Re: [Blind-Computing] CDex Failed to Load

2009-02-22 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Margaret, it's ok. Windows XP and above doesn't include ASPI drivers. So in
that case allow CDex to use the native SCSI drivers instead by selecting no
in the question.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] CDex Failed to Load

Hi All,

I downloaded CDex 1.51 from the jaws-users page and have a feeling I may not
have installed it correctly. I got a

CDex
Failed to load the wnaspi32.dll driver!graphic 972 Use the Native NT SCSI
library driver option instead?
Yes No

message when I tried to load the program from the desktop.

Which item do I want?

I chose the recommended full installation.

I'm running XP Home with SP 3, and JAWS 7 to 10 are on the machine. I tried
loading CDex with JFW 9.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Margaret

Re: [Blind-Computing] help my IE is not working

All can think of offhand (if problem is still there), is make sure window is
properly maximised, try refreshing jaws using jaws key + escape key, try
something like Ctrl + A to see if there's any content to select as such in
the virtual buffer of jaws, and maybe also just try turning off jaws, and
then restart it.

Hi Patricia,

Not sure if you saw my response on the Jaws list, so here it is.

do you get windows sounds, and/or Narrator to come up when you activate
it?

If you do, this may be a Jaws issue, and not necessarily a system volume
problem like that other person suggested.

If you aren't getting any sound of any kind, then it may be the volume is
set to low, or the mute is on, in which case, you may be able to do the
following:

press insert+F11 to bring up the system tray. You'll have to trust that
it's there and hope for the best. Smile.

Once you do this, press the letter V and it should take you straight to
the
volume icon. This is assuming, of course, that the Volume icon is the
only

icon there starting with the letter V. If you absolutely know that it is
not, then we may have a bit of trouble here.

Suffice it to say, I don't think it hurts to try this anyway.

Once you've pressed the letter V, tab twice to the left single click
button

and press the spacebar. You may have to wait a few seconds, as the Master
Volume control may not pop up right away.

Doing this will bring up only the slider and mute button for the master
volume, so, after you've waited a couple of seconds, press the home key,
and
this will raise your volume to 100%. If this still doesn't bring any
sound

back to your computer, tab once and press the spacebar, as you will be on
the mute checkbox, and if it's checked, this will bring back the sound.

Once you've done all of this, and you still don't have any sound, I'm
afraid
you have to start looking in a different place for your solution, possibly
a
loos connection on the back of your computer, make sure the power button
on

the speakers are turned on and the volume of the speakers are turned up
enough to hear it's sound, and also check to see if the power cord is
plugged in to the electrical outlet where you have it plugged in.

Other than that, you may have to get someone sighted to look at the sound
card properties in the device manager and see if there are any yellow
marks

beside the sound card.

If there are, you may have to go in and check out it's settings and make
sure it's enabled.

Let us know how you do.

Re: [Blind-Computing] No Speech or Window's Sound

2009-02-22 Thread Jack
I've been following this thread, and I need some clarification. Is there
absolutely no sound at all? If this is the case, then you shouldn't be able
to hear Narrator either. Or, is it a case of there's no system sounds and
you can't hear Jaws?
Because if you can hear narrator, then you obviously have sound.

David, Linksys IP's are often 192.168.1.1. If not, and you can hardwire to
the router, find out what the default gateway is by typeing ipconfig in a
command prompt. That will be the ip address for your router. Hope this
helps.

Re: [Blind-Computing] need an I p address

2009-02-22 Thread David Ferrin
Right after I posted my question last evening my memory did come across the
correct address. Never the less thank you to those who replied. I have been
receiving a buffering error while using Kerio firewall here lately so I
figured on giving AVG plus firewall a shot. I use super anti spyware and win
patrol so do not seem to need AVG's complete internet security package and I
do like the anti virus with firewall in a single bundle. I had to of course
dump avast at least for the trial period. I went this route because I knew
the firewall was accessible and it's pretty tough to find a stand alone
firewall that is screen reader friendly.

David, Linksys IP's are often 192.168.1.1. If not, and you can hardwire to
the router, find out what the default gateway is by typeing ipconfig in a
command prompt. That will be the ip address for your router. Hope this
helps.

You may have to wait a few seconds, as the
Master

Volume control may not pop up right away.

Doing this will bring up only the slider and mute button for the master
volume, so, after you've waited a couple of seconds, press the home key,
and
this will raise your volume to 100%. If this still doesn't bring any
sound

back to your computer, tab once and press the spacebar, as you will be on
the mute checkbox, and if it's checked, this will bring back the sound.

Once you've done all of this, and you still don't have any sound, I'm
afraid
you have to start looking in a different place for your solution,
possibly a
loos connection on the back of your computer, make sure the power button
on

the speakers are turned on and the volume of the speakers are turned up
enough to hear it's sound, and also check to see if the power cord is
plugged in to the electrical outlet where you have it plugged in.

Other than that, you may have to get someone sighted to look at the sound
card properties in the device manager and see if there are any yellow
marks

beside the sound card.

If there are, you may have to go in and check out it's settings and make
sure it's enabled.

Let us know how you do.

Hi Jack
yes, you had it correct, no sounds at all from pc speakers.

I wondered though, would it be worth trying a system restore, I mean if all
the settings have been checked and there are no muted items, then it might
be worth trying that.

short of the wav sounds either very low or muted, I'm not sure what else to

I've been following this thread, and I need some clarification. Is there
absolutely no sound at all? If this is the case, then you shouldn't be
able

to hear Narrator either. Or, is it a case of there's no system sounds and
you can't hear Jaws?
Because if you can hear narrator, then you obviously have sound.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Winamp Question

2009-02-22 Thread Jacob Kruger
Along the lines of what the others have said, jaws key + H, and jaws key + W
will give you sets of keystrokes.

Pretty sure the jaws key + H ones are global ones, whereas the jaws key + W
ones are specific to the piece of winamp you're in, but it might be the
other way round.

Two other things are that you use Ctrl + tab to move between the different
pieces of winamp, and to access it's menu system, use Ctrl + space in the
main window preferably, then move down to the winamp submenu, and go from
there.

Audio conversion software.

Re: [Blind-Computing] WINDOWS XP VERSUS VISTA, QUESTION

2009-02-22 Thread Aran_A

Hello,

I don't use Vista usually, but my wife's and daughter PCs have Vista.

I found it very easy to use Vista after using XP for many years.

I installed Jaws 9 on both PCs, and I thought that it is easy to learn,
although I must admit that I don't use Vista very often, and I am very far
from being an expert!

Just play with PC/laptop for a few hours, and I am sure that you will be
able to use it proficiently.

Best wishes,
  Aran

Subject: [Blind-Computing] WINDOWS XP VERSUS VISTA, QUESTION

Hello group. I have a problem. These days when you buy a computer from
someone like Dell, their default is to load Windows Vista. I have never
used Vista and I'm a bit afraid that I might not be able to navigate around
it. I have also heard that Vista won't run certain programs. Apparently,
Microsoft agrees since they are now working on Windows 7 which appears to be
a vast improvement. Last night, I studied the Jaws book on Vista and it
appeared to be different but not impossible to use. Can I get some pointers
from someone who does use Vista. I'm considering buying a laptop. If I buy
one with XP, all I have to do is turn the thing on and it will come up,
usually in the Desktop. I understand that using Windows Key + M still
brings you to the Desktop. But I have been warned about some kind of
logging in requirement. Our company is moving to Vista within the next
couple of months.

1. Is there a way for me to experiment with Vista without buying it?
2. How difficult would Vista be to use for someone who never has seen it
before?
3. How exactly do you get the thing to work, step by step?
4. Does Jaws work well with Vista? I'm using Jaws 10.

Sorry for the annoying questions but I want to get this right the first
time.

Re: [Blind-Computing] No Speech or Window's Sound

2009-02-22 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
I wasn't going to weigh in on this volume control thing as it probably is
fouled up from so much advice, some of it good and some of it not so good.
The Sticky keys sounds come from the PC speaker.
The best way to get out of narrator is alt plus F4 because tabbing around to
the taskbar and trying to use a menu is not a sure thing once you've opened
a few windows, the WindowsKeyPlusU keystroke opens one window for Utility
Manager and another for Narrator.

I know it sounds dumb but I've seen and done stranger things.
First make sure your speakers didn't get plugged into the wrong port.
I've taken support calls from people who had cords unplugged for every
device you can imagine and this does not make you dumb, just human.
I won't enumerate my various blunders over the last 15Plus years of
computerdom.

Ok, you need to turn your speakers up loud to first see if the volume is
muted.
Type WindowsKeyPlusR to bring up the startmenu's run dialog and type
SNDVOL32 and then press enter to open Volume Control.
The command is different for Vista and is SNDVOL.

Wait a while before you start tabbing to give the window a chance to open
and gain focus.
Otherwise tabbing will do something else unpredictable like move you around
from desktop to taskbar, or maybe nothing.

Tab twice here to get to the first mute control, it could be called mute
all or a few other things depending on your sound card.
Here is where you grab your speakers' volume control and turn 'em up nice
and loud and press the spacebar to unmute the volume. If you don't hear any
difference there is one more mute to try.
If you heard the hiss in your sound card come on then shift tab to the
volume slider and turn it up loud with the home key which is either the top
middle key on the six-pack if you're using a standard desktop keyboard or
the seven on the numpad.
If you're on a laptop and don't know where to find these keys, just uparrow
a brazilion times and I do mean lots!
Hey if this worked you're done, other than setting things to your liking and
following the recommendations for a download at the end of this message
which can keep this kind of thing from tying you up again.

Let's assume now that fiddling with the first mute did nothing.

Tabbing 3 or four more times puts you on another mute control. I say three
or 4 because if you have a soundcard with advanced properties and have them
checked in the Volume Control's options menu then you'd need to press tab
four times because you have an extra control there to tab beyond.

Let's press tab three times and asume for now you have no advanced controls.
Turn up those speakers and press space here until you hear the soundcard's
white noise or hiss.
If pressing space on this mute made a difference then stay with the hissiest
of the two settings you are toggling with space since that means you unmuted
something with the spacebar.
If that doesn't work, press escape in case you were on the advanced button
instead of the mute; there is no way to know for sure. We don't want to try
out your treble and bass controls with no sound and escape will cloase that
Advanced dialog if we accidentally opened it.

tab again and and assume you got to the second mute and press the spacebar.

If you actually got hiss, continue on, otherwise the rest of this is
probably a waste of your time.

Since you unmuted things and have no speech, your volume got turned down
somehow but we're halfway there by getting to be able to hear the lovely
hiss from your sound card.
You should be on a mute control here, shift plus tab to it's corresponding
volume slider and press page up a few times or uparrow for a long long time.
If this didn't give you sound, shift tab again and press page up a couple
times. Don't hit the spacebar along the way as we like that unmuted noise
you found.
Page up gives you a 20 percent raise in volume so two presses of the page up
key should be plenty to get speech back to start with.
Continually pressing shift plus tab followed by a couple page up's should
get you sound/. The worst damage we've perhaps done along the way (because
we're all lost in the maze of your invisible sound card) is to overbalance
your speakers to one side or the other by pressing page up in the balance
control instead of the volume slider.
You of course will fix that once you get speech back.

If you repeat the shift tab keystroke followed by a couple page up's enough
times you'll be back where you started when you opened volume control and
should have speech.
Tab through the volume control and set things to your liking. Pageup, well
you sure know what that does - twenty-percent; up and down or right and left
arrow keys move the sliders in baby steps and home gives you full volume but
on the balance control that keystroke will move you completely to one ear or
the other.
The end key is not your friend in here as it takes a volume slider all the
way to the bottom.

Now go get a copy of Quickmix.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Serotek's SA To GO free service

2009-02-22 Thread JOHN JUSTICE
No, as far as I know, it lasts indefinitely. As you have already
discovered, no doubt, your access to Serotech services is limited. No
support of any kind is available.
When you go onto their web site, a file is loaded onto your computer. If
your security settings are configured to deny that kind of file, you will
have some serious problems with running SA To Go.

Other than that, it works reasonably well.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Serotek's SA To GO free service

2009-02-22 Thread JOHN JUSTICE
Correct, Mark. There's a one time fee only with no software maintenance
agreement fees. If you sign up for that service, you can also pay an
additional fee to have SA to go loaded onto a portable drive which will then
work automatically in any computer as long as the security settings don't
prevent it from doing so.
They have a web site which is filled with some pretty incredible links to
things like internet radio, described movies and so on.
All in all, it's a very good program but there is one caviat. It isn't
nearly as capable as Jaws and it will not configure separately for different
programs as far as I know.

Not sure about that last bit, however.

The letter B for next track and letter Z for previous track keystrokes are
unfortunately not listed there, at least not in Jaws10.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Serotek's SA To GO free service

2009-02-22 Thread Mark
Hi
SA to go has been very useful for accessing some college web pages that
JAWS could not read but I have two things I have yet to figure out. First how
does one read the current line? I have had to resort to up arrowing to the
previous line and back to the line I want to read. Not very efficient. Second,
is there a way to advance across a line one word at a time? Moving one letter
at a time takes a long time.
 Thanks.

God bless,

Correct, Mark. There's a one time fee only with no software maintenance
agreement fees. If you sign up for that service, you can also pay an
additional fee to have SA to go loaded onto a portable drive which will then
work automatically in any computer as long as the security settings don't
prevent it from doing so.
They have a web site which is filled with some pretty incredible links to
things like internet radio, described movies and so on.
All in all, it's a very good program but there is one caviat. It isn't
nearly as capable as Jaws and it will not configure separately for different
programs as far as I know.
Not sure about that last bit, however.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Serotek's SA To GO free service

2009-02-22 Thread JOHN JUSTICE
Hi Mark. Since my last posting, I have learned that the free version will
automatically shut down after an hour or so. I'm not exactly sure of the
time but it does close itself out eventually.

Now in answer to your question, In order to advance one word at a time, use
Control Right Arrow. To highlight the word, use Control Shift Right Arrow.

That seems to work for me.

[Blind-Computing] New version of NVDA

2009-02-22 Thread Rosemarie Chavarria
Hi, everyone. I heard that there's a new version of NVDA that just came out.
Does anyone know the link for this new version? I'm thinking of trying it out.
If it works, I'll use it to shop on the Albertsons website. I like Albertsons
better than Vons because they seem to have a better selection of foods to
choose from.

Many thanks in advance.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Serotek's SA To GO free service

2009-02-22 Thread Rosemarie Chavarria

Hi, Mark,

If you want to read the line you're on, you'd use the insert up arrow on the
num pad like you do in Jaws. To read a word, you use either control right
arrow or control left arrow.

Hope this helps.

Hi
SA to go has been very useful for accessing some college web pages that
JAWS could not read but I have two things I have yet to figure out. First
how does one read the current line? I have had to resort to up arrowing to
the previous line and back to the line I want to read. Not very efficient.
Second, is there a way to advance across a line one word at a time? Moving
one letter at a time takes a long time.

Thanks.

God bless,

Correct, Mark. There's a one time fee only with no software maintenance
agreement fees. If you sign up for that service, you can also pay an
additional fee to have SA to go loaded onto a portable drive which will then
work automatically in any computer as long as the security settings don't
prevent it from doing so.
They have a web site which is filled with some pretty incredible links to
things like internet radio, described movies and so on.
All in all, it's a very good program but there is one caviat. It isn't
nearly as capable as Jaws and it will not configure separately for different
programs as far as I know.
Not sure about that last bit, however.

Do I understand right that they have a pay version that one can load on

Does the Serotek SA TO GO.com online free service have a time limit when
running it? Does it expire on you after a certain time? Signed up to it
today and it worked very well.

Re: [Blind-Computing] New version of NVDA

2009-02-22 Thread Bill Gallik
John,

I used to use PeaPod quite effectively, but that was almost five years ago
now when I lived in Wheaton, IL. It was quite a complex web site and
instructing anybody to use it even then would be quite challenging via
e-mail. But I will start by suggesting that you become very familiar with
each of the features that JAWS offers in Internet Explorer. Particularly,
frame lists, links lists and pop-up menu handling.

In the winter of 2003/2004 it would commonly take me three hours to submit a
$125 grocery order and we never bought meats and seldom bought produce
through the PeaPod web site.

[Blind-Computing] Speech and Sounds Restored

2009-02-22 Thread Patricia Dunbar
I wish to thank all who were kind enough to come to our aid in this matter
of no speech/sounds.

We have been restored back to all working as should be.
I will admit I put the speakers plug into the wrong hole and after my son
who can see came over and did all of the suggestions even a system's restore
and still no speech/sounds, he noticed a speaker something on the screen and
looked behind the computer and saw the problem and once he put it into the
3rd hole instead of the 4th that I had it in, all sounds and speech was
restored.
However, I am still puzzled as to before I unplugged the speakers and
emailed the lists here, why would this have happened in the first place?

Many Thanks to all,

Patricia

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Serotek's SA To GO free service

Does the Serotek SA TO GO.com online free service have a time limit when
running it? Does it expire on you after a certain time? Signed up to it
today and it worked very well.

Re: [Blind-Computing] WHERE CAN YOU FINE THE WEBSITE FOR SEROTEK

Well, the obvious choice would be www.serotek.com. And in this case, the
obvious choice wins.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] New version of NVDA

Hi, everyone. I heard that there's a new version of NVDA that just came
out. Does anyone know the link for this new version? I'm thinking of
trying it out. If it works, I'll use it to shop on the Albertsons website.
I like Albertsons better than Vons because they seem to have a better
selection of foods to choose from.

Many thanks in advance.
Rosemarie
