Short anser is no. If you need to reinstall windows, reformat your PC. I know there more people way geekier than I on here, but since we both aren't hopefuly someone can post how to reformat without sighted help in plane English without being too techie about it. Re: [Blind-Computing] friends, how do you uninstall and reinstall windows without formatting?
Hi Randy, You can reinstall Windows without reformatting the disc. Depending on how you do the install, the disk can or need not be formatted as part of the installation procedure. You did not say what version of Windows you are running and for example, XP can be installed with an answer file which is basically a script containing your settings and product key etc. Vista is a bit different and I'll let someone else get into that as I ran it for a while and then decided to wait for Windows7. If it's XP you're dealing with you can Google Windows xp unattended setup and get a lot of great ideas. There are also zip files on some of the blindness-related sites with all the info you need. There might even be something on the Jaws page on the domain which hosts this list. Re: [Blind-Computing] friends, how do you uninstall and reinstall windows without formatting?
It depends on the version of Windows you're reinstalling. I know you can do a clean install of Windows inside Windows itself as of Vista, but not sure about XP. In any case, your old Windows files will be backed up and will be stored in a folder called windows.old, found on the root of the system partition, for example c:\windows.old. This folder cannot be used to attempt to boot to the old Windows since the boot record has been modified to load the fresh copy. Hope this helps. -- Chris Hallsworth e-mail: christopher...@googlemail.com MSN: ch9...@hotmail.com Skype: chrishallsworth7266 Klango: chrishallsworth Yahoo! Randy, Have you done a "Disk Defrag" lately? It just may be that each of the DBX files where messages are stored in Outlook Express are severely defragmented; especially if you are not cleaning your "Deleted" folder. ---*---*---*---*---*---*--- Holland's Person, Bill E-Mail: billgal...@centurytel.net - Anonymous (from my source of goofy stuff) - Eggs and Bacon for Breakfast - An entire day commitment for a Hen. - A Lifetime Commitment for a Hog For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [Blind-Computing] friends, how do you uninstall and reinstall windows without formatting?
Hi Randy, Below are 2 different ways of repairing Outlook express. Read through them both to see which way will be best suited for you. Reinstalling OE Windows XP here is a means of repairing/re-installing OE in Windows XP. Repairing Outlook Express NOTE: You must be logged on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group in order to perform this procedure. To re-install OE: 1. Hold down the Windows key and type R for run. 2. Type the following line exactly and click "OK". %systemroot%\inf 3. Locate the file MSOE50.inf . 4. Press applications-key and then enter on Install . This will reinstall the files that Outlook Express needs to proceed normally. 5. Insert the Win MX CD into your CD ROM when asked. Or, here is another way. ok; I hope these instructions are a little more clear, and user friendly. 1, type; windows-key+r=run. 2, In the run dialog box type the following; %systemroot% \inf press enter. 3, now, a list of files will appear on your screen; you need to type quickly; M S O you should see/hear; msoe50.inf now, you can verify that this file is highlighted by routing jaws to pc=insert+minus, on the numpad. 4, now that the file; msoe50.inf is highlighted, you need to press, the, applications key, down-arrow, until you hear, install. Note; when you press the applications key, you will be on, open-button, down arrow once, you should hear, Install-i hear you press the enter key. now, you will need to follow the prompts. note; after pressing enter on the install, please, wait until you receive some notification from jaws. you do not want to interrupt the process. I hope this helps. Take care. You get the % symbol by pressing shift and the 5 key on the number row. However a tip when running complex commands from the run dialogue box is to copy the command from the email and paste it . This eliminates the risk of mistyping the string. Simply select the command in the email by holding the shift key and cursoring over the command string. Then either press control c to copy or press the application key and select copy. Now go to run dialogue as described and either press control v to paste in the command or press application key and select paste. Press enter after pasting the results and you should be away. Re: [Blind-Computing] friends, how do you uninstall and reinstall windows without formatting?
Hi David. Thanks for the heads up on that key stroke. Since I hardly ever use that key stroke, I didn't remember it from my old typing days when I first was learning how too type. - Original Message - From: "David Griffith" To: Sent: Tuesday, September 01, 2009 2:07 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] friends, how do you uninstall and reinstall windows without formatting? You get the % symbol by pressing shift and the 5 key on the number row. However a tip when running complex commands from the run dialogue box is to copy the command from the email and paste it . This eliminates the risk of mistyping the string. Simply select the command in the email by holding the shift key and cursoring over the command string. Then either press control c to copy or press the application key and select copy. Now go to run dialogue as described and either press control v to paste in the command or press application key and select paste. Press enter after pasting the results and you should be away.
