Hi,
I think you're referring to the Asus PC. I'm not sure of the URL to find
info on it, but if you type "Asus" or "EEE PC" in a search engine you should
be able to find the company web site.

Here's how to do this:
1. Go into the Folder in OE containing the messages.
2. Press CTRL A to highlight all the messages.
3. Press Shift Delete, and when it asks if you are sure you want to delete
all messages, Pres Y for Yes or Tab to the Yes button and press Enter or

Re: [Blind-Computing] network places shortcut gone

2008-08-28 Thread Rick Justice
Hi Daleen,
Give this a try:
1. Go to the control panel, then display, and press enter.
2. When the display properties opens, shift tab once, then right arrow once,
this should place you on the desktop tab.
3. Tab to customize desktop button, and press the spacebar.
4. When this dialogue opens, you will be presented with a list of 3-state
buttons,
so down arrow to the one for my network places, and spacebar to check it.
5. Okay your way out of the display properties, and Alt F4, to close the
control panel, you are done.

I can't say I've ever been on Target's website, but I heard about that
case. I guess now people will have to pay more attention to how
accessible their websites are.

Hi, I'm having a problem with my sappi 5 voices. I can get some of my

some reason. I even tried repairing the instalation or whatever in the add
remove programs dialog.

considered Target as one of the worst sites out there. Hopefully this will
wake up developers and large companies to make sites more accessible. Follow a

Re: [Blind-Computing] CD burning problem

2008-08-28 Thread Lisa
Hello,
I did slow the burn speed down in Nero, and I made another audio CD. This
time it didn't skip, or mess up. This seams to have fixed the problem.
Take care,
Lisa

Re: [Blind-Computing] Help Needed With Listening To Books In Winamp

2008-08-28 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Cathy,

Once you get to a spot that you wish to pause and resume later, and,
assuming you're using Jaws, press the letter M to place in the placemarker,
at which point a dialog box will pop up asking you to name the placemarker.
You can either leave it blank, or name it, it really makes no difference, as
the placemarkers are numbered.

Later on, when you resume playback, pause the playback, then press
alt+shift+M to get a list of the placemarkers, and arrow down to the
placemarker you want to start from, and press enter.

At this point, resumed the playback with the spacebar or the C key.

Hope this helps, and, of course, if you are using anything other than Jaws,
forget everything I've just said. LOL.

Happy listening.

[Blind-Computing] Help Needed With Listening To Books In Winamp

2008-08-28 Thread Cathy Harris
Could someone help me with this situation?

If I am listening to a book in Winamp, and want to close it out.. But, want
the place marked so that when I do return, I can pick up right where I left
off...how do I do it?

In addition, if I have several books which I am listening to, at the same time,
is there a way to book mark them in the same manner?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Re: [Blind-Computing] CD burning problem

2008-08-28 Thread Donald Marang
I believe that I last ran into this in 2002, when the computer had trouble
keeping up. I am not sure, but at the time I had the option to go from the
"blazing" speed of 4x to 2x. That refers to 4 times faster than audio
playback. Have not checked lately, but I think they commonly burn at least
16x now.

Re: [Blind-Computing] network printer question - purchase recomendations

2008-08-28 Thread Donald Marang
Sorry to change the topic slightly. But my ancient, reliable HP Officejet
v40 series printer might have just died. The power LED does not light I am
told by my daughter. I have tried to get her to unplug the printer and plug
it into another room to see if it is really dead. She has resisted so far.
It could just be a power wire not plugged in correctly. The printer is
located in our credenza under the kid's computer on a pull out shelf. The
wires back behind the computer are a mess! These simple types of problems
drive me crazy. Of course, it could be a failed power adapter or the
printer itself. It is very old. Any clever suggestions on how to make sure
it is dead?

Meanwhile, I have been looking for what I might want (need) to buy to
replace it. I buy most of my computers and accessories at CDW.com by phone.
I found they have decent prices, good customer service and surprisingly,
excellent technical support. In fact, I found their support better than
most manufacturers, like Sony. I have a personal preference for HP printers
because they are very reliable and their email support for a 6 year old
printer is awesome! I could not get my new Dell laptop running Vista to
print to my shared printer on my home network. They sent me a detailed,
personalized response with a solution I would have never thought of within
an hour. They also sent a follow up message. I saw a HP multifunction
printer on their website, an HP Officejet 6310 for $ 118. It has USB,
Ethernet and can print directly from most digital camera Flash cards. It
has a flat bed scanner, which I am not sure I need. It would certainly NOT
fit under the credenza where the printer is now and I already have an Epson
flatbed scanner on top of the credenza. We don't use the printer very much.
But when we do it is important and time critical (homework). I have some
concerns about power consumption and ink drying out. My printer is on
constantly. Are there new printers that "wake up" when needed and
automatically protect the ink from drying out? I am fairly ignorant in
printer advances over the last 10 years.

The only complaint I have against my current printer is the paper feed for
the copy / fax functions is ridiculous! My wife would prefer to drive to
the pharmacy and pay to fax something! The new printer would need to have a
decent paper feed for at least 10 pages.

Any suggestions?

Re: [Blind-Computing] Recycle Bin not making selected sound

2008-08-28 Thread Patricia Dunbar
Hi,

Sometimes I have to nmake sure something is I believe not selected in the
list of items to delete before I get the option to "empty the recycle bin"
otherwise, I only hear, delete..restore...
So if you choose the delete option, you won't hear that sound. But if you do
like I said, then the option as previously stated will appear and will make
the sound.

Re: [Blind-Computing] CD burning problem

2008-08-28 Thread Donald Marang
I have never used Nero. But many years ago, I ran into similar problems. I
had to slow down the burn speed. If you like Nero in general, you might
want to check the options. There is usually a way to set the burn or write
speed.

No jaws doesn't slow down, or have an echo when I burn a CD. Actually Nero
doesn't behave any differently then it did when I burned Cd's that played
with no problems.

Re: [Blind-Computing] CD burning problem

2008-08-28 Thread Desiree Oudinot
When you're burning a cd, does the voice for Jaws also slow down and
have kind of an echo? This is what happens to me when I burn a cd, and
I was told it may be a problem with my motherboard, so I was wondering
if this was also the case for you, because if it's just Nero that
makes it a lot easier for me to fix.

Re: [Blind-Computing] network printer question

2008-08-28 Thread Frank Ventura
Victor, although I do agree that network capable printers are readily
available in affordable price ranges my comments were based in
comparison to using an older non network capable printer on a networked
PC which the original poster probably already owns. Also even if the
original poster does not hav an older printer at his disposal many folks
like to save a few bucks by purchasing any of the myriad of low cost MFD
style printers that can be had for $50 to $100. Of course these lack
some advanced features, with built in networking being most obvious to
our discussion but my opinion was based on the fact that the original
poster mentioned tha he had several PCs at his disposal and if one of
them is available continuously then using it as a print server can be
more economical.

Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] network printer question

Hi Frank,

I have to take exception to what you said about network printers being
expensive.

Most printers now a days, may come with that function, the ability to
plug
right into the router using an RJ 45 cable.

The more expensive ones are the wireless kind, as those tend to be a bit

more pricy, however, the hardwired ones are not, and, in some cases,
come as
standard equipment these days.

I have a Brother MFC 685 C, a multifunction stand alone fax machine,
with
both auto and manual flat bed scanning features.

It's got, both a hardwire connection, using USB, RJ45, or even RJ 11,
or,
you can elect to use the wireless function, and have it connected to all
of
the wireless devices in your home, with or without the router.

The great thing is, this MFC has the ability to act as it's own router,
so
plugging into the router, wirelessly or with wire, is redundant,
however,
the router function of the printer will only work with wireless devices,
as
there is only the one hardwire port for the RJ 45, which is a bit of a
downside, but it's a great printer, nonetheless.

The unit came complete from Staples for 325, with spare ink cartridges,
an
integrated card reader, , separate cartridges for the black, cyan,
magenta
and the last colour, and a very large four and a half by three and a
half
viewable screen that flips up for better viewing of images from a
digital
camera.

Just some of the advantages.

In any case, I think it was a good buy, and there were literally
hundreds of
models on display, and I got the one I was most familiar with, as I have

owned Brother MFC units in the past and found them wonderful printers.

Just thought I would add to what you had said.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Moving an Icon from the desktop to a folder

2008-08-28 Thread Frank Ventura
Hi, many folks put folders on their desktops with groups of similar
shortcut items. For example I have a "streams" folder on my desktop that
contains about 50 shortcuts to internet streams that I frequently listen
to. Having those 50 icons on my desktop would be too much clutter but
the folder works well for me.

Interesting, hmmm.

So he wanted to put some icons in a folder somewhere else, is that it?
But wonder did he make a hot key/shortcut key to access them if he
needed
them?
Otherwise, if he put them like in my documents in a folder, he would
have
open that up go to the folder open it and then enter on the icon?
I don't understand why anyone would want to do that?

Oh well to each his own..

Re: [Blind-Computing] Moving an Icon from the desktop to a folder

2008-08-28 Thread Frank Ventura
John, not to start a flame war here but unbeknownst to most users the
way cut and pasting in Windows works is that when you select cut (either
with control x or through the edit menu) Windows actually makes a
temporary copy of the item. Only after the item is successfully pasted
into the destination does Windows delete the original item. This is done
to create the safety mechanism that you desire through your method.
Taking the extra step you mentioned is not necessary.

Alex,
Far be it from me to question someone with your experience but I do not
agree with your recommended procedure.
Cutting as you have suggested might or might not work and if
unsuccessful,
would result in the icon being lost entirely. I'd like to suggest that
the
item be copied using Control C, pasted into the folder, verified as
being
active, then and only then, should the original icon be deleted.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Recycle Bin not making selected sound

2008-08-28 Thread Gerald Levy

Go to the Control Panel and select Sounds and Audio Devices. Control Tab to
the Sounds page, then tab to the tree view of events for which sound schemes
can be assigned. Arrow down the list until you reach "Empty Recycle Bin".
Tab once and make sure a sound scheme is already assigned. If not, you can
assign one that suits your fancy from the list of available sounds.Hope
this helps.

Re: [Blind-Computing] CD burning problem

2008-08-28 Thread Gerald Levy

Try using a different CD burner program like Express Burn. It's very
JAWS-friendly and easy to use. Even a caveman like me can use it without
difficulty. You can download it for free at:

Re: [Blind-Computing] network printer question

2008-08-28 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Frank,

I have to take exception to what you said about network printers being
expensive.

Most printers now a days, may come with that function, the ability to plug
right into the router using an RJ 45 cable.

The more expensive ones are the wireless kind, as those tend to be a bit
more pricy, however, the hardwired ones are not, and, in some cases, come as
standard equipment these days.

I have a Brother MFC 685 C, a multifunction stand alone fax machine, with
both auto and manual flat bed scanning features.

It's got, both a hardwire connection, using USB, RJ45, or even RJ 11, or,
you can elect to use the wireless function, and have it connected to all of
the wireless devices in your home, with or without the router.

The great thing is, this MFC has the ability to act as it's own router, so
plugging into the router, wirelessly or with wire, is redundant, however,
the router function of the printer will only work with wireless devices, as
there is only the one hardwire port for the RJ 45, which is a bit of a
downside, but it's a great printer, nonetheless.

The unit came complete from Staples for 325, with spare ink cartridges, an
integrated card reader, , separate cartridges for the black, cyan, magenta
and the last colour, and a very large four and a half by three and a half
viewable screen that flips up for better viewing of images from a digital
camera.

Just some of the advantages.

In any case, I think it was a good buy, and there were literally hundreds of
models on display, and I got the one I was most familiar with, as I have
owned Brother MFC units in the past and found them wonderful printers.

Just thought I would add to what you had said.

Hey Mike,

It works the same way for me. I hear no sound if I try to do it straight from

know why it works this way, but it does.

Hi Donnie,

Thank you, it works doing it that way, but when I open the recycle bin from
the desktop and empty it from there, that is where I hear no sound. I'll
just have to change the way I empty the recycle bin. Thanks again. Take
care.

Hey Mike,

Try this:

1. Highlight the Recycle Bin icon
2. Press your Applications key
3. Arrow down to Empty Recycle bin and press Enter
4. You will be asked if you are sure you want to delete these items
5. Press Enter on Yes, and you should hear your sound.

[Blind-Computing] CD burning problem

2008-08-28 Thread Lisa
Hello everyone,
I'm having a strange problem when I burn an audio CD. When I burn a CD the
last 4 or 5 tracks skip, or sometimes they don't play at all. The CD doesn't
skip when I put it in my computer and play it using winamp, but when I play it
in my Bose radio the last 4 or 5 tracks will mess up. I'm using Nero to burn
my CD's. I gave a friend of mine the CD that kept messing up, and she ripped
it to her computer. Then she made two copies of it. I gave her a blank CD of
mine, and she used one of her blank CD's. When she gave me the CD's that she
made neither of them skipped, or messed up in my bose radio. I thought about
trying to burn my CD's using Windows Media Player, but I don't know how to do
that. Does anyone have any ideas of what my problem might be, and how I can
fix it? I really like making CD's, so any help with this will be very much
appreciated! I'm running windows XP home addition, and jaws 9.
Take care,
Lisa

Re: [Blind-Computing] Wireless Network Question

If you are not planning to use the wireless connection, go into the
control panel and disable or remove any reference to the wireless NIC
(network connections).

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Wireless Network Question

I have a weird thing going on from time to time, an item in my system's
tray
pops up to do with wireless connection problem.
I'm not using a wireless connection.

However, about 2 years ago when I first purchased this computer, I did
have
a wireless Net Gear card installed, but it didn't work out.
So I went back to the use of my ISP modem which is a SW1000/Gateway
2-wire
model. So why would this thing be popping up in my system's tray?

I just clicked on it for curiosity and was given 4 options...

windows firewall settings
wireless connection...
repair...
wireless network connections...

I am using AVG pro version 7.50 which has it's own firewall. I went to
the
one in the list for windows firewall, and it is turned off. Which I
believe
it's suppose to be since I use AVG.

So how can I get rid of this wireless thing for good?

I have a HP Pavilion desktop running window's media 2005 and Jaws 8.0

Thanks,

Patricia

Re: [Blind-Computing] Converting VHS To MP3

2008-08-28 Thread Frank Ventura
Not to hijack the thread, but a work around for blind folks to play MP3
CDs on their home stereo systems is to plug in one of those portable
personal MP3 compatible CD players (you know the ones that are a little
larger then a CD themselves) into the line in on their stereo systems
and use the controls on the personal CD player to navigate the tracks.
Usually those are pretty easy to operate without sight.

Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Converting VHS To MP3

I can cover the cable details very quickly. On the back or sometimes
even
on the front of the VCR there will be three RCA jacks for the video and
audio output. RCA jacks are the type of small round, one conductor plug

with a ground shield that simply plugs in (no turning or screwing on)
These
are the type of connectors typically used to connect stereo speakers.
The
three wires are for Left channel, right channel and composite video.
Normally, they are positioned as follows from left to right on the VCR,
left
audio (color coded white), right audio (color coded red) and video
(color
coded yellow).

You will need to buy a special audio cable. On one end it has to have
two
RCA plugs (male) and the other end must have a standard stereo headphone

plug (male). These type of cable should be readily available at Radio
Shack
or perhaps even at Wal-Mart.

To connect the computer to the VCR, plug the headphone plug end of the
cable
into the microphone jack on the computer. The other end of the cable,
which
is actually two wires, plugs into the left and right audio RCA jacks on
the
VCR. Nothing needs to be plugged into the video jack on the VCR. If
you
can not determine the colors on the cable, it will still work the left
and
right channels will just be reversed.

One issue you might run into is playing the MP3 CD or DVD on a standard
VCR,
will be starting the audio. Most VCRs will display a menu of the MP3
files
available on the disk when inserted. This might be difficult to use for
a
blind user, but on most VCRs you can simply press the play button to
start
playing the first MP3 and continue to the next when the first is
finished.

Re: [Blind-Computing] network printer question

2008-08-28 Thread Frank Ventura
If you don't mind leaving one of your computers on all the time then you
can connect any printer you like to one of your computers and turn on
printer sharing and it will be available to all of your other computers.
The advantages of going this route are tow:
1) Of course, this is 100 percent accessible with a screen reader
2) This choice allows you to use any printer you like.
The other option is to obtain a network printer that can connect
directly to your router or switch and is assigned its own IP address on
your network. These printers are of course more exspensive and by far
limit your choice of printers but you don't have to have a computer
running to act as a print server.

There are devices available through many of the computer stores that
connect between the VHS unit and the computer. They claim they work well. I
have only tried the audio version and couldn't get the software part to work
with JAWS. Perhaps someone else would have better luck with it?

Hey Mike,

Try this:

1. Highlight the Recycle Bin icon
2. Press your Applications key
3. Arrow down to Empty Recycle bin and press Enter
4. You will be asked if you are sure you want to delete these items
5. Press Enter on Yes, and you should hear your sound.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Recycle Bin not making selected sound

2008-08-28 Thread Donnie Parrett
Hey Mike,

Try this:

1. Highlight the Recycle Bin icon
2. Press your Applications key
3. Arrow down to Empty Recycle bin and press Enter
4. You will be asked if you are sure you want to delete these items
5. Press Enter on Yes, and you should hear your sound.

darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light

Re: [Blind-Computing] Keyboard not responsive

2008-08-28 Thread Frank Ventura
Is the computer responding to the keyboard, if you press the windows
key on the keyboard and the press U then R, will the computer reboot? If
so then the computer is functioning properly but JFW is not giving any
keyboard echo. If I rember correctly the shortcut to change the keyboard
echo is jaws key plus the number 2 on the number row.

I have a folder on my desktop called games, which has around 25 of its own
shortcuts in, and there are still around another 40 on my desktop itsself,
and I standardly use the first letter of their names to relatively quickly
find one of them.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Moving an Icon from the desktop to a folder

2008-08-28 Thread Alex Stone
John, I've never come across a situation where cutting and pasting files
didn't work. Also, since most desktop items are shortcuts, you're not likely
to lose the file anyway.

Alex,
Far be it from me to question someone with your experience but I do not
agree with your recommended procedure.
Cutting as you have suggested might or might not work and if unsuccessful,
would result in the icon being lost entirely. I'd like to suggest that the
item be copied using Control C, pasted into the folder, verified as being
active, then and only then, should the original icon be deleted.
