Hello, just curious, what version of Jaws are you using? Or, are you
using another screenreader alltogether? I'm sure this won't have any
impact either way but just wondering for diagnosis purposes... Thanks.

Re: [Blind-Computing] accessibility of Kindle

2012-02-21 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
If you can remove the digital rights management protection from your
purchased Kindle books, you could convert it to other formats, readable
with jaws, or other screenreaders.

I have found that changing the amazon .azw extention to mobi and then
converting it to txt via the zamzar.com site, works flawlessly.

You could do the same with unprotected .epub and .pdf ebooks.

However, you can read them in the original format with the
Adobe digital editions version 1.8.1 reader, which is free, provided
that you pair its authorisation with that of your Adobe ID.

I also use malwarebytes and I also get that message only if I use the exit

To avoid that message, don't use the exit button. Use the JAWS cursor and
click on the close button at the top right of the display.

If by default hitting enter on an audio link the file starts to play simply
do the following:

Close out your audio player with alt + F4.
At that point the link should indicate visited status. If it does and it
should hit your applications key and pick save target or something like
that. At that point a standard download dialog box opens up and you should
be good to go from that point.

This is some what of a loaded question as it has multiple parts, so let's
try and take them a little at a time.

Gold Wave will convert MP3 files in to wave by a simple save as command. The
next part would be to burn them to disk converting them to the audio CD
format in the process. The files you are seeing on your CD IE CDA files
stand for compact disk audio and they are simply for the lack of a better
term pointers to the digital content on the disk.

So what burning programs do you have at your disposal. I am not a big fan of
iTunes and know nothing about real player. Gold Wave has no burning
capability unfortunately.

I have several good programs on my system but I can't seem to find how to
convert an mp3 file into one that will play in a CD player not capable of
reading those files.

I have ITunes,

Real Player,

GOLD WAVE:

One of those programs should be able to create ordinary CD disks but I don't
know how to go about it. The file types used by CD players are quite a bit
larger than mp3 files. They aren't .wav files either.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I used to be able to do this with Nero 6, but as we all know, recent
versions of that program aren't working with screen readers.

Hi Angelina,

The error message you are referring to only comes up when Jaws is running.
I had someone sighted check this message on 3 computers running 3 different
operating systems & it only came up when Jaws was running on all 3
computers. Freedom Scientific could not re-create this problem because I
only get this error message running the Pro / pay for version, & Fs only
runs the free version. So, whenever this message comes up , just press the
spacebar on the okay button to get rid of it. In closing, just close the
message, it is only a conflict between Jaws & Malware Bytes. & does not pose
any problems. Hope this helps, somewhat anyways. Take care.

   Hi everyone,

Just wondering about the current state of accessibility of the Kindle app.
Is there any way to read a Kindle book within JAWS or convert it for use
with an OCR? I assume not but thought it was worth asking. Thanks.

Re: [Blind-Computing] accessibility of Kindle

2012-02-21 Thread susan

Hi mark,
Many thanks, that's good to know. I had purchased a hard cover book via
Amazon which I needed for a church discussion group with the plan to scan
and read via openbook, only to lose it before I even left the building.
Being on a time deadline, I was panicking at the thought of a Kindle
download and struggling to deal with a bawky app. The good news is that God
was with me--the secretary had intercepted it and put it aside waiting to be
claimed, so now I can wait to deal with Kindle when and if I actually have
time to play with it.

There was a link going around where one could down load a screen reader
friendly version. I installed it, and it worked alright on the free down

Re: [Blind-Computing] accessibility of Kindle

2012-02-21 Thread Rick Watson
Hi Mark,
You've got to just use your web browser and goto amazon's kindle store then
purchase the book outside the kindle app.
Then because your kindle app is associated with your amazon account you can
tell the store via the web to send it to your kindle app. I can't remember if
you can do a sync from within the kindle app or not.
Thanks

I've used wordpress.com in the past which is free. I've also used
posterous.com which does have some limitations for those of us using screen
readers however they can be worked around & allot of very neat things can be
done with it such as posting audio & video files from email which are then
posted as a player in the web browser. I now use wordpress self installation
on my own domain & on a hosted web hosting plan.

I just sufferred through this myself. First, there are brandy new drivers
for the Refreshabraille on aph's website. I can't send the link from this
machine, but if you can't find it, send me an Email to:

wstep...@everestkc.net
and I'll provide it with some instructions I just got from APH. The other
thing, is that you cannot go through the JAWS utilities facility to make
the Refreshabraille your default display. You have to go through the
Braille facility in JAWS to make that happen.
You may be able to use the older drivers on a 32 bit machine, not sure,
but you will definintely have to use the Braille and not the Utilities
facility for selecting the display.

Good luck and let me know if I can help further.
