[Ontbirds] High Park Raptor Watch

2018-09-05 Thread Tim McCarthy via ONTBIRDS
Hello Raptorfans, especially Broad Wing chasers. It looks like the weather may
be about to change into just the kind of thing our good old Broadwings like. I
mean the kind that makes them fly in great big balls over High Park. Can't say
for sure but if they do and you're not there, you're gonna be plenty hawked off
until I give you the next heads'-up. Stay tuned for further (hopefully
exciting ) news starting on

[Ontbirds] High Park Raptor Watch

2017-08-31 Thread Tim McCarthy via ONTBIRDS
From: Tim Mccarthy via Ontbirds

Fellow Birders

Its just around the corner. No, not Christmas. Its the High Park Raptor Watch.
We need you to come out and give us a hand. If you're new to Raptorwatching do
not despair. Spend some time with us and I guarantee you will become a good
Raptor watcher. All you need is a decent pair of binoculars. I will even supply
you with bins if you don't trust yours. Bring a lawn chair and your lunch
though there is a pretty good restaurant right beside Hawk Hill.We start
tomorrow, Sept. 1 and watch every day from around 10 am until mid afternoon,
right through to the end of November, weather permitting. The middle 2 weeks of
September are the best days to see Broadwings, the most spectacular of Nature's
migrants. Best flights occur when the wind is from the Northwest but anything
can happen on Hawk Hill. Look for the Grenadier Restaurant in the middle of the
Park and we will be on the hill just to the North of it. Though the trees have
grown, Hawk Hill is still the best place along the migration ro
ute to see the largest number of species.

I will not post on this site unless something spectacular or unusual happens.
Instead, each day take a look at the HMANA site, http://hawkcount.org/. Iff you
happen to see Broadwings wherever you are please post your sightings.

See you on the Hill, and good Hawking

[Ontbirds] High Park Raptor Watch Oct.22, 2016

2016-10-22 Thread Tim McCarthy
From: Tim Mccarthy via Ontbirds

Hello to all my Hawkwatching friends;

I regret to say that from now on I must stick to the numbers but its been great
fun reporting and thanks for all your encouragement..

Today was one of the best ever for high Park. We had perfect Raptor weather
with Northwest winds. I got my woolies out this morning to make sure the moths
had left me my share.

We saw Turkey Vultures by the Committee - 418

Bald Eagles by the Convocation - 3

Harriers by the Harrassment - 5

Sharpies by the Guard - 129

Coopers by the Barrel - 3

Red Shoulders by the Epaulette - 28

Red Tails by the Ubiquity -351

Rough Legs by the Variation-1 (so its not
really collective but why break the spell)

Am. Kestrels by the Compactness - 1

and Unidentified Raptors by the Distance - 2

Come on out tomorrow, the Park is a fine sight and I don't think the Raptors
are nearly as done yet as the Bluejays. If you don't have binoculars we will
lend you a pair for the day.

Hawk Hill is in the middle of Toronto's High Park, right beside the Grenadier
Restaurant. High Park is a fantastic place for birding any time but right now
Benny's Buffet is worth seeing and of course Grenadier Pond. Go there to see a
merry-go-rounds of Shoveller Ducks. When at the Hill you may get a Bluebird.

There is sporadic bus service to the Restaurant but I recommend taking the
subway and getting off at High Park station to walk South through the Park. Get
there early if you're driving or you'll have to fight for a parking space.
Dress warmly and We'll see you tomorrow.

Tim the Hawk Doc

Thanks to everyone who came to Hawk Hill and participated in our best Raptor
count in a number of years. We completed the Fall High Park Raptor Watch on
November 30th. Complete details and analysis for the three Greater Toronto
Raptor Watch locations are available on the Toronto Ornithological Club Website
(www.torontobirding.ca) . This includes the High Park, Cranberry Marsh and
Iroquois Shoreline 2006 results. While the Iroquois Shoreline has had a very
successful year, there is not enough data available to set up the graphs for
that location.

Since Monday we have counted just over 900 Turkey Vultures streaming south west
over Leamington area. Today, 25th, there were over 400 in one kettle with some
sharp shined hawks amongst them. The Kettling lasted for over 45 mintues and
rose above the cliffs on Lake Erie slowly drifiting westward between Leamington
Dock and Kenyon Point Road west of Leamington. Got a couple of photos of the
kettle which was probably 1,000 metres high with a continuous stream off the
top.
Juncos are back--today, the first day, in this area along Lake Erie--can
winter be far behind?
