Hi,

No, the photocell has only a very small aperature to let light in and it is
sufficiently in below the source of light. They are available in the UK and
come in both Edison and Bayonet style fittings.

Useful for those lights out in the garden for lighting up the driveway.

A photo cell with switching mechanism built right onto the bulb?

Wouldn't the light from the bulb convince the sensor it was always daytime?

  Hi,

Sometimes the lamp unit has a photocell, which switches on/off at dawn/dusk.
However some bulbs also have this unit at the bottom of the bulb. You will know
if the bulb has it built in, as the bulb is bulkier than normal.

If replacing the bulb doesn't work, perhaps the photocell has blown.

I fitted a photocell unit to a metal haylide lamp; the photocell and relay
cost only around £8 and the cell itself can be fitted by drilling a hole with
the holesaw. The cell has a plastic nut and rubber washers to seal.

Hello Blake,

I would use a commercial dust mop for this task. They are from 24 to 36
inches wide and will do a really good job of gathering all of the crud and
directing it to wherever it is that you want it.

Most commercial mops are electrostatic so they really do tend to collect
everything and they are not very expensive. You will need the mop itself and
the handle. The handle will probably last yo for the rest of your life.

Aloha Blake,
I think this is definitely a handyman question.
If I am sweeping in the house, I will often sweep
all the dust to a corner and then it is easier to
get down on the floor and, using a papertowel or
a cloth, you can push the dirt right into the
dust pan. When you're done, you can also use a
damp cloth to get the very fine dust that will probably still be there.

It is not any special light bulb. There should be numbers and letters on the
bulb to confirm this. I wouldn't use a compact fluorscent unless you are in a
pretty moderate climate. Bulbs rated for rough service, as in trouble lights
or traffic signals last longer if the door is used a lot when the light is on.

This won't go over well with the wife, but you are right. The fixture itself
is what makes it different. There are seals to keep the water out of the
outlet. You can run any bulb that fits the threads in the outlet.

This is within reason. Don't plug in a 500 watt halogen bulb, or something
like that. Otherwise it takes a normal bulb.

The only consideration you should concern yourself with is that you not install

Rita,

Believe it or not those old fashioned roller shades are back in fashion. You
can spend anywhere from about $8.00 to $90.00 per window depending upon what
you are looking for.
You measure the inside width of your windows to be covered and your big box
store of choice will custom cut them to your specs. If you are handy,
married to somebody who is or can provide a home cooked meal to a starving
bachelor installation appears to require a scratch-all, some kind of
accessible measuring device and a cordless screw driver. Obviously the job
could be done using a traditional screw driver but that might require two
home cooked meals depending on the number of windows to be covered.

Hi,

Hardware stores, building supply stores and sometimes department stores like
K-Mart sell rolls of paper backed plastic usually roughened to appear like
frosted glass. You pull off the paper and press it onto the carefully cleaned
glass. It takes a little care to get it nice and flat and wrinkle free without
bubbles although small bubbles can be removed by pricking with a pin and
pressing the air out from the periphery toward the pinhole.

Rita,
If you really don't care about looks, and don't want light or anything
else visie through, then cover the darned glass with
good old contact paper, now-a-days it's plastic.

You'd probably have to get them pretty clean first, but it can be had in
lots of patterns, and if its slick plastic shouldn't hold much dust.

Does require some carefull cutting and you have to get it on smooth the first
time, but it should last for years.

That should drive the sightlings nuts!

Well come to that you could paint them over but it would be dark.

There are paints though and etching solutions too. I made a barrister's book
case a couple of years ago with glass doors which a daughter and a son made
stencils to fit then etched through the stencil to form a sort of scroll work
imitating the cast iron on the bench.

Light comes through but image behind is distorted by the texture etched into
the glass. the etching solution was purchased at a local craft store.

Rita,

Automotive window tinting is a great idea however, it is a major pain in the
32nd vertebrae to install. You need to keep it extremely wet during the
initial installation process and as it dries you will need to squeegee out
bubbles and wrinkles.
The glass must be extremely and I mean extremely clean before beginning and
the sheets of tint must be cut to the precise dimensions of the glass they
are to cover. If you are hell bent to tint those windows, Email me off list,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and maybe I can help talk you through that project.

For a short term answer, smear the windows with liquid soap. It will dry
cloudy and give you a little privacy while you determine your options. :) You
could also add a little washable paint for color if you want. this is actually

That should drive the sightlings nuts!

[BlindHandyMan] Porch

2007-02-24 Thread Larry Stansifer
Ok guys,

I guess it is my turn to take a shot at some of this here
Bob Vila home improvement stuff.
I just purchased an investment property that needs a little
work. I have already done a hot-water heater, a toilet and
sink and the troops are finishing up the vinal flooring and
carpeting to-day. Not about to tackle that one, pure black
magic in my book.
My next undertaking is going to be the front porch. It is 8
feet wide and 16 feet long with steps leading up to either
end of it. The construction is a 2x8 framework on what I
think you guys call 4 foot centers. The attaching board on
the side of the house, the 2x8 running the 8 foot width to
another big ass plank and the supporting 4x4s all appear to
be in really good shape. The problem is the 3/4 plywood
decking. moisture has gotten between the indoor-outdoor
carpeting and the decking and it is getting a bit weak.
Replacing the decking appears to be pretty strait foreword
even for a guy who just recently learned how to spell
wood. My question is how the hell do I lay out the steps?
The ones that are there now look like they were hung on as
an after thought and I really don't want to try to use them
as a template.
This is way different than anything I have ever attempted so
please laugh quietly and keep the directions on a remedial
level. Trust me gang... if the contractor that built my deck
for me in trade for a transmission rebuild needed any work
on his Corvette we wouldn't be having this conversation.
Tools, I own a circular saw of unknown origin, a saws-all, a
14 inch chop saw a Dewalt cordless 18.8 volt drill and a
whole bunch of tools that won't work on wood.
*Enjoy the laugh and thanks for any help you can provide.*

For all the more it cost to buy the jacks pre cut, I suggest you buy them. Just
measure the Height and the width you have for the steps and let the lumber yard
worry about it. I believe it cost me about $1.50 a jack more than if I would
have cut them myself .

Ok,
Let me get this clear. If I go to my local lumber-yard/home

The plastic decking must be at a minimum of 16 inch centers or it will belly
out. I personally don't like the stuff, even if it does save work of treating
it every so often.

They are called risers or jacks. It is the 2 x 12 that you cut out for the

  Ok,
Let me get this clear. If I go to my local
  lumber-yard/home
improvement store and tell them I have 6 steps, 4 feet
  long,
8 inches high and 1 foot wide with a drop of 4 feet from
porch surface to the ground. The guy will disappear and
  come
back with steps that even I can assemble?

  Regards

For all the more it cost to buy the jacks pre cut, I
  suggest
you buy them. Just measure the Height and the width you
  have
for the steps and let the lumber yard worry about it. I
believe it cost me about $1.50 a jack more than if I would
  have cut them myself .

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Porch

2007-02-24 Thread John Schwery
I thought the side pieces were called stringers and the part that you
kicked your foot into, climbing the steps are called risers. I think
the board you step on is a tread.

earlier, rj, wrote:

Larry,

They are called risers or jacks. It is the 2 x 12 that you cut out
for the steps. Some people use 2 x 10, which I don't care for.

Damn... I am starting to feel stupid.
What is a jack other than the one you raise a car on? Is
this the entire step assembly or do I need to cut the
upright and step parts in addition to this jack?

Let him know the height say 4 feet. Now let's say the width
you have is 6 feet where the step will end. You will give
him that dimension 4: x 6:. He should be able to give you a
set of jacks to fit the space.
