Victor, here are a couple thoughts.

Two cycle motors burn fuel inefficiently, so stink and leave a lot of carbon
behind in the exhaust system. The rings and cylinder bore tend to wear out much
more quickly and keeping pre-mixed oil and gas around is a nuisance. When the
gas gets old you can't just throw it in your car and get fresh stuff.

Cosco have a 3000 W four cycle generator on sale for 299. I have one and I
think it serves my basic needs: the furnace motor, the freezer, the
refrigerator, and a couple of lights. It's about 125 pounds and comes with two
wheels and handle so that it can be handled like a dolly. There are 2 15 anp
sockets at 110 V, or 130 at 110. There is a low fuel indicator, and especially
important, a low oil shutoff.

There is a reasonably large muffler so the machine is not earth shattering
Lee loud. The few times I have started it it runs with one pull.

Well, there are a couple of caveats with the clunker program. You have to
have owned the car, and had it insured for at least one year. It has to
fit the milage criteria which means it has to get no more than 18 miles
per gal. if you want the full 4500 bucks. Your new car has to get at
least 10 miles per gal more than the clunker. And, if the car is worth
more than 4500 bucks, you might as well sell it instead. Lastly, I've
heard a suggestion that you don't tell the car dealer that you have a
clunker to trade in, until after you have settled on a price for your new
car.

Dan, that is exactly what I was thinking. My feeling is the dealer
will treat the $4,500 as a discount and try giving you nothing. If I

reached a final price, Id then tell them I want the clunker deal.
That would surely make them nuts. grin

You can get a battery to use for back up with your CPAP, or for camping or

Hi Jim and all,

I wasn't really thinking of using it for anything major.

One thing I have a problem with is sleep apnea, and as a result, I have a
  CPAP system at night.

When the electricity goes out, which doesn't happen all that often, thank
goodness, but when it does, I find myself getting no sleep whatsoever
because there's no power on, and my CPAP runs on electricity.

Another thing I would use it for is for events like the large black out
 that
affected the north-eastern part of North America not too many years ago.

We were lucky because our freezer had sufficient ice build up in it that
 it
could go the duration until the power came back up, but should it ever
happen again, I was thinking I could hook it up to one of these little
things and have it running when I needed to keep things frozen or in a
 semi
  cool state.

Granted, I realize that I would have to shut it off ever few hours to
re-fill the tank, but at least I would have power, and continuous power
  until the lights came on.

My freezer is an upright freezer, and not a chest freezer, so what ever
 cold
air in there that happens to build up just drops right down to the floor
once the freezer door is open.

Yes, I know, this wasn't my idea to buy it, it was the wife's idea. LOL.

In any case, Thanks for all your suggestions, and I'll talk it over with
 the
wife, and see if she'll go for it.

I'll present all your opinions to her for closer examination.

  Victor

Good point about the humidifier, my husband does not use his, but I know some
people really like it. Still, the humidifier is not the part that keeps you

For those unfamiliar, people with CPAP's should even take them to the hospital

Hi Jennifer, I've been using a C-pap for about 3 years, and have to have
humidity mixed in or my nose, throat, and mouth will get dry. During the
summer months I hardly ever turn the heating pad on under the water
reservoir. But definitely it's needed during the winter months. Also, my
son in law works for PG and E and he gave me some paper work that I took to
my sleep doctor to fill out and I get some kind of reduction in my electric
bill. How much? I have no idea. I take it with me when ever I go out of
town. When I go camping, I'll have to go to Costco's and get me one of
those batteries. I wish I'd never sold the little 4 stroke Koler generator
I once had, it was about the size Victor asked about.

Good point about the humidifier, my husband does not use his, but I know
some people really like it. Still, the humidifier is not the part that
keeps you breathing through the night and not stroking out.

For those unfamiliar, people with CPAP's should even take them to the
hospital with them. They can die in there sleep without them.

I too use a C-pap machine. Keep in mind that one of these batteries
 work
for a couple days, but you can't use the heated humidifier. If you did,
you'd drain the battery in a few hours.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Opinions on a product

2009-07-25 Thread Tom Fowle
Hi victor
first and most important is what do you expect to run with this
generator Presumably a refrigerator. Unless you have a modern small
fridge, I'd bet you won't get much more than the fridge and a few moderate
lights out of 850 watts.

Fridge and microwave? forget it!

In the specs you pasted, I didn't see anything about whether it's A.C.
output is sine wave, simulated sinewave, or not stated.

If you're running much in the way of electronics, you'd better go for a unit
that generates a pretty good sinewave. This is particularly true of gear
that has transformers in it's powersupply.

I'd steer clear of 2 stroke engines if possible unless they are stated to be
of the very newest cleaner running units. They're dirty and stinky.

this would be considered a truly minimalist generator, really not intended
for long term home use.If all you expect is shorter term use with not
much load, it may do.

Good one's cost a lot, luckilly I don't need one here.

best

Very unlikely 850 watts will hack the freezer. Check it's power rating,
make sure it's well under the generator's capabilities, cause you know
you're going to want to run more stuff on it than the freezer.

 Victor,

800 watts won't boil a kettle or curl the wife's hair. You can run a
couple of lights and the TV. You might run the furnace so long as you
don't need the fridge or the freezer.

Might be nice for camping, it doesn't weigh much.

for something useful in emergencies lasting more than a few hours I don't
suppose one wants anything less than about five kilowatts.

It will be interesting to hear what others think.

hi the question is what are you wanting to use it for.
with only 800 watts it won't do much.
it will run some lights and a power tool or 3 but that's about it.
it won't run a hair dryer or a a larger TV.
i wouldn't trust my computer on it be cause i am sure there isn't that much
filtering on it.

but if you just want it for little things away from the power it should work
fine.
 but not that much

Hi Jim and all,

I wasn't really thinking of using it for anything major.

CPAP system at night.

When the electricity goes out, which doesn't happen all that often, thank
goodness, but when it does, I find myself getting no sleep whatsoever
because there's no power on, and my CPAP runs on electricity.

Another thing I would use it for is for events like the large black out that
affected the north-eastern part of North America not too many years ago.

We were lucky because our freezer had sufficient ice build up in it that it
could go the duration until the power came back up, but should it ever
happen again, I was thinking I could hook it up to one of these little
things and have it running when I needed to keep things frozen or in a semi
cool state.

Granted, I realize that I would have to shut it off ever few hours to
re-fill the tank, but at least I would have power, and continuous power
until the lights came on.

My freezer is an upright freezer, and not a chest freezer, so what ever cold
air in there that happens to build up just drops right down to the floor
once the freezer door is open.

Yes, I know, this wasn't my idea to buy it, it was the wife's idea. LOL.

In any case, Thanks for all your suggestions, and I'll talk it over with the
wife, and see if she'll go for it.

I'll present all your opinions to her for closer examination.

happen again, I was thinking I could hook it up to one of these little
things and have it running when I needed to keep things frozen or in a semi

  Victor

Hi Victor.

Your CPAP would probably run off a computer UPS. If you buy a big one and
load it lightly it will run for the best part of an hour. You can get them
up to a kilowatt for still under 500 dollars. I don't know how things go
for you but here when the power goes out it generally stays out for an hour.
Rarely does it stay off longer. When it does it may be off for a day.

Regards.

This small generator would be perfect for camping or on my boat. It is small
and light weight. The only real problem is it has a
2 cycle engine. So, you would have to mix the oil in the gas. The exhaust
will be pretty messy. The 2 cycle engines are not all
that efficient.

hi the question is what are you wanting to use it for.
with only 800 watts it won't do much.
it will run some lights and a power tool or 3 but that's about it.
it won't run a hair dryer or a a larger TV.
i wouldn't trust my computer on it be cause i am sure there isn't that much
filtering on it.

but if you just want it for little things away from the power it should work
fine.
 but not that much
