Re: [BlindHandyMan] FW: How much is a finger worth?

2010-07-24 Thread Mike Barbara Arcadia
Hi List;

How much is your eye sight worth? I lost my eyesight to medical
malpractice. What started as an abscessed wisdom tooth that resulted in
gangrene. It almost killed me but, in California the laws set limits on how
much you can sue for in a medical malpractice lawsuit. I don't much give a
damn about how much a doctor has to pay in medmal insurance because when
they totally screw up they just walk away and the person they totally
screwed over is left holding the bag for the rest of their of life. Yet,
you get these dub ass lawsuits that win a plaintiff tons of money for the
dumbest reasons! This is a topic that I don't take lightly because of some
of the stupid lawsuits like the ones mentioned about hot coffee and people
trying to trim their hedges with a damn lawnmower! All I am trying to say
is that doctors, at times, should be held more accountable for their actions
and this world needs a whole lot more common sense that more stupid laws
that allow people to bring such frivalous lawsuits. Okay, end of rant!
Take care.
Mike

[BlindHandyMan] Smith and Wesson Ratcheting Screwdriver

2010-04-01 Thread Mike Barbara
Hi Lee;

After playing with the ratcheting screwdriver I found that there is an
adaptor that slides into the screwdriver and has a ¼ inch connector so
sockets can be attach and used with the ratcheting screwdriver. Also, there
is an adaptor that snaps on the little ratchet that allows the screwdriver
bits to be used with the ratchet. It is definitely a nice little set. Take
care.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] smith wesson screw driver set

2010-03-28 Thread Mike Barbara
Hi Lenny;

I finally opened the ratcheting screwdriver set up today. The screwddriver
has a nice size comfortable rubber handle that is approximately 4 / 5 inches
long. That handle also pivots and locks. You can use it as a straight
handle, or at 45º, 90º angles. It also comes with a little ¼ inch drive
ratchet that is about 4 inches long, ¾ inches wide, and ¼ inches thick. The
ratchet will accept either the screwdriver / torx bits or the ¼ inch drive
sockets. The screwdriver, as near as I can figure at this time, will only
accept the screwdriver / torx bits. I haven't found a way to remove the
female screwdriver /torx bit holder to have access to snap on the ¼ inch
drive sockets. Overall it seems like a nice set for doing light duty work.
Hope this helps. Take care.

I don't remember who purchased the screwdriver set in addition to the
multi
tool sets. The question that I have is it too small to really use. Not too
long ago I gave away a set similar. The ratcheting screw driver handle
was
too small. I have small hands and could not really use it. If I tried to
grip every turn would end up reversing the ratcheting direction. The
handle that you had to hold was only about two inches long and I could not
get a grip on that. Just wondering if the sw one is better designed.

  slip it
  Description
This cast iron table sealant and bit and cutting blade lubricant reduces
sliding friction and hang-ups. Repels moisture and dirt and inhibits rust
while preventing resin build-up. Out performs paste wax and contains no
  silicone or CFC's.
In the past Karen read that
It does not prevent wood from taking a stain. Did not find that statement
on
the web page but I think it is still on the can. That is what really
caught
  my friend's attention.
they also have it in a spray.
I have always used the jell and I did ask the salesman which is best. He
told me that some use the spray because it is quick but he personally
likes
the jell. He feels that he gets a better coating and that confirmed my
  opinion of the product.

2010-02-14 Thread Mike Barbara
Hi Edward;

I have been using one for about a month or so now. They are truly a great
tool for the blind. They come with 3 different sizes/ shapes of labels.
One is a small round sticker about the size of a nickel, possibly a little
bigger , but not as big as a quarter. One of the others is a round sticker
about the size of a half dollar, but not as big as a silver dollar. The
last one is a square sticker approximately 1¼ to 1½ inches. When you use
all the labels that it comes with you have to buy the packages of stickers
in a particular order because of the way they are coded. For example; The
starter pack and next pack,, pack A are coded the same. After you use
these you want to orderpack B, then C etc. I will email you an owners/
users manual off list so you can learn a little about it before you purchase
one. Hope this helps. Take care.

I'm considering buying a PenFriend to create labels for just about anything
you can think of. Has anyone on-list used one of these things? If so,
could you please tell me a little about the labels the PenFriend uses. How
big are they? How well do they adhere to things? Are they reusable? Any

top, thickest end they are: the power on/off button; below that is the
toggled volume switch - press the top part to increase the volume and bottom
part to decrease; the next button down is the mode button; below this is a
small hole with a tactile surround where the microphone is situated; the
bottom button, closest to the pointed end of the pen, is the record button.

On the left-hand side towards the top there is a rubberised flap with a
slight protrusion at the top, which is used to pull it open. Under this are
three sockets - from the top downwards they are the headphone, USB and
external microphone sockets. In the packaging there is a small cable to
enable the use of standard microphones and headphones in the top socket.

On the back surface of the PenFriend is the battery compartment (see section
2.2 Battery insertion and removal below), and a hole which only holds a
recessed screw and is not used.

On the back of the pen at the top there is a nodule containing two holes
side by side that can be used to attach the supplied lanyard (see section
2.3 for instructions on how to attach the lanyard). The nodule protrudes
from the unit slightly, which ensures the unit does not roll when put down
on a flat surface.

2. Getting started

2.1 Turning on the pen
To start the pen, press and hold the power button for two to three seconds -
this is the button nearest the top of the device. You will hear an audible
beep. To switch off, press the same button until you hear a chime. If you
do not use the pen for more than three minutes it will automatically switch
off to conserve battery power, and this is also indicated by a chime.

2.2 PenFriend storage box and audio instruction hot spots
PenFriend comes in a re-usable plastic box. We recommend that you keep the
box, since it will neatly hold any new set of labels, etc, that you may buy
in the future.

Audio instruction hot spots
If you would prefer to listen to the operating instructions, the packaging
also includes audio instructions preloaded on to 11 hotspots, five of
which are small round indentations on the outer-face of the cardboard
packaging and six of which are small raised circles on the back of the
cardboard packaging. Switch your PenFriend on and touch these hotspots to
hear audio instructions.

Four of the indented hotspots are on the front of the packaging, down the
right-hand side as it faces you (below the cut out for the lanyard nodule).
From top to bottom they contain information on: power, volume, mode and
record.

The fifth indented

Hi Edward;

Take care.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Access Ability: Review of the iBill talking banknote identifier

2009-12-20 Thread Mike Barbara
Hi All,

Below is the review of the I Bill money identifier for those who couldn't
access the blog.
Thursday, December 17, 2009 Review of the iBill talking banknote identifier

I previously posted the news announcing the introduction of the iBill
electronic banknote identifier, and now, I offer my review of this latest
piece of assistive technology for the blind and visually impaired.

I'll admit that when I first read that Orbit Research was offering this tool
at size, weight, speed, and price thresholds that I have never heard of
previously, I was skeptical. I thought to myself that this must be a bit of
exaggeration on some part. Surely, this device couldn't do everything they
advertise and they can still sell the unit for only $99.

Well, the people at Orbit Research were right.

I'll boil the iBill down to a few words: Compact, lightweight, fast,
accurate, easy to use, and, most importantly, in the realm of assistive
technology, affordable.

The iBill is small enough to carry in your pocket. Measuring 3 inches wide
(just wide enough to insert the end of a bill) by 1.6 inches long, and less
than ¾ of an inch thick, it fits easily in your pocket or purse among your
keys and USB jump drives. When you hold it, the iBill fits handily in your
palm.

And, being lightweight is another one of its feature facets. At just 1.5
ounces, you hardly even realize the iBill is present until you need it.

The iBill has only two buttons on it to operate the unit and change between
the five output settings, the iBill is very simple to use. It comes with
both a quick start guide and a user's manual, both of which are well written
with clearly defined directions, and easily explaining the unit's design and
operation.

I tried the iBill with bills in denominations or $1, 5, 10, and 20. I'll
give the iBill the benefit of the doubt and figure it will do as well on the
$2,
50, and 100 denominations that I didn't use.

I intentionally tried to test the limits of the iBill. I first inserted each
bill correctly, making sure the corners and edges were smooth and flat. It
correctly identified each bill I gave it in about one second. The iBill
literature claims a recognition speed of one second. Check.

I tried to see if the product would give incorrect readings if the bills had
folded or wrinkled corners. When it couldn't identify a bill, it beeped to
let me know it was trying to figure it out, but after about 3-5 seconds, it
gave me an Error message. It never misidentified a bill. If it couldn't
recognize a bill, it announced, Error. The iBill brochure says it is 99.9%
accurate. Check.

The output settings on the iBill include low, medium and loud spoken audio,
a vibration mode, and a tone mode. The spoken audio modes were very
acceptable for different settings and announced clear, easy to understand
spoken denominations in a female voice.

The tone mode worked very well to identify the bills, too. There is a low
tone in sequences of 1, 2, and 3, tones for $1, 2, and 5 bills, and a high
tone in that same sequence for $10, 20, and 50 bills, all respectively, as
well as a low-high, low-high sequence for $100.

However, Where I see this as a powerful tool, besides as a quality bill
identifier for those of us who are totally blind, is as an equally great
product for anybody who is deafblind. With the vibration mode, there are
sequences of short or long pulses in identical sequences of the tone mode to
quickly identify the different denominations. There's even a very long pulse
for an error message.

The iBill I tested was a pre-production review unit. I was told that there
was a design change to the battery compartment cover, as the pre-production
model's cover was difficult to open. I didn't need to change the battery, as
they had a brand new one installed, but was curious to see how difficult it
would be to open. After trying several times, I never did get it open, so I
hope the new model is easier to open.

I also demonstrated this product to several visually impaired students and
professional staff members who work with these students. With a brief
introduction, all but one of the students was able to quickly make the iBill
work. The one who had the most difficulty was the only one who was totally
blind. All were impressed with the design speed, and accuracy of the iBill.

The only constructive feedback anybody offered was a suggestion that there
might be an inset on one of the rear corners where a key ring might be
attached. This was suggested as possibly aiding in orienting the user to the
iBill. There were no complaints about how the iBill operated.

To conclude, let me compare the iBill to previous models of similar
products. In the past, I've handled a bill identifier that was probably
three times the size of the iBill and several times the weight. That device
was bulky and not easily carried in one's pockets. Additionally, the lowest
price I've ever seen for one of those

I did not see a lot of response to your post so i thought I'd add my two
cents. The 800 + choices you found as a result of your search must have
considerable duplication as I don't think there are that many vendors our
there. I have only used one model and that is the VIP talking thermostat.
The website is:

I actually have two of them in my home and have never had any problem with
either one The support from the company is fantastic should you need it. The
directions that accompany the unit are very blind friendly and the unit can
be installed without sighted assistance if needed. The unit is easy to
program or simply use as a standard thermostat. Visit the website and write
back with additional questions if needed. When you log onto the site, you
will actually hear what the voice in the thermostat sounds like

Both of my units speak the numbers automatically but I can add the names in

are in and out jacks on both units. If you get the same model as I have
which will cause me to check as that information escapes me at the moment I

but you can add your own information. Also to hook them up do you need a
splitter cable or is there a piggy back setup on the units? If there is one

Hi Andy,

LG has a couple of models that you might like depending on what you are
looking for in a cell phone. You might want to look at the 5400, the 5500,
or the 8350. Your best bet is to find a Verizon Wireless store in your area
or call Verizon customer service and ask them what models of phones they
have for the visually impaired. Take care.

Hi,
I'm not with Verizon, but I'm using the Motorola Q9c.
I'll admit the small qwerty keyboard scared me at first, but it is doable.
I'm slow, but I'm learning to send text messages and e-mails with it.
On the other hand, if you only want to talk on your phone, you might be able
to do just fine with one of the LG phones that have some speech stuff built
in, without the expense of going to a smart phone.
You might need some help entering contacts, but after that, some of the
digit dial or name dial features work well on some phones. But not all work
equally well. Check them out first if you can, before you buy.

I have just learned that the new phone by Verizon that has the TALKS

the

I know other companies offer cell phones with screen reading programs but,

Again,

the old original Sharp Talking Time 1 had several stop watch modes.
Most who still have them won't give them up because of there many fancy
operations, but you might put out requests wherever you think appropriate
  for a spare one.

I believe the Braille'n'speak has a stop watch, as does the robotron Aria,
a
  1990s similar product.

I know an engineer who has at least prototyped one, and will write him and
  see how it goes.

There may well be other talking clocks out there with stop watch
functions.

Hi Victor;

I have been told to use cold water so that it will more or less chill
whatever is in the disposal and therefore the blades will cut the stuff
easier. Then you can run hot water to flush the drain. This way does work
very well especially for cutting up things like carrot and potato peelings.
Take care.

  Hi Folks,

I was told today, by a friend, that you should use cold water when running
a garbage disposal and not hot or warm water.

Is this true or not, and if it is, why?

I would think that the hot or warm water would soften anything that goes
down the drain and what not, and would actually loosen the gunk up so it
  goes easier on the disposal.

  Is my logic flawed here?

  Thanks all.

Hi Everybody;

With the correct item number you can call 800-652-6733 and place the order
with a live person if you are uncomfortable with placing an order with the
computer. If you place the order using the telephone you need to know that
at the end of the item number Jawsis saying the number then t . But the
actually there are 2 letters at the end of the item number. There is a t
and an e . So the correct number would be 16562 t + e. I hope this
cuts down on some confusion for some of you because I ran into this problem,
thinking there was only 1 letter at the end of the item number when I
ordered 1 for myself. Take care everybody and have a great Thanksgiving.

  Tom,

Further to my message below from yesterday regarding wattage formulas: I
should have used 110 volts in my example instead of 120 because 110 is
probably the more accepted norm. I used 120 because my actual voltage at
home is 121. These voltages vary depending on your location and your power
supplier. I use a digital, talking volt meter and it tells me the exact
voltage rather than just indicating 110, so probably the correct thing to
do
is to base you calculations on your actual voltage at home. I believe this
variance I am referring to is why a lot of times you see specifications
written as 110-120 or 220-230, etc.

Hope this makes sense to you!

  Tom,

Here's a simple way to figure out how much you put on one circuit. The
formula is watts divided by volts equals amps, or amps times volts equals
watts. Also, you can put up to 80% on a circuit. For example, 15 amps
times 120 volts equals 1800 watts times .80 (80%) equals 1440. So, you can
put 1440 watts on a 15 amp circuit - just change the numbers around if
  you're using a 20 amp circuit.

  Thanks,

  Tom

Security. Both of these companies offer very good systems and service. I
personally like A.D.T because we can get talking key pads/ monitors from
them but, like anything else it all depends on how much you want to spend on
equipment or service and what you will get. Good luck.

I have Protection One here. I don't know if they are available in your
city. You might want to contact your police department and see who they
might recommend. You might ask your insurance agent, not only about the
savings you might receive on your home owners policy, but if they recommend
any company in your area. The security system I have also notifies the fire
department if there is a fire, and we have had our system go off because of
leaving bacon on the stove too long and the fire truck was here before we
could get the alarm cancelled, so that's a good thing in case you really
need them. I like the way mine is setup because it beeps if some one opens
the door, so I know if anyone is coming or going which lets me know even if
a family member is going outside or coming back inside so I know where
people are in case I want to know. We have gotten kind of lax about sitting
the alarm as we do have a pretty good alarm system in our big black lab and
are little tiny yorky/losopso!
The company does call to verify a problem and that's good too. We list
other family members or friends who have access to the home if we are away
so they can come check on any reported problem. I didn't opt for the window
alarms, but did have a glass breakage alarm installed for the computer area
so if some one were to break the window in the study it will go off.
  Good luck.

  Hey Guys,

I am trying to choose a company to go with for an alarm system. In truth,
as I have a hundred pound, dog I am not even sure I want a system. Still, I
did a search on my local city and only found one review of one company. Is
there a reliable place to go for this kind of information?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] How is your front end?

2008-06-26 Thread Mike Barbara
Hi Lee,

Your best bet is to get that truck up on a hoist and thoroughly check out
the front end. It could be a number of things like a bad Idler arm, a bad
ball joint, or bad control arm bushings. These are all guesses and hard to
surmise without actually driving or looking at the vehicle. I have rebuilt
hundreds of front ends but they were all older vehicles. There are many
reasons why your truck can be doing what it is doing and I for one would not
want to jeopardize your safety by guessing. So please get it checked out.
Take care.

Imagine if you would that you are riding in a 2000 Dodge sport six
medium size pickup truck and you hit a decent size bump in the road.
all of a sudden your front end is all overy the place. seemingly
rolling from side to side until you get settled back down. Maybe this
truck has been mis used as a four wheel drive in a farmers field when it
is only a two wheel drive. any opinions as to why this front end would
feel like it is all over the place would be appreciated. It is my kids
truck and I do not think it is safe out on the road. just my opinion.

I buy my fairly indestructible carbon fibre canes from California Canes
which is located in Hesperia. The maker of the canes is an inventive blind

California Canes has a website. Ask Jeff. He is a very friendly guy. I

Lee, I have a magic jack also that I use for long calls long distance from
my house. I only have local service on my regular house phone now because
most calls made are long distance that we do, so the long distance ability
was dropped. Now all calls are free without charge and my phone bill has
been reduced around 30 bucks a month.
There is one down side to them. Since my son is home from college and does
gaming online, phone calls are limited to non full game times because of the
constant usage required by high speed gaming. If anyone has a gamer in the
family, you know what I am talking about, especially if their computer is
designed for gaming.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Air Duct Cleaning

2008-05-30 Thread Mike Barbara
Hi Larry,

I had the air ducts professionally cleaned and damn glad I did. They are
sheet metal ducts and 25 years of smoking in the house by prior owners plus
all the other regular crap that sticks to the ductswas all cleaned out and
the house smelled like a house should. This house is in Southern California
so humidity did not play too much of a role with things being stuck to the
ducts. Depending on the age, what the ducts are made of and weather
conditions where you live it would probably be a good move having them
professionally cleaned.

[BlindHandyMan] A Tribute to MOMS!

2008-05-10 Thread Mike Barbara
MAMA/MOMMY/MOTHER/MOM

This is a truly BEAUTIFUL piece please

read this at a slow pace, digesting every word and in

leisure...do not hurrythis is a treasure...

For those lucky to still be blessed with your Mom,

this is beautiful. For those of us who aren't, this is

even more beautiful. For those who are moms, you'll love this.

The young mother set her foot on the path of life. Is this the long way?
she asked. And the guide said: Yes, and the way is hard. And you will
be

old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the
beginning.

But the young mother was happy, and she would not

believe that anything could be better than these years. So she

played with her children, and gathered flowers for

them along the way, and bathed them in the clear streams; and

the sun shone on them, and the young Mother cried,

Nothing will ever be lovelier than this.

Then the night came, and the storm, and the path was

dark, and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother

drew them close and covered them with her mantle, and the children said,

Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come.

And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and

the children climbed and grew weary, and the mother was weary.

But at all times she said to the children, A little patience and we are
there.

So the children climbed, and when they reached the top

they said, Mother, we would not have done it without you.

And the mother, when she lay down at night looked up

at the stars and said, This is a better day than the last, for my

children have learned fortitude in the face of hardness. Yesterday I gave
them courage

Today, I 've given them strength.

And the next day came strange clouds which darkened

the earth, clouds of war and hate and evil, and the children groped

and stumbled, and the mother said: Look up. Lift your eyes to the light.

And the children looked and saw above the clouds

an everlasting glory, and it guided them beyond the

darkness. And that night the Mother said,

This is the best day of all, for

I have shown my children God

And the days went on, and the weeks and the months and

the years, and the mother grew old and she was little and bent.

But her children were tall and strong, and walked with

courage. And when the way was rough, they lifted her,

for she was as light as a feather; and at last they came to a hill,

and beyond they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide And

mother said, I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know the end

is better than the beginning, for my children can

walk alone, and their children after them.

And the children said, You will always walk with us,

Mother, even when you have gone through the gates.

And they stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gates

closed after her. And they said: We cannot see her

but she is with us still. A Mother like ours is more than a memory. She

  is a living presence...

Your Mother is always with you She's the whisper

of the leaves as you walk down the street; she's the smell of bleach

in your freshly laundered socks; she's the cool hand

on your brow when you're not well. Your Mother lives

inside your laughter. And she's crystallized in every tear drop.

She's the place you came from, your first home; and

she's the map you follow with every step you take. She's your first love

and your first heartbreak, and nothing on earth can

  separate you.

Not time, not space... not even death!

PASS THIS ON TO ALL THE MOTHERS CHILDREN YOU KNOW.

MAY WE NEVER TAKE OUR MOTHERS FOR GRANTED...

Pass it on to the men too because they have mothers too

I found this quite interesting. I was showing a contractor my talking tape
measure. He wanted information on where to purchase a unit. He thinks that
it can help teach some of his workers how to read a tape measure. It
reminded me of the time that someone from the Department of Defense in
1980
contacted me about my talking computer. He wanted to purchase 100 units
because he had people in the warehouse that could not read.

Lenny, Please visit my home page http://www.geocities.com/lenny_mchugh/

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] talking tape measure another use

I found this quite interesting. I was showing a contractor my talking tape
measure. He wanted information on where to purchase a unit. He thinks that
it can help teach some of his workers how to read a tape measure. It
reminded me of the time that someone from the Department of Defense in 1980
contacted me about my talking computer. He wanted to purchase 100 units
because he had people in the warehouse that could not read.

It's motivating, humorous and has a lot of resources.
