Hi Jim,

Yes, I have seen the sort which roll out and drain through perforations but
I don't know what they are called. They go on the end of the down spout.
I'll keep a look out for them and let you know if I fine any or at least can
get you a name.

I am not sure how to explain this, but I will try as I am told they are
made, but no place will they be found locally.

It is an end the goes on the end of your rain gutter and causes the watter
to spray or stream out of the rain spout so the water will avoid washing.
Either it kind of rolls out when it rains and water comes out of little
holes or it spins causing the water to mist and spray.

Has anyone any thoughts on this or seen them or better yet where to get
them?

Thank you.

It would probably be pretty difficult to get a board the whole length of the
hill, so I would
suggest using a string. Of course, you would want to keep the string as
close to level as possible.

Use a board and hold it straight and level from the top of the hill, then at
the end of the board measure straight down to the ground.
for every 12 inches in length, a 27 percent grade will drop 3.24 inches.
for every 12 inches in length, the drop will be 1.8 inches for a 15 percent
grade.
I would do this a few places a long your hill just to get an average.

I am thinking about getting one of them robotic lawn mowers, but I have some

It needs to be under 15% grade for one and the other choice needs to be
under 27% grade, so if anyone can help me figure this out it would be

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Air Purifiers

2007-04-04 Thread Jim Ruby
Check out the orec on tv the new units you can demo it for free pending on
the infomercial 60 to 90 days. I tried two of them and liked them, but could
not keep them cause both would of costed around $850.00. It even had
washable filters so you did not have to keep buying new ones. I would watch
for this as many of the air systems make you buy filters and things that go
along with the ionization process as part of the air purification process
and they usually are not cheap from 50 to 150 a year to replace them.

Good luck.

I can not recommend a particular brand but what I believe you are looking
for is a unit that ionizes the air. It puts out ions into the air similar to
if not exactly the same as what happens during a storm and that is why it
smells the fresh air.

It also has the effect of causing unwanted particles of dust and so on to
become heavy and fall to the floor. You may find that for a while things in
the room will become more dusty but that is just because the junk is falling
out of the air. Out side of having to dus a bit more at first, it is a good
thing.
Good luck in your search You may want to do a search

Hi,
On another list this same conversation is going on and here is what one
person reported:

We have both the Ionic Breeze and a unit made and sold by Eden pure from

www.edenpure.com

and the Eden Pure is far superior in my opinion. The model
we have handles up to 3000 square feet so it takes care of our entire home
which is just under 2100 square feet. It is the best air system we have
ever had and it really does what it claims.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] fixing AC adapters and a tip

2007-03-19 Thread Jim Ruby
I am thinking about putting new batteries in my Braillenote, but the funny
thing is that it was working just fine holding a charge until I did the
latest upgrade to the unit, after the upgrade things stopped working ie
holding a charge. So my ponder is, it the batteries or did the upgrade do
something to the charging system? I talked with bn tech support over the
phone several times and they said It was the batteries. Does anyone have
any suggestions? I do not belong to the bn list at this point and time.

The one I have drops the material below the spreader, but I can control the

 Dear Brice:
If your spreader has a spinning device which throws the fertilizer in
 a
pattern which is wider than the
spreader itself, you should be able to spread seed with good results. If
your spreader simply drops fertilize underneath the spreader, I would
 think
you would have a hard time getting a uniform distribution and you would
likely get too much seed in the area covered.

The garage floor has a crack that runs the length of the garage. Near the
back wall, the crack starts as a hairline and as you go to the opening of
the garage, this crack widens to a half inch before narrowing back down.
The crack is about four feet from the outer garage wall and about eight feet
from the other wall. There is no crack on the back wall. The cement
driveway has a multitude of cracks. These cracks have been there for at
least twelve years. Do I have to replace the garage floor?

Jim,

Without getting into details on this list, I'd suggest you check to make
sure your batteries and battery gauge are calibrated. The newer revisions
of the BrailleNote have a feature which drains and calibrates the battery.
That may help. Bring up the user's guide and search for battery.

[BlindHandyMan] ordering cabinets from Menards

2007-01-07 Thread Jim Ruby
Hi,

I have ordered 3 cabnets from menards and a counter top plus everything to
put it all together. It is my understanding all I am going to need to do
is:

1. screw the cabnets together
2. place slats on the top of the cabnets and screw the counter top on to the
slats.

I am told I have to screw the cabnets to the wall, but I do not want to do
this in case I wish to move it at a later date. So my questions:

1. is this something easily done or is there things I have not thought of.
Btw: these are cabnets that will sit on the floor. I see most of my cabnets
in the kitchen are sitting on the wood floor they did not put tile down. Is
it ok to place these cabnets on my tile or will it reck it over time?

2. I have two plugins that will be blocked behind the cabnets I am not sure
how I want to get access to them.

1. cut holes in the counter and back of the cabnet. I'd hate to spill
something then it would be a mess inside the cabnet as well.

2. just running flat heavyduty extention coard the small ones out the sides
of the cabnet or out to the top as behind the cabnet is a half wall and have
them go in to a serge protecter so appliences can be plugged in.

Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] watter in braille note

2006-12-11 Thread Jim Ruby
Yes, you will need to send it in to get it fixed unless you want to take it
apart and se if you can clean it out, but there is probably some damage in
there that will require new parts.

Hi all. I spilled watter on my braille note accidently last thursday. It's
partially working now, but none of the keys work once the unit is on.
Oppions please. Does the unit need to dry out, or should I just send it in
to get it fixed?

Any suggestions would be appriciated.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Cleaning Kitchen Cupboard Door

2006-11-07 Thread Jim Ruby
I have this stuff all on the top of mine do to cooking and would like to get
it cleaned up, but fear what I might try will reck the finish. We do not fry
a lot, but have gas stove and that from what a read it a bit worse then an
electric stove.

You could try Clorox wipes it was suggested on the list, I have not done
that yet. In fact I have not tackled that project yet, but the longer I wait
the worse it will be on me so have to get it soon. Trying to get armed with
info first cause I'm sure it will take some elbow grease.

Hi all,

Yesterday I took it upon myself to go over all the kitchen cupboards
with one of those sprays my wife bought. On the top edge of one of
the doors, I found a sticky substance that feels much like the glue
on the back of a sticky note. I tried rubbing it off with a paper
towel but to no avail. I then dampened a paper towel and tried using
that. Again, no success. Not having much experience with this sort

might do to the wood or finish of the door. Anyone got any ideas or

Try goo gone, you can find this on the aisle with the home cleaning

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Maybe ergent help request

2006-10-29 Thread Jim Ruby
I am almost sure it was in the vent because they move around and I only
heard it scratch behind the wall when the toilet flushed or ran the water in
the sink. And it sounded like actually large scratching not like a rat or
mouse unless it was very large. shivering, at that thought.

I just need to ask if you are sure it is in the vent? I had a mouse
in the wall in my kitchen and thought it was in the stove vent pipe
that goes to the roof. It was just lookin' for a home. Had nothing to
do with the roof. A little snadk of peanot butter on a lovely wooden
slab solved it.

Lol. Ok. Sounds cool when I flush. I'll eat and drink a lot and enjoy the

start backing up well we'll cross that bridge when it is time and if he
does
it will be war on the things that walk across my rough. I'll sit in the

Should make for some added venting and maybe I can put in a sky light if I
get enough leaks.

Thanks.

In spite of what you may have been told or understand, sewer gas is rarely
dangerous. Occasionally some twit dumps something nasty including gasoline,
several years ago a railroad car dribbled gasoline into the storm sewers of
Timmins near here which eventually produced somewhat spectacular explosions
and fountains of flames out of the man hole and grills in the streets and
roads. That notwithstanding, the gas can be unpleasant.

That though isn't a major concern, blocking the drain is probably more
worrying. You probably do have a bird, I think I would be inclined to try
to

flush him on through, there isn't any reasonable way you are likely to
rescue him anyway unless maybe by removing the toilet and perhaps dragging
it out with your hand well gloved and assuming your hand will fit. Mine
just

barely fits into the standard three inch sewer pipe and I am a small man.
He

will bite you if he can so you will want a substantial glove, I doubt your
elbow will make it around the various bends and so on.

There may be a cleaning eye near where the critter is but how likely is
that.

If the creature isn't dying of sewer gas, neither will you.

  Hi,

Today I noticed a bird or something that sounds like he can scratch very
  well behind my toilet.
  What is behind there?
My plumbing vent on the rough. So he must of fell down there.
Now since it is the weekend I can not get no help.

What can I do other then not go to the bathroom or run water in there?
When I do it starts scratching like mad for a little bit.

How likely could he plug that pipe up and cause methane gas or suer gas
to
enter the rome and maybe cause a health problem?

  Thanks.

Maybe I should keep running water or flushing until he scratches himself
  to
death, but can he do damage to the pipe or anything inside there?

  Thanks.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Bugs

Knock on wood I do not have the problem of these so called lady bugs and I
use the ultrasound sound pest controllers so they might be worth a try. On
how to clean keyboards with them I am unsure, don't smash them as they leave
yellow gunk around.

Btw: these so called lady bugs are actually Asian beattles they killed off
the actual lady bugs cause they had no devences to fight off the meaner
ones. I forget why they were brought in to the us or if they just came on
there own hitching a ride from something imported.

Hi up here in Minnesota where we raise a lot of soy beans we have a lot of
these bugs that we genarically call Ladie bugs. Some call them African or
asian beedles. They are a little domed shape bug with a hard shell. They
kind of just look like a little round bump like you would find on the home
row of some key boards. Now that I have described them the best I can.
How do you get rid of the darned things without using chemicals? I remember
some one posting about those plugg in gagetts that put out a frequency.
Does any one know if they work spacifically on lady buggs?

My brother and his wife have one and it works great for flies and spiders
and the like but I don't know about ladie bugs.
Just because it works for one thing does not garentee that it will work for
other things and I just hate to piss away money on some thing that is not
tried and true.
So not to be rude but please no guesses I only want to hear what if any
thing has actually worked consistantly for ladie bugs.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Quartz Infrared Heaters

2006-10-14 Thread Jim Ruby
I have one of these and will have to look up the information on where I got
it from, but it does heat 1000 sqf.
You must have it by an indoor wall not an outside wall and put it on carpet
as on cement the cement will absorb and not let it heat properly so my
instructions said. I used it a little last year and it did great. I have not
used it enough to tell if this will help be cost effective or not.

Hi all,

I've been looking at quartz infrared heaters to help supplement my
home heating this winter. The paticular unit I've been looking at is

square feet. Has anyone had any experience with this type of heater
and if so, what did/do you think of it? Thanks.

Jim I just gave it a go and found your web site very accessible using
my Linux system but a no go for sound. I clicked on option 8 and dead
air space at this time after 2 full minutes. I'll give it a go later.

[BlindHandyMan] Test radio station for cell phones.

2006-09-10 Thread Jim Ruby
I have put up a test radio station that should play on your cell phone using
the S60 Internet Radio application.

If you would like to give it a try please visit blindsea.com and click on
the listen link. You should be able to right click on that link and save it
to your computer and send it to your cell phone to test. If you want to just
listen on the computer that is cool too. My goal here is to see how well the
server will handle the load.

I would like to try and get as many users as I can to see what the station
will max out at.

Thanks.

Jim,

I got several of those sound devices from Home Depot about four years ago,
and was delighted when the mice seemed to vanish within a couple of days.
Then I was disappointed when the mice came back within a few weeks, even
though the sound devices were still in place. I guessed that the little
buggers just learned to put up with the noise. I think that was the same
year that I tried leaving lots of moth balls wherever the mice liked to go.
Stunk up the whole house but didn't phase the mice.

That story about the sound devices reminds me of the time that I went to an
outdoor shooting range. The area between the shooting platform and the
targets was thick with birds and rabbits. They had apparently just learned
to accept the constant blasting of guns and the bullets whizzing over head,
and they didn't flinch at all.

Be careful when you buy the sticky pads. They sell these ones that are
supposed to be for bugs and rodents. They are just little flat pads, and
they work great for catching ants, but they have to be folded in some box
thing to catch mice. Even when folded they do not seem to work very well.
Make sure you get the ones for the size critter you want to catch. We get
 the Tom Cat brand.

I have been learning a lot about them as we have had a lot of trouble with
mice where we live now. I think it is the ongoing construction and
 development in the area.

Why not do this with a continuity tester if you have one? I would rather
hear the beep then enjoy the taste.

I would add, make it a bloody great thick cord.

One way to tell is with a battery if you aren't too squeamish to do the
tongue test. You know which is the ground by the shape of the prong. touch
that against one pole of a 9 volt battery, it need not be a fully charged
new one but must be strong enough to be unambiguously tasted. then touch
your tongue to the other terminal of the battery and in turn each of the
wires from the other end of the cord to your tongue or some mouth part near
by. When you taste the electricity through the cord you have the
ground.Identify it with a piece of tape or tie a knot in it or what ever.
Now remove one of the connections of the original cord and mark or identify
it. Reverse the preceding process only this time you touch the end of the
wire to the battery and taste each of the blades of the original cord until
you identify which one and on which side of the ground prong. You now know
which blade must connect to that terminal, all you have to do is find which
wire that is on the replacement cord by following the same taste procedure
this time touching the appropriate blade of the new cord to the battery and
identifying which wire that represents on the other end and connecting that
where you removed the original one.

With the ground and which ever of the other terminals now identified and
connected there is only one left and you can now spare your poor tongue!

Of course if you have some sort of continuity tester or a little buzzer this

can replace your tongue in the process. A little cleaner perhaps but any
port in a storm GRIN

Oh yes, do be certain all electricity is disconnected from the mains and it
is probably wise not to be observed particularly by young impressionable
children.

Yes, the wires definitely matter. The screws are likely marked with color
dots or maybe text. The cord you get will have black, white, and green,
wires in it. The green is safety ground, the white is neutral and the
 black
is hot. Your only choice is to get sighted help. You can likely buy a
three wire cord with the plug molded onto it. If you can't find one then
buy a short extension cord and cut off its head. 6 or 10 footers aren't
 all
 that expensive.

 Hello gang
I baught a very old air compresser. It works well but the cord is in very
sorry shape. Instead of replacing it, the previous owner taped it with
electrical tape from stem to stern.
 My questions are these.
first can I just buy a 6 foot three strand grounded cord with a male plug
 on
one end and bare wires on the other end or do I have to buy the cord and
 the
end sepret and put them together?
second and more importantly, do I need sighted assistance to wire it to
 the
machine or is there a way to tell which wire is the ground when I install
 it?
I found the two screws for the -plus and minus and the ground clip so I
know where they are to be hooked up.
 also
with this kind of cord do I need to make sure that the 2 wires that are
 not
the ground are correct or does it not matter.

Ron I was thinking about the idea of a continuity tester, I don't have one
ready made but let me run this by you and see if this will work.
I hope I can explain it well enough.
I have an old home stereo in the garage with detached speakers.
of course each speaker wire has 2 strands a left and a right. Now if I took
for example the left strand and cut it some where between the speaker and
the stereo and hooked one end up to the ground post of the new cord and then
touched the other end of the speaker wire to each of the 3 bare wires one at
a time.
I assume when I find the correct wire I will complete the circuit and get
sound from the speaker. the other 2 wires will not make contact and I will
not get any sound.
Are my instructions clear enough?
and if So, will this work?

[BlindHandyMan] Long crack in new concrete driveway

2006-09-02 Thread Jim Ruby
Hi,

We have a new driveway less then a year old and there is already a long
crack running from the middle of the one side to the middle of the beginning
of the driveway.
We have never had anything heavy on it nore use salt in the winter as that
will cause damage.

My questions are:
Since this driveway is less then a year old
1. should the people who pored it have to fix it?
2. what should I look out for or expect them to do in the repair?
3. how can this be kept from happing again?

Folks who put in either concrete driveways or a more popular concrete
runner drives in the 50's and early 60's around here, now have them
covered with blacktop as concrete drives do not hold up in the Northeast
and as Dale pointed out unless lots of extra preperations are done it
seems to still shift and crack.Where abouts in the country is that new
concrete drive? Lee

OK,

Now what about this switch and outlet? Are these already existing or are
they something you want to add?

My stares comes down the middle of the bacement and it is on one of the
sides I want to build the wall. I will have access to under them through
 the
utility room on the other side of the room.

 Thanks.

 Hi Jim,

This will probably turn out to be a bigger job than you expect just
 because
it is small. It will use pretty well all of the usual frame building
techniques but not so much that you can be efficient with it.

Now I want to know if this wall is down the open side of the stairs and if
so, do you wish to access the space under the stairs?

Your description is good but I want to be sure I understand the task
 fully.
It sounds like there is an existing light switch and electrical outlet
 which

leads me to think that the construction is against an already existing
 wall.

Maybe you are talking of installing a light switch and plug in the new
 wall?

Hope I can be helpful to you.

 Hi,

I would like to put up or finish putting up my wall in the basement and I
 am
not sure the best way for me to accomplish the task myself.

 Description
Finish putting up a few studs and drywall to complete a wall along my
 basement stairs.

 Details
This wall is just studs along one of the sides of my stairs and stops
 about
4 feet from the adjoining wall. I would want to wall this in too so I
 would
have to lay a board on the floor too.
There is one plug-in and maybe a light switch I would have to cut out.
 So I'm guessing
2 by 4s for studs and floor
 Nales
2 by 4 for the floor with either glue and or liquid nales
 Hammer and saw

 So now for direction?

I like to hopefully do this myself *chuckle*
