It's not locked up my machine touch wood. As I say, this could be because
I am using Windows 7. Screen readers use different technology to
communicate with the display screen, called the Microsoft Mirror Driver
technology. This supposedly makes multiple screen readers compatible with
each other, which can be problematic under XP or earlier. This technology
was introduced in Windows Vista.

Hello all,
I just want to tell you about an interesting new screen reader made
by

German company Baum. It's called Cobra (I know, it's named after a
snake,
hahaha). Joking aside, it contains lots of interesting and inovative
features, such as the ability to capture the screen and perform on
the fly
OCR. No other screen reader I know does this. You can download it,
and try
it as a 30 minute reboot situation from www.baum.com. What's
interesting
though is that although a reboot is necessary to run the 30 minute
demonstraiton again, Cobra actually will still speak, but will
interrupt and
remind you that the demo has expired. Again no other screen reader
does
this.
Enjoy!

[Blind-Computing] Cobra screen reader OCR

2010-07-07 Thread Jacob Kruger
When I use the cobra key (caps lock) + O, it tells me that OCR has been carried
out on the screen, but how do you then read the resulting textual

In other words, what happens to it?

I tried finding it in the help file etc., but their help contents don't seem to
be too well structured/laid out etc., and, for example, I wish cobra would
render a form of keyboard help...

Re: [Blind-Computing] daily tip

2010-07-07 Thread Rick Justice

Power-line technology has been around for some time,
and can be used with telephones, ethernet and even speakers.
You are simply using the existing wiring in your home to carry the data
stream
from a router or such device to another device plugged into an outlet in
another area of the home.
The devices used to transmit the signal thru the electrical wires are called
bridges,

and a typivcal setup would be as follows:
computer A, is connected to a router by an ethernet cable.
another cable is connected to the router and a network bridge, which is
plugged into an electrical outlet.

computer B,
is connected to another bridge in another location, which is plugged into a
standard electrical outlet.
Data is transferred from one device to another using the house wiring
instead of making long runs of ethernet cable.

A person would have to research the technology to get more specific info.
These days, wireless options are less expensive and easier to setup.

Powerline Networking

A powerline network relies on a network that all homes already include by
default, the power network. The electrical system in your home consists
of one or more fuse boxes and copper wiring that runs between each power
outlet to give your electronics the current they require to operate. A
powerline network simply taps into this existing network and uses the
copper wiring to pass data bits between powerline network adapters.
Powerline adapters utilize a technology called OFDM (orthogonal
frequency-division multiplexing), which enables the copper wiring to
carry multiple data streams even while powering appliances and devices
throughout your home. The latest devices also work independent of line
voltage and current frequency to provide a consistent and reliable
networking experience.
This Internet access solution makes a lot of sense because there's always
an outlet near the computer and another outlet near the Internet-enabled
devices you'll likely be using. And if you can plug in a power adapter
and an Ethernet cable, you can install and configure a powerline network
yourself in minutes.

Re: [Blind-Computing] partitioning a large hard drive

2010-07-07 Thread Rick Justice

There are several reasons for partitioning a hard drive,
here are the 2 that come to mind immediately:
1. Installing multiple operating systems.
2. Keeping personal data separate from the operating system, in the event
the o/s crashes and needs to be re-installed.
This is also handy for keeping the system partition size to a minimum for
imaging purposes.

A powerline network relies on a network that all homes already include by
default, the power network. The electrical system in your home consists of
one or more fuse boxes and copper wiring that runs between each power
outlet to give your electronics the current they require to operate. A
powerline network simply taps into this existing network and uses the
copper wiring to pass data bits between powerline network adapters.
Powerline adapters utilize a technology called OFDM (orthogonal
frequency-division multiplexing), which enables the copper wiring to carry
multiple data streams even while powering appliances and devices
throughout your home. The latest devices also work independent of line
voltage and current frequency to provide a consistent and reliable
networking experience.
This Internet access solution makes a lot of sense because there's always
an outlet near the computer and another outlet near the Internet-enabled
devices you'll likely be using. And if you can plug in a power adapter and
an Ethernet cable, you can install and configure a powerline network
yourself in minutes.

Hi,

I'm confused about the topic but In windows xp, if you want to add or remove
a component, there is an option in the add/remove thing in the control
panel. If you chose that option, you have to insert your windows xp disc.
I can't speak for newer versions of windows.

Hi Mike,
Windows components
You can free more disk space by removing optional
Windows components that you do not use.
When you choose this option, it will take you to a dialogue in the
Add/Remove programs applet.
In this applet, you can remove components of the operating system such as
Windows Media Player, faxing, internet tools etc.
This particular option, can be tricky to navigate, and should be used with
the understanding that removing components of the operating system
may result in unexpected side effects, since other functions of Windows may
depend on these components to operate properly.

Installed programs
You can free more disk space by removing programs that
you do not use.
Choosing this option, will take you to the Add/Remove programs applet, and
that one is self-explanatory.
This option is a good opportunity for users to clean up programs that are
not used, and free up more disk space, keeping the computer in good working
order.

System Restore
You can free more disk space by removing all but the
most recent restore point.
This option, does what it says, and should be performed from time-to-time,
since these extra restore points
use up disk space, and with time will bog down a system.
HTH,
Rick Justice

Hello Anna;

well, curiously I took a look in my display/customize/desktop and, I didn't
see IE in their either.

it's my understanding that, this was caused by one of the earlier updates,
and, if you really wanted to have the IE in your customize desktop display
view, it would require making changes to your registry. it's probably way
easier to create the shortcut icon from the start-menu and, then send to
desktop.

if you need more help, please let me no.

hello there;

give this a try;

1, desktop,
make sure there's nothing selected, by pressing the f5-key,

2, alt+enter=display properties,

3, now, shift+tab=themes tab,

4, right arrow one time, you should hear, desktop tab,

5, now tab and enter on,
customize desktop,

6, tab one time, and find the internet explorer icon, and make sure it's
checked.

now just tab, to the okay button.

hope this helps.

The NLS players are provided at no cost by your local Talking Book Library.
They provide them to those with a disability that limits one's ability to
read regular print. Not sure where you are at, but contact your local
Talking Book Library to sign up to get one free.

Again no other screen reader
does
this.
Enjoy!

Hi All,

I've tried and tried, but to no avail.

I am running a Toshiba L500 laptop with Windows 7 64 bit edition home. I am
trying to get Windows to appear like Classic Windows, but for the life of
me, I simply can't do it. I should also say that I'm using Jaws 11 latest
build 64 bit edition.

I've gone and sought out the Microsoft Technical bulletin on how to do this,
but some of the steps they're suggesting just aren't there.

A perfect example is how they tell you to switch to the classic start menu.

They say to go to the Control Panel, then to appearances and
personalization's, then to the personalization link, then to taskbar and
start menu properties, then to the start menu tab, and on that tab, you're
supposed to select classic start menu. Well, first and foremost, the
appearances and personalization link isn't there, and while the
personalization and taskbar and start menu properties links are there, this
selection to choose the classic start menu is simply not there.

All I've got on that tab is a customize button, and a few other things, like
show recent programs and recent files checkboxes, and one other thing, but
like I said, I've gone through the entire thing, and nothing is thee.

So, does anyone have any suggestions?

I've also found that the start menu has two icons for Internet Explorer, one
for 64 bit, and another stating just Internet Explorer. I figured out that
it's the second one I want, but there isn't even one on the desktop.

I've got other icons like computer and control panel on the desktop, but the
important ones like Internet Explorer and a few others I was looking for
just aren't there.

So, can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Please?

Thanks.

Hi Scorpio,
You have answered your own question really. There is no classic Windows
like there was in Vista or earlier. You are stuck with the Windows 7
look and feel. The only thing you can do is change the theme to Windows
Classic. This will remove the desktop from the alt+tab list, as well as
turn off things like aero that we don't really need anyway. But that is
all you can do. Sorry.

  Hello all,

I just want to tell you about an interesting new screen reader made by
German company Baum. It's called Cobra (I know, it's named after a snake,
hahaha). Joking aside, it contains lots of interesting and inovative
features, such as the ability to capture the screen and perform on the fly
OCR. No other screen reader I know does this. You can download it, and try
it as a 30 minute reboot situation from www.baum.com. What's interesting
though is that although a reboot is necessary to run the 30 minute
demonstraiton again, Cobra actually will still speak, but will interrupt and
remind you that the demo has expired. Again no other screen reader does
this.
Enjoy!

Re: [Blind-Computing] Cobra

2010-07-07 Thread chris hallsworth
It's not locked up my machine touch wood. As I say, this could be
because I am using Windows 7. Screen readers use different technology to
communicate with the display screen, called the Microsoft Mirror Driver
technology. This supposedly makes multiple screen readers compatible
with each other, which can be problematic under XP or earlier. This
technology was introduced in Windows Vista.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Scanned PDF Documents

2010-07-07 Thread Ishe Chinyoka

Hi,

To read scanned PDFs, you can try a little niffty program called PDF2OCR. It
will help you open mostly books that are scanned into PDF format (Google
books come into mind).
This is a free program developed by a blind programmer, found at
http://www.nonvisualdevelopment.org, click on PowerBasic link and you will
get its download.

As for commercial offerings, I use Abbyy Fine Reader -- this one can even
read images such as GIF, jpg or png formats as long as it can find text. You
can also use Open Book which does the same thing.

Cheers,

Ishe

You could use Microsoft Office to scan and read the page.

Go into your start menu, then into the Microsoft Office sub-menu, then into
tools, and you'll find two pieces of software there you can use.

The first is Microsoft Office Document Scanning. You can use this to print
your documents, then scan it into your computer using a scanner. Once
scanned, it will open up in the second program, that being Microsoft Office
Document Imaging. Once in that program, you can send the text to Microsoft
Word, and it will perform OCR on the image, and send any text it finds to
Microsoft Word for you to read.

If you don't have a scanner and printer, you might be able to open up the
PDF document using the Image program, then sending the OCR text to Word that
way, but I can't remember if you can open up other formats other than TIFF
formats with the Microsoft Office Document Imaging program, but, it's worth
a try.

[Blind-Computing] daily tip

2010-07-07 Thread David Ferrin
Powerline Networking

A powerline network relies on a network that all homes already include by
default, the power network. The electrical system in your home consists of one
or more fuse boxes and copper wiring that runs between each power outlet to
give your electronics the current they require to operate. A powerline network
simply taps into this existing network and uses the copper wiring to pass data
bits between powerline network adapters. Powerline adapters utilize a
technology called OFDM (orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing), which
enables the copper wiring to carry multiple data streams even while powering
appliances and devices throughout your home. The latest devices also work
independent of line voltage and current frequency to provide a consistent and
reliable networking experience.
This Internet access solution makes a lot of sense because there's always an
outlet near the computer and another outlet near the Internet-enabled devices
you'll likely be using. And if you can plug in a power adapter and an Ethernet
cable, you can install and configure a powerline network yourself in minutes.

Re: [Blind-Computing] NEW VERSION OF JAWS WORKSWELLWITHWINDOWSLIVEMAIL

2010-07-07 Thread Donald Marang

Hi John,

I do not see an item in my View menu for Message Pane to check or uncheck.
There is a Layout item. If selected, the first control in the dialog is a
"Message Pane" button. When I activate this nbutton, additional controls
appear to activate the Message Pane, and if set to determine where it is
placed. It was already disabled. However, I played around with it off and
on. I have always turned the Message Pane off for security purposes. That
way I can delete questionable messages before they are automatically opened.
No matter how this setting was set, it made no difference on my computer! I
think I should try Thunderbird.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Don,
In the View menu, you will find a reference to the Message Pane. if you
uncheck that option, you will find that the Delete key works as it should.
that was one of the tips I mentioned. With the Message Pane active, Jaws
doesn't know how to deal with it and tends to get a bit confused.
Actually, those messages are deleted but they don't immediately disappear.
That, like some other situations, is a strange behavior on the part of
Windows Live Mail.

I have Windows Live Mail and it finally works very well with the latest
JAWS release! I have had many problems getting this to work with JAWS 11
so have been stuck using JAWS 10 until now. There seems to be something
funky in my user account that only efgfects JAWS 11 with Windows Live
Mail. It mostly works if I remove all of my personal and 3rd party
scripts. The latest release does not seem effected by scripts as before
with one exception, the Delete key will not reliably delete messages
being read in a separate window.

Hi, I updated to the latest version, yet in Windows 7, still Jaws does
not read Windows Live Mail flags though i labeled them.

Wow John, thanks for all those terrific tips concerning JAWS 11 and
Windows Live Mail.

Re: [Blind-Computing] question about email signatures

2010-07-07 Thread Donald Marang
I have three signatures defined in Windows Live Mail on Windows 7. I can
see how to set a different signature to different mail accounts in the
Advanced dialog of the Signature Options. I used to use this feature.
However, this is not how I want to use multiple signatures now. I also
monitor three email addresses with this client. However, the signatures I
have defined are Name (default), Vinux, and wslist (Williams Syndrome). I
have the other two signatures defined for particular mailing lists, not by
account. In Windows Mail, I was able to highlight the default signature and
select a different signature from the menus, Insert > Signature > WSList.
For some reason, the Signature item in my Insert menu does not have a
sub-menu! It sounds like for others, this is a sub-menu if more than one
signature is defined. I like the features and layout of Live Mail in
general, but the quirks are driving me crazy!

It all depends on what third party client you use. I know with windows
live
mail, and outlook 2007 you are able to create multiple signatures, and
even

set what account you want them to be sent on. If you need any more help,
you can email me at

Good luck!
