[Ontbirds] Black Vulture, Port Stanley

2020-03-19 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Hi all,

I saw one of the two reported Black Vultures in Port Stanley this afternoon.
They have apparently been around since last week. Today, it was perched with
about 20 Turkey Vultures in some trees near the corner of highway 4 and Warren
Street (42.676269,-81.216022)

Port Stanley is located in Elgin county, on the shore of Lake Erie.

[Ontbirds] Gyrfalcon, South Bruce Peninsula

Posting for Kiah Jasper:

Kiah just had a Gyrfalcon fly over his yard in Mar, just north of Wiarton west
of highway 6. He described it as "grey morph juv. crippling view, right
overhead"

Might be of interest to keep an eye out for if you're in the area.

[Ontbirds] Slaty-backed Gull, London - YES

I just saw the adult Slaty-backed Gull at the Westminster landfill in south
London. It was in a field with the gulls west of the intersection of Manning
Drive and White Oak Drive.

Be careful out there, roads are slippery and there are whiteout conditions.

[Ontbirds] Slaty-backed Gulls, London

2019-12-13 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Unfortunately just the messenger...

A little late for any action today, but just putting out this list with a
couple Slaty-backed Gulls from the Westminister landfill site south of London,
at the corner of Westminister drive and White Oak drive. Access to the actual
landfill is limited (I have never gone in), but the gulls often loaf in the
adjacent fields.

Tomorrow is the London Christmas Bird Count, and the landfill just so happens
to be an area that I will be checking out, probably around midday, depending on
how the morning goes, so will definitely update if seen again. Please update if
you see it, people will want to know :)

2019-12-05 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Just an FYI for those not on facebook or not yet using another bird alert
service:

>From Joe Fortin in the Ontario Birds facebook group:

"I've been given the go ahead to share the specific location and let folks know
it's okay to come and take a look.

All we ask is that everyone is respectful and please do not enter any buildings.

The bird was spotted at the Bark Lake Leadership and Conference Centre, at the
bird feeder at the front office. There is parking available at the front
office (right hand side, just past the maintenance yard), with the feeder just
out front. Typically, the feeder is topped up around 8:00am in the morning,
but we'll try and make sure it's good to go before than.

I'd like to also thank everyone for their help with identifying this bird and I
certainly hope everyone get's a chance to see it!

The address is:
1551 Bark Lake Dr
Irondale, ON K0M 1X0

If you are using the Google Maps listing, please note that the centre is 5km up
the driveway, the pin is only the start!"

Take care, and good luck to those who try to see this great looking bird!

Hi all,

Nothing has been posted here yet to my knowledge, but there is a Yellow-Crowned
Night-Heron that has been around for about a week in Kinsmen Park in Caledonia.

[Ontbirds] Dickcissel south of London

2018-05-27 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
It's that time of year again!

This evening I briefly observed a female Dickcissel on Scotland Drive south of
London, where they bred last year. So far just the female, but hopefully it is
just a matter of time before a couple males will join her.

The "Dickcissel spot" is on Scotland Drive south of the 401, pretty much
exactly one kilometer west of Highbury Avenue. Look for a couple seemingly
abandoned semi-trailers, the field will be opposite to them, beside the house.

[Ontbirds] American Bittern, North London

2018-04-21 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Hi all,

I know not a provincially "rare" bird, but certainly a very interesting one for
Middlesex County (fourth record on eBird in the last decade, first since 2016)

This afternoon I found an American Bittern in the wetland just north of
Sunningdale Road between Richmond Street and Adelaide Street in London. The
wetland can be accessed off of Canvas Way. The pathway is flooded along the
retaining wall (in fact, that is where I first spotted the bittern!), so you
may find it useful to turn left off of Canvas Way onto Eclipse Walk. At the end
of the road there is another access point to the wetland.

This evening the Barnacle Goose was present at the Schomberg Sewage Lagoons (5

content, so it will likely be there in the morning.

[Ontbirds] Large numbers of blackbirds in north London

2018-02-20 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Although not all to rare, I thought I would just write a quick post on the
blackbirds in north London.

The first wave of blackbirds for the area came in this morning (I was out all
day yesterday and saw none), starting with seven Red-winged Blackbirds.
Throughout the day their numbers gradually increased, and a few males have
seemed to begin setting up shop.

Late this afternoon I came across a flock of around 90 Red-winged Blackbirds
and Common Grackles, which for this area is an exceptional number for this date
(at this time last year I had only seen one Red-winged). I expect numbers to
keep building in the coming days.

I saw the large blackbird flock off of Sunningdale Rd. in North London, between
Richmond street and Adelaide street. There are a couple nice places in the
neighborhood (Uplands Trail, Virginia Park etc.) that were also productive for
blackbirds and other songbirds today, and Uplands had a Fox Sparrow yesterday.

Re: [Ontbirds] Townsend's Solitaire - Yes

2018-01-21 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Hi everyone,

The Townsend's Solitaire continues in Dufferin near Shelburne (not that we
expected it to go anywhere soon!)

It took about an hour for the group to get a visual on it, however members of
the group heard it calling off and on long before it was seen. I actually
missed it the first time because Owen Ridgen and I were busy looking at Pine
Siskins (which were numerous), however thankfully it showed up again and we saw
it sitting on the fence behind one of the houses. So, I suppose if you aren't
having any luck peering into the bushes, take a look, and you might see it on a
fence post!

The bird is located in 4th Line near Shelburne. It has been observed around the
bushes (and fences) around the two houses, so if you stand there long enough,
you should be able to see it.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Townsend's Solitaire - Yes

For all of those who want it for the year, or missed it last (me), the
Townsend's Solitaire that MacNeal found last November still continues
today. I haven't seen any updates on this listserv since Dan refound it on
the 16th, but I thought I'd let people know. It seems to be most reliable
in a small period shirtly after 9, then it dissapears for most of the day,
then reapears closer to 2. Also of note in the area was a Shrike and
Goldfinch involved in a high speed chase, as well as some Ring-necked
Pheasant around. There was another noteworthy sighting (also by Dan) of an
adult Northern Goshawk on 15 side road. Hope this helps others decide
whether or not to make the trip.

[Ontbirds] Barrow's Goldeneye in London

2018-01-06 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Hello,

There has been a report of a drake Barrow's Goldeneye in London today by Ben
Evans. I don't have an exact location, but it is in the river around the
Springbank/Greenway park area. I know that at least four birders, including
myself, went out looking for it this afternoon, unsuccessfully. It could very
well still be in the area, as I believe there was a section of the river nobody
checked.

On a side note, there have also been reports of Horned Grebes, a Pied-billed
Grebe, Northern Pintails, a Red-breasted Merganser, and a Long-tailed Duck, all
of which are winter rarities in Middlesex.

Springbank Park has many access points off of Commissioner's Road and
Springbank Drive. Consider parking at Storybrook Gardens off of Commissioner's.

Greenway Park can be accessed by turning onto Greenside Ave. off of Springbank
Drive. There is a parking lot past the wastewater plant. Often ducks will
concentrate along the stretch of water off of Greenway Park.

Warbler. We arrived later than we wanted due to construction on exit 90, which
put us 45 minutes behind. I walked centre road up and down, then all of fifth
street, where I heard some chip-note type calls and some chickadees, but I was
unable to find anything. Don't let my dip discourage anyone from going, as the
bird is without doubt still present...I just got there too late in the day.

The Ross's Goose was seen with the 2000+ Canada Geese on the lake. You can
access the beach with a little trail at the end of fifth street. It was quite
easy to pick out. It eventually flew NW with a bunch of Canada's around 5:20.

Although I didn't see my main target, I still managed to get one lifer. Not bad
for a little after school birding excursion! (Now I just have to explain to my
teacher why I was unable to get all my math done...)

Good birding,

[Ontbirds] American White Pelican in Erieau

2017-11-02 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Hi,

Not my sighting, but I thought I'd get the word out about an American White
Pelican in Erieau this afternoon. It was being seen from the road (I assume) in
the pond at McGeachy Pond CA.

Here in the eBird checklist:
http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S40269225

Directions:
Off of Colonel Talbot, turn onto Erieau Rd, which is a couple minutes west of
Blenheim. The locatio will be on the right side of the road, just before you
enter Erieau.

Also, if any one is in the area, you might want to pop into the landfill, which
in on the same road, only about a km north of Colonel Talbot. There was a long
staying American Avocet, which hasn't been reported in awhile. I am wondering
if it is still there (likely it isn't, but you never know with birds) The bird
was in the pond on the left side of the short road off Erieau which brings you
to a gate.

Here is the eBird checklist from my visit on Oct. 9:

[Ontbirds] Brant in Windermere Basin, Hamilton

2017-10-14 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Today there was a Brant present in Windermere Basin in Hamilton.

The bird was preening and foraging on the shoreline.

You can access Windermere Basin off the QEW by driving down Eastport Dr.
heading towards Niagara Falls. There is a gravel road with a sign reading
"Windermere East Park".

[Ontbirds] American Avocet in Blenheim

2017-10-09 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Hi,

This morning I got the chance to go down to Blenheim and see the continuing
American Avocet. It has been around for over two weeks now, and it looks pretty
happy where it is so there is still probably time to see it if you would like
to.

The bird is in pond #1 in the Blenheim Landfill. To access this location, if
driving down Talbot Trail, turn down Erieau Rd. and head north for about 3 km.
At address 20262, turn down the little road. Immediately to your right will be
a pond behind a chain-link fence. The bird will be in this pond, and should be
easy to find, however the phragmites don't help when it comes to viewing. When
I saw it, it was near the back with some Yellowlegs.

https://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S39788457

Also of note was a Little Gull seen flying with some Bonaparte's in Erieau. To
get to Erieau, drive south on Erieau Rd. The pier where most birders will park
and scope out the gulls is closed for construction, however the part that juts
out into the lake with the lighthouse at the end is still accessible.

[Ontbirds] Possible Cattle Egret in North London

2017-10-08 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Hello all,

This afternoon I saw what I think could POSSIBLY be a Cattle Egret in north
London while in the car. It was flying away from me, and seemed to be entirely
white. It's flight pattern reminded me of the CAEG I saw in Blenheim last year.
I can not rule out a gull because of the distance and the short duration of the
observation. The wings seemed to pointy to me, but maybe the angle had
something to do with it.

I saw the bird flying far back from the road near the treeline between Highbury
and Clarke on Sunningdale Rd. It was near the horse pastures at about the
halfway point of the stretch of rd. There are many fields here, and plenty of
habitat.

[Ontbirds] Possible California Gull in Thunder Bay on Sept 27

2017-10-06 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Hello All,

I'm sorry to disappoint, but this is unfortunately not a current report. While
going through eBird, I somehow found myself looking at the reports in Marina
Park in Thunder Bay (the same place as the Violet-green Swallow).

On September 27th there was a California Gull reported to be among the Herring
Gulls. There are no photos, however, the description the observer gave seems to
match this species, but then again, I'm no gull expert!

Although the likelihood of it still being there is very slim, it may be worth
your while to check out groups of gulls to see what may be hiding amongst them.
Who knows, maybe it, or something even better, will be found again.

[Ontbirds] Fork-tailed Flycatcher in Toronto

2017-09-24 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Hi All,

I was lucky enough to see the Fork-tailed Flycatcher in Tommy Thompson Park
this evening from about 6:30 to 7:30. It was found on a dead tree in the middle
of some phragmites in the 2nd Cell. It was observed sallying multiple times.

Tommy Thompson Park is in Toronto, and can be accessed off Leslie St. To get to
the Flycatcher spot, travel about 2k to the fork in the road, then turn left.
Continue .5ishk to a gravel path on the right side of the path. Turn right down
the narrow gravel path. If you come to the fish bridge, you are on the wrong
path.

[Ontbirds] 50 Common Nighthawks in London

2017-09-10 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Hi all,

I kid you not. This evening during the last hour of the Charitable Big Day, I
found a group of at least 50 Common Nighthawks foraging over Killaly Meadows
ESA in north London. I am not exaggerating at all...l counted them to the best
of my ability by 10s. There were likely more than 50, but I only ever saw about
50 at once. That's right, they were all seen at the same time. Quite the
spectacle!

Killaly Meadows ESA can be accessed from Adelaide St. by turning down Windemere
Rd. towards the baseball diamonds. There is a mini-golf place at the corner you
must turn.

[Ontbirds] Red-necked Phalaropes AND Eared Grebe at Strathroy Sewage Lagoons

2017-08-22 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Tonight there were not only the Red-necked Phalaropes that have been reported
the last few nights, but also an Eared Grebe that was first spotted this
morning.

As with the phalaropes, the grebe liked the north cell (the one on the left),
and swam around with the Wood Ducks and phalaropes around the little grass
island. It didn't dive much, so it allowed for easy viewing. The grebe is
likely the same one spotted in Exeter last week by the BBC. A great find!

The Red-necked Phalaropes have been hanging out in the same vicinity as when I
last saw them on Sunday. The little grass island in the north cell and the
surrounding area is a good place to start your search.

The Strathroy Sewage Lagoons can be accessed without a permit or climbing a
fence off Pike Rd, which is just south-west of Strathroy (SW of London).

Directions:

Off Highway 402: Take exit 65, head south on Centre Rd/81, turn right onto
Mullifarry Dr, turn left onto Pike Rd, sewage lagoons will be on the left hand
side of the road (look for the little parking lot)

Off Egremont Dr/22: head south on Centre Rd/81, turn right onto Mullifarry Dr,
turn left onto Pike Rd, sewage lagoons will be on the left hand side of the
road (look for the parking lot)

[Ontbirds] Red-necked Phalaropes at Strathroy Sewage Lagoons

2017-08-20 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
This evening there were two Red-necked Phalaropes at the Strathroy Sewage
Lagoons in Middlesex. The two seen tonight were part of a trio originally found
earlier today by Paul Nicholson. These are the first Red-necked Phalaropes to
my knowledge since 2014, when there was one found also in Strathroy. The three
may provide to be a new county high record, however I'm not entirely sure.

They seemed to favour the north side of the north cell (pond to the left as you
walk in) around the little grass island. They were quite easy to pick out once
you are looking in the right area. The pair moved around quite a lot, but
always returned to the same general area.

[Ontbirds] Wood Stork at Pelee and Phalaropes in Essex and Blenheim

2017-08-13 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Due to auto-correct, my previous emails got a little screwed up, but I think
the point got across. Today, the juvenile Wood Stork was being seen in flight
from about 10:30 until 2:15. I saw it around 11:20, when it flew 20-25 feet off
the ground right over a group of ~5 of us on the Tip. Afterwards, it
periodically passed over and a few more people got lucky with it, while some
just narrowly missed it. It was reported to have flown towards Pelee Island
then back again on at least one occasion. All in all, we were kept hopping
trying to locate the bird!

After Point Pelee, I checked out the east Essex Sewage Lagoons, where I found 2
Wilson's Phalaropes and 4 Red-necked Phalaropes. Two more lifers for the day!
They were swimming in the SW cell close to the dike separating the two most
southern cells. They are hard to miss once you are looking in the right area.

In the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons, a nice surprise was to be had. Instead of the 4
Wilson's Phalaropes I was thinking could have been a possibility, I found 8 in
the second cell from the gate on the right hand side. They favoured the side
closest to the dike separating the cell closest to the gate on the right. One
seemed to like being by it's lonesome while the other 7 were found together
with Lesser Yellowlegs and a Stilt Sandpiper. No White-rumped Sandpipers were
found, but they have been reported.

Point Pelee is in Leamington and can be accessed off Point Pelee drive.

Essex Sewage Lagoons (eastern) can be accessed off of CR-8. There are two
entrances, one on a dirt road leading off CR-8 and another by turning onto
Lakeshore Rd. 211 and parking at the gate. To get into the lagoons a gate must
be climbed.

Blenheim Sewage Lagoons can be accessed off of Talbot Trail buy turning down
Lagoon Rd. A permit is required, and those can be picked up for free at the
post office in Blenheim.

[Ontbirds] Mitchell Shorebirds on August 9th (incl. White-rumped Sandpipers)

2017-08-10 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Sorry for the late posting...

On the 9th I spent a couple hours at the West Perth Wetlands (Mitchell Sewage
Lagoons) in Perth county.

I was pleased with the number of shorebirds observed, ending with a total of 10
species.

  1. Killdeer (~55)
  2. Stilt Sandpiper (1)
  3. Least Sandpiper (23)
  4. WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER (2)
  5. Pectoral Sandpiper (5)
  6. Semipalmated Sandpiper (14)
  7. Spotted Sandpiper (3)
  8. Solitary Sandpiper (5)
  9. Greater Yellowlegs (5)
  10. Lesser Yellowlegs (~88)

The most productive cells were the shorebird cell and the cell that is fenced
in. The water is much higher than last year, and the back cell had NO
shorebirds (quite a difference from last year, where hundreds could be found.)

The two White-rumped Sandpipers were the best shorebirds observed. They were
seen on the shore of the fenced in cell with some Leasts and Semi-sands. They
were noticeably larger and their wings projected past their tails. A scope
would be very helpful in finding them among the other peeps.

Good luck to all those wanting to see this shorebird spectacle.

I've driven over 1600 km from London for this bird...you can't win them all (I
haven't won to many twitches lately!)

Marina Bay park can be accessed off Pearl Street off S Water Street in Thunder

[Ontbirds] Thunder Bay Violet-green Swallow - NOT Yet

2017-07-08 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Hello all,

This morning I checked out Marina Park for the female Violet-green Swallow.
Many Tree Swallows, but no Violet-green Swallow yet. I will be going back
later, and some birders are there right now.

Also of interest may be the roughly nine Clay-colored Sparrows hanging out.

Marina Bay park can be accessed off Pearl Street off S Water Street in Thunder
Bay.

[Ontbirds] South London Dickcissels - Updated Directions

2017-06-16 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
I didn't realize that Scotland Drive was so long I didn't care to look at the
map long enough to realize its length. I was under the impression the road only
stretched between Wellington and Wellington. This is a mistake on my part.

I headed south on Highbury, then turned right onto Scotland Drive. It was only
a kilometer or so until I found the first bird. They should be fairly easy to
find as they were vocalizing.

Again sorry for my mistake.

Good birding,

Quinten

[Ontbirds] Dickcissels South of London

2017-06-16 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Today I observed 3 male Dickcissels (DICK) south of London and the 401 on
Scotland Drive. The DICK were singing frequently, and were fairly easy to find.
There are reports of females being seen, and the habitat looks good, so I
imagine that they will attempt to breed.

Scotland Dr. is south of the 401, and can be accessed of either Wellington Rd.
S or Highbury Ave. S.

[Ontbirds] Sedge Wren, Nightjars, and Piping Plovers in Bruce

2017-05-28 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Today there was at least one Sedge Wren to be found at Isaac Lake. It was
singing frequently and responded well to pishing. It appeared to be building a
nest as it was carrying nesting material and returning to the same clump of
grass roughly 8-10 meters from the road. It was seen, and eventually
photographed (http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S37225406), at the bend in
the road once you get into the open marsh.

Isaac Lake can be accessed off highway 6 north of Wiarton by turning down Isaac
Lake Rd.

On Saturday night, we had more than a dozen Common Nighthawks fly over us while
on Little Cove Rd. Also present were at least five Eastern Whip-poor-wills. We
managed to see the silhouettes of two, and they appeared to be doing some
aerial combat. Very close to the road around 9:30 pm.

Little Cove Rd. is accessed from highway 6 just south of Tobermory.

There were two Piping Plovers at Sauble Beach around 6:00 pm. They are nesting,
and there are barriers up so they should not be a hassle to locate. One was on
the nest while another was working its way along the shoreline. The male was
unbanded, which I thought was a bit interesting. Very cooperative.

Sauble Beach is about 20 minutes south of Wiarton. When driving down Main
Street toward the lake, turn right and you should find the enclosure on the
beach.

[Ontbirds] Birds at Rondeau, Willets and Stilt Sandpiper at Hillman Marsh, and Black-necked Stilt at Tilbury Sewage Lagoons

2017-04-30 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Today I checked out Rondeau, Hillman Marsh and the Tilbury Sewage Lagoons.

>From 5:45 until 12:10, I spent the day at Rondeau. Despite the wind, we
>managed to find a few decent birds including a Yellow-breasted Chat on South
>Point Trail, which was seen from the main trail just past the lighthouse "side
>trail". Also at Rondeau was a Blue-winged Warbler in the same area as the
>chat, and a singing White-eyed Vireo. Common Loons seemed to be on the move
>today. I could not find the White-winged Dove, but it was seen today. This
>bird is still missing from my life list!

Around 1:30, we arrived at Hillman to a group of 50+ Willet, which were very
cooperative and fairly close to the viewing stand. A single Stilt Sandpiper, a
bird which is an uncommon spring migrant, was also seen with the yellowlegs.
There was also a pair of Trumpeter Swans at the back of the shorebird cell.

Finally, on our way home, we checked Tilbury Sewage Lagoons. Here, with the
help of another birder, I was able to locate the Black-necked Stilt on the
right side of the road leading from the entrance. It was at the back of the
pond to the left of an isolated bunch of phragmites. It was with a Lesser
Yellowlegs.

Rondeau: can be accessed off Kent Bridge road or Rose Beach line (Chatham-Kent)
$17 admission

Hillman Marsh: can be accessed off Mersea Rd 2 between Mersea Rd 19 and 21
(Essex)

Tilbury Sewage Lagoons: from Tilbury, head north on Queen street, then turn
onto Lakeshore 303/Cloutheir street, turn into the wastewater management plant
driveway and drive all the way back. There should be a pond on both sides of
the road, the stilt was in the right one (Essex)

[Ontbirds] Corner's Corner Little Blue Herons - NO on Sat. 22

2017-04-22 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Hello Birders,

On Saturday the 22nd, a group of birders were present at Corner's Corner off
Fruit Ridge Line near Sparta in Elgin County. Despite us being there for a few
hours, we were unable to locate any of the Little Blue Herons by the time we
left around 8:50 pm. This however does not mean they are not in the area, as
there is plenty of suitable land around Corner's Corner that they could be
roosting at.

Birds in the area include numbers of Wood Ducks, American Crows, and a Winter
Wren

[Ontbirds] Snow Goose, Cackling Geese, Swans at Aylmer WMA

2017-03-05 Thread Quinten Wiegersma via ONTBIRDS
Today there was an immature Snow Goose, a pair of Cackling Geese, and hundreds
of Tundra Swans at Aylmer Wildlife Management Area in Elgin county. Some
patience is required to find the Snow Goose, but the Cacklers remained close to
the wheelchair accessible viewing blind. Tundra Swans were very abundant, but I
suspect soon they will continue the journey north.

Other birds seen include Green-winged Teal, Black Ducks, Mallards, Common
Merganser, Northern Pintail, American Wigeon, blackbirds, and a Merlin.

To reach Aylmer WMA, turn off onto College Line from Imperial Dr., then follow
the signs along the road.
