Re: [Blind-Computing] Defragging and Maintenance for Win/7
Hello. If I remember correctly, the defrag option should be under maintenance in the control panel. You can also access it by going to start, all programs, accessories, system tools, and then selecting disk defragmenter. As for whether or not you leave your laptop turned on, that is a personal choice. If you leave it on, it will automatically defrag at whatever time you have set. But leaving it on obviously consumes power, either from the battery or the ac adapter. hth Josh - Original Message - From: Trish trishzoellers-sc...@austin.rr.com To: blind computing list blind-computing@jaws-users.com Date sent: Mon, 15 Apr 2013 10:11:39 -0500 Subject: [Blind-Computing] Defragging and Maintenance for Win/7 Hello, Where do I find the Defrag for window's 7? So, do I envoke this maintenace button or not? Also, when I found the defrag, it said it was set to defrag at 2/a.m. each morning, well now...I am in the habit of shutting down my laptop each night, so should I leave it on so it can do this defragging? Re: [Blind-Computing] Locked out of Windows and can't get in, any helpers please?
Hello. More than likely, you're going to end up needing to reformat. If you created a password reset disk (which I assume you haven't), you could easily reset your password. There are tools you can download that claim to be able to hack your password, such as Offline NT Password and Registry Editor, but they aren't very easy to use, and you will probably need sighted assistance. With some sighted help, I tried using this tool once, but was not successful. hth Josh - Original Message - From: Steve Boodram steveboodram...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Date sent: Sat, 19 Jan 2013 13:45:25 -0400 Subject: [Blind-Computing] Locked out of Windows and can't get in,any helpers please? Hello friends, I urgently need your help please. as you all may be aware I posted previusly a problem concerning IE or any browser won't let me change my homepage from AVG security search. I was told that it probably had to do with some kind of settings in parental control and I went in there to see if I could figure out what to do. Whilst in there, I was prompted by Windows to set a password, less programs or persons could have acces and pose some kind of a security risk which I did and confirmed it in the box that followed. I created a really simple password which I am sure to remember and when I rebooted the machine I am locked out of Windows. I hear the startup sound but gets the prompt to enter my password and it never worked. So one problem lead me int another. Re: [Blind-Computing] what to do when USB devices won't recognize
Hello. It definitely sounds like the drive was damaged. The first thing I would recommend doing is plugging the drive into another computer so we can see for sure if its the drive or the computer that's at fault (more than likely, its the drive, but its a good idea to check) If the computer is the problem, than we probably have some work to do in device manager, although I'm not sure what, considering you already tried re-installing the driver. If the drive doesn't work with any computer you connect it to, you will have to try reformatting it. The first thing you will need to do is plug the drive into your computer, and see if it shows up under disk management. To open disk management go to the run dialog box by pressing the windows key with r. In the run dialog box, type diskmgmt.msc When disk management opens, it should show a list of all drives. If your drive appears in this list, select it and press the applications key. From the context menu, select format, and follow the given instructions to format the drive. If you find out that your computer is what's causing the problem, or you are unable to reformat the drive, let me know, and I'll see what else I can think of. hth Josh - Original Message - From: Desiree Oudinot turtlepowe...@gmail.com To: blind-computing blind-computing@jaws-users.com Date sent: Fri, 5 Aug 2011 14:33:54 -0400 Subject: [Blind-Computing] what to do when USB devices won't recognize I bought a 2tb Western Digital external hard drive yesterday. I had another one, but I bought a second one for backup purposes. I had it connected to the computer via a USB hub, and the old one connected to the back of the computer. I was copying files from one to the other. The folder was quite large so it was taking a very long time. People started doing work outside my house so I then plugged my USB headphones into the hub. I have had problems with this hub ever since I got it in that often when you plug more than one device into it, it tends to not recognize the new device. Of course I couldn't disconnect the hub, so I disconnected the headphones, figuring I'd just turn up my speakers since it was loud outside. Unfortunately, unplugging the headphones had an adverse effect. It also somehow stopped recognizing the external that I was copying files to. Now I can't get it to recognize the drive at all. Once, when I plugged it in, it said I needed to format the drive to continue, but I hit cancel and restarted the computer, hoping that it would just recognize again as I had a similar problem before and that fixed it. But no--no matter where I plug it into the computer now, it says the device has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. I then tried disabling and reenabling the driver, but no go. I feel so stupid right about now, if I hadn't plugged in my headphones I wouldn't have broken my new device. I seriously hope there's a way to fix this because I didn't buy it to break it if you know what I mean. I'm running Vista Home Premium if that makes a difference. Re: [Blind-Computing] Reading Viewing File Details in Windows 7
Hello. The quickest way that I know of to find out file info is to do the following: 1. Open the folder that contains the file that you want to view its information. 2. use the up and down arrow keys to find the file you want. 3. Now, press right arrow. Now, Jaws should announce what date the file was modified. If you press right arrow again, Jaws should tell you the file type. If you press right arrow again, Jaws should announce the file size. And of course, if you want to move back through this info, use the left arrow. As for getting the path of a file you searched, I'm not sure of a quick way to do this. However, there is a way to open that file's location. To open a file's location, do the following: 1. Go to the search box, and type what you are searching for. 2. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the file you want. 3. Press the applications key, or press shift with f 10 to open the context menu. 4. In the context menu, you should see an option called open file location Once you press enter on this option, the folder that contains the file you searched for will be opened. hth Josh - Original Message - From: Sharon Hooley shool...@clear.net To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Date sent: Fri, 08 Jul 2011 15:31:13 -0600 Subject: [Blind-Computing] Reading Viewing File Details in Windows 7 Hi all! [Blind-Computing] I can't log into my laptop!
Hi list. I am having a very serious problem right now. For some reason, I cannot log into my laptop. I have tried many times, and I know I have typed the password correctly. I think the thing that caused the problem was when I was messing around with the net user command the night before the problem happened. I was just experimenting, as I usually do, and I changed the password through command prompt. Actually, I didn't really change x; I just used the password I have already to see if I could get the command to work. So, I know my password is still the same. So, I guess the question is, can using the net user command mess up a user account, and what is the easiest way for me to log back in. I did try downloading Windows Login Recovery pro demo, burning a cd, and attempting to boot to that cd, but my laptop didn't seem to want to boot from the disc. This was still a problem, even after changing the boot priority in the bios. I have a toshiba laptop running Windows 7 Home Premeum. I am wondering what options I have left. Is their something I missed, or an easier way to get back into my machine then messing around with log-in recovery software, and trying to boot from a cd. And if not, why isn't my laptop booting from the disc I am trying to use? I usually can fix a good majority of problems I experience with my technology, but this one is a bit complicated. From the advanced boot options menu that appears, you will need to go to the safe mode option with your arrow keys, and press enter. After your computer boots into safe mode, try removing the program. There may be a better solution, but as I am not familiar with the Avast software, this is the only solution I can think of at this time. Re: [Blind-Computing] YOUTUBE AND COPYING THE VIDEO CLIPS
Hello. I'm pretty sure that coppying videos from youtube is legal. There is a free, and accessible program that can do this for, called free youtube to iPod converter. To download this program, go to dvdvideosoft.com. - Original Message - From: Josh lawdog...@comcast.net To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Date sent: Tue, 27 Jul 2010 01:17:58 -0400 Subject: [Blind-Computing] YOUTUBE AND COPYING THE VIDEO CLIPS Blind Computing members, I have a few questions about youtube and copying the video clips. One and foremost is it legal to copy a You Tube video clip (video and sound)? If not then we do not have to go any further. However if it is then let me proceed. Second Question How would a person go about saving the video clip both sound and video so that it can be copied on to a DVD? Third and final question is there any free programs that can assist with this task? The reason I am looking for both sound and video is for my sighted fiance. thank you all very much for any assistance offered on this matter. J.P. It's called Cobra (I know, it's named after a snake, hahaha). Joking aside, it contains lots of interesting and inovative features, such as the ability to capture the screen and perform on the fly OCR. No other screen reader I know does this. You can download it, and try it as a 30 minute reboot situation from www.baum.com. What's interesting though is that although a reboot is necessary to run the 30 minute demonstraiton again, Cobra actually will still speak, but will interrupt and remind you that the demo has expired. Again no other screen reader does this. Re: [Blind-Computing] friends is it safe to watch a keyboard inplainwater?
You may also want to try using a can of compressed air to clean the keyboard. - Original Message - From: Jacob Kruger jac...@mailzone.co.za To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Date sent: Wed, 14 Apr 2010 04:05:16 +0200 Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] friends is it safe to watch a keyboard inplainwater? It really depends on the keyboard itsself since some of them are specifically more or less splash proof, but I wouldn't call them water proof. To clean it, generally, you'd just wipe the keys etc. with a damp cloth, and also turn it upside down somewhere and tap it (relatively gently) on the rear a bit to try get any dust etc. out of the inner parts of it, but you wouldn't really wash it as such apart from just wiping surfaces with a damp cloth - with no water drops running off thereof.
