Re: [Blind-Computing] Screen Readers Supporting Other Languages

2010-04-23 Thread Jacob Kruger
If you have a look at the downloads page of FS website for alternative
languages, you might find something mildly useful - for example, if I want
to just quickly scan something in Afrikaans this side, the flemish voice is
around the best, but otherwise, I start NVDA with all it's languages,
including Afrikaans, and use it, but, unfortunately, neither of these seems
to specifically support either language, so you might need to look for
something at least closer - don't know what more common language would be
closer, but anyway...

Here's the link to that FS download page, and for most of the voices, they
seem to have audio sample clips to let you decide:

[Blind-Computing] Is Avast 5.0.507 Accessible?

Re: [Blind-Computing] Is Avast 5.0.507 Accessible?

2010-04-23 Thread David Goldfield
Anna,

Thanks for the info. The avast Web site claims that the 507 release of
version 5 is reasonably accessible. If I had a test computer that I didn't
care about I would try it for myself, but as removing Avast might involve
more drama than I want to deal with I just wanted to get the scoop from
someone who's already tried that release.

I think that the blindness community really needs to organize an advocacy
campaign to try to convince the manufacturers of antimalware software to
make their products totally keyboard-friendly. I don't think it's good that
we as blind people use a certain antimalware program due to its
accessibility as opposed to because it's actually good at what it does. I'm
not saying that AVG and MSE aren't good choices. I'm saying that they
shouldn't be our only choices just because it's the only thing our screen
readers will work with out of the box. Mccafe and Norton should be totally
accessible, although given what just went down with Mccafe this week I'm not
sure it would be my first choice. grin Seriously, does everyone agree and
what can we do about this to start an organized accessibility campaign to
make this work. I'm not suggesting militant actions ... No taking up arms
and storming into Norton's offices or anything of the kind. Just
well-written emails indicating the problems and letting these folks know
that their products need to be accessible or else blind folks will go with
competition that already is screen-reader friendly. If I knew that a whole
group of people had decided to use MSE over my product due to the fact that
MSE is accessible I would take notice and see what I could do to keep those
customers happy.

[Blind-Computing] Accessing contact folders

2010-04-23 Thread Melissa Riley
Hi again everyone. At least it's friday, right?

Ok, so this outlook thing is not resolving itself politely, so here's my
nextthought;

Alright, as those who've been trying to help me know, I cannot access any of
my previous outlook profiles. I've tried a system restore, which turned out
to make me cry, I've tried uninstalling/repairing/reinstalling Outlook, as
well as the entire Office suite, nada. The only thing I can do is create a
new Outlook Profile, which I have done. So, I can use Outlook, but all my
saved contacts and emails are locked away from me, somewhere on this mean
laptop.  So here is my next question;

Can I somehow find, open, and copy those contacts into my new Profile,
without being able to access that older profile?

The error message I get when opening the older profile is simply cannot
open the Outlook Window. That's it. I can deal with this all just fine,
if I could have my 400 + contacts back...

Not sure why this couldn't happen to me after finals,

Melissa

Re: [Blind-Computing] hHP update interfering with emails

2010-04-23 Thread Patricia
The more I think about this, it does seem to be where I disabled it in
system's tray.
It's flukey doesn't always pop in there, guess only when the updates are
recommended, just another one of those annoying popups to deal with.
Now in my control panel where the HP updates reside, it does say remove
only, so apparently it can be removed. But I really hesitate telling you to
do that for fear it could affect your computer in some way, or it's just my
paranoya coming out

problem. Thank you all very much for your help.

Hi, Patricia,

I found HP updates in the programs menu and hit enter on it. Then I tabbed to
the cancel button and hit enter. Then I tabbed to a dialog box that said do
you want to close the application. I hit enter on the yes button. Hopefully
that took care of the problem.

Re: [Blind-Computing] hHP update interfering with emails

2010-04-23 Thread Patricia
Let's hope it does, but if not, I think what Mike suggested is the best
solution.

He said to uncheck it in ms configuration on the startup page.
And after looking there, he's correct. I have several items unchecked and
that being one of them, so that must have been where I disabled it.

  : : Hi,
  : :
: : I had that problem a good while back on my HP computer. It's a
  : notice
  : :that
: : HP puts out called, Program Updates.
: : I did disable that, but right now, as of this writings, I cannot
  : : remember
  : : how I did it.
: : Maybe through the start menu maybe there's a submenu for it, I
  know
  : : it's
  : :in
: : my control panel, but don't thing that's where to go, think you
  can
  : : just
  : : remove it there.
: : Maybe also look on your C: drive under programs HP has some stuff
  : : there
  : :too.
: : If I can get my feeble brain to workin', can let you know.
: : Does it show up in your system's tray?
