Hi! My motherboard doesn't have an onboard video card. Thanks for the
suggestion, though.

Missy, did you ensure that the onboard video card is still disabled?
This can become enabled sometimes while disabling and / or replacing an
add in video card.

Hi! Bios and software such as cpuz recognize my full 4 GB of memory, so
I'm
99% definite it isn't a hardware issue. The 2.5 GB is reported when I do

properties under my computer; the whole problem is that I'm pretty
definite
it reported 3 GB before the video card change. I thought I made that
clear
in my original message, but maybe I didn't. Although the tech attributes

this change to Service Pack 3, I'm more inclined to believe that the
video
card is responsible for the change. Also, I suppose it could be that
although windows only tells me there's 2.5 gb, maybe it actually is
making
use of more behind the scenes.
Anyway, thank you very much for your response, it is extremely
appreciated.

Hi Missy,

How did you confirm that RAM size when you checked it?

Was it during boot up and you saw the RAM counter count out the memory
on
your system, or did you go through a program on your computer?

If you go to the My Computer icon on your desktop, then press alt+enter
to
get to the properties, the system properties will pop up.

You'll have to use your virtual cursor or mouse simulation keys, and
since
I
don't know which screen reader you're using, or magnifier, I can't
advise
you on what keystroke will give you these functions.

Suffice it to say, if you arrow down the information, it will give you
your
processor speed and memory amount in that dialog box.

Let us know what it says there, and we'll see if there really is
anything
wrong with your memory.

Secondly, some video cards use, not only onboard memory on the video
card
for it's use, if it finds it needs more, it will share the memory with
the
RAM on your computer, so it could be that you're video card is
misappropriating some of that memory for itself.

Another possibility is the fact that he may have shorted out one of the
sockets, or fried one of your memory chips, in which case, the only way
to
diagnose this is to swap it out for another memory chip and see if it
gets
recognized.

Either way, we'll have to get more information.

Re: [Blind-Computing] how much memory will windows xp actually recognize?

2008-09-04 Thread Missy Hoppe
Weird! Thank you very much! Maybe I'll get a different tech, this time a
friend who will look at it for free or for a meal out, to double check on
it. If you or anyone else has tips on how to force windows to recognize it,
that would be very much appreciated. If not, hopefully my friend will know
something this other tech didn't, or I'll just blame it on the extra memory
on the video card and try to move on with life.

[Blind-Computing] changing video cards

2008-08-01 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi! I'm pretty sure this has been discussed more than once, but can't
remember any answers that may have been given, so I'll throw the question
out to you all and see what happens. (smile.)
For reasons too stupid and complicated to go into right now, I'm planning
to change the video card in my computer some time over the next couple of
months. Are there any considerations i will need to take into account for
JFW, or will it just reinstall its video manager thingy after the video
card swap. Basicly, I'd be swapping out 1 nvidea dx-10 card for a different
model.
Thanks in advance for any advice you may have, and I hope that everyone is
having a really great day!
Missy

Re: [Blind-Computing] Computer slowed down drastically

2008-07-09 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi! This might be a long shot, but I had a similar problem with my new
computer about a year ago. If you have a creative sound card, you might
check for a program called dllml. It slows everything down a lot, and from
what I understand, Creative has done away with it now. Anyway, as soon as I
got rid of that, my computer started working beautifully again. If this
doesn't apply to your situation, I'm sorry, but it's the only suggestion I
could think of. Good luck getting it fixed!

Hi! You might find it easier to add videos you like to your bookmarks list.
That's the way I do it when there are videos I want to watch over again but
don't have the time/energy to actually save their files. Good luck, and I
hope this helps.

desktops without using a third party software. I am currently getting used
to how to do that. In the meantime, I have been going into the file menu
and choosing save as, and then saving the video as a web archive single
file. This puts it in my documents. This obviously is not the actual video,
but just serves as a quick link for me back to the video. The problem I
have noticed is as follows. I can watch the video a few times. If I later
come back to it, youtube gives a message saying "this video is no longer
available". At first, I just thought it had been deleted for some reason,
and so didn't think more of it. However, if I go into history in Internet
explorer, I can find the video no problem, and it plays fine. I can then
resave it through the file menu and it is back in my documents. However,
some of the videos will play, while others might give the "unavailable"
message again. However, like I said, if I go into the history again, I can
play the videos fine.
I know I will save myself some grief, when I learn how to download youtube
videos onto my desktop. I was just wondering, if there is a reason why they
will always play if selected from the history, but seem to expire when
chosen from my documents?
I hope this all makes sense
thanks Jason

Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG or Avast?

2008-06-14 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi! I've just rejoined the list, so haven't been able to follow this
conversation as much as I'd like. Is avast better than avg 8.0? I just
downloaded avast, but haven't tried it yet cause on the hole, AVG seems to
have served me well. What are the major differences between the two? Sorry
if this was already discussed, but I can't help being curious. Thanks for
your time, and I hope that everyone is having a great day!

Hi, this is what I can't say. I believe that Avast, including the free
edition, provides more protection than the free edition of AVG, which I
know we're not discussing, but I can only compare Avast from AVG and the
other way round, but not Avast versus EAcceleration or the other way round,
sorry.

Re: [Blind-Computing] About wireless speakers

2007-08-06 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi! I'll try to get someone to tell me the manufacturer name of my speaker.
it's a really generic brand, but as I said, it works great. The speaker
itself runs on 4 C batteries, and the transmitter can either run on the
provided AC adapter or on AA batteries; I don't remember how many batteries
the transmitter takes because I'm using it with an adapter right now. Next
time I have a sighted friend around, I will try to remember to get the
brand name for you. I found the speaker on Ebay, and could try to search
for it again if you want. I paid $80 for mine, which included shipping.

Re: [Blind-Computing] About wireless speakers

2007-08-06 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi! I just got a wireless speaker that might be of interest. It uses the
900 MHZ band, and even though I have a cordless phone that also uses that
band, there hasn't been any real interference. I'm not sure of the
manufacturer of the speaker I have, but it's weather resistant, and has
really good sound. Both the speaker and it's transmitter are capable of
running on batteries, so it's probably the most portable sollution you're
ever going to find. I hope this helps a little, and that you're having a
great day.

[Blind-Computing] Problem installing Openbook 7.02 update

2007-07-02 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hello, all. I apologize in advance if some of you already received this
message on the blindtech list, but I wanted to send my question to as many
appropriate lists as I could think of in hopes of finding someone that can
help me resolve this issue.
Now that I've got my new computer up and running, I decided to install my
openbook 7.0 CD. I had no problem with the install,
but when I tried applying the Openbook 7.02 update, I received the
following error message.

Cannot Install Update
The version information for the current version of OpenBook could not be
found. Setup will now abort.
OK

I downloaded the 367 MB update file from Freedom Scientific's web site, so
am not sure why it wouldn't install. I remember having this same error
occur on my old computer system, but I never actively pursued getting the
issue resolved when I first encountered it. Now that I've got my new
computer and the Officejet 6200 scanner, though, I would really like to
have openbook available to use, and I would really like to update to
version 7.02, because I remember from back when I was still running under
Windows 98 that that version was significantly more responsive than plain
old version 7.0. Is there a documented bug that won't allow the update to
install under windows xp?
I wrote to Freedom Scientific about this as well, but thought it couldn't
hurt to post to this list as someone may have encountered this problem and
found a way around it. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have,
and I hope that everyone is having a really great day!
Missy

Re: [Blind-Computing] MOTHER BOARDS

2007-06-17 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi! I'm using an Abit motherboard, the quad GT, and although I've only had
it for a week, it seems to be doing fairly well. Abit also just came out
with another board, the ip35 pro, which is an ATX board with 3 PCI slots
and support for Intel's newest processors. A small part of me wishes that I
would have known the new board was coming out so soon; I would have put off
my computer purchase for 1 more month. Anyway, the quad GT seems to be a
good board; I simply can't imagine how the motherboard is in any direct way
responsible for any of the minor JFW focus and sluggishness issues I'm
experienceing with my new system.
I know you were asking about Asus boards, but I just wanted to share about
the Abit board because it seems to be a really good choice so far.
