Is that in XP or Win7? Now make a hot key shortcut to that icon and that'd be pretty cool :). Brad On 12/1/2011 04:39 PM David said... Re: [Blind-Computing] Sleep mode
Is this a desktop computer or a laptop? ? I am not familiar with Dell model numbers. I had a Dell computer at work and unfortunately when it did this we discovered it was the mother board. Check with Dell and see if there is a warintee for your mother board as many were recalled in the past including the one I was using at work. Re: [Blind-Computing] Sleep mode
I hope you are right, don't get my aditude wrong with my last message. On Sun, 7 Dec 2008 22:41:53 -0500, you wrote: Hello Joan, I'm a bit confused when you say that the computer is turned off when it goes into sleep mode. It sounds like you're placing your computer on stand by, then, after 30 minutes or so, the computer goes directly into hibernate status. This is the default reaction for a computer that is just sitting there doing nothing, unless you turn this feature off in the power options. First and foremost, are you saying that if you come back to the computer within the 30 minutes, you simply have to press a key on the computer, and the computer will come alive again? If this is the case, then you are most definitely not turning your computer off, you are placing the computer in stand by mode, which means that it uses less power than if it was fully turned off, and places everything you were doing in a temporary folder so that you can access it quickly when you come back to it. I don't know whether you wanted your computer to do this or not, but if you didn't, I'll give instructions on how to turn it off below. If you did want it to be like this, then you have nothing more to do, in which case, you simply have to turn off the hibernate mode on your computer, and that will be in the explanation below also. At this point, I need you to detail how exactly you're turning the computer on and off. What I mean is, do you go into the start menu, select turn off computer... and arrow down to turn computer off or what ever, or do you simply press and hold the power button until it turns off? Or, do you simply tap the power button and let it go, then the computer shuts down? The reason I ask is because the computer will do certain things, if set that way, when you close the lid of your computer, or when you press the power button. You can essentially set it to stand by, hibernate, shut down, or do nothing. This goes for both the lid of the computer and the power button. both these items can be set to those four scenarios. To get there, I'll explain in my message on how to turn off the hibernation mode in the next paragraph. So, to turn off hibernation mode, and set the computer to never sleep or something like that, first you have to open up the power options in your control panel. Since you've previously done this, I won't mention it here for room's sake. Once the dialog box is open, you should land on the combo box that outlines your choices for the power scheme you wish to use. I believe you want always on, so arrow up or down to that choice and you're done with this tab. You will need to go to three tabs over, so press control+tab three times until you reach the advanced tab. In this tab, you'll find the options for what your computer should do when you shut the lid and press the power button. As a rule, all my computers are set to do nothing when I do these two things, as I prefer to have full control of my equipment. Either way, you can set it to what ever you wish. Your options are: Do nothing; stand by; hibernate; In the case of the power button, you have two additional options, those being to ask me what to do and to fully shut down. Like I said, I usually tell it to do nothing, that way I can set it to what ever I want to do so that I inadvertently don't close the lid of my computer when I've got a download running all night or something like that. Either way, it's up to your personal preferences. Once you've selected your options for this tab, move once to the next tab with control+tab, and you should land on the hibernation page. If hibernation is turned on, you'll find the check box on this page to be checked, with the phrase being, Enable hibernation. If you should wish to turn off hibernation mode, simply press the spacebar to uncheck the box and that's it. Once you've done this, tab down to apply, then shift+tab back to the ok button, and you'll have full control of your computer again. If you need any other help, let me know and I'll try to answer your questions, if any. Hi Nancy, In your control panel, under Power options, you'll see a series of combo boxes with numbers and the word never. Tab to the combo box that says system stand by and make sure the combo boxes say never. You should also control+tab to the hibernate page, and make sure the checkbox for enabling hibernation mode is unchecked, and that should keep your computer from powering down without you knowing it. tab to the apply button, followed by the ok button and you're good to go. Once you've done that, control+tab over to the hibernate tab, and make sure that the checkbox that says enable hibernation is not checked. Once you've done all these steps, tab down to the apply button, press the spacebar, then shift+tab back to the ok button and press the spacebar again. AT this point, you'll be good to go. Re: [Blind-Computing] sleep mode or something.
Hi David, Go into your control panel, then highlight the Power Options and press enter. You'll land on the power schemes page. tab down and highlight the always on selection. tab down to modify these scheme, such as when the computer should shut off the hard disk, the monitor and the sleep mode. If you don't want it to do any of these things, arrow down to the option that says never for each of the devices. You will, or should, rather, encounter two versions of each of the devices. The first option is for when it's working with AC power, and the second option is for when the computer is using battery power. Not sure if this is the case for a desktop, but you'll find that out in short order.
Hi David, If you follow what Victor has already said, you should be okay, however, you may want to take a look at this as well. While in the power options, go to the advanced tab, and make sure this checkbox is unchecked. Re: [Blind-Computing] Sleep not showing in the shut down dialog inVista Ultimate?
Hi The first question that springs to mind is, are you using a laptop. If so then if you are on battery power I don't think the sleep option would be there. Instead you have the hibernation option which is less power hungry. Again if it's a laptop try powering it using your AC adaptor and see if the sleep option appears. If however you are using a desktop system then I don't know what the problem might be. Listers, I just upgraded to vista ultimate from XP pro. Now in Vista Home premium, I have in the shut down dialog, both sleep and hybernation, but in Vista ultimate, only hybernation shows up in the shut down dialog box. Now I believe this is wrong. reason being, this copy of vista ultimate is a reinstalled copy. I was having some problems and HP had me to reinstall the entire program. But, with the other copy that was on the computer before, I thought for sure that sleep was an item in the shut down dialog box. So will those of you that will, check your shut down dialog box and let me know if there's a sleep item there? If there is a sleep item there, I think I need to reinstall the OS again. By the way, even in the power manigement there's a sleep area but only hybernation is there, that too, makes me think something went wrong in the reinstalling.
