Re: [Blind-Computing] Using the Jill voice in NVDA
Hi Don. The last statement is incorrect. One only needs to select SAPI5 in NVDA's synthesizer dialogue box. RealSpeak will then work with NVDA. Take care. Freedom Scientific does not make these available on the website due to licensing issues (they do not want to give them away for free) They did send out a separate CD along with the JAWS Program CD which would install these SAPI5 voices with one or more versions of JAWS. I think it must have been JAWS 9 or 10, which was just before they developed the Solo Direct voices. You will need to find this CD, if you have them, install them in the normal location. Then you will need to copy them to the "magic" NVDA voices folder. Sorry, I do not know the details. It is best to record in a clean environment, that is, no extraneous sounds such as music playing, people talking, or outside noises that may partially mask, your recording. Speaking clearly and consistently into a good quality microphone is key, along with having already rehearsed the material to be read. It does take a good amount of time and setup to create a quality recording, but the end result is always worth the extra effort to the listener. Sometimes it is not possible to break a recording into several parts depending on the task at hand, but when possible, I think this works well in that it gives the person making the recording a break, and it doesn't feel like information overload to the listener. Keeping the recording focused on the topic being discussed is very much appreciated. There is adequate resources in the most basic of computers, that the person recording can make a quality recording without having any fancy or expensive equipment. Here is something that might help: Make several recordings, until you find the one that you are satisfied with, then listen to the recording and see if you can follow your own instructions Then edit as needed. I have done very few audio tutorials, because I don't like the sound of my recorded voice, but, only once did I get it done on the first run, it usually takes several times until I am satisfied. The "Instant" in the title is a clue to what it does; allows you to chat to your buddies, using just about any service, in realtime. I currently have it set up with Facebook. It works well certainly with NVDA, which I expected anyway as Mozilla is very caring with regards to accessibility and usability. But I can't see it not work with JAWS or Window-Eyes or even Cobra! To try it, please visit www.instantbird.com. Enjoy! Without a license Cobra will run as a 30 minute demo, then remind you that the demo has expired whilst continuing to function. [Blind-Computing] SpeakOn
Hello all. I have been asked by a friend to spread the word on a free program written by a blind programmer. SpeakOn is a powerful media suite and internet radio application. It uses whatever SAPI5 voices you have on your system to speak the application. No screen reader is thus required except for when it comes to reading the online manual. You can play anything from your favourite CDs to listening to your favourite radio station. The reason I wish to spread the word is that the programmer is developing the software as a hobby; no development costs are in the project. Therefore he is looking for more people to try his program. As I say it is free. May I suggest you Google for SpeakOn as I cannot remember the URL. Please also spread the word about this program, because the programmer feels that the more people are aware of it the better. Re: [Blind-Computing] Total Recorder Pro 8.x and Jaws 12
If you are using Windows XP, use the user mode virtual driver. This only captures sound from an application that is using the driver. The driver will work in Windows Vista and Windows 7, but you cannot use it as a system device simply because these operating systems do not support legasy hardware being used as system devices. For live audio, you could use Total Recorder's background recording feature. This records the stream silently without using your sound card. Hope these suggestions help. You could pop out of one and go into the other. Of course, this isn't true with XP, since it doesn't have actual DOS inside it, just an emulator. But I thought the same was true for 95 and 98 as well or at least that there was no way of entering DOS apart from the command prompt found in Windows. I was happily wrong on both counts! Apparently, it contains MS-DOS 7, which is unsupported officially (they say the last supported stand-alone version is 6.22) but which I know as a fact can run on it's own. I can even enter it without needing to use Windows and can have the computer boot directly to full DOS! I found all the details here. http://www.ctyme.com/msdos7.htm It so happens that I have a working laptop with Windows 98 on it and even a full version of JFW 3.7! If I'm correct, this means that I can use the Windows command line to install a DOS screenreader so that when I boot without Windows, I can start up the reader and be on my way. Of course, I don't intend on staying with MS-DOS forever, but this will give me a nice experiment until I can either collect the drivers needed for this laptop, find a better one or get a desktop, put Enhanced DR-DOS onto some floppies and have someone install it for me. At the very least, I can finally! start my QuickBASIC tutorials because I have all the necessary keys (my KeyNote Gold was built with a few missing) and play around with all sorts of software. I can even switch from one opperating system to the other and try out some Windows applications if I wanted. But I do have a question. The laptop has a bios and some other drivers that specifically work with DOS. I checked them out on the manufacturer's website. I've been under the impression that a machine must have at least certain core drivers in order for DOS to be properly installed on it with no other opperating system. But is this actually true? What would happen if I loaded it onto a machine that was originally designed for XP? More importantly, could I load it onto a Windows 3.1, 95 or 98 machine if there aren't any specific DOS drivers available, since those versions of Windows had real DOS in them or does all of that depend on the fact that Windows and it's drivers are loaded? Yes. You can reinstall Windows 7 without sighted help, certainly from within Windows. If for whatever reason Windows won't boot then yes a reinstall will require sighted assistance (unless you're like me and remember all the keystrokes). The reason is the DVD itself does not provide speech as it boots a mini version of Windows called Windows PE, or Windows Preinstallation environment. Hello all. Host: Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit. Citrix client: Citrix Program Neighborhood. Guest: Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition evaluation version. Citrix Server: Citrix Desktop Delivery Controller and associated server components. I have successfully set up a connection. When I try to connect it gives various error messages, like: "The Citrix Server is not accepting incoming connections" or "The Citrix Server cannot browse to the address", something like that. Re: [Blind-Computing] XP Mode revisited
Hi Frank. It works like a remote desktop/terminal services session. From when I used XP Mode: 1. To switch from full screen to window mode, press ctrl+alt+left arrow twice. 2. As it is running like a Remote Desktop/Terminal Services session, shutting down XP Mode can't be done in the usual way. Instead you choose an option from the Windows Virtual PC toolbar, accessed with ctrl+alt+left arrow. Hope these help. The license on the host machine needs to have Remote Access enabled on it. The server does not have to be authorized. I discovered that FS is crafty because they got this idea from Microsoft's Terminal Server Licensing scheme. In other words, when you start Microsoft Terminal Services it looks for a license server on the client and thus activates Terminal Server. Hi all. Andre thanks for the clarification. In that case I would agree this is a Microsoft problem and they should fix it by the time the first service pack for Windows 7 comes out. Freeware: the software is completely free, as in free beer. NVDA is an example of freeware. Shareware: The developers make the software freely available to download, but you are not free to use it without paying a registration fee. Instead they make it available free to try for a number of days, uses, or whatever, to encourage the user to buy the program. GoldWave is an example of shareware. Firmware however is completely different. It is software built into a device. The software is part of an operating system that is also built into a device. If those voices were installed at a later time, then try add/remove programs, in Win XP, and you know where in Win 7. Please can I have your help? I'm trying to help a friend remove Microsoft Mike and Mary from another friend's laptop. They have looked throughout the Microsoft Office 2007 installation, and, unlike 2003 there is no "alternative user input" or "speech" listed anywhere! So what else can they try? They want to remove it as it doesn't seem to work on Windows 7, so what's the point wasting disk space! Many thanks in advance for your quick response. It is much appreciated.
