 Dear Robert:
I have never seen an air-conditioner that small. You might have
 someone
check again on the B. T. U. rating. A thousand watt unit would be
 possible,
but such a low B. T. U. rating would do well to air-condition a dog house.
A ten thousand B. T. U. window unit is a common size.
A good permanent instillation would involve filling in the space on
 each
side of the unit, preferably with material that is insulating. A lot of
heat can escape in winter, if these side spaces are not attended to
 properly.

Well, our unit is a 1000 BTU unit. I think it will fit our window, which
 is
in the kitchen. I plan to build a brace outside, angling from two 2 by 6
support posts with a flat 2 by 4 cross section on top. I think the window
may be a little wider than the air conditioner, in which case I will cut
some lengths of lumber to brace the window and keep out the critters. I
 have
a swamp cooler in the hall which will, I hope, aid in air circulation.
 I'll
keep the list updated as to how the installation goes.

 Dear Robert:
You will need to do some measuring before you buy and install a window
air-conditioner. There are different size units and needless to say,
 there
are different size windows. I once owned a unit that was narrow but tall
and it was designed to go in to those windows that crank out side to
 side.
Since you probably don't wish to change windows, it would be prudent
 to
measure your window with the bottom section raised to the max, and that
 way
you will know the maximum size of the unit that will fit in the whole.
 Most
window units come with an expandable, but flimsy, pull-out filler which
 will
prevent critters and air from entering beside the unit, once it is
 installed.
Another concern which you should have is the weight of the unit and
 the
ability of the window to support that load. Large units can weigh a lot
 and
when you get in to the 24 to 30 thousand B. T. U. units, the weight can
 be
 a
problem for sure. Some units come with supports which brace from the
outside to prevent the unit from simply tumbling out the window.
One other issue should be investigated before buying and installing a
unit, and that is the available electric power. Larger units in the U.
 S.
are mostly 220 volt, while small one room units are generally 110 volt
units. Check the area around your window to ascertain where the required
voltage is available, and if need be, have a new plug installed to power
 the
 new unit.
Having installed more than one of these units, I would suggest that
 you
enlist the help of a person who has enough strength to handle the size
 unit
you plan to install. Some of these units weigh more than a hundred
 pounds
and given their size, they are tough for one person to handle, no matter
 how
 strong that person may be.

Clifford Wilson

I didn't get a response last time, so I'll try again. What's the easiest
 way
to install a window air conditioner? Do you just stick it in the frame,
 plug
it in, turn it on, and get cool? Or what?

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Hooking Up an Ice Maker

2006-08-06 Thread Cy Selfridge
Ray,
I would take issue with a couple of statements in this article.
If you are replacing your frig and the old one had an ice maker please
replace the plastic line before you connect it. That plastic line is very
cheap and this wold avoid the possibility of having to replace it late
Saturday evening when most of the hardware stores are close. (LOL)
If the line is copper just check for crimps before reconnecting it.
I prefer the plastic as it is much easier to work with - but - if rodents
are a possibility then I would use the copper line.
One additional comment is that it is nearly impossible to replace the
compression fitting on a plastic line. Most of them tend to swell just a
little making it very hard to get the new compression fitting on the line.
Oh yes, it probably would be a very good idea to turn off the water before
installing a T or saddle valve on the water line. (LOL)

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Hooking Up an Ice Maker

Hi
Even if your refrigerator comes with an automatic icemaker, you will need to
connect it to a water supply for it to make ice. While this is not a
particularly difficult job, it requires some knowledge of plumbing and the
use of tools.

Steps:
1.
Read the instruction manual that came with your refrigerator. Specific
instructions for hooking up the icemaker may be included.

2.
Locate the pipe nearest the icemaker that carries cold water. Most often,
this is the cold water pipe that connects to the kitchen sink.

3.
Install a t-valve in the main cold water line - not on the 3/8-inch faucet
tubes - so that there are two outlets: one to the sink and one to the
icemaker supply line.

4.
Turn off the water.

5.
Put a sleeve and compression nut over the line that will supply the icemaker
in order to tightly connect it to the water line.

6.
Turn the water back on, and, holding the end of the tubing in the sink or
over a bucket, flush the line to remove any debris. Turn the water off
again.

7.
Snake the line from the water source to the icemaker connection, drilling
holes in the backs of cabinets if you have to in order to push the line
through.

8.
Find the icemaker inlet from the refrigerator and attach the other end of
the line using another compression nut.

9.
Turn the water back on.

10.
Throw away the first few containers of ice to be sure the line is completely
clean before you use the ice.

Tips:

If your old refrigerator had an icemaker and you are purchasing a new
refrigerator, use the old tubing to connect it to the icemaker if it is
still in good condition.

Leave several feet of extra line so that you can move the refrigerator or
the icemaker for cleaning.

You can buy kits that contain all of the materials necessary for hooking up
an icemaker. Ask at your hardware supply store.

If you don't feel you're up to the task, a plumber can hook up the icemaker
for you.

I wonder if one might do one end at random, then, using a

Bad idea I guess as any sighted person looking at the result

I can imagine wanting to do this if pulling long runs of cable

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Accessible OBD-II unit

2006-08-06 Thread Trouble
All I can say about the gas is its not always what the pump says.
Before I lost sight. I got the privilege of working in a gas station
that moved lots of gas. At that time it was a Sohio named station
witch turned BP. Some nights I was the hang around guy. Witch meant I
waited for a after hours drop of gas, and this I do know all stations
do it! Now depending on how much the truck has to what tank is low
the most. Because when they get these drops its always a tank full or
almost full. Still the same the gas goes in no matter if its low test
to high, tank gets filled. Now your more company ran stations don't
do this as much, but do it still. The problem we had at the station
was we moved so much gas. That it didn't matter what pump said all
pumps had same gas just different prices. Now some station are better
at keeping same in tank as comes out, but like the one I was at gas
was gas. Oh and they call these boot leg drops. Just ask your station
manager, and if he coughs, ignores you or laughs. You know they are
getting drops for sure.

Not sure about them, but do know they got accessible software for laptops.
All you need is connections for type of car. The software ain't cheap by no
means, and have thought about getting it, but not doing those kind of
repairs anymore.
On some cars if you take the keys and turn them all the way on then back to
accessories position. The car starts to beep a code out. This code can be
found in manual for what beeps mean.
But if your car is shaking at stops. You might want to check the type of gas
cheap crap will do this, or maybe timing. As far as spark plugs go. As long
as they are rated for the car in use they are just fine. Remember with some
name is all your buying.

[BlindHandyMan] home remodeling ideas

2006-08-06 Thread Shawn Keen
So many good ideas and not enough time to enact them.

I live in this old 1940's built home with a detached garage. It's a single
story with an attic. well take that back it has an attic but I'd like to put
some floors in up there.

Here's what it looks like. You pull the trap door down in the hall and
unfold the stairs. when you get up there you have a floored area
of about 8 by 8. The rest of it is the beams and insalation that feels like
cotten balls.
there is a fairly high sealing in there. Someone over 6 foot would have
real issues but I can stand up strate in most of it.

First things first would be to put in a floor. Crawling from beam to beam
isn't all that fun. What kind of wood will I need. do you do something like
this in slats or in large peaces? How thick should I go? Do I just leave
the insalation where it is and seal it up?

I hadn't got far enough in to it to know what I am going to do with it other
than storage. The wife thinks it could be large enough to be another room.
Putting in stairs would be one heck of a nightmare I imagine but I'm no
where near that yet.

Just wanted to pick your brains and see what I am getting myself into.

Dan you should move down here, There's a house for-sale next door! Just
kidding!

Yes even though I can see colors I don't always get them correct the first time

thank Ray for doing the research that I asked him to do. This may come in handy
down the line, in fact I'm sure it will. I'm also going to post it up on the
files page along with many of the other articles that have come across here as

disposal or not. If there isn't would you please correct that over site as
well? Thanks for all the hard work you put in to this venture we have going.
Also Tom if you could come up with another alternative to the techniques
displayed in this article pertaining to network patch cables please post them
as well. Information is good so the more the better.

It depends on how much work you are up to. If there is a area of the house
where you could cut a hole in the ceiling between the ceiling joists,
without running into wires or other things, I would floor it with 3/4 4x8.
If not, than the expensive tongue and groove is the other choice.

the insalation where it is and seal it up?

I hadn't got far enough in to it to know what I am going to do with it
other
than storage. The wife thinks it could be large enough to be another
room.
Putting in stairs would be one heck of a nightmare I imagine but I'm no
 where near that yet.

Just wanted to pick your brains and see what I am getting myself into.

Dan you should move down here, There's a house for-sale next door! Just
 kidding!

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Accessible OBD-II unit

2006-08-06 Thread Dale Leavens
I don't know anything about that Trouble but I can tell you that I used to
live near a Petro Can refinery at Taylor near Fort St. John in BC and we
used to see tankers with all labels, Esso, Shell and of course Petro Can
filling up at the same loading docks. If, in fact there are additives as all
of the advertising would have us believe the driver must keep them under his
seat because it all begins from the same refinery.

The software ain't cheap by
no
means, and have thought about getting it, but not doing those kind of
repairs anymore.
On some cars if you take the keys and turn them all the way on then back
to
accessories position. The car starts to beep a code out. This code can be
found in manual for what beeps mean.
But if your car is shaking at stops. You might want to check the type of
gas
cheap crap will do this, or maybe timing. As far as spark plugs go. As
long
as they are rated for the car in use they are just fine. Remember with
some
name is all your buying.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] How to Make a Network Patch Cable

2006-08-06 Thread rj
Not Ray, but here goes.

One attach the drain basket that come with the disposal by taking a thin
ring of plumber putty and applying it to the bottom of the lip of the drain
basket. Insert the basket in the sink hole. Put the paper ring first. Rubber
ring on second. Metal ring on third around the threads and than tighten the
large nut to the drain basket. You can attach the electric cable to the
disposal before installing it to the drain basket now or wait until you
install the disposal to the drain basket. I like installing these before
installing the disposal to the sink. Now hold the disposal unit as level as
possible and press it in place to the drain basket and turn the latch ring
on to the lugs of the disposal making sure the drain hole of the disposal is
facing the right way for your drain. Attach the drain pipe that comes with
the disposal to the disposal. It is usually held in place with a clamp that
fits over the flange of the pipe by tightening the bolt.
If it is a single bowl sink, just hook up the trap to this pipe and connect
the load line to the power switch and you are done.

If it is a double bowl sink, you will need a y or tee so you can put in a
second trap for the disposal and having a trap for the sink drain.

I wonder if one might do one end at random, then, using a

Bad idea I guess as any sighted person looking at the result
would see the colors were wrong.

I can imagine wanting to do this if pulling long runs of cable

I'll ask our network admin guy if he knows of any other options

Re: [BlindHandyMan] home remodeling ideas

2006-08-06 Thread Dale Leavens
The joists then are probably on 24 inch centers. Depending a little on how
many partitions are under, 2 by 8 should be quite good.

Commonly the sub floor is made of tongue and grooved 5/8th plywood which
comes in 4 by 8 foot sheets. I doubt you will be able to get them through
the trap door. You may be able to buy planks of ship which has a rabbet
along the edges which you nail through to the joist overlapping each piece.
You may even be able to buy tongue groove. Traditionally such planks are
nailed down diagonally across the joists.

If you are going to live in the space then you will either want to bring
heat into it or remove the insulation to permit heat to rise into the space.
You will then want to keep that heat from contacting the under side of the
roof decking unless you live in a moderate climate. Because there is an air
conditioner I am guessing you will want to insulate against heat on the roof
from heating that space, either way you will need to maintain air
circulation under the roof decking. You can leave the insulation over the
ceiling for it's sound properties and if you are just using the space for
storage then it won't matter much.

You may like to bring some more electricity up there, lots of people like to
run a radio shack from their attic or model trains, things like that.

Have fun!

 Okay, I had another look.

What do they have for a floor up there now?
 a board that's probably about 3 foot wide and 8 feet long. that's a
 guestament.
the beams up there are 2 by 8.
Only the space just beyond the ladder and too the air conditioning unit is
 covered right now.

Generally you wouldn't be able to get sheets of plywood up through the
 trap
door so you will need to use plank construction. One trouble though is
nailing, the joists are probably only 2 by 4 and not rigid enough,
 hammering
and moving about particularly over wider spans like a living room will
probably cause movement and cracks in the ceiling plaster or screws or
 nails
 to pop.

Just guessing but I think the beams up there are about 3 feet apart. I
didn't look at all of them but the ones around the opening were.

You could screw or use a power nailer.

Oh for-sure, . grin screws all the way.

Guess I'll be making a trip to home depot next weekend. I just want to
 get
a surface to walk on in place then I can tackle the rest of it.

[BlindHandyMan] Garbage disposal

2006-08-06 Thread rj
Here is a article that is more indepht,
RJ

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=howTop=Improve/garbdispo.html

Replacing a garbage disposer is easier than you think.

Install a Garbage Disposer

Skill Level:
Advanced

Installing a garbage disposer is a relatively easy project for an
intermediate do-it-yourselfer. All you need are a few basic tools (and a
little bit of
patience) to get started. Lowe's is happy to provide this information as a
service
to you.

If you intend to install one where there was none previously, it will
require installing a switch and running electrical power to the unit. You
can do this
yourself if you are confident in your wiring ability and are familiar with
local codes. If not, have an electrician run the wire for you before or
after
you install the unit. A new installation will also require that your sink
have a full-size drain opening.

When working with electricity always:
List of 7 items
1. Turn off the power.
2. Test the wires to ensure the power is off.
3. Lock the panel box, so no one can accidentally turn the power back on
while you are working.
4. Check with local authorities to see if a permit is required.
5. Have your work checked by an inspector.
6. Wear eye goggles and a dust mask.
7. To avoid overloading the circuit, consult a licensed electrician.
list end

If you have a two-bowl sink, remove the drain lines that connect the two
bowls. Remove the strainer from the bowl to which you will be attaching the
disposer.
Then remove the strainer body which forms the rim to which the drain line
was attached. Once complete, you will be left with a simple hole in the
bottom
of the sink bowl.

Roll plumbers putty between your hands to form a snake, then run it around
the base of the disposer flange included with the unit. Place the flange in
the drain hole, seating it firmly.

Install the gasket and upper and lower mounting rings on the flange. Then,
snap the retaining ring in place. Tighten the three screws on the lower
mounting
ring until the flange is firmly seated. Most of the plumber's putty will
have squeezed from around the top of the flange at this point. Trim the
putty
and clean the sink.

Attach the disposer unit to the flange according to the manufacturer's
directions. (Some are attached using a mounting ring. Others are attached
with bolts.)

Using the included washer or gasket, attach the discharge tube to the
discharge opening in the side of the unit. If a dishwasher is to be attached
to the
unit, knock out the plug inside the dishwasher nipple with a screwdriver.
Clamp the dishwasher discharge tube in place on the nipple.

Install the drain lines. If you have a two-bowl sink, both bowls can be
routed through a single P-trap by running the discharge tube from the
disposer to
a T in the drain line above the trap. (See the illustration)

Electrical Service

Ideally, the disposer should have its own circuit. If this is impossible or
impractical, and you already have a dishwasher in place, you may be able to
tie into the dishwasher circuit.

The switch necessary to operate the unit is a simple single-pole switch,
wired as illustrated in the accompanying graphic. The white wires are tied
together
with an appropriate wire nut, as are the bare ground wires. The black wires
are each attached to a terminal on the switch-the incoming wire is attached
to the bottom terminal, and the wire which travels to the disposer unit is
attached to the top terminal.

If you are using an existing switched circuit, or if you've had an
electrician install one for you, the electrical connections necessary to
install the
disposal are minimal. At the disposal, remove the plate that covers the
electrical connections for the unit. Using a appropriate wire nut, connect
the
white wire from the disposer unit to the white wire from the switch. Do the
same with the black wires, then connect the bare ground wire from the switch
to the ground connector on the disposer. Replace the cover plate.

OK,

Now what about this switch and outlet? Are these already existing or are
they something you want to add?

My stares comes down the middle of the bacement and it is on one of the
sides I want to build the wall. I will have access to under them through
 the
utility room on the other side of the room.

 Thanks.

 Hi Jim,

This will probably turn out to be a bigger job than you expect just
 because
it is small. It will use pretty well all of the usual frame building
techniques but not so much that you can be efficient with it.

Now I want to know if this wall is down the open side of the stairs and if
so, do you wish to access the space under the stairs?

Your description is good but I want to be sure I understand the task
 fully.
It sounds like there is an existing light switch and electrical outlet
 which

leads me to think that the construction is against an already existing
 wall.

Maybe you are talking of installing a light switch and plug in the new
 wall?

Hope I can be helpful to you.

 Hi,

I would like to put up or finish putting up my wall in the basement and I
 am
not sure the best way for me to accomplish the task myself.

 Description
Finish putting up a few studs and drywall to complete a wall along my
 basement stairs.

 Details
This wall is just studs along one of the sides of my stairs and stops
 about
4 feet from the adjoining wall. I would want to wall this in too so I
 would
have to lay a board on the floor too.
There is one plug-in and maybe a light switch I would have to cut out.
 So I'm guessing
2 by 4s for studs and floor
 Nales
2 by 4 for the floor with either glue and or liquid nales
 Hammer and saw

 So now for direction?

I like to hopefully do this myself *chuckle*

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Removing Deck Screws

2006-08-06 Thread Dale Leavens
The screws probably have some rust on them sticking them firmly to the wood
which is why you can't move them. You may be able to grab some with a good
pair of channel lock or vice grip type plyer and work them out if they do
not break off. My suggestion would be to turn maybe an eighth of an rotation
first out then in a few times to see if you can break them loose.

If you cannot get a firm grip of the head, and usually the screw driver
won't let you then could try one of those easy out tools where you drill a
hole into the center of the screw then bang a hard steel tap into the hole
and try extracting the screw with a wrench.

You might also have success with a percussion tool either the sort where you
put the driver onto the screw and bang down with a hammer or, you can by
electric and of course pneumatic drivers, the sort mechanics use in the
garage.

You are likely to break several off. I would be tempted to remove the
offending screws if possible and replace them either with stainless nails
which can be smacked down any time you need to tighten them up or stainless
screws, particularly if the boards are likely to twist. Twisting boards
though are likely to just pull themselves apart if fixed firmly enough by
screw.

Hope this gives you a few ideas.

You might be able to work a drop of oil along side a screw, probably
something like linseed oil to minimize any staining. Don't know if it would
help but might work along the threads and make it a little easier to move at
least some of the screws. You might want to dip the replacements in a little
oil too before putting them in although over the years it probably wouldn't
matter much.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Removing Deck Screws

 Hi all,

Several years ago, some friends and I added a deck to the back of my
home. The deck floor is made of pressure treated 2X6's and the deck
structure is made of 4X4's and 2X10's. The whole mess is held
together with 4-inch deck screws and an assortment of nuts, bolts and
washers. Over time the wood has shrunk and some of the screwheads
are protruding above the deck floor. I've tried to screw them in but
to no avail. I then tried to unscrew them thinking I could back them
out and then screw them in again. Still no luck. Anyone got any
ideas of what to do to get the screws in or out? Any help greatly
 appreciated.

 Take care,
 Ed Przybylek

[BlindHandyMan] I'm a pack-rat!

2006-08-06 Thread Barry Levine

Hi Folks,

I'm just writing this out of frustration with myself.
My workshop, which is as old as the house... Twenty years, is filled with
the detritus of projects going back those twenty years, and I can't seem to
get myself to throw anything away! What's wrong with me? I need a
twelve-step program... Pack-rats anonymous.
Hello, my name is Barry Levine... And I keep workshop crap!

I have scraps of odd-shaped wood which are good for nothing, except the
fireplace.
I have specialty nuts, bolts and various other fastening hardware which, if
they ever had a purpose, I've long since forgotten what it is. But, of
course, you never know when you're going to need a specialty fastener for
something which, currently, doesn't exist.
I have old power tools which no longer work.
I have table-saw blades with broken teeth. Anyone in need of a 10 inch
sawblade with broken teeth? Didn't think so.

I have scraps of PVC... Again, good for nothing.
I have old Christmas tree lights which found their way to my workshop a
decade ago because they weren't working. They're still not working. Am I
going to bother to fix them? No! So, why do I still have them?
Why do I have allen wrenches which came with something or another, yet I no
longer own the something or another?
Why do I hang on to a handsaw which is hopelessly bowed?
Why do I have spools of speaker wire for speakers which I no longer have?...
Speaker wire that I'll never use again, having long since moved on to other
types of speaker wire? Is it a sin to throw away old speaker wire?
I have an old toybox down there, which one of my kids broke when he was
about 5 years old. He's now twenty-two. And, the toybox wasn't anything
special when we bought it! Though, I suppose it does serve a purpose in
that it is the storage place for a whole bunch of other crap which I'll
never need or use again.
I have an old wooden kitchen chair waiting to be fixed. We replaced that
entire kitchen set about 5 years ago. We got rid of it... Except this
chair... Which, of course, is still sitting down there, waiting for me to
fix.
And the old paint! The paint cans! Paint cans from when the house was
first built! Can you believe it?
And batteries, and battery chargers... From tools which no longer work.
But, you just never know when they might spring back to life, and if I threw
away the batteries, I'd be sunk. So, there they sit... Just waiting for a
purpose in life.

Does anyone know of a cure for this disease?
I'd be forever in your debt!

--Barry

[BlindHandyMan] Replacing Your Printer Cartritge

2006-08-06 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
While cartridge installation varies somewhat between brands and models,
these general instructions apply to most major brands.

Steps:
1.
Purchase an ink cartridge made specifically for your printer.

2.
Turn on your printer and raise the lid or press the cartridge changing
button.

3.
Wait for the cartridge carrier to slide out.

4.
Put your finger behind the ridge on the top front of the old cartridge and
pull it toward you to remove. If you have an Epson printer, lift the
cartridge
holder lid, and the cartridge will pop up for removal.

5.
Carefully remove the tape from the ink opening on the bottom of new
cartridge.

6.
Insert the new cartridge into the cartridge carrier. Make sure the new
cartridge is oriented the same way that the old cartridge had been.

7.
Feel and hear the cartridge click into position. On some models, arrows will
indicate the cartridge is correctly positioned.

8.
If you have an Epson printer, close the cartridge holder lid and press the
cleaning button to charge the cartridge.

9.
Close printer cover.

Tips:

Some printer drivers display step-by-step directions on the computer screen.

If you have a Canon printer, make sure you did not disturb the paper
adjustment lever.

Avoid touching openings, nozzles and electrical contacts on the new
cartridge while installing.

Warnings:

Ink-jet printers will not work without all cartridges in place.

The use of third-party cartridges (not made by your printer's manufacturer)
may result in poor print quality and printer damage.

Refilling cartridges often introduces foreign material into the ink, which
will clog the printer.

Any damage caused by use of third-party cartridges or refills is
specifically excluded from coverage in manufacturers' limited warranties.

Most laser printers deliver thousands of pages before the toner cartridge
runs out of gas. But when those telltale streaked pages start showing up,
it's
time for the old toner-cartridge switcheroo.

Steps:
1.
If your toner cartridge starts to die in the middle of an important job with
no replacement on hand, you can squeeze out a few more good pages by
removing
it and gently rocking it back and forth to redistribute the remaining toner
powder.

2.
Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.

3.
Remove any paper trays.

4.
Open the cover on the printer. If you're not sure how it opens, consult the
manual that came with your printer or the directions packaged with your
replacement
cartridge.

5.
Rest one hand on top of your printer. With the other hand, grasp the toner
cartridge and pull upward until the cartridge unlocks and releases.

6.
Set the cartridge aside and open the bag that contains the replacement
cartridge.

7.
Install the replacement cartridge in the printer, following the instructions
that were packaged with it.

8.
Place the old cartridge in the bag and box that the new one came in so you
can mail it back to the manufacturer for recycling. Many manufacturers will
pay
the postage for returning used cartridges.

9.
If your new toner cartridge starts out printing lightly or unevenly, you can
speed the break-in process by printing a couple of pages of solid black (to
do that, draw a black box in Microsoft Word or another application).

Overall Warnings:

Toner cartridges are sensitive to light, so don't leave a new one sitting in
a pool of sunlight while you make a sandwich.

[BlindHandyMan] pack rat

2006-08-06 Thread clifford
Dear Barry and list members:
Your list of indications that you might have some tendencies in common with
pack rats, is all to familiar. My father grew up in the depression and he
never threw anything away that might some day be repaired or needed for any
type of project. That attitude was passed down to me in tact. I firmly
believe that is the reason my wife now claims that our home is entirely too
small, even though our son has moved out with some of his belongings. We are
still storing his star wars toys, GI Joe, and trains a plenty.
I suspect there is no cure for this condition, especially when a saved bolt
or carter pin finds a home, or that old chair is finally repaired after
twenty-five years of taking up space.

Yours Truly,

Clifford Wilson

Re: [BlindHandyMan] I'm a pack-rat!

2006-08-06 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha everyone,
Step 7: See if you have a Free Cycle list in your area. I am always
amazed at the things that people are looking for. Maybe you can help.

Step 8: Lots of art classes and artists like things such as old wood
and pieces of pipe for creating that perfect piece of whatever art
they make out of it. They don't care if it is ugly and really dirty,
it adds character to the piece. We have an annual Trash Show here at
one of the art galleries. It is the biggest event they hold. People
have to use trash to make everything that is displayed.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] pack rat

2006-08-06 Thread R S Enterprises
I may be wrong. Heavan forbid, but isn't saving stuff part of being a
handyperson. We don't want to be running to the store to get the proper
repair part. I want it on the premises so I can respond quickly to the
emergency repair. Well maybe a little far in explaination but a large
variety of fasteners is just plain necessary, as is the left over paint for
touching up nicks and such. Also needed is a small supply of lumber,
threaded rod, sheetmetal, angle iron for design changes in multiple
projects. Definately needed is toliet repair parts, faucet parts along with
switches, outlets, coverplates and a few spare circuit breakers. You never
know when one of those little pests can go bad at 3 am.
Don't get me wrong I save aluminun cans and sell them off for scrap metal
along with copper wire I have burned the insulation off of and other scrap
metals. You get a little pocket change and dispose of some plain junk. I
have always recycled wood scraps in my garage wood stove, but only the
little pieces. Kind of like drinking, temperance in all things. And a lot
depends on the space you have for storage also. My motto has been, if you
don't have room to store it, then build another addition.
End of sermon, depart in peace.

 Dear Barry and list members:
Your list of indications that you might have some tendencies in common
with pack rats, is all to familiar. My father grew up in the depression and
he never threw anything away that might some day be repaired or needed for
any type of project. That attitude was passed down to me in tact. I firmly
believe that is the reason my wife now claims that our home is entirely too
small, even though our son has moved out with some of his belongings. We
are still storing his star wars toys, GI Joe, and trains a plenty.
I suspect there is no cure for this condition, especially when a saved
bolt or carter pin finds a home, or that old chair is finally repaired after
twenty-five years of taking up space.

 Yours Truly,

 Clifford Wilson

I am a pack rat to end all pack rats. There have been times, very few and far

[BlindHandyMan] How to Replace a Plug

2006-08-06 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
I have sent this out I would like comments on wiring the plug is this
correct what has been said here?
Instead of tossing out a lamp, appliance or extension cord with a damaged
plug, follow these steps to replace the plug.

Steps:
1.
Decide whether you need a two-pronged plug (ungrounded) or a three-pronged
plug (grounded). Replacement plugs can be purchased at hardware stores,
lumberyards
and home-improvement centers. If you have doubts about the exact plug you
need, cut the old one off and take it and a short portion of the cord with
you.

2.
Select a heavy-duty plug; it may cost a little extra, but the plug will last
much longer.

3.
Open up the outside cover of the replacement plug. (Most have a screw or two
that hold them closed, or feature a snap-lock system that can be pried open
with a thin-bladed screwdriver.)

4.
Cut off the old plug, if you haven't done so already. With a wire stripper,
strip each wire in the cord to which you're attaching the new plug with a
wire
stripper. About 1/2 to 3/4 inch of bare wire is all that's needed.

5.
Attach one wire under the screws at the end of each plug prong. If it's a
two-pronged plug, it doesn't matter which wire is hooked to which prong. The
cord
will work either way. If it's a three-wire grounded plug, you'll need to be
sure that the ground wire (with green insulation) is attached to the ground
prong, which is the round prong. The other two can be attached either way.

6.
Put the cover back on and snap or screw it into place. Your cord is ready to
be plugged in.

Tips:

Make sure that no bare wires are touching anything other than the attachment
they're supposed to be touching.

If you have a Freecycle group in your area, you can post on Freecycle and
someone will came and take the stuff away. I have given away several items
out of my garage, and received several items I needed this way. You can do
a search on Freecycle to find out more. It is set up as a yahoo group.
People post things that they want to give away and that they are looking
for, and the list responds privately if someone is interested.

[BlindHandyMan] How to Relight a Gas Water Heater Pilot Light

2006-08-06 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
If you have shut off your water heater for draining or repairs or to
conserve fuel while away on a trip, you must relight the pilot manually.

Steps:
1.
Set the gas-control knob to the Off position and turn the thermostat to its
lowest setting (typically clockwise in both cases). Wait 5 minutes for any
gas
to clear. If after 5 minutes you smell gas, do not proceed. Call the utility
company for immediate service.

2.
Open or remove the outer and inner access covers for the burning chamber
using a wrench or pliers. Use a flashlight to locate the end of the
pilot-light
tube that extends from the gas-control valve into the burning chamber.
Adjust your position so you can comfortably reach this point with a wooden
match
and see what you are doing.

3.
Turn the control knob to the pilot position and immediately hold a match
near the end of the pilot-light tube. Depress and hold the reset button on
the
gas-control valve (see illustration). Remove the match as soon as the pilot
lights, but keep the button depressed for about a minute.
4.
If the pilot does not remain lighted, repeat all these steps. Otherwise,
turn the gas cock on the control valve to the On position, set the
thermostat to
the desired temperature and replace the access panels.

Overall Warnings:

If the control knob does not pop up when you release it, call for immediate
service.

Watch out for sharp sheet-metal edges when lighting the pilot; better yet,
wear work gloves.

Keep your face away from the burning chamber when lighting the pilot,
turning the control knob or adjusting the thermostat.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] installing air conditioner

2006-08-06 Thread spiro
that's the short of it.
beyond that, you want to do a few things.
you neeed to put a level of sorts on it to make sure it will drain
outside.
that may mean raising the front.
You want to make sure that it isn't weighing to heavily on an older or
deteriated window frame.
that may mean puttting boards under the back, or all the way onder from
front to back.
Then lastly you may wish to stop air leaks.
Duct tape, cauk, or other fill may be needed. Especially with placing
boards under the full front to back you'll need these three items to keep
the outside from defeating your conditioned air.

If it's a smal unit, and a strong window and a plum line says the windown
is truly verticle and not pitched inwar, you're probably fine. Put some
wood lengths cut from the top of the window to push down on the top of the
lower sash so that the lower sash can't creep upwrd leaving the entire
weight on the side frame of the AC which may not have a full weight
bearing purchase.

On Fri, 4 Aug 2006, Robert Riddle wrote:

I didn't get a response last time, so I'll try again. What's the easiest way
to install a window air conditioner? Do you just stick it in the frame, plug
it in, turn it on, and get cool? Or what?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Making smooth, straight edges

2006-08-06 Thread spiro
get a palm sander. If the one side is straight, you cut the other with the
tablesaw and even it along your original line with the sander.
But it will be good to not let the table saw take that line away, and put
a line on both faces of the wood so you can keep the work level.
Better, get a belt sander, strap it down on a table blt up and get medium
and fine belts.
Honestly,
zip, zip zip and you have alot oc control over the work.
You can unhitch it and fold the table if you must and it's not a big
investment as it will come in handy.

On Sat, 5 Aug 2006, Ralph Supernaw wrote:

 Hi,

I want to make a cutting board out of scrap strips of cherry and maple.
These pieces are trimmings produced at a cabinet shop when squaring boards
and so they have one straight side and one uneven side.

I have tried using my table saw to trim the uneven side so it will also be
straight. The problem is that I tend to get some blade marks because I am
not pushing them through perfectly smoothly. It may also be because the
throat plate on my table saw is a bit recessed from the surface of the
 table.

How can I remove the blade marks and still keep the side of the boards
straight and smooth? I have a table saw, router, and drill press available
for the task as well as assorted hand tools.

 Thanks,
 Ralph

[BlindHandyMan] Propane Safety

2006-08-06 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
SAFETY NOTICE

For your safety, propane has an odor added so you can detect leaks. You and
each person using or handling propane of your household must know the smell
of propane. Ask for a scratch 'n sniff brochure or MSDS to demonstrate the
odor. If anyone is unable to recognize the odor of propane, call us
immediately.

Propane is heavier than air; therefore, leaks will initially settle to floor
or ground levels. To check for propane, carefully smell in low spots.

Under some of the following conditions, you may not be able to smell a gas
leak.

For example:

. Age, colds, allergies, sinus congestion or the use of tobacco, alcohol or
drugs may diminish your sense of smell.

. Cooking or other strong odors may cover up the smell of gas.

. In certain circumstances, propane gas may lose its distinctive smell this
is called ODORANT FADE'

. Sometimes propane gas can lose its odor if a leak occurs underground or if
there Is rust on the inside of the cylinder or piping.

For those reasons, it is recommended that you purchase arid install propane
and gas detectors according to manufacturer's instructions as a back up
warning
device, If anyone using or handling propane is unable to recognize the odor
of propane, you should not use it until you have purchased and installed gas
detector(s).

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS

1. Put out all smoking materials and other open flames.

2. DO NOT operate a light switch, telephone, cigarette lighter, appliance or
thermo stat. Any spark in the area where propane gas is present may ignite
the gas.

3. Get everyone out of the building immediately.

4. Shutoff the gas supply at the tank or cylinder. (See below)

5. Call a Gas Repair Company - use your neighbor's telephone If gas odor is
in the building.

6. Have your service person locate and repair the leak. Have your service
person air out the area and check and re-light your gas appliances.
Do not return to the building until you are advised that all leaks have been
repaired and it is safe to return.

RELIGHTING YOUR PILOTS

We strongly recommend that for safety reasons you call or qualified
service company to relight pilots. However, if you relight
the pilots yourself:

- Turn all appliance controls and manual shut-off valves to the OFF
position.

- Slowly open the tank shut-off valve.

- Carefully smell for the presence of propane at floor level and in low
spots before attempting to relight the pilots.

- If gas is detected - STOP - See What To Do If You Smell Gas.

- Follow the manufacturers instructions for pilot lighting. If you cannot
find the instructions, do not attempt lighting the pilot.

OTHER IMPORTANT SAFETY RULES

- Don't allow unqualified personnel to service your propane system or
appliance.

- Don't let your system run out of propane.

- Don't enter an area where you suspect a gas leak. If you are in such an
area leave immediately

- Be alert for propane odor when working in areas where propane is used.
Even a faint odor may indicate a hazardous situation.

- Do not try to judge for yourself the level of danger of a gas leak by
trying to determine if the smell of gas is weak or strong. All gas leaks
pose a
serious risk.

- Repeated pilot outages could indicate a hazardous condition. Don't at
tempt relighting the pilot, or service your equipment. Call. another
qualified service company.

- If one of your gas appliances has been flooded, shutoff the gas
immediately at the tank. Do not use your gas system again until the wet or
flooded equipment
has been checked and serviced.

- Improperly vented or defective appliances can cause potentially fatal
carbon monoxide poisoning. Have your propane system and appliances
periodically
inspected by another qualified service company.

- Don't tamper with or use tools to operate controls. If controls are
difficult to operate by hand, call Al Parsch Oil Co. or another qualified
ser vice
company immediately.

- Keep combustible products, like gasoline, kerosene or cleaners in a
separate room from propane appliances. Your appliances pilot lights could
ignite the
fumes from these combustibles.

- Don't operate any gas appliance without reading the instructions care
fully.

CYLINDER SAFETY

1. Contact with the liquid contents of cylinder will cause freeze burns to
the skin.

2. Do not tamper with a cylinder. Keep children away from it at all times.

3. Cylinders must always be stored and used out of doors. Never store
cylinders in any en closed area, garage or building.

4. When not connected for use, keep cylinder valve turned off and for 45 lb.
capacity or less, plug or cap valve outlet. Self contained outdoor cooking
appliances must be used with a cylinder of 20 lb. capacity or less.

5. Do not use, store or transport cylinder where it would be exposed to high
temperatures, such as near a stove, fireplace or other heat source. The
relief
valve may open, allowing a large amount of flammable gas to escape.

6. Keep cylinder

be under done.
I thought of 2x 8 ft halves of ply but crossing that 20x 14 ft above the
livingroom was nearly doomed to crack plaster while I lay out bats of
insolation.
How do we cover this? for material and personal safety?

the beams up there are 2 by 8.

I just want to get
a surface to walk on in place then I can tackle the rest of it.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] How to Replace a Plug

more and more the prongs are differentiated.
If this is important for the manufacturer it should be important for us.
So try this:

Snip through the outside jacket with a blad and peal back an inch of the
outside jacket while the device is unplugged and the plug is still on the
wire.
Then snp and mark the wire that goes to the fatter prong. Tape it off or
put a cable tie on it.
Then continue with the rest; making sure to attach that wire to the fatter
prong in the replacement plug.

5. Do not use, store or transport cylinder where it would be exposed to high
temperatures, such as near a stove,

Plug replacement instructions said in part.

 5.
Attach one wire under the screws at the end of each plug prong. If it's a
two-pronged plug, it doesn't matter which wire is hooked to which prong.

Many two prong plugs used in the US have one prong wider than the other.
These can only be plugged in one way. It certainly does matter which wire

At most home improvement and hardware stores you can get finished shelves in
widths of 8, 10, and 12 inches and lengths of 2, 4, and 6 feet. There are
vertical rails that you screw to the studs and horizontal shelf supports
that lock into the vertical rails at about 2 inch intervals. You can place
multiple shelves end to end and lock the shelf holders into the vertical
rails where ever you want them. These wouldn't hold up bags of sac creet
but they will hold up quite a bit of stuff. It's a pack rat's dream.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] How to Replace a Plug

2006-08-06 Thread Boyce, Ray
Hi Max

I thought it seemed wrong.
The Earth prong out here is flat but wider than the others but this is
on a 15 amp outlet.

Plug replacement instructions said in part.

 5.
Attach one wire under the screws at the end of each plug prong. If
it's a two-pronged plug, it doesn't matter which wire is hooked to
which prong.

Many two prong plugs used in the US have one prong wider than the other.

These can only be plugged in one way. It certainly does matter which
wire goes to which prong of a polarized plug.

Regards.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] How to Replace a Plug

 Hi
I have sent this out I would like comments on wiring the plug is this
correct what has been said here?
Instead of tossing out a lamp, appliance or extension cord with a
damaged
plug, follow these steps to replace the plug.

 Steps:
 1.
Decide whether you need a two-pronged plug (ungrounded) or a
three-pronged
plug (grounded). Replacement plugs can be purchased at hardware
stores,
 lumberyards
and home-improvement centers. If you have doubts about the exact plug
you
need, cut the old one off and take it and a short portion of the cord
with
 you.

 2.
Select a heavy-duty plug; it may cost a little extra, but the plug
will
 last
 much longer.

 3.
Open up the outside cover of the replacement plug. (Most have a screw
or
 two
that hold them closed, or feature a snap-lock system that can be pried

 open
 with a thin-bladed screwdriver.)

 4.
Cut off the old plug, if you haven't done so already. With a wire
 stripper,
strip each wire in the cord to which you're attaching the new plug
with a
 wire
stripper. About 1/2 to 3/4 inch of bare wire is all that's needed.

 5.
Attach one wire under the screws at the end of each plug prong. If
it's a
two-pronged plug, it doesn't matter which wire is hooked to which
prong.
 The
 cord
will work either way. If it's a three-wire grounded plug, you'll need
to
 be
sure that the ground wire (with green insulation) is attached to the
 ground
prong, which is the round prong. The other two can be attached either
way.

 6.
Put the cover back on and snap or screw it into place. Your cord is
ready
 to
 be plugged in.

 Tips:

Make sure that no bare wires are touching anything other than the
 attachment
 they're supposed to be touching.
