Seen in the Owl Woods at 9 am and photoed at 920. A real skulker that did not
sing, but called occasionally. I did not have it's song on tape, but it may
have popped up for a photo because I was playing a Pine Warbler song at
different speeds.
My Flickr account doesn't want to take my photos, so here is my ebird checklist.
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S30532617
Directions: From Kingston, go west on hwy 401, then South on county Rd 4 to
the Millhaven ferry terminal. Ferries leave to Amherst Island on the half
hour, starting at 6:30 am . Note that Wednesday the 6:30 am ferry transports
fuel and will not take passengers, so the first is 7:30 am. East on Front
Road, then South on Marshall 40 foot Rd(may be unsuitable for your car).
The regular (big) ferry is now in operation.
Savvy local birders know me as a rather late responder to emails, if directions
are wrong perhaps a local birder can sort it out with another posting. These
photos can be used without permission for any rare bird committee people.

Nice find Mark and thanks for calling me.

I have a dentist app't tomorrow about 9 and may be able to get the 10.30 ferry

move on but it is worth a try.

At about 11am the 8 (not 7) Greater White-fronted Geese moved south by about
another 500m. There they intermingled with approximately 1000 Canada Geese
and were harder to pick out. Visibility has also decreased with fog and rain
becoming heavier.

Directions: Wolfe Island is reached by a free ferry from downtown Kingston
(at the east end of Barrack Street). The ferry is currently docking at
Dawson Point, from where you will travel south to Hwy 96, then west to the
village of Marysville. After the shops turn left onto Hwy 95 and follow it
south to Reed's Bay Road. Turn right (west) to 5th Line. Turn left (south)
and follow past house on right checking fields as you go. Birds last seen
approximately 1km along this road just over the rise in the road.

They are on 5th Line, about 500 m south of Reed's Bay Road in a lightly

[Ontbirds] Neotropical Cormorant Toronto present at 10.20 am and 11.00 am Friday July 3

2015-07-03 Thread Paul MacKenzie
Thanks to Mark Field and Walter Fisher for reposting the Neotropical Cormorant.
It was on the Toronto breakwater wall at the foot of Windermere Ave when we
arrived (from Kingston) at 10.20 am. It was obviously smaller and was the most
westerly of the cormorants on that part of the wall. It provided great scope
views whenever it lifted its head. When a kayak went close by it flew out of
sight close behind the wall, but came back up to sit there again within 40
minutes.

[Ontbirds] Painted Bunting Amherst Island

2015-05-13 Thread Paul MacKenzie
The bright male Painted Bunting reported by Kurt Hennige via Mark Crawford
yesterday was seen well but briefly at 08.00 this am in a low bush in front of
house 9950 Front Road. It also visits the feeders of the neighbour just to the
east. Both owners seem pleased to have observers from the road, (I was alone
this am), and are keeping the feeders full.

The regular Amherst Island ferry is serving Wolfe Island so the small ferry
which takes only about 18 cars can be crowded. It leaves on the half hour and
costs about $8.

Although I saw none on brief visit today, Brant migrate near Amherst Island in
large flocks and this week should be the peak flight.

best birding,

[Ontbirds] Thick-Billed Murre Kingston - update

2013-12-05 Thread Paul MacKenzie
Ontbirders

There was a lot of confusion about this bird today. There were some false
alarms. I went back at 3.30 pm and was shown a photo of a Common Loon and the
birders and press reporter looking had not seen the Murre. I had no positive
reports all day that I believed.

I know that birders drove long distances today, some coming back a second time
when it was reported, only to be disappointed. We are all familiar with the ups
and downs of chasing rarities. A Buddhist attitude is recommended!

Tonight I had a phone report that the bird was seen a meter from shore near the
Marriott Hotel at 4.15 pm. This is between the Delta Hotel where it was
yesterday and the Kingston Yacht Club. After discussion with the observer I am
convinced this was a genuine sighting. We will try in the am and post by 08.00
if we find the bird again.

(From the 401 exit south on Sir John A. Macdonald to Johnson street then left

[Ontbirds] Thick-billed Murre Kingston - update

2013-12-03 Thread Paul MacKenzie
The Thick-billed Murre reported by Mark Read swam east close to shore on the
Kingston waterfront and stopped at the foot of Maitland street at the Kingston
Yacht Club. It was just to the west side quite close to shore in the bay where
Maitland street ends. It might overnight at this location as it was there at
dusk 16.20. (From there it could swim east to the downtown waterfront or the
Wolfe Island ferry dock). It was not observed to dive or feed while we were
there.

Directions:
Exit highway 401 at exit 615, Sir John A MacDonald Blvd, and go south until it
ends. Then left on King Street past the big smoke stack at Kingston General
Hospital and the traffic light at Barrie Street. Then watch for Maitland street
(one block past Emily Street) and turn right one block. Program 1 Maitland
Street Kingston.

At dawn there would be parking there but all parking places during the day are
reserved and the Yacht club is private property. It would be best to park in a
nearby location and walk into Maitland street.

happy trying

[Ontbirds] Garganey near Montreal

2013-05-02 Thread Paul MacKenzie
Ontbird readers might not be aware of a male Garganey near Mirabel airport
present for at least 6 days.

It was seen this morning by a group from Kingston: Erwin Batalla, Bud Rowe,
Mark Read, and myself at 8.15-8.45 am.

Directions and photos are on e-bird and Quebec rare bird website. There are
thousands of Snow Geese using this pond as well as other waterfowl. I missed
the Garganey on my first trip last Monday afternoon when it was probably
sleeping in the vegetation.

Directions: Take Highway 50 (which passes Mirabel airport) to its east end just
1.5 km east of Trans-Canada Highway 15 at highway 117. Turn north (left) on
117, and left again immediately onto Montee Guenette. Then within 2 km take the
first right on Rang Sainte Marguerite. This short road goes through the pond
and allows a few places to park on a narrow shoulder. The Garganey was on the
right or south side today.

[Ontbirds] Lesser Black-backed Gull Lansdowne (Eastern Ontario)

Hi all,

Ottawa birders have a better dump, but near Kingston we see few
Lesser BB Gulls.
One adult Lesser BB Gull among maybe 300 gulls at Lansdowne dump this
afternoon.
Smaller than Greater BB, paler mantle, pale eye with dark smudges
around eye, dirty yellow legs.

Also 3 Iceland and 1 Glaucous, about 16 Greater BB and no Ring-billed Gulls.

Directions:
About two km west of Lansdowne on south side of county road 34. 401
nearest exit $ 659 Reynolds Road.
The access is easy as there is a short muddy road just past the dump

[Ontbirds] Barrow's Goldeneye west of Kingston

2008-12-16 Thread Paul Mackenzie

South-eastern Ontario birders:

A male Barrow's Goldeneye was found among a flock of about 40 Common
Goldeneyes this afternoon east of the hydro power plant with the two
tall towers along highway 33 (Bath Road), opposite number 6707 Bath
Road where some boats are in winter storage.

There were several Goldeneye flocks alongthis section of Bath road.
If they are close to shore they fly out when cars stop, and they dive
a lot. The very calm water made viewing ideal this afternoon.

Highway 33 follows the shore of Lake Ontario west of Kingston, past
the Amherst Island Ferry dock, and Bath to the ferry to Picton. The
hydro power plant with the two tall towers is at the junction of
highway 33 and County road 8 which runs south from Napanee.

[Ontbirds]Brant, eastern Lake Ontario

2005-05-10 Thread Paul Mackenzie

Greetings on a calm warm May day,

Two flocks of Brant were flying over eastern lake Ontario this morning May
10, seen by Joel Ellis, Bud Rowe and the writer.

This is one of the best areas to see this species in Ontario in mid to late
May. They fly in tight flocks not usually a V but a curved wide leading
edge followed by trailing lines, and sit on the water in close-knit flocks.
Amherst island seems to be near the center of the flyway, but they can be
seen from highway 33 from Glenora east to Milhaven, or from the Amherst
Island ferry, or the south-east corner of Amherst Island where small flocks
sometimes rest on the shore or grassy fields.

DIRECTIONS: Amherst Island is accessible by ferry departing from Millhaven,
west of Kingston. Exit Hwy 401 at km 593, head south to its end near the lake,
turn right on highway 33, and after less than 1 km turn left again into the
ferry loading area. Departures are at 6:20, and then every hour from 7:30
onward. Round trip cost is $5.00

[Ontbirds] Pink-footed Goose Quebec.

2004-04-24 Thread Paul Mackenzie

Hi onbirders,

Due to the rarity of this bird I am reposting the Pink Footed Goose to
onbirds even though it is in PQ about 60 km east of Ottawa.
It was seen in front of the wooden blind building in Plaisance Provincial
Park about 11.00 am Sat Apr 24. It flew in with a large flock of Canadas
showing much paler wings above and swam toward the observers. It did not
appear much smaller than some of the Canada Geese.

Directions modified from the Birding Ottawa Guide's Grande & Petite
Presqu'ile page at:
From Hull, go north on Autoroute de la Gatineau or Highway 5 almost at
once take Exit # 2, the Autoroute 50 east exit. Follow the long, 1.0 km,
ramp over Brewery Creek and onto Autoroute 50 headed north. Proceed 30 km
to exit 166 (the final exit on 50 at this time), following the exit ramp

Rufous Hummer no longer seen at Kingston

2004-01-09 Thread Paul Mackenzie
Hello ontbirders,

Bob Sachs has a computer glitch and asked me to post the fact that the
Rufous Hummingbird was not seen yesterday at the Yendt's feeder at the end
of King Pitt Rd in Kingston. Since it usually appears many times daily,
this suggests it has departed or died.
