Ivonne. Here is a link that will answer absolutely all of your new user
questions:
http://www.nvda-project.org/wiki/Documentation

Take some time to listen to this:
http://media.libsyn.com/media/bct/bct1398NVDADemo.mp3

By the way, it took me about 30 seconds to gather this information using
Google. I've never used NVDA but still successfully answered all of these
easily answered questions via simple searches.

but what about installation is there a straight install for example self
extracting exe files or do i have to get it installed another way
once this is answered i should then be able to go and download it from one

No you don't ever need to do that
just open the program you wish to speak to you like jaws and then when
you

desire the other provided you have a hot key for it
shut jaws down and use the hot key for your other speech to start.
For instance I use jaws 11 to help others with this same so I open jaws
11

and then use the insert f4 to shut down this jaws. now I use the hot key
for jaws 12 and boom it is there. then I shut down jaws 12 and use
control

alt s and use system access as well. never shutting down my computer once

thank you for replies
to save clutter of traffic i will answer both now
1 n v d a, you have a point there so i shall go ahead and install n d v .
a then if disaster strikes with jaws like you said i will still have a
screen reader and of course i can always delete it if not to my liking.
but if it takes no room at all and does no harm while not in use then i
may
as well leave it there.
i do pose one question though when i restart my computer will jaws still
be
the default reader?
and how do i switch from one to the other and back again.
do i have to restart the computer each time for example restart once to
get
jaws restart again to get n d b a and restart a third time to get back to
jaws?

2 sticky keys
i thought that was what it was but needed to make sure first of all
hopefully it is not too slow
i only really want it for use on skype talking 9 for such things as
preference changes reading of voicemail and things like changing mood
text

and online status
so no real need to be extra fast there
thank you for your help

Once you install NVDA, it's a good idea to keep it as a backup in case
JAWS crashes. This way, if you ever lose speech, you can just press the
hot key for NVDA to launch it so that you can determine the problem.
Also, NVDA is useful for navigating web sites that JAWS may have trouble
with. You can always uninstall NVDA if you don't like it.

2011-01-04 Thread Janie Degenshein

It is a separate software so you invoke whichever one you want.
For instance, I have Jaws 11 and Jaws 12 and system access and magic and
zoomtext all on my computer as I teach beginning users of different types of
software to fit their desires.

Just choose the one you want to use and open that one
Hope this helps

I normally just download/make use of portable version, which you literally
just extract to where you want to run it from, and then you don't even need
to uninstall it as such - just delete the folder later on.

This is also the version that will generally run quite happily off of a
flash drive on most windows computers.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Text to speech software?

2011-01-04 Thread Gerald Levy

Yes, JAWS will still be your default screen reader when you turn on your
computer. To switchc from JAWS to NVDA, just unload JAWS with Insert-F4 and
launch NVDA using a hot key like Alt-Control-N. Of course you can create a
desktop icon for NVDA so that you can go into its Properties dialog to
create such a hot key. When you want to switch back to JAWS from NVDA,
press Insert-Q to close NVDA and press Alt-Control J to relaunch JAWS. I do
this all the time. Sometimes,if I can't get JAWS to launch with speech, I
use NVDA to access the Start menu so that I can restart my computer and
restore JAWS to normal.

No you don't ever need to do that
just open the program you wish to speak to you like jaws and then when you
desire the other provided you have a hot key for it

shut jaws down and use the hot key for your other speech to start.
For instance I use jaws 11 to help others with this same so I open jaws 11
and then use the insert f4 to shut down this jaws. now I use the hot key for
jaws 12 and boom it is there. then I shut down jaws 12 and use control alt s
and use system access as well. never shutting down my computer once

Installing NVDA is pretty straightforward. Once NVDA has been downloaded
and saved, the set-up and installation are self-voicing, which means that
you can unload JAWS. Before you do anything, I suggest listening to a very
good audio tutorial on installing and using NVDA that is a few years old but
still useful. You can find it at:

2011-01-04 Thread Jacob Kruger
Oh, yes, and not too relevant to all, but another reason I use NVDA for some
things is it's built in/easy to make use of support for some other
languages, since while I can tell jaws to create other speech profiles,
making use of some of the eSpeak voices, for example, it just doesn't seem
as stable, so often enough, when I want to do something like quickly scan
some content in a language like Afrikaans, I just switch over to NVDA,
switch it to that language, and there you go...

hello Gerald
thank you for replies
to save clutter of traffic i will answer both now
1 n v d a, you have a point there so i shall go ahead and install n d v
.

a then if disaster strikes with jaws like you said i will still have a
screen reader and of course i can always delete it if not to my liking.
but if it takes no room at all and does no harm while not in use then i
may

as well leave it there.
i do pose one question though when i restart my computer will jaws still
be

the default reader?
and how do i switch from one to the other and back again.
do i have to restart the computer each time for example restart once to
get
jaws restart again to get n d b a and restart a third time to get back
to

This way, if you ever lose speech, you can just press
the hot key for NVDA to launch it so that you can determine the
problem. Also, NVDA is useful for navigating web sites that JAWS may
have trouble with. You can always uninstall NVDA if you don't like it.

No you don't ever need to do that
just open the program you wish to speak to you like jaws and then when you
desire the other provided you have a hot key for it
shut jaws down and use the hot key for your other speech to start.
For instance I use jaws 11 to help others with this same so I open jaws 11
and then use the insert f4 to shut down this jaws. now I use the hot key
for jaws 12 and boom it is there. then I shut down jaws 12 and use control
alt s and use system access as well. never shutting down my computer once

Thanks for this link but I'll review it tomorrow.
I download all files to desk top in folder named downloads
I downloaded the following NVDA files:
Anvda_2010.2_portable.exe
nvda_slave.exe
I entered on the portable file and forgot to unload Jaws. I unload Jaws but
I cannot find NVDA folder in add remove

or
under
C:\program files\nvda...
My quick question before I read all the cdocumentation is the portable only
active until I reboot?
