Hello all,

(www.applian.com). Works well on Windows 7 with no problems as far as I

[Blind-Computing] daily tip

2010-08-13 Thread David Ferrin
Daily Tip:
IE 8 Tabs

Did you just close Internet Explorer 8 when you meant only to close a tab?
Oops. Tabbed browsing can be a hazard if the wrong settings are in place.
First, don't despair. As soon as you recognize the error, restart IE and, in
the Tools menu, click Reopen Last Browser Session. In many cases, this will
save your set of open tabs on the last IE window you had open. To keep this
from happening again, use the Tools menu to access Internet Options. In the
Tabs section on the General tab, click Settings. Checkmark the Warn Me When
Closing Multiple Tabs box.

[Blind-Computing] IE 9 News

2010-08-13 Thread Chris Hallsworth

Getting Ready For Internet Explorer 9

After four platform previews aimed at demonstrating the power of the
underlying Internet Explorer 9 engine to developers, Microsoft is ready
to unveil a public beta
 of
the IE9 Web browser on
September 15. Many organizations are still struggling with the decision
to move from IE6 to IE8, so what should businesses expect from the new
Microsoft browser?

IE8 leads the browser pack, but Microsoft is preparing to launch the
beta of its successor.
While developers
have had months to play under the hood, Microsoft has not yet revealed
what the actual IE9 browser interface will look like. Based on some of
the IE8 feedback, and the trend competing browsers like Chrome and
Firefox have been following, I would expect a cleaner, simpler interface.

Users generally want the browser to just be a Web browser. The
performance of the browser--both the speed at which it renders each
visited page, and compatibility with industry standards so that Web
pages just work--are significantly more important factors than bells and
whistles, and whiz-bang features.

Based on what we know so far from the IE9 platform previews, the latest
Microsoft browser has fully embraced HTML5, and has a native JavaScript
engine, codenamed "Chakra". Chakra, combined with features like
hardware-accelerated graphics help IE9 to be blazing fast.

Microsoft can only hope that IE9 is as successful as IE8 has been.
Internet Explorer 8 has been a tremendous success
--leading
all browsers in market share
 and
growth rate, and driving a rebound in overall market share for
Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, Internet Explorer 6
refuses to die and is still the default browser in many organizations.
Now, IE9 is on the horizon.

If the IE8 timeline is any indication, IT admins will not need to put
any serious thought into transitioning to IE9 any time soon. There was a
year between the launch of the public beta for IE8 and its official
release. Assuming IE9 follows a similar timeline
;
IE9 will not be the new official Microsoft Web browser until next
fall--a few months ahead of the rumored release of Windows 8.

And, if the public beta of IE9 is any indication, organizations that
still rely on the legacy Windows XP operating system will not need to
worry about switching to the new browser at all. The IE9 browser only
works with Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Once IE9 launches, it will be one more nail in the coffin of IE6, and
the exclusion of Windows XP could help expedite pulling the plug on that
venerable OS as well. There is a degree of comfort that comes with
sticking with what works--however when IT admins look deeper at the
increased support effort and costs associated with the instability and
compromised security of Windows XP (especially when combined with IE6),
and the improvements in efficiency and productivity in Windows 7
 it
becomes increasingly evident that Windows XP isn't "working" as well a

Yes, I do want to monitor these feeds and will certainly follow your advice.
For the time being, I have about 15 feeds on my Internet program and

Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Blind Cooltech podcasts

If you want to keep track of podcasts on this feed as they are created,
you will want to subscribe to this feed. There are many separate programs
that do this. I prefer to watch feeds in Internet Explorer 8. Here are
some basics.

Often when browsing the web, JAWS will announce when it finishes loading
that there is a feed and so many links on the page. If it says there are
feeds available, pressing Alt + J will bring up a context menu near the
address bar listing the various feeds available on that page. News sites
always have such feeds available. It is also possible to use the Search
for feeds menu item in the Tools menu.

Once an XML RSS feed is being viewed, if you are interested in getting
updates from that site or listen regurarily to their podcasts, subscribe
to the feed. Most feed pages have a plus sign near the top of the page
that will subscribe you to that feed by pressing Enter on the link. I
finsd some sites, especially feedburner pages might not be in the right
format for to subscribe in IE. If you select the Subscribe to this
feed... menu item in the Tools menu. this seems to geyt put into the
correct format for IE. When you subscribe to a feed, it gets added to
your feed list. This is much like the favorites list. In fact, it is
handled from the same area on the toolbars.

To go to your feeds list, press Control + J. It will present a tree view
of your feeds. It is possible to place them in groups, much like
favorites. If the site has added items or articles to the feed since the
last time you viewed the page, a "- new" will be announced after the feed
name in the list. Press Enter to view the latest items in the feed. It
will only show the new items. It keeps track of what you have viewed
before.

The very last link at the bottom of every feed page is a link for
Properties. Hitting Enter here will bring up a dialog. These properties
let you select if you want IE to automatically download attached files,
which are also commonally called podcasts. You might also want to sabe
space on your hard disk by adjusting the number to be archived. For
weekly podcasts, reducing the default from 200 to 4 will still retain a
copy for a month.

I normally copy podcasts I am interested in to a podcaasts folder which I
use a couple of times a week to copy to my Victor Reader for relaxed
speeded up listening. To copy to this podcast folder, I use the
previously mentioned keystrokes. Press Insert + NumPad Minus (-),
followed by Numpad Star (*)., and select "Save target...". Sorry, I have
no idea what the laptop keystrokes would be.

I think that might cover the verry basics of RSS feeds. By the way, RSS
stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a technology to allow the
viewer, like IE to check every so often for new materieral from a website
and download it automatically. The default frequency can be set to once a
day or every 15 minutes, depending on your needs. This is set on the
content page of the Internet Options dialog.

[Blind-Computing] addressing envelopes using jarte

2010-08-13 Thread ROSEMARIE CHAVARRIA
Hi, everyone,

The other night I downloaded the latest version of jarte. What I'm wondering is
can you address envelopes the same way you do in MS word or would I have to
create a template? I read the help documentation for jarte and it talked about
clicking on items using the mouse.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

far as I can tell. I also have Replay A/V, but can't get it to detect my

Re: [Blind-Computing] Blind Cooltech podcasts

2010-08-13 Thread Don Marang
If you want to keep track of podcasts on this feed as they are created, you
will want to subscribe to this feed. There are many separate programs that
do this. I prefer to watch feeds in Internet Explorer 8. Here are some
basics.

Often when browsing the web, JAWS will announce when it finishes loading
that there is a feed and so many links on the page. If it says there are
feeds available, pressing Alt + J will bring up a context menu near the
address bar listing the various feeds available on that page. News sites
always have such feeds available. It is also possible to use the Search for
feeds menu item in the Tools menu.

Once an XML RSS feed is being viewed, if you are interested in getting
updates from that site or listen regurarily to their podcasts, subscribe to
the feed. Most feed pages have a plus sign near the top of the page that
will subscribe you to that feed by pressing Enter on the link. I finsd some
sites, especially feedburner pages might not be in the right format for to
subscribe in IE. If you select the Subscribe to this feed... menu item in
the Tools menu. this seems to geyt put into the correct format for IE. When
you subscribe to a feed, it gets added to your feed list. This is much like
the favorites list. In fact, it is handled from the same area on the
toolbars.

To go to your feeds list, press Control + J. It will present a tree view of
your feeds. It is possible to place them in groups, much like favorites.
If the site has added items or articles to the feed since the last time you
viewed the page, a "- new" will be announced after the feed name in the
list. Press Enter to view the latest items in the feed. It will only show
the new items. It keeps track of what you have viewed before.

For weekly
podcasts, reducing the default from 200 to 4 will still retain a copy for a
month.

I normally copy podcasts I am interested in to a podcaasts folder which I
use a couple of times a week to copy to my Victor Reader for relaxed speeded
up listening. To copy to this podcast folder, I use the previously
mentioned keystrokes. Press Insert + NumPad Minus (-), followed by Numpad
Star (*)., and select "Save target...". Sorry, I have no idea what the
laptop keystrokes would be.

I have no idea what you have attempted to do. The link below. if opened

feed. If you are using JAWS, you can move to the next item, sometimes
called articles, simply by pressing the 2 key, since these are level 2
headings. There is a link after the description for the attached MP3 file.
Clicking on this link will start your media player. If you want to
download it, press Insert + NumPad Minus (-), followed by Numpad Star (*).
This will bring up the context menu. Select "Save target..." and select

If you decide you like the feed you are using, press Alt + T, followed by
f to subscribe to the feed. If you need more information about viewing
feeds and subscribing to podcasts with IE, hust ask.

I just use the IE 7/8 compatible RSS feed. That is currently how I get all
of my podcasts. The feed is:

Does anybody know the address of Blind Cooltech? When I type the
internet address of that site I am getting a company which deals with
air-conditioning hardware.

DCheck you have the latest video drivers. If so then do a repair on the
JAWS program including the video intercept.

I am not sure I understand exactly what you are attempting to do in your
situation. Are you wanting to make backups of essential CDs, such as
Windows XP? If so, I think you want a utility that will make an ISO file
copy of the CD. It will make an exact image of the CD into one container
file. It will even capture the boot information if the disk is bootable.
It will not directly let you look at individual files without a special
archive style program. It will also not work with most copy protected CDs,
such as games. An ISO file can be burnt back to a blank disk at any time
or some programs can be used to mount the file just as if you inserted the
disk.

There are many utilities to work with ISO files. My favorite is called
ISO Recorder. It provides simple wizard style dialogs to rip (copy from
disk to file) and burn (copy from file to disk). It will also work with
DVD data disks, which can contain 4.7 GB of storage, on Vista and Windows
7.

Hello, I am new at this so forgive me if it comes off as a stupid
question! I am trying to put all my programs that are on cd on my
extneral drive. Do I need to use nero to do this or can I simplely copy
all the folders that are on the cd to the drive renameing it with the
program title? Someone said something about virtualizing the program
first. thank you Heather
