Re: [BlindHandyMan] FW: How much is a finger worth?
Hi List; How much is your eye sight worth? I lost my eyesight to medical malpractice. What started as an abscessed wisdom tooth that resulted in gangrene. It almost killed me but, in California the laws set limits on how much you can sue for in a medical malpractice lawsuit. I don't much give a damn about how much a doctor has to pay in medmal insurance because when they totally screw up they just walk away and the person they totally screwed over is left holding the bag for the rest of their of life. Yet, you get these dub ass lawsuits that win a plaintiff tons of money for the dumbest reasons! This is a topic that I don't take lightly because of some of the stupid lawsuits like the ones mentioned about hot coffee and people trying to trim their hedges with a damn lawnmower! All I am trying to say is that doctors, at times, should be held more accountable for their actions and this world needs a whole lot more common sense that more stupid laws that allow people to bring such frivalous lawsuits. Okay, end of rant! Take care. [BlindHandyMan] Smith and Wesson Ratcheting Screwdriver
Hi Lee; After playing with the ratcheting screwdriver I found that there is an adaptor that slides into the screwdriver and has a ¼ inch connector so sockets can be attach and used with the ratcheting screwdriver. Also, there is an adaptor that snaps on the little ratchet that allows the screwdriver bits to be used with the ratchet. It is definitely a nice little set. Take care. Mike, It's tax time! Remember folks, if you add, IRS to the word, the, you get T H E I R S . That spells THEIRS!
Re: [BlindHandyMan] smith wesson screw driver set
Hi Lenny; I finally opened the ratcheting screwdriver set up today. The screwddriver has a nice size comfortable rubber handle that is approximately 4 / 5 inches long. That handle also pivots and locks. You can use it as a straight handle, or at 45º, 90º angles. It also comes with a little ¼ inch drive ratchet that is about 4 inches long, ¾ inches wide, and ¼ inches thick. The ratchet will accept either the screwdriver / torx bits or the ¼ inch drive sockets. The screwdriver, as near as I can figure at this time, will only accept the screwdriver / torx bits. I haven't found a way to remove the female screwdriver /torx bit holder to have access to snap on the ¼ inch drive sockets. Overall it seems like a nice set for doing light duty work. Hope this helps. Take care. Mike, It's tax time! Remember folks, if you add, IRS to the word, the, you get T H E I R S . The question that I have is it too small to really use. Not too long ago I gave away a set similar. The ratcheting screw driver handle was too small. I have small hands and could not really use it. If I tried to grip every turn would end up reversing the ratcheting direction. The handle that you had to hold was only about two inches long and I could not get a grip on that. Just wondering if the sw one is better designed. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along. Re: [BlindHandyMan] PenFriend
Hi Edward; I have been using one for about a month or so now. They are truly a great tool for the blind. They come with 3 different sizes/ shapes of labels. One is a small round sticker about the size of a nickel, possibly a little bigger , but not as big as a quarter. One of the others is a round sticker about the size of a half dollar, but not as big as a silver dollar. The last one is a square sticker approximately 1¼ to 1½ inches. When you use all the labels that it comes with you have to buy the packages of stickers in a particular order because of the way they are coded. For example; The starter pack and next pack,, pack A are coded the same. After you use these you want to orderpack B, then C etc. I will email you an owners/ users manual off list so you can learn a little about it before you purchase one. Hope this helps. Take care. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Access Ability: Review of the iBill talking banknote identifier
Hi All, Below is the review of the I Bill money identifier for those who couldn't access the blog. Thursday, December 17, 2009 Review of the iBill talking banknote identifier I previously posted the news announcing the introduction of the iBill electronic banknote identifier, and now, I offer my review of this latest piece of assistive technology for the blind and visually impaired. I'll admit that when I first read that Orbit Research was offering this tool at size, weight, speed, and price thresholds that I have never heard of previously, I was skeptical. I thought to myself that this must be a bit of exaggeration on some part. Surely, this device couldn't do everything they advertise and they can still sell the unit for only $99. Well, the people at Orbit Research were right. I'll boil the iBill down to a few words: Compact, lightweight, fast, accurate, easy to use, and, most importantly, in the realm of assistive technology, affordable. The iBill is small enough to carry in your pocket. Measuring 3 inches wide (just wide enough to insert the end of a bill) by 1.6 inches long, and less than ¾ of an inch thick, it fits easily in your pocket or purse among your keys and USB jump drives. When you hold it, the iBill fits handily in your palm. And, being lightweight is another one of its feature facets. At just 1.5 ounces, you hardly even realize the iBill is present until you need it. The iBill has only two buttons on it to operate the unit and change between the five output settings, the iBill is very simple to use. It comes with both a quick start guide and a user's manual, both of which are well written with clearly defined directions, and easily explaining the unit's design and operation. I tried the iBill with bills in denominations or $1, 5, 10, and 20. I'll give the iBill the benefit of the doubt and figure it will do as well on the $2, 50, and 100 denominations that I didn't use. I intentionally tried to test the limits of the iBill. I first inserted each bill correctly, making sure the corners and edges were smooth and flat. It correctly identified each bill I gave it in about one second. The iBill literature claims a recognition speed of one second. Check. I tried to see if the product would give incorrect readings if the bills had folded or wrinkled corners. When it couldn't identify a bill, it beeped to let me know it was trying to figure it out, but after about 3-5 seconds, it gave me an Error message. It never misidentified a bill. If it couldn't recognize a bill, it announced, Error. The iBill brochure says it is 99.9% accurate. Check. The output settings on the iBill include low, medium and loud spoken audio, a vibration mode, and a tone mode. The spoken audio modes were very acceptable for different settings and announced clear, easy to understand spoken denominations in a female voice. The tone mode worked very well to identify the bills, too. There is a low tone in sequences of 1, 2, and 3, tones for $1, 2, and 5 bills, and a high tone in that same sequence for $10, 20, and 50 bills, all respectively, as well as a low-high, low-high sequence for $100. However, Where I see this as a powerful tool, besides as a quality bill identifier for those of us who are totally blind, is as an equally great product for anybody who is deafblind. With the vibration mode, there are sequences of short or long pulses in identical sequences of the tone mode to quickly identify the different denominations. There's even a very long pulse for an error message. The iBill I tested was a pre-production review unit. I was told that there was a design change to the battery compartment cover, as the pre-production model's cover was difficult to open. I didn't need to change the battery, as they had a brand new one installed, but was curious to see how difficult it would be to open. After trying several times, I never did get it open, so I hope the new model is easier to open. I also demonstrated this product to several visually impaired students and professional staff members who work with these students. With a brief introduction, all but one of the students was able to quickly make the iBill work. The one who had the most difficulty was the only one who was totally blind. All were impressed with the design speed, and accuracy of the iBill. The only constructive feedback anybody offered was a suggestion that there might be an inset on one of the rear corners where a key ring might be attached. This was suggested as possibly aiding in orienting the user to the iBill. There were no complaints about how the iBill operated. To conclude, let me compare the iBill to previous models of similar products. In the past, I've handled a bill identifier that was probably three times the size of the iBill and several times the weight. That device was bulky and not easily carried in one's pockets. Additionally, the lowest price I've ever seen for one of those

Hi David, Bob, Dale, I have been using the Classco brand Talking Caller ID boxes for years and we also have the Panasonic cordless phones with talking caller ID. It would be nice to program names into the box and have just 1 particulaar device screaming at us who is calling. [BlindHandyMan] New info on Verizon TALKS phone
Hi All, I have just learned that the new phone by Verizon that has the TALKS program installed is listed as either a PDA or Smart Phone. It has a Qwerty keyboard and the buttons are very small too say the least. I learned of the keyboard layout from a friend that can see, not from anything I read on the Verizon website. This might work for someone with low vision but, for the totally blind this is an attempt to make an inaccessible phone accessible. I know other companies offer cell phones with screen reading programs but, I would prefer to stay with Verizon because of poor service in our area with other providers. I believe the Braille'n'speak has a stop watch, as does the robotron Aria, a 1990s similar product. I know an engineer who has at least prototyped one, and will write him and see how it goes. There may well be other talking clocks out there with stop watch functions. Tom Fowle [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Hi Victor; I have been told to use cold water so that it will more or less chill whatever is in the disposal and therefore the blades will cut the stuff easier. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Requests for talking multimeter info
Hi Everybody; With the correct item number you can call 800-652-6733 and place the order with a live person if you are uncomfortable with placing an order with the computer. If you place the order using the telephone you need to know that at the end of the item number Jawsis saying the number then t . But the actually there are 2 letters at the end of the item number. There is a t and an e . So the correct number would be 16562 t + e. I hope this cuts down on some confusion for some of you because I ran into this problem, thinking there was only 1 letter at the end of the item number when I ordered 1 for myself. Hi Tom, Would you please tell those of us who would like to know what brand and where we can get a talking digital volt meter? All information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much, take care. I used 120 because my actual voltage at home is 121. These voltages vary depending on your location and your power supplier. I use a digital, talking volt meter and it tells me the exact voltage rather than just indicating 110, so probably the correct thing to do is to base you calculations on your actual voltage at home. I believe this variance I am referring to is why a lot of times you see specifications written as 110-120 or 220-230, etc. Hope this makes sense to you! The formula is watts divided by volts equals amps, or amps times volts equals watts. Also, you can put up to 80% on a circuit. For example, 15 amps times 120 volts equals 1800 watts times .80 (80%) equals 1440. So, you can put 1440 watts on a 15 amp circuit - just change the numbers around if you're using a 20 amp circuit. Hi Jennifer, I don't know what city/state you are located in so there is no way I could give you any recommendations. We have 2 homes in Southern California and in 1 home we use Brinx Home Security and in the other home we use A.D.T Security. Both of these companies offer very good systems and service. I personally like A.D.T because we can get talking key pads/ monitors from them but, like anything else it all depends on how much you want to spend on equipment or service and what you will get. Good luck. Mike - Original Message - From: Mike Rusk To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sunday, July 20, 2008 7:10 AM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] home security I have Protection One here. You might ask your insurance agent, not only about the savings you might receive on your home owners policy, but if they recommend any company in your area. The security system I have also notifies the fire department if there is a fire, and we have had our system go off because of leaving bacon on the stove too long and the fire truck was here before we could get the alarm cancelled, so that's a good thing in case you really need them. I like the way mine is setup because it beeps if some one opens the door, so I know if anyone is coming or going which lets me know even if a family member is going outside or coming back inside so I know where people are in case I want to know. We have gotten kind of lax about sitting the alarm as we do have a pretty good alarm system in our big black lab and are little tiny yorky/losopso! The company does call to verify a problem and that's good too. We list other family members or friends who have access to the home if we are away so they can come check on any reported problem. I didn't opt for the window alarms, but did have a glass breakage alarm installed for the computer area so if some one were to break the window in the study it will go off. Re: [BlindHandyMan] How is your front end?
Hi Lee, Your best bet is to get that truck up on a hoist and thoroughly check out the front end. It could be a number of things like a bad Idler arm, a bad ball joint, or bad control arm bushings. These are all guesses and hard to surmise without actually driving or looking at the vehicle. I have rebuilt hundreds of front ends but they were all older vehicles. There are many reasons why your truck can be doing what it is doing and I for one would not want to jeopardize your safety by guessing. So please get it checked out. Take care. Hi Larry, I had the air ducts professionally cleaned and damn glad I did. They are sheet metal ducts and 25 years of smoking in the house by prior owners plus all the other regular crap that sticks to the ductswas all cleaned out and the house smelled like a house should. This house is in Southern California so humidity did not play too much of a role with things being stuck to the ducts. [BlindHandyMan] A Tribute to MOMS!
MAMA/MOMMY/MOTHER/MOM This is a truly BEAUTIFUL piece please read this at a slow pace, digesting every word and in leisure...do not hurrythis is a treasure... For those lucky to still be blessed with your Mom, this is beautiful. For those of us who aren't, this is even more beautiful. For those who are moms, you'll love this. The young mother set her foot on the path of life. Is this the long way? she asked. And the guide said: Yes, and the way is hard. And you will be old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning. But the young mother was happy, and she would not believe that anything could be better than these years. So she played with her children, and gathered flowers for them along the way, and bathed them in the clear streams; and the sun shone on them, and the young Mother cried, Nothing will ever be lovelier than this. Then the night came, and the storm, and the path was dark, and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother drew them close and covered them with her mantle, and the children said, Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come. And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and the children climbed and grew weary, and the mother was weary. But at all times she said to the children, A little patience and we are there. So the children climbed, and when they reached the top they said, Mother, we would not have done it without you. And the mother, when she lay down at night looked up at the stars and said, This is a better day than the last, for my children have learned fortitude in the face of hardness. Yesterday I gave them courage Today, I 've given them strength. And the next day came strange clouds which darkened the earth, clouds of war and hate and evil, and the children groped and stumbled, and the mother said: Look up. Lift your eyes to the light. And the children looked and saw above the clouds an everlasting glory, and it guided them beyond the darkness. And that night the Mother said, This is the best day of all, for I have shown my children God And the days went on, and the weeks and the months and the years, and the mother grew old and she was little and bent. But her children were tall and strong, and walked with courage. And when the way was rough, they lifted her, for she was as light as a feather; and at last they came to a hill, and beyond they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide And mother said, I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know the end is better than the beginning, for my children can walk alone, and their children after them. And the children said, You will always walk with us, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates. And they stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gates closed after her. And they said: We cannot see her but she is with us still. A Mother like ours is more than a memory. She is a living presence... Your Mother is always with you She's the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street; she's the smell of bleach in your freshly laundered socks; she's the cool hand on your brow when you're not well. Your Mother lives inside your laughter. And she's crystallized in every tear drop. She's the place you came from, your first home; and she's the map you follow with every step you take. She's your first love and your first heartbreak, and nothing on earth can separate you. Not time, not space... not even death! PASS THIS ON TO ALL THE MOTHERS CHILDREN YOU KNOW. MAY WE NEVER TAKE OUR MOTHERS FOR GRANTED... Pass it on to the men too because they have mothers too Block quote end [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Re: [BlindHandyMan] talking tape measure another use
Hi Lenny, Thank you for your response. Could you tell me if your talking tape is called the Pro Tape by Maxi Aids? I can't find a brand name for the one on their website and in talking to customer service they can't find a brand either. They refer to the one they sell as the Pro Tape. When I ask them if it is a Cobolt they don't know. Thanks again, Mike - Original Message - From: Lenny McHugh To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sunday, March 02, 2008 10:31 AM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] talking tape measure another use Hi Mike, I have the Cobolt model. I first purchased it from England. I believe that Maxiaids also carries it. I have two of them. I had one that failed and shipped it back to England for repairs. While wating I purchased a second. After about 3 years the second one failed and I shipped it back and had the repaired one as a backup They were very kind they did not charge me for any repair.. - Original Message - From: Mike Barbara Kimo Jumbo Brunner [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sunday, March 02, 2008 12:44 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] talking tape measure another use hi Lenny, Could you please reply with the brand, model, and where to purchase the talking tape measure you are using? I was showing a contractor my talking tape measure. He wanted information on where to purchase a unit. He thinks that it can help teach some of his workers how to read a tape measure. It reminded me of the time that someone from the Department of Defense in 1980 contacted me about my talking computer. He wanted to purchase 100 units because he had people in the warehouse that could not read.
