The course instructor quickly moves through the material sequentially but only talks about specific items in the material that are either new, or best support the topic being discussed. I would love to be able to follow along in the PDF and then be able to make notes that correspond to the item the instructor is highlighting. This is an annual training that I am required to attend each year, so in the past I've tried following along in the PDF and then ALT+TAB to write notes in the open Word doc, and I've also tried not even bothering with the PDF and just taking notes in the Word doc. The problem is that I can't match up my notes with the information in the course material. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can read through the info in the PDF and be able to take notes without leaving the program displaying the PDF. I've got access to a Windows 7 64 bit laptop with JAWS 11 and 12, a Verizon iPhone and an iPad first generation. I do not have a Bluetooth keyboard for my i-devices, but if that is all I am missing to make some app work, a trip to the apple store could be worked out. Any ideas would be appreciated. Re: [Blind-Computing] My difficulty with drop box
The easiest way to do this is to create a folder you want to share in either the drop box folder on the desktop or my drop box folder in the documents folder. Once the folder is created go into applications and enter on the drop box sub menu and then enter on create folder. You will be brought to the site where you can log in if need be and enter an address you want to share the folder with and it will send a request to the person or persons. You can also paste a file or files in the public folder and then hit applications and follow the instructions I gave to get to the drop box sub menu and enter on copy to public link. You can paste this into a message or email. Remember doing it this way, at least if you have a free account I think, if too many people download from it you will be suspended for a time. Hope this helps. The public folder at least. -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Janet Sent: Monday, August 29, 2011 7:59 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: [Blind-Computing] My difficulty with droopbox Hi folks, Haven't figured out how to share folders, nor find then on the dropbox site. [Blind-Computing] using jaws for sighted
It can be done. Realistically though that is what the insert f4 command is for. Also Jaws reads internet pages sideways as it were left to right. I do know it can be changed to be more like up and down but it has been a long time since I knew how to or bothered to. -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Don Marang Sent: Thursday, July 07, 2011 12:46 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] startup menue in W7 I don't understand how anybody with sight can realistically use JAWS. Just choose one with a keyboard that is easy to use for the blind. I have a Toshiba netbook which runs around $300. The keyboard is very well laid out and the function keys, arrow keys, etc. are very easy to find because of their spacing and occasional tactile dots. [PT] If you do require Braille, the Pacmate is a great device. I used this at work for many years. The virtue of having a Braille display is that you can readily take notes, refer to your own notes and documents, etc. while at a meeting and not disturb others with distracting speech or other noises. The other advantage of the Pacmate is that it is compatible with all of the Office applications that you are likely running on your PC - It has mobile versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc. It is also easy to keep documents, calendars, mail, etc. synced between the Pacmate and a Windows PC. I use the PacMate Braille display to follow my show notes when recording our weekly, half hour radio program / podcast on living with low vision (see www.viewpoints.torpey.info for more info and links to the podcast). One other advantage of the Pacmate's Braille display is that it can be disconnected from the Pacmate and connected to your desktop or other PC to be used as a Braille display for that computer. Finally, before making a final decision, you might want to check out the new PDA / Braille display which the National Braille Press plans to release later this year. Their main goal was to make Braille displays more affordable, so I'm sure it will have an attractive price point compared to some other Braille PDA's. Hope that helps. --Pete Check out ViewPoints A weekly, half hour radio program for people living with low vision Find out more about the show and links to the podcasts at: www.ViewPoints.torpey.info Send suggestions or comments to: viewpoi...@torpey.info For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

We really appreciate it! We are sorry for the inconvenience! We have been reported for such problem about a couple of users before and we know that there is a incompatibility issue with the screen readers. The reason is because we use a specific user library interface and for the moment Revo Uninstaller is not fully compatible with screen readers. We will look how to improve the accessibility on Revo Uninstaller and screen readers in the future versions of the program. There are many screen readers available, but my primary one is a free, open-source product called NVDA www.nvda-project.org The uninstaller portion of the program works very well. I can navigate through the list of programs and uninstall them, accessing all of the dialogs. My problem with it is that the other functions are almost impossible to access via the keyboard, such as the tools button, Hunter mode, etc. Once the tools panel is activated there is no way to navigate through the options using the keyboard unless I am missing something. Could you implement a menu system using standard menu or list controls which would then allow screen reader users to fully utilize this program? Thanks so much for all of your work. Hello Steve. There should be a switch on the laptop that you have to move to turn on wireless. This is so you can switch it off when flying i think. Re: [Blind-Computing] optimising/speeding up an older computer system, especially at bootup
Look in ms config. Go into run and type ms config. Control tab to start up and eliminate things you don't want to start. Be careful though as there are things like sys tray that you need to start up. When you are done it will ask you to reboot and then when it does check don't show this at start up and hit ok and you should be good to go. Recently I've noticed that my Acer machine, an old workhorse from 2007 running Windows XP and Jaws 11.0, , takes a really long time to boot up. I can expect to wait about three minutes for this process to happen, and that seems quite unnecessary. I'd like to keep this thing going for as long as possible, and I've managed to eliminate a number of unnecessary processes, services, etc, and recently with the help of CCleaner removed a bunch of junk from my system which seems to have resulted in an appreciable increase in speed. The bootup process still seems to take an age, though, and it's a little frustrating to me that I can't see what's going on at bootup to determine what might be making it so sluggish. My work machine is also running XP, isn't much newer than this system, has a bunch of network drive/connections to establish and yet still boots in thirty seconds or less. I know there's a step by step bootup option you can enable so that you can see each step in the boot process as it happens and select whether you want to run this or that process, but that doesn't do me a lot of good as Jaws is always one of the last things to run. So, is there any way of making a bootlog that has the same information which I can read in a textfile? How about any tweaks or suggestions users here might have? I've found a number of useful sites, including process libraries that explain the function of various system and non-essential processes that might load at startup, but I'm wondering if anybody here might have any useful info to pass along. In addition to increasing bootup speed, I'm also keen on ways I might be able to decrease the general load on my CPU to make the system run a little more smoothly. I am certainly aware of the need to do defragmentations on the hard drive, but maybe the one that comes with Windows isn't the best solution out there? I've heard this from other folks, but I have no idea what programme i ought to use for this as I've always used the native Windows defrag. How about msconfig? I know many people don't use it, preferring a third party alternative...what of folks on the list here? Thanks! Hello David. Jaws will run fine on the machine. She does not need to copy the authorization. All she needs to do is either contact fs to get her authorization code. She can also go up to the fs website and there is a section for checking authorizations. She can then generate one if she doesn't know hers. All she will need is her unlock coe and serial number. This can be found on the cd or in the about jaws dialogue box on a computer she already has authorized. If you need further explanation feel free to email me at mcare...@att.net and I can explain more clearly. That is probably the same code I was referring to grin. I keep a text with mine in it and it is 20 digits long. When I authorize I just copy and paste that into the appropriate field and I am off and running. The only thing I miss about the old style is that when you take off and auth it vanishes and you have to call fs for a refill. Unfortunately, Matt isn't quite on target with this. The only way to effectively set up different accounts with Outlook is in the Control Panel. The key word is Mail and that will take you directly to the various accounts in Outlook unless you have another program which has been designated as your primary e-mail tool. As matt had indicated, it looks like you can set them up directly in Outlook but they don't work for some odd reason. You have to set up each account individually. there's almost always one called Outlook of course. Now here's a very important point. When you are setting up these accounts, there is a check box indicating that you want to be prompted for which account to use. If you are using Verizon as I am, there is a setting in the additional options section which has to be checked as well. That one indicates that authentification is required. Once you have successfully set up these accounts, you will have the option of creating separate folders, contact lists and so on for each individual account. From the advanced boot options menu that appears, you will need to go to the safe mode option with your arrow keys, and press enter. After your computer boots into safe mode, try removing the program. There may be a better solution, but as I am not familiar with the Avast software, this is the only solution I can think of at this time. [Blind-Computing] question about emails when switching accounts
Hello all. Me and my wife are moving. She uses outlook express on a win xp machine. I was thinking of just switching the information for her account from her Comcast to her attt.net one so she could keep her emails she has saved. Would this work or is there a better way to save her emails so she can access them later? For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [Blind-Computing] Creating and Managing Playlist in Winampusing Jaws
An easier way to clear the playlist is just to hit control n. Also make sure you do not accidentally get into the main win amp window as it will take out all the other songs and just have the one you just opened. -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Scorpio Forever Sent: Monday, April 18, 2011 3:44 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Creating and Managing Playlist in Winampusing Jaws Hi, Yes, but one needs to save the playlist, lest the last playlist be overwritten by the new one. Or, even worse, the new playlist gets added to the previous one, this would especially happen if you used the include in Winamp option in your applications menu. You can ideally use the keystroke of control+S to save the playlist as an M3U file, which you can name and position in the ensuing dialog box, which, I'm assuming you know how to play with. Just remember, and I can't remember the keystroke to at someone else gave on how to do this, but, if you're going to create a second playlist, control+tab to the playlist window, press control+A to highlight all the tracks in the playlist, and press the delete key to clear the playlist. At that point, one would press the letter L to add files to the playlist as one requires. I'm glad you got things working for you. Re: [Blind-Computing] moving jaws from one computer to another;
Do you still want to keep it on the desktop? You can install it to both. If you remove the authorization from the desktop the key vanishes. You have 3 like people have said. If there is too many renewals your account will be red flagged though. Trust me I had some issues with a laptop that kept crashing and almost wasn't able to get keys I needed. -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Dan Mccurley Sent: Saturday, April 16, 2011 8:07 AM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: [Blind-Computing] moving jaws from one computer to another; Is it possible for me to move jaws from my desk/top to a lap/top and if so, how is it done. Hello there. Here are 2 tips to also help with that ind depth and helpful tutorial. To clear out a playlist even faster just be on the playlist editor and hit control n for new. It will remove all tracks. Secondly you can move files around with the combination of alt and either up or down arrow. Also never, unless you really want a random selection hit control shift r. it is a randomizer and can easily be hit by accident when using the control shift t for time remaining. -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Scorpio Forever Sent: Friday, March 18, 2011 3:34 PM To: blind Computing Subject: [Blind-Computing] Creating and Managing Playlist in Winamp using Jaws I wrote this tutorial up some time ago for someone else, and, given the currently circulating thread of Winamp playlists, I thought I would post it. Hope people get a use out of it. ***Begin Tutorial*** Believe it or not, it's easier to create a playlist with Winamp, than it sounds. First, go to your desktop, or where ever you keep the Winamp shortcut, and enter on it. Once the Winamp window opens, control+tab twice to get to the playlist editor. If you find that you've used the control+tab keystroke twice, and Jaws didn't say playlist editor, then that means you have the playlist editor closed. You can open it in one of two ways. You can press the keystroke of alt+E, or you can press alt+F, then arrow down to playlist editor and enter on it. I think you'll find the alt+E keystroke is easier. Smile. In any case, once Jaws reports that the playlist editor is opened, control+tab up to the playlist editor. Now, this is going to sound weird, but go with me on this. Once you land in the playlist editor, press control+A to highlight everything, then press delete. Don't worry if Jaws doesn't say anything, what you've essentially done is delete any tracks that were in there from the last time you used Winamp to listen to something. Unfortunately, Winamp likes to leave residual ghost images of files it's played in the last instance, and so, in order to create a clean playlist, you have to delete what was previously there. So, now that you've done that, press the letter L for lists, and this will open up an open dialog box. Those of you familiar with downloading from send space, or saving as and the like, will be familiar with this dialog box. When this dialog box opens, you'll land on the filename edit box. Do a shift+tab to go to the file list window just above the filename edit box. Now, depending on where you last took Winamp, you won't know where you'll be in the file list, so a good rule of thumb is to press the backspace key seven or eight times until Jaws stops talking. When he does, do a say line command with insert+up arrow, and Jaws should read out, Not Selected My Documents. This means you're on your desktop, and you can now go to the folder where the files are that you want to play. So, if the files are in a folder three levels deep into your my documents folder, let's call it Thea's audio files, you would press the spacebar to select My Documents, press the enter key to go into that folder, then arrow or find the folder titled Thea's Personal Files, highlight it, then press enter. Once in that folder, find the next folder, called Thea in Hawaii, enter on it, and finally go to Thea's audio files, and press enter. Be careful here, you don't want to make a common mistake that everyone makes, even me before I realized it, smile, do not touch any of the arrow keys, or the spacebar key, or anything on your keyboard until you've done a select all with control+A, and I'll explain later. Once you've done the control+A, tab to the open button in the dialog box, and press the spacebar to allow Winamp to place all the files you just selected into the playlist. There is an even easier way to create a playlist, if you aren't selective about what it is you're wanting to play, in other words, if you're not actually trying to create a playlist for a party, or just want some music playing in the background while you're cleaning house, or a book playing while you're knitting or something like that, you can just go to your desktop, without opening Winamp, navigate to the folder where the music files are that you wish to play, now, this could be a music album, or an audio book of some kind, and highlight it without going into the folder. Once you do this, press your applications key, which is generally the first key to the left of the right control key (*keep in mind your keyboard configuration my be different from other configurations*), and arrow down to Play in Winamp, or
Re: [Blind-Computing] muting jaws
You can either go into ms config and tell jaws not to start up. You can also go into setting with insert j if your running from sys tray or alt on the jaws window if not. Go into settings then basic. Just uncheck where it says to start jaws automatically. -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Yvonne Oliver Sent: Monday, March 14, 2011 1:18 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] muting jaws Hello rick That sounds worth trying but how do I do this Yvonne -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Rick Justice Sent: 14 March 2011 09:16 To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] muting jaws Hi Yvonne, Muting Jaws as you are speaking of,does not appear to me to have any benefit. I tried the sleep mode thing on my computer let me tell you, it was a major pain! You have both programs yakking at you at the same time. The biggest pain is that you still have to use the NVDA pass through keystroke to get to the Jaws configuration manager. Personally what I do is, if I am going to run NVDA is unload Jaws first then, start NVDA but, there are times I have had to start NVDA while Jaws is also running and, that is where it's nice to know the pass through keystroke for NVDA, to get Jaws shut down while NVDA is running. I have used the sleep mode option in the past with other self voicing programs but, I don't like using it with NBDA. This is my personal preference and I am by no means suggesting that my way, is the way others should do this. Re: [Blind-Computing] question about MSN messenger
Hello Mark and all. Mark you will want to downgrade to an earlier version of wlm. Say version 14. Something. I can get it to you if you need it.After installing it just exit it from the system ttray. Then go to my computer local c drive program files and into windows live. Find msnmgr.exe and go into properties for it. Control tab and check run as and in the drop box menu tell it as win 2000. This will disable the upgrading and it works better. Would be better if you at least had jaws 10 but it may work. You may even have to go earlier than the one I said. -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mark Mansworth Sent: Sunday, February 20, 2011 5:43 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] question about MSN messenger Hi, I regularly use Live messenger, Im system, using Jaws 9.
