin were observed on Lake Erie at Jaeger Rocks near Lakeshore Road and Adelaide Street at 3:00 PM this afternoon. Turn right on to Central Avenue and continue towards the river and head north (turning left) on the Niagara Parkway (Lakeshore Rd/Niagara Blvd.). The parking area south of the International Railway Bridge is 1.5 km from the south end of Central Avenue and on the right. Catherine Street will be on the left. Jaeger Rocks As above, but turn right on to Lakeshore Road. Lakeshore Road follows the Lake Erie shoreline. Earlier this evening, 6:45 PM, my wife and I observed one Palm Warbler and two Gray Catbirds on the Merritt Trail near Martindale Road. In addition, 15 Brown-headed Cowbirds were observed in a tree near the Martindale Road entrance to the trail. Hi All, On a phone tip from Kayo Roy, my wife, father-in-law and I observed an immature Trumpeter Swan (no tags) with an adult Mute Swan, on Lake Gibson in Thorold. It was observed earlier this evening (4/16) at 6:45 PM on the lake, south of Beaverdams Rd. We also observed our first female Red-winged Blackbird and Barn Swallow of 2008 and 2 pairs of American Wigeons. [Ontbirds]Snow Goose on the Niagara River
Hello All, This afternoon (3/16) my wife and I took her mother and partner birding. At 2:00 PM we observed a single white morph adult Snow Goose with some Canada Geese on the Niagara River, south of Chippawa. The Snow Goose was initially observed standing on the river bank with some Canada Geese. When we stopped to get a better view, the Snow Goose entered the water. When we left the area the Snow Goose was still present. The Snow Goose can be observed 100 metres south of the Legends on Niagara Golf Course, directly across from Service Rd 27. Hello All, This afternoon at 2:20 PM my wife and I observed a Rough-legged Hawk in west St. Catharines. From St. Paul Street West (Regional Road 81), we observed the hawk sitting in a tree (between Vansickle Road and First Street Louth). It flew to another tree and we observed it from First Street Louth, slightly north of St. Paul Street West. It then flew north and landed in a tree near the railway tracks, north of 5th Avenue Louth. While we were on 5th Avenue we observed 6 Horned Larks at the side of the road. [Ontbirds]Bald Eagle in Thorold
Hello All, Today, thanks from my dad's tip, Jean and I observed a Bald Eagle in Thorold at 2:15 PM. We found it in the same area we observed one (same bird?) last year. It was seen soaring over Lake Gibson in the area between Beaverdams Rd., Decew Rd. the 406. We observed only for a few minutes as it is very cold today. After soaring over the water for a few minutes, it flew in to the trees on the south-west side of the lake. We lost view of it at that point. It was easily and safely observed from the old railway line running parallel with Beaverdams Road. [Ontbirds]Female Harlequin at Niagara Falls
The female Harlequin was still present in the same area above the Falls at 3:00 PM this afternoon (1/13). My wife first spotted it behind the rocks where the Y shaped tree trunk is located. We then observed the Harlequin swimming and diving between the rocks. It also walked out of the water to stand on the sloping rock in the same area. In addition, we observed a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches in the Dufferin Islands Nature Area. [Ontbirds]Lesser Black-backed Gull at Merritt Island, Welland
Hi All, My wife, her father partner and I went to Merritt Island in Welland to find the blue morph Snow Goose. We were unsuccessful but observed many species while we walked the lower trail to Woodlawn Road. We returned to the parking area along the paved path. Red-breasted Nuthatch were found on the lower path (also observed from the paved path) and a single Lesser Black-backed Gull was observed, from the paved path, on the canal ice amongst some Herring and Ring-billed Gulls. Hi All, For those birders interested, there is a Northern Harrier in west St. Catharines. It can be observed from 5th Avenue Louth between 3rd Street Louth and 1st Street Louth. My wife and I observed today (Jan. 5) at 3:15 pm. [Ontbirds]Horned Grebe-Fort Erie and Common Redpoll-Chippawa
Hello All, Today, December 29, my wife and I birded the Niagara River from Fort Erie to Chippawa and observed many birds. South of the International Railway Bridge (from the parking area near Catherine Street), we observed a Horned Grebe at 12:00 pm. Thanks to the visiting U.S. birders for pointing it out and the Fort Erie birders allowing us a better view through their scope. A Common Loon was also observed in this area of the river. From the Niagara Parkway near the north end of Central Avenue in Fort Erie, we observed 6 Iceland Gull. In the area of Miller's Creek Marina at 1:00 pm, 70 Tundra Swan were observed. At the feeders in Chippawa at 2:00 pm, we observed 3 Common Redpoll, possibly a total of 6 were present. 3 Tufted Titmouse were also observed. Turn right on to Central Avenue and continue towards the river and head north (turning left) on the Niagara Parkway (Niagara Blvd.). Roughly 0.5 km further north is where the north end of Central Avenue meets the Niagara Parkway. Miller's Creek Marina is 5-6 km from Catherine St., heading north on the Niagara Parkway. The Feeders in Chippawa: From Tim Horton's turn left on to Portage Rd., turn left at Chippawa Parkway, turn right at Thomas Street. [Ontbirds]Northern Shrike in Grimsby
Hi All, In addition, to the Northern Hawk Owl reported earlier today, my wife and I observed a Northern Shrike at Fifty Point Conservation Area. We observed it from Kelson Avenue as it sat in a tree in the conservation area. It flew to a second tree and then flew to the ground behind a mound of earth, not to be seen again. We observed the shrike at 1:45 PM this afternoon. The Northern Hawk Owl was observed from the RR tracks roughly 200-250 metres west of 10th Road East at 2:30 PM. Bob Highcock and Jean Hampson St. Catharines, Ontario Directions: For the Northern Hawk Owl: Take the QEW to Niagara / Stoney Creek area, and take Fifty Road South to the escarpment top., Turn right at the stop sign at Ridge Rd., and go less then 1km to the first street on the left, 10th concession., turn left and go to the RR tracks. At 2:30 PM this afternoon, the bird was observed from the tracks roughly 200-250 metres west of 10th Road E. For the Northern Shrike: Take the QEW to Fifty Road and travel north to the North Service Road. Travel east on the service road to Kelson Avenue. Turn left and travel along Kelson Road until the dead end. The Northern Shrike was observed west of Kelson Avenue in Fifty Point Conservation Area near the Kelson Avenue access gate.
