Is it for an underground sprinkler system or are you connecting it to a

Hello, list:
Does anyone know of an accessible sprinkler timer which can be set for
automatic operation either tactually or with audio? We have water
restrictions here so any watering is restricted to certain days before 6:00
a.m. All the timers I've seen locally are visual. Thanks for any ideas.

Hi all,

Our old gas powered lawn trimmer decided today that it wanted to meet it's
maker so it died. My wife wants a battery powered trimmer this time so she
doesn't need me to start it for her when she wants to do the lawn. When we
purchased our last lawn mower, she insisted on an electric start mower for
the same reason. I'm beginning to feel a little obsolete. The last battery
powered unit we owned was a real piece of junk. It was underpowered and
needed to be recharged every twenty minutes or so. It had a ni-cad battery
that lasted two or three seasons before it would no longer hold a charge.
Does anyone have a battery operated unit they can recommend? I'm told that
many of the units now run on lithium ion batteries that are much improved
over the old units. I looked at a couple of units but they struck me as
very poorly built and not worth the asking price. Any recommendations would
be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Take care,

You might need some help entering contacts, but after that, some of the

2009-03-11 Thread Jeff Kisecker
Depends on where you live, in the US, you can go to Lowes or any major
hardware store, you can also get timers there as well.

You can also go to http://www.orbitonline.com

An underground one would use the same type of weeping hose that Dale was
speaking of, but would be completely underground, and you would not have to
worry about turning on the hose and such. The hoses would not be laying
around for a person to trip over.

Depending on the size of your garden, it probably wouldn't cost very much to
do. I did my entire yard a few years ago for less than 1200 bucks.

Greetings,

I first off want to thank everyone who has responded so far. I have
several good suggestions to pursue here. I can get a larger
diameter hose, buy seeping hoses and bury them where needed, find
an underground system or get a timer. I have a couple of questions.

I have never heard of an underground system. How do they work,
and how common might they be to find? I am likewise curious about
the timing device that will turn my sprinklers on and off in the
pattern I specify. Frankly I have never even heard of such a timer.
Needless to say, my interest is definitely sparked.

Greetings,

Ok folks, I have a question for which I can find absolutely no
solution. We have just planted our spring vegetable garden, and we
require six sprinklers in order to adequately irrigate it. Well,
when all of the sprinklers are hooked up and the hose turned on,
some of the end sprinklers aren't getting enough water with which
to function. Admittedly, there is a lot of hose, well over a
hundred yards. So naturally there are issues with water pressure.
Turning up the pressure gage on the well pump doesn't seem to help
the matter at all.

Aside from getting a new pump, which I can't afford, is there any
product or appliance I can buy, or any sort of procedure I could
perform that would give me more water pressure in order to irrigate
my garden? Thanks so much in advance.

Bright Blessings,
RiverWind

There is a texture that you can just roll on the walls, you can either have
a rough texture, or a smooth one. It depends on the roller. This will go
over old paint, texture or I would think wallpaper. It is like very thick
paint. We have done it in our house, but I can't think of the name of the
product right now. We bought it in a two 1/2 gallon container.

Good luck!

hi list.
here is my problem as follows.
I have a kitchen and it was wall papered when I moved in. now I do not
like wall paper so I decided to get rid of it, by scraping off the paper.
this of corse was hard and time consuming and I thought about just sheet
rocking the walls of the kitchen that have the wall paper.
I told a friend about this and he told me that I could buy a seeler that
I could put over the walls that have the wall paper. he said this seeler
will make it look like there was no wall paper at all and then all I had
to do after the seeler dryed was paint over it and the walls would look
good again.
my question is, does such a seeler exist is there such a product out
there?
if so can any one let me know?
thanks so much for your time.

It goes on really thick if you want, it takes about a day to fully dry, if
you texture in the morning, you could if necessary, paint later in the day

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Oil lubricated vs oilless compressors

2007-12-05 Thread Jeff Kisecker
I got a new compressor last year for Christmas, it is an oil lubricated one.
It isn't too bad regarding noise, and I haven't noticed any oil getting into
the air. I can smell OIL once in a while when I am emptying the tank, I
choose to empty it and try to be sure to get the water out in the winter
here, it will freeze in the tank if I don't. I haven't had any problem
running it when it is cold, but I haven't used it that much.

Now that Christmas is here again, I am thinking of asking for some air
tools for it. I need a different blow gun than came with it, I would like
to have one that extends or has a longer nozzle so I can use it to get
behind things and to clean my garage floor with it without having to bend
over to get the air close enough to the floor.

Any other ideas?

My son does some air brushing. He has been using one of those little
diaphragm continuous compressors. you can about feel the ;pulses as the
machine works. I thought maybe a compressor might be a welcome Christmas
present.

Now I have a pretty substantial oilless compressor which I don't work all
that hard and I rather appreciate not having to take much care of it. I see
though a lot of oil lubricated compressors and about the only thing they
seem to claim for them is long life but never with any facts or figures.

Do any of you know if and how much better these might be and if any of that
oil becomes atomized into the air stream?

Now air brushing doesn't require a large volume or very high pressure but I
figure a small tank reservoir should deliver more even and predictable
pressure.

Thanks.

I just came in from three hours of shoveling snow. I cleared most of the
patio which is 16 by 45 feet and had snow to my knees over most of it. I
threw it against the house which I usually do for the insulation value,
there is as much snow there now as we had all last winter I am sure.

I cleared most of the snow down the sidewalk along side the house and the
driveway but left enough to make it worth while for Janet to finish up
tomorrow. Besides I was about played out.

I spent much of the afternoon tuning up my dovetail jig. For some reason it
is still not quite right, cutting the joints just a little too tight and I
can't seem to get it quite right. I have 12 drawers to cut and I need them
to be very precise and I am using oak for some and maple for the rest, can't
afford to waste too much of that. throwing all that snow didn't seem to
inspire any revelations either. Usually that sort of heavy work inspires
some insight but not tonight. I had hoped to have that much done before work
tomorrow. Oh well!

I did partially disassemble my drum sander and figured out how to repair the
adjustment mechanism which failed last week causing me to have to adjust it
with a crescent wrench. When it works it works well but somehow it has been
a bit temperamental ever since I got it, just a touch disappointing. It sure
does produce a pile of very fine saw dust though. I have been very
accurately thicknessing several 11 inch wide hardwood boards in pretty rough
condition.

In the summer I usually spread the dust out over the grass in the back lane
just along the back of my fence and water it down to keep it there, it helps
keep weed down but I won't get the gate open now with all that snow. Could
lay it over the ice but then we will be tracking it into the house all
winter.

Hi Phil,

I think Victor was on the right track but in the wrong direction.

When the spring roll is frozen the ice is dense so, like a steel bar heat
moves along from molecule to molecule more rapidly because they are close
together. The more excited each molecule gets the more adjacent molecules it
bumps into thus exciting them. Thus heat absorbed by radiation on the
surface is rapidly transmitted to the deeper levels. As it is conducted
deeper into the roll this continues however the surface layers then begin to
benefit from the additional energy released by the latent heat given off by
the cooling steam generated as the frozen ice in the deeper layers boils and
moves away from the core.

The refrigerated chicken on the other hand just lies there and shivers.
GRIN Although it may have a similar moisture content the molecules aren't
so closely packed as they are in the ice of frozen food. The larger spaces
mean it takes longer and is more difficult to transfer heat from the surface
into the core.

A bit like heating a steel bar compared with heating a pillow.

Anyway I believe that is the physics of it.

Microwave is a little different since it prefers the free moving molecules
of moisture rather than the more tightly linked molecules of ice.Water
molecules can much more freely distort and rotate with the changing magnetic
field of radio frequency radiation and this motion or excitement as the
physicists prefer to call it is more rapidly transferred as they bump into
adjacent molecules as they fly about inside the chicken. Until some of the
ice is melted in the rolls they won't gain heat as rapidly.

Is that close Dan? I expect you have studied some thermo dynamics in your
mirky past?

here is my question. Say I put some frozen egg rolls in said oven and set
the timer for 25 minutes. When I take them out they are thawed, warm and
ready to eat. Remember they were frozen when I started. Now, I put a peace
of left over chicken out of the fridge in the same oven for the same length
of time. Of course the chicken is not frozen so one would think the chicken
would be hot as hell but, it is not. Yes it is sort of warm but not
exceptionally hot. I suppose their is some thermodynamic theorem going on
here and I just don't understand. But then I don't understand Spanish either

as long as the grips retain that angle, you are correct about the nature
of pointing.

On Thu, 7 Jun 2007, William Stephan wrote:

My experience was completely different regarding accuracy. The best
shooting I ever did was with a little .38 Smith with a two inch barrel. I

Presumably, this is because a short barrel mimics finger pointing, which
is
something we all can do. And, most of the time, you're going to be within
ten feet of whoever you're shooting at, this is particularly and hopefully
 true for a blind person.

I'm not sure if this point was made, however, a small semi automatic like,
say, a .38, is not very accurate beyond a range of around 10 feet due to
the
fact that most of them have real short barrels. Your best bet is to get
something like a 9mm glock or a .44, though the latter ones are kind of
hard
to get hold of. Shot guns are not good in home defense weapons. It's like
smashing a butterfly with a hammer. A good 9mm pistol is a much better
defense weapon than a shot gun, for the following reasons. One, loading
time. You have to break open the shot gun, put in the shells, put it back
together, aim, then fire. A process which takes anywhere from 15 to 30
seconds, even a minute if you don't know what you're doing. Two,
maneuvreability. Also contrary to popular belief, it's almost impossible
to
get a good shot off from the hip and hit somebody with any degree of
certainty. That kind of shot only looks good in the movies. You'll also be
doing a lot of collateral , and unnecessary, damage. Yes, shotguns are
really awesome weapons. But they don't belong in the home. Use a shot gun
as
a perimeter defense, not a close range weapon.

 Dear List members:
Shotguns are among the deadliest of weapons at close range, and make no
mistake, a twelve gage with any type of shot will take out a sheetrock
wall
and do damage to a person on the other side.
I live 20 miles from the sheriff's office and I feel that it is necessary
to
keep a firearm around for home defense, in case some person decides to
break
in to our home at night. I am not a marksman, but with seven shots of
double
ought buck shot, I can be assured of covering a rather large area.
One problem which I have found with revolvers is the noise from the blast.
With a short barreled revolver, the crack hurts my ears, and I could not
hear to tell what is taking place after the first shot. With an automatic
pistol and a similar length barrel, the noise is a good deal less and I
for
that reason prefer the Simi-automatic pistols.
A Simi-automatic 22 rifle is also a fairly quiet gun, and they can achieve
 rapid fire with larger clips.
I truly hope to never fire a weapon against anyone, but if the choice is
to
allow someone to break in or to shoot them, then they are toast.
One of the difficulties which we face is trying to anticipate the future,
and to what extent we will all find it necessary to defend our homes. Home
intrusions are becoming more common, and the meth heads are becoming more
brazen. Hopefully, this is a spike in that type of activity, but if it
doubles or triples in the next decade, I will be glad that we acquired
fire
 arms in advance.

 Yours Truly,

 Clifford Wilson

[BlindHandyMan] Foundation build up!

2007-04-26 Thread Jeff Kisecker
Hi:

I am getting a truckload of dirt to build of and to better channel water

thinking that I could simply use landscaping plastic, or should I use
something a little heavier. I am looking at using larger River Rock to do
this.

2007-04-26 Thread Jeff Kisecker
Hi:

Thanks for the feedback:

Answers to your questions:
How far does your overhang extend? some areas about a foot, others where
there is no rain gutter about six or so inches.

What kind of soil does your yard now have? Gumbo and crap. we have really
shitty soil. When it is wet, it sticks to everything, when dry, it is hard as
a rock! It is really sandy to the touch as well, we are in the river
bottom.
How much of a grade are you going to give the new dirt? Good question, Some
areas are likely going to have more of a grade than others do to settling.
How much rain do you get? Well, we are in the midst of a drought, but we
have gotten about 4 1/2 inches of rain this month.

Thanks for the questions! I was thinking of just some landscaping plastic.

[BlindHandyMan] Another question

2007-04-26 Thread Jeff Kisecker
How would I figure the square footage of a triangle?

The dimensions are base 12 ft., and each side is 7 ft. This is another area
that I am going to put rock in as a low spot in our yard. Thanks, Jeff

How many inches of dirt do you have to add? If you are adding several
inches, such as 6 or more, I would not place down the plastic and rock until
the dirt has settled for a few weeks. Then, re-level, making it slope away
from the house and add the plastic and rock. If you don't, you will have
dips and high places in your rock area due to settling. You would only need
the plastic and rock about three feet from the house where the water is
running off. DO NOT place the dirt up on the siding. Keep the dirt
approximately 4 inches from all termite eating materials, such as wood. I
like the idea of the porous plastic material, but don't know how fast it
absorbs. Fill in those low places within 12 feet from the house.

Rick probably has a valid concern about the mold but I would still use the
plastic. The landscaping fabric will get saturated. Use more gravel at the
top of the grade than at the bottom.

[BlindHandyMan] water in basement

2007-04-01 Thread Jeff Kisecker
Hey list:

We have received three inches of rain over the past three days, and more to
come. I have a sump pump, but the dumb ass who put it in when I had my
house built was really stupid and didn't put any drain tile underneath the
concrete floor. Short of cutting up my floor to put some drain tile in, is
there any way I can stop the water from seeping up through the floor?

Thanks for any responses, I have vacuumed about 100 gallons of water over
the past two days.

Thanks again, Jeff

Re: [BlindHandyMan] automatic water sprinkler problem

2007-03-21 Thread Jeff Kisecker
Brice:

When the sprinkler system is cleaned out for the winter, you have
to use an air compressor to force the water out of the lines so
they don't freeze with water in them. If you live somewhere that
doesn't freeze, you wouldn't have to blow the lines out.
Good luck, I agree though, if you replace the valve, it should
fix your problem.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] automatic water sprinkler problem

2007-03-21 Thread Jeff Kisecker
The piece that has the two wires is the solenoid, that is part of the valve.
That entire assembly should come apart. If not, a replacement valve should
only cost $15 to $25.00. That is a very inexpensive way to fix the problem.

Thanks, Jeff

Okay Jeff, that makes sense. No I don't have to blow out my lines, I live
in California. Is the valve the vary top piece that you'd turn to
manually turn it on, the piece that has two wires coming off the cap?

Good evening list,

Many of you know that I sustained a fall on Monday morning March 12 on my
way to work. The front door is in the middle of my house which faces east
and opens onto a concrete block and lockstone sort of pedestal about 20
inches above the front lawn, the lawn slopes down to the street but is
broken by a retaining wall about three and a half feet high with a hedge
behind the top of that wall. I have a series of steps about 30 inches long
which are out about two feet from the front of the house and run down the
front of the house to the north descending below the level of the lawn but
to the level of the driveway which runs east to the avenue. I had just
stepped off of the last step onto the lockstone sidewalk along the side of
the driveway when my right foot shot out and I fell backward. I was aware
that for some reason my right toes just weren't coming up and I felt the
right tibia and fibula crunch.

Over Sunday night we had apparently had some freezing rain that turned to
snow.

Once I arranged my foot sort of I pulled out my cell phone and called the
ambulance, lying on my left side in the snow propping the ankle with my left
toe. I had thought of crawling up the stairs to the house and leaning on the
door bell having locked the door behind me but decided that would only hurt
a lot and I would have to be brought back down anyway.

So I tell the dispatcher my name, where I was laying with a broken leg and
that I would require an ambulance. The joys of these people! How old are
you? what is your date of birth? Are you bleeding? Are you hurt any other
place? Did you bump your head? ...

I finally said Send me a freaking car now! I am laying in the snow in my
driveway and the station isn't a thousand yards from where I am laying then
hung up! Had she stopped to dispatch then come back on maybe I would have
been a little more patient.

Then I telephoned Janet who I thought had probably gone up to the shower,
she threw on some clothes and came out to get my computer just as the
ambulance turned up.

Soon I was in the Emergency Room and I was right, a lower quarter tib fib
fracture. They put on a bit of a back slab after a couple of injections and
I spent the rest of the day and that night in the hospital in Cochrane then
into another ambulance to timmins in the morning where the orthopedic
surgeon confirmed what I had figured, an intramedullary rod through the
length of the tibia to just above the ankle joint then screws run in
laterally just below the knee and just above the ankle. I spent the night in
the timmins Hospital and just before noon it was back into an ambulance and
back to our Cochran Hospital early Wednesday afternoon.

Friday afternoon they came to take a blood sugar. Why? My last one was
high. That can't be, I haven't had a last one, you must have someone else
requiring insulin.

Turns out that the admission urine test showed high sugar and my glucometry
turned out to be 19.

So, it could be that I am now diabetic.

I decided to stay in the hospital a couple of more days partly because I was
a bit bummed out by that news and partly to see how I responded to the
Metformin they gave me since I don't have any means of monitoring that here.

I came home on Monday Afternoon.

I am still a little under the weather! Non-weight bearing for 6 weeks just
on time for our trip to England on April 21st. That is going to be a pretty
dull vacation by the look of it. I will have to go back to Timmins on
Tuesday for the Orthopedic clinic, arranging a ride will be the issue but I
expect in a couple of more days much of the pain should be subsiding
certainly it is a lot better than last week. Loads of people have been very
sympathetic, the staff collection was huge, a massive basket of fruit and
candy and such and my part-time Department assistant brought around the card
with as much change!

Anyway, I have got through most of the e-mail now, I don't like to sit here
at the computer more than a little while at a time just yet. I have selected
out a couple of messages though to respond and suggest to and will probably
start that tomorrow. They are supposed to come over tomorrow to change my
dressings and some dood is to bring a stool so I can sit in my shower rather
than on a plastic milk crate in the bottom of the Jacuzzi as I am presently
doing with a hand hose although that turns out to be working pretty well.

Anyway, here I am, limping back.

Dan, I should be able to do most of the work-up on the router table, don't
have the fence built yet and I probably want to make a couple of different
fences but I can catch up on all the documentation.

Dale Leavens,

RE: [BlindHandyMan] automatic water sprinkler problem

2007-03-20 Thread Jeff Kisecker
The correct term is valve. If you used an air compressor to blow them out
last year, you may have to take the valve apart to see if there are any
broken parts inside. The valve may just screw off like a jar. There are
some rubber washers inside the valve, that the air compressor may have
displaced if too much pressure was used.

What kind of system is it? Is it an Orbit?

IF so, you can go to Orbitonline .com to get information and/or replacement
parts.

http://www.orbitonline.com/

Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] automatic water sprinkler problem

Over the weekend my automatic water sprinkler system malfunctioned. After
going through the cycles, one bank stayed on. So I turned the knob to
manual, and it still wouldn't stop running water in the one bank. So I had
to turn the main water valve off leading to the house. The first time I
turned the main valve back on the water was still running through that one
bank. So I turned it off again, and tapped on the top of the knob for the
bad bank. I heard the solenoid if that's what it's called close. Turned
the water main back open and the water in that bank was no longer running.
Well, it happened again this morning, I had it set to manual where I had to
push a button to start the water through it's cycle. So it does it in both
automatic, and manual setting. So I'm quite sure it's not the automatic
sprinkler system itself, but something in the Knob where you'd turn it on
from outside where all the individual banks are located. How would I remedy
this situation? Please give me the correct terminology for what these parts
are. for instance, the proper name for the knob, the mechanism inside that
opens what ever allows the water to flow etc.

[BlindHandyMan] Dethatching blades

2007-03-15 Thread Jeff Kisecker
Hi:

I am looking at buying a dethatching blade for my lawn more. Has anyone
used one of these, and if so, did it work? I have a lot of thatch in my
yard from last summer, I really want to get rid of it and start over, but I
don't want to rake by hand.

Thanks for your feedback, Jeff and Guide dog Chief

RE: [SPAM] Re: [BlindHandyMan] Lawn Edges Are Put To The Test

I need to buy a manual edger, it has a rubber wheel on it and has a blade
that cuts as you roll it. They work pretty well, I think they are about
$25.00 or so.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Lawn Edges Are Put To The Test

Hi All
Lawn Edgers Are Put to the Test

A well-groomed, head-turning lawn calls for more than just freshly mowed
grass. Attention to detail goes a long way toward a lawn achieving a
great look
over a good look. Using an edger to clean up a lawn's perimeter
enhances its overall appeal and neatness, resulting in garden edges and
footpaths with
a crisp and clean appearance.

An edger is a different tool than a trimmer, although many
modern units do feature interchangeable trimming and edging attachments.
Whereas
a trimmer's cutting ability relies on a rapidly rotating string
positioned at the end of a shaft, edgers typically use a rigid rotating
blade to ensure
a straight, uniform cut. Although a trimmer can be used for edging
applications, the edges tend to look rather scruffy, whereas a dedicated
edging blade
is designed specifically to achieve a beautiful, immaculate appearance.

The first step to edging is thorough inspection of the area
to be edged, removing all sticks, stones, wires or other foreign
objects. Depending
on the edger model, blade height may then need to be adjusted.

Operating an edger is very similar to operating a trimmer. Generally
speaking, position the edger upright and perpendicular to the ground
and, while the
engine is running, pull the throttle trigger to activate blade rotation.
Allow the edger blades to reach maximum speed before lowering the
cutting head
into the lawn. This may take a second or two but will help ensure you
begin with a clean, smooth cut. With the blade at full speed, ease the
cutting head
downward. As the cutting action begins, push the unit slowly forward so
the blade cuts as you walk forward. If the blade jams or stops in the
ground, retract
the blade and begin again.

If cutting on a concrete edge such as a sidewalk or driveway, rest the
guide wheel of the cutting head on the hard edge of the surface you are
cutting against.
The guide wheel, a common feature of most dedicated edgers, helps guide
the edger along the sidewalk, assisting with directional control. As the
edger
is pushed with a slow walk forward, cut a swath that lines the edge of
the sidewalk. If grass growing over the concrete prevents seeing the
edge of the
sidewalk, tilt the edger slightly sideways so the blade tilts and kisses
the concrete edge, acting as a guide.

While edging, many models tend to kick back dirt and grass. A great deal
of this debris often hits the operator's feet and ankles, so it's
advisable to
wear some tough work boots while edging.

A variety of new edgers on the market offer a slew of new
bells and whistles. Some manufacturers offer multiple-use units with the
ability to
operate as both trimmer and edger, or even other lawn tools. In the
past, the drawbacks of some multi-use units have included increased tool
weight and
problems with balancing the edger perpendicular to the ground during
use. If a lot of edging is to be done, it may be wise to invest in a
single-use dedicated
edger for easier handling.

Nevertheless, new edger designs hit the market every year
featuring enhanced maneuverability, greater design efficiency and more.
From the small
end of the equipment spectrum to the heavy-duty end, today's edgers come
in many models to meet an array of needs.

The YardStick

American Gardener's lightweight and compact YardStick cordless electric
trimmer/edger offers 24 volts of rechargeable power. The unit comes with
a wall-mount
charge rack to re-juice between jobs, comfortable grips and an
adjustable handle. As a trimmer the YardStick offers surprisingly
effective cutting power
for an electric tool, efficiently chopping away freestanding grass and
weeds.

This two-in-one system's edging action comes in the form of a tilted
string-trimmer head that doubles as the unit's plastic guide wheel. As
an edger, the
user twists the motor housing, which positions the cutting head
perpendicular to the earth rather than horizontal for trimming. Place
the guide wheel,
which is constructed into the plastic spindle head of the trimmer, along
the edge of a sidewalk and work the cutting string along the edge. For
edging,
this system's use of a string rather than a rigid blade may not be the
most clean-cutting method, but should suffice for small yards and garden

needs. Unlike most edgers, the design of the YardStick

[BlindHandyMan] Air Tools

2007-01-01 Thread Jeff Kisecker
OK folks, as I said last week, I got an air compressor for Christmas. Now,
I need some tools to go along with it.

I did get a spray gun for cleaning stuff off, along with a number of nozzles
for it including a needle for pumping up balls. I also have a tire
inflation attachment as well.

What I am looking to do is buy the most essential tools first. I don't want
to spend a ton of money on these either, as I don't have it.

thanks, Jeff

[BlindHandyMan] Christmas Gifts

The Handyman Santa was busy this holiday season. I got a ProForce 11 gal
3HP oil lubricated air compressor. This will add to my workload, but it
sure is a nice unit. Now if I could find an English only on-line manual,
that would be great!

Take care all, wishing you a happy new year!

You have already received lots of advice to close them in the winter and
open in the summer. A very good modern solution is the thermostatically
controlled vent. You can get them, as they say, at your local home
improvement store. They have a couple of advantages, you don't have to
remember to open or close them and if you get a sudden warm spell in the
winter, as is likely to happen in South Carolina, they will open and then
close again when the weather turns cold.

We live in SC. I have heard different opinions on whether or not you are
suppose to close the vents or leave the vents to the under side of your
house open in the winter. The reason for closing the vents is to keep the
cold air out and this keeps pipes from freezing. Also I have heard you
 are
suppose to leave them open so the under side of your house can get fresh
air. What is every one's opinion on this?

Hello all! I just found out about this list and thought that I would
subscribe and help where I can and maybe get some new ideas from others. My
name is Jay and I am 38 years old with a lot of experience in both home
renovations/landscape construction and automotive. A little history on
myself is that first of all, I lost my sight just about 10 years ago but
before then I worked as a renovator and did landscape construction with my
dads business then left there and was a licensed auto mechanic and race car
builder and driver for 8 years. The last job that I held down just before I
went total was as a building matenance manager for a large medical building.
I have taken most of what I have learned over the years and learned how to
make it all a tactile experience and continue doing what I have always loved
to do and that is to work with my hands. I hope that I can find a spot to
contribute here and also learn some new tricks that I haven't yet or at
least find an easier way.

Jay

RE: [BlindHandyMan] insulation in a crawlspace

2006-10-28 Thread Jeff Kisecker
Dale:

Thanks again, the floor is a dirt floor, I am planning on putting a vapor
barrier over the dirt, when I do the insulation. I have used some of that
spray foam in a can, it expands, but it would take a hell of a lot of that
to accomplish what I need.

Could I use fiberglass insulation and tape it to the 1/2 inch Styrofoam that
is along the concrete walls?

Thanks, Jeff

Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] insulation in a crawlspace

Some depends on the height of the crawl space, if he has to spray from his
hands and knees well I don't think I would do it for $1500. there is air
quality and all sorts.

Is there anything else in there besides plumbing? Sometimes a good answer is
to insulate under the floor wrapping over plumbing to keep it on the warm
side and just let the rest get as cold as it likes. This is not so good if
the furnace or water heater is in there. There is no point though in heating
the area even a little if it is unused.

The first rule is to seal the cracks, these happen where structural members
meet, under the floor and against the sill plate, between the sill and the
sill plate or rim joist however you prefer to call it, where the sill sits
on the foundation. Calking works, spray in foam where spaces are of any size
or even poke rope in there. Stop air moving in and out and you make your
biggest savings.

Carefully cut and fit fiber glass bat insulation along the rim joist fitting
it between the sill and the under side of the floor. It should fill the
space but not be compressed. I cut the stuff by squeezing it along the edge
of a table, usually covered with a sheet of scrap and another over the top
then slice it by sawing with a wavy serrated bread knife, something not too
coarse toothed so it cuts rather than shreds. You cut several squares to fit
between the joists where their ends come up against the rim joist. You could
cut foam sheet but it is very hard to get a good fit still, it does a nice
job if you are patient enough.

Now along the edge of the sill where it meets the foundation you may not
need all that much if the junction is well calked, I might consider a strip
of foam you could screw in place through big broad washers or through a
board of strapping.

If insulating the floor is a good option then screw strapping across the
bottom of the joists then just slip the appropriately sized bats between the
joists. Depending on your area maybe 8 inches or more. You might form a bit
of a frame under plumbing so you can keep it on the warm side of the
insulation. I really like this solution since it keeps floors warm while
preserving the heat to the living space. You can then thoroughly ventilate
the crawl space for even better health and hygiene.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] insulation in a crawlspace

 Hi:

On another note, I am looking at insulating my crawlspace. I had a bid
 from
a guy that sprays foam in, but he wants about $1500.00 to insulate the
 sill
plate, in the crawlspace from the floor joists to the dirt, including over
the top of the existing Styrofoam along the walls.

He was also going to do the basement.from the floor joists to just below
 the
 sill plate.

 Is this high?

I am looking at putting fiberglass insulation between all floor joists, in
the crawlspace, but I need something else for the sill plate. Any ideas?

 Thanks, Jeff

Dale:

I live in South Dakota, it can get pretty damn cold in the crawl space, my
bedroom is over the crawl space. The walls are pored concrete. I believe
the recommendations for R value is up to R25 in a crawlspace. Seems like a
lot to me though, but I have to do something.

Thanks again, have a great weekend!

Thanks much for all your suggestions! You should write a book on this stuff.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Furnace filters

2006-10-25 Thread Jeff Kisecker
The cheep filters it really doesn't matter, but for some of the newer
furnaces they operate more efficiently with a little higher quality filter.
Mine does.

The ones I buy have a material on one side, and a plastic supporting such as
has already been described. They also have a crisscross of either cardboard
or plastic on the same side as the plastic supports. This side goes toward
the furnace fan, the air coming in will have to go through the filter first.

So, there is a specific way to put them in, once you do have them in the
correct way, you can remember when you change them.

Have a good day,

We had a visit from the contractor who does PMs on our heating and cooling
equipment this morning. The technician found nothing wrong, except that the
furnace filter was in the slot backwards. I've always wondered about whether
there was a right or wrong direction to place these, but I can't for the
life of me tell the diffference by feel.

These are just basic one inch filters with a cardboard frame.
Do any of you folks have techniques for determining this?
Thanks.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] blind techniques

2006-10-18 Thread Jeff Kisecker
I too didn't think that Mickey's post was at all offensive, he was just
asking for some additional information and assistance from the blindness
prospective. Every list has to have some controversy once in a while, let
the thread work itself out.

Thanks, Jeff

Hi All,

If I can weigh in here for a minute.

I thought Mickey's post was done well, and I didn't think there was anything
wrong with it.

I just don't think that Mickey was necessarily thinking about the over 200
members on the list, and the fact that some of them, whether it be a small
portion or large portion of our members, have usable sight, such as Don
Shaw, or Boop, and for a time, before I went completely dark, I had some
usable vision, as well, so Ray's posts do have merit, whether they be from a
blind or sighted perspective.

There have been many different opinions on this subject, some agreed with
Mickey, and some did not, in any case, it is not up to a regular member on
the list to decide where the list goes, it is up to the list owner and
moderator.

If you have problems with how the list is being run, or the direction that
it is taking, feel free to write the owner or moderator. I mean, Jesus,
there are, I think, something like four or five moderators, and I'm sure you
get along with, at least, one of them.

Another point is that these problems should be discussed off-list, not on
list.

When the necessary changes are to be implemented, and or if the owner and
moderators feel that a consensus is needed from list members, then the
subject should be broached on-list, otherwise, comments on list practises
and allowances should be kept off-list.

Lastly, there is one suggestion I would have for Ray, and that is, he should
include the original website address with his posts, this serves two
purposes...

First, it allows the reader to check it's legitimacy, and accuracy, and
allows for added ability of the reader to add the website to their
favourites list.

Secondly, it allows for the reader to go onto the website and check out if
there's more stuff the reader might want to glean from it.

I know of such posts that Ray has submitted where the information was, in a
way what I was looking for, but had just the right amount off as to be
useless to me, however, I wanted to go to the website to see if there might
have been an addendum to the article that would've included that subtle
difference that would have adapted the article to suit me.

In any case, these suggestions have allowed the groups that I moderate to
work alright, and I offer these ideas as suggestions for possible
application.

Jeff,

There is a fairly new product made by Rustolium, It is a proxy paint mix
you mix just before you use it. If I remember my wife had three hours to
apply it. You paint a area 4x4 and sprinkle on these small chips for a
sparkle affect. They tell me our basement looks great. You can buy this at
Home-Depot or other places that sales paint. The cost is $49 a gallon for
areas like a basement, or $59 a gallon in heavy traffic areas like a
garage. Had the stuff down for about a year and we love it. We plan on
doing the garage with it next year. The only thing the area you are painting
must be clean.

They sell something they call patio heaters. They come in various forms.
Canadian Tire here sells several designs at various prices, some are quite
attractive. Much as I like the outdoors, I wouldn't be too interested in
sitting around a patio heater except I suppose toward the end of a party
when the few hangers on are at too much risk of puking on your floor to
bring inside.

Robert, I don't know where we saw those incinerators. We saw them in
a google site and looked at them, online.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] lawn aerators

2006-09-01 Thread Jeff Kisecker
The aeration only goes about 1/2 inch into the ground, unless there is a
sprinkler head there that they hit, you shouldn't have any problems.

Dale,
Well, depending on what method they use you can probably say goodbye to
your sprinklers... (LOL)
I had forgotten about the folks who come and take plugs out of the ground.
We had that done once to our yard in Denver and I can not say that it helped
all that much.
Lmy wallet was a little lighter though. (LOL)

Well now it might qualify on both counts, as aeration and compaction.

I have never used the power aerators but I have seen them used. I wouldn't
consider this a good thing for a blind person but a partial might depending
on how partial.

The type I saw pushed a row of tubes into the ground removing plugs nearly
three inches long which it left in rows on the ground. If you can run in
very straight lines then maybe, don't think that bare footed feeling would
be too useful though, they only seem to work running forward.

I read that one should then screed the cores into the low parts of the lawn
and roll if necessary to level off the ground. Apparently bowling greens are
prepared this way in the autumn, they screed with a tool I believe they
refer to it as a mandolin, a sort of triangle at the end of a long stick.

I have been thinking I might hire a lawn service to aerate my lawns this
autumn, I am however a little concerned as I have some garden irrigation
hoses buried not all that deep in a few places. The back though is getting
lumpy and parts aren't taking up water so well. I figure it won't cost a lot
more to hire a man with the machine and he will be not only familiar with it
but more capable than I and will get the job done in much less time than I
would..

Nope, that actually compacts the soil more.

My dad tied a couple of boards to his feet with nails pounded into the
bottoms of them and walked around the lawn. Does that count?

Has anyone here used a lawn aerator? How easy/difficult was it to use?
 Thanks, Mike

Hi Folks,

Does anyone have any experience with making home brewed beer?
I don't believe that the instrumentation is to high-tech, An accessible
hydrometer, Accurate inside thermometer and accurate cooking thermometer
for preparing the Hops. the rest of the stuff is all pretty basic a
large stainless steel kettle, aging crocks and a basic bottling station.
Thanks for any information you can provide.

Regards,

Larry Stansifer
