RE: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys

2010-01-12 Thread Joe Plummer
If he has a bumper to bumper warranty. It will be covered for example a
bumper to bumper warranty for 5 years or 100,00 miles or witch ever comes
first. But it has to be a bumper to bumper warranty.

An alternator is part of the electrical system, not the power train. You can
always check but I've never heard of one being covered for the same time as
the engine.

By the way the garage that diagnosed the problem wanted $400 for them to
furnish and install the alternator themselves. I paid them $25 to diagnose
the problem and saved a total of $175 by purchasing it from Auto Zone and
installing it myself.

This exact thing happened to my wife just one month ago. We took it to the
garage and was told that the alternator was putting out inconsistent
voltage. The voltage would not run steady, which should be regulated by an
internal voltage regulator. We bought a new alternator for our 2001 Ford
Windstar van for about 200 dollars and I put it in myself in less than an
hour. Pproblem was fixed. .

Earlier this evening my wife was driving home. For a few seconds the gauges
on the car went nuts. The speed odometer went up to 80 and then back to 50,
the gas gauge dropped and the light went on. The temp went way up and then
back to normal. It is on a 2003 grand caravan. When all of the gauges went
nuts itonly lasted a few seconds. Wondering if this is because something in
ghe computer or electrical is starting to fail or if some rf got into the
system.

Just wondered if this was a route she takes often. My wife used to drive by
a AirForce radar base and quite often the electronic dash would go berserk

remember which so perhaps some r f can do strange things. But I am with
others, wait until it happens at least two more times and make sure it isn't
at the same location.

I wouldn't worry yet. Sometimes a drop of water hitting the computer can
cause trouble like this. I'd mark it up as a freak until it happens again.
You'll pay a fortune to have someone look at the electrical system and then
get a big CDP, can't duplicate problem on the service order.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys

2010-01-10 Thread Alan Terrie Robbins
Bob,

This is an excellent point. My experience with auto, or
computer repair is unless you can duplicate the problem or
there are certain predictable things that happen before it
occurs, more often than not the repair shop can't find out
what's wrong.

the gas gauge dropped and the light went on. The temp went
way up and then
back to normal. It is on a 2003 grand caravan. When all of

RE: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys

2010-01-10 Thread Tom Hodges
This exact thing happened to my wife just one month ago. We took it to the
garage and was told that the alternator was putting out inconsistent
voltage. The voltage would not run steady, which should be regulated by an
internal voltage regulator. We bought a new alternator for our 2001 Ford
Windstar van for about 200 dollars and I put it in myself in less than an
hour. Pproblem was fixed. .

if the shop tries to make you pay again simply tern them in to the state
also tell them you want your old parts

No one has mentioned the anti-lock breaks? Why they should become a
 problem
under those circumstances I don't know but I do know that they do shimmy
when applied if not working correctly and in some models even when working
 apparently correctly.

A long shot but I bought new tires once and had a bad vibration right
afterwards. When I got home I popped the cap off and found the problem
right off. The idiot put the lugs on backwards so the tapered end faced
 away from the wheel...

Diagnosing by email is much harder. By vibration we need to get a bit
 more
specific. A warped rotor doesn't vibrate at 25 to 40, it feels more like
jerking. A smooth run, a jerk or bump and a smooth run again. The
 bumping
or jerking gets slower obviously as you slow down.

I could happen, especially if the rotors got turned too thin the last
 time.
I've known some um well idiots is really too nice a word. But I've known
 of
people that read the specs on the brake lathe and think that is what the
first cut should be. If the lathe says it can cut 90 thousandths in one
pass then by god that's what you have to do. 90 thousandths off any
 rotor
will put it under the minimum. If it is thin and slammed home with a
 tire
gun they can warp fairly quickly. Not a couple weeks I wouldn't think
 though.

I have known the outer pad to be put on without either putting the anti
vibration glue on, or not bending the tabs to keep the pad tightly in
 place.
Those situations cause a vibration that is often loud as well. When the
brakes are applied you hear sometimes a squealing or a humming type
 sound.
That isn't nearly as dangerous as it is annoying. But since it started
after brake work, I'd take it back and see what they offer. One thing
 you
can do on your own is to take a wrench to the lugs and make sure they
tightened them all. 1 left loose won't cause a serious problem, I have
 had
to run a race car on 3 lugs on 1 wheel before. But that isn't the
 brightest
 way to go.

Take a torque wrench if you have one and 75 to 80 footpounds will keep
 the
wheels on. If you don't have a torque wrench, take a socket or something
and make sure everything is tight.

We have a 2003 grand caravan sport all wheel drive. Two weeks ago for
inspection it needed breaks at the same time I upgraded the break fluid
 to
dot 5.1 and also had the tires rotated.
Now about 45 mph when Karen applies the break she can feel a chatter or
vibration. When she first said it was shaking at that speed I thought
 she
lost a balancing weight. I now suspect rotors. Is there anything that
 can
cause a rotor go bad after about two weeks after installing new breaks?
 The
vehicle has about 40,000 miles and the rotors were cut around 25,000
 miles.
Got to get this thing fixed quickly, next week we are taking my grandson
 to
 Canada to see the falls.
 Lenny

Just to be clear, she feels it while driving or while braking? If it's just
while driving and not using the brakes, we are all off base. That would go
back to the balancing of the tires, or it's possible a belt has shifted in a
tire and that has to be replaced real quick. A shifted belt causes
tremendous heat and will explode the tire.

It's possible a balance weight wasn't completely mounted and has come off
through centrifugal force.

We have to be clear on whether it is a braking or regular driving condition
in any event to head in the right direction.

Bob, not sure how to describe it. I just asked Karen and she said it feels
like a chatter in both the break peddle and steering wheel when she
 applies
the break. It is very slight at 25 but very prominate at 45 or 50.

Now about 45 mph when Karen applies the break she can feel a chatter or
vibration. When she first said it was shaking at that speed I thought she
lost a balancing weight. I now suspect rotors. Is there anything that can
cause a rotor go bad after about two weeks after installing new breaks?

Just to be clear, she feels it while driving or while braking? If it's
 just
while driving and not using the brakes, we are all off base. That would
 go
back to the balancing of the tires, or it's possible a belt has shifted in
 a
tire and that has to be replaced real quick. A shifted belt causes
tremendous heat and will explode the tire.

It's possible a balance weight wasn't completely mounted and has come off
 through centrifugal force.

We have to be clear on whether it is a braking or regular driving
 condition
in any event to head in the right direction.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys

2008-08-14 Thread Larry Stansifer
Lenny,
Did they turn the rotors when you had the brakes done the last time?
In my unhumble professional opinion not turning or replacing rotors when
doing pads is akin to not using toilet paper.
If they were turned once you can probably plan on replacing them. There is a
minimum thickness that brake rotors can be machined to, I think it is 10MM.
Warped or thin rotors is probably the vibration she is feeling.

Now about 45 mph when Karen applies the break she can feel a chatter or
vibration. When she first said it was shaking at that speed I thought she
lost a balancing weight. I now suspect rotors. Is there anything that can
cause a rotor go bad after about two weeks after installing new breaks?
 The
vehicle has about 40,000 miles and the rotors were cut around 25,000
 miles.
Got to get this thing fixed quickly, next week we are taking my grandson
 to
 Canada to see the falls.
 Lenny

I agree with Lary and will add this; Check that all your lug nuts are
tightened to the proper torque. I had some young kid working at the garage
where I get mine inspected, over tighten the lug nuts and had a similar
vibration. One other thing, check to make sure they tightened the caliper . A
loose caliper could cause a chatter when the brakes are applied.

  Lenny,
Did they turn the rotors when you had the brakes done the last time?
In my unhumble professional opinion not turning or replacing rotors when
doing pads is akin to not using toilet paper.
If they were turned once you can probably plan on replacing them. There is a
minimum thickness that brake rotors can be machined to, I think it is 10MM.
Warped or thin rotors is probably the vibration she is feeling.

dot 5.1 and also had the tires rotated.
Now about 45 mph when Karen applies the break she can feel a chatter or

Re: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys

2008-08-14 Thread Bob Kennedy
A long shot but I bought new tires once and had a bad vibration right
afterwards. When I got home I popped the cap off and found the problem
right off. The idiot put the lugs on backwards so the tapered end faced
away from the wheel...

Diagnosing by email is much harder. By vibration we need to get a bit more
specific. A warped rotor doesn't vibrate at 25 to 40, it feels more like
jerking. A smooth run, a jerk or bump and a smooth run again. The bumping
or jerking gets slower obviously as you slow down.

I could happen, especially if the rotors got turned too thin the last time.
I've known some um well idiots is really too nice a word. But I've known of
people that read the specs on the brake lathe and think that is what the
first cut should be. If the lathe says it can cut 90 thousandths in one
pass then by god that's what you have to do. 90 thousandths off any rotor
will put it under the minimum. If it is thin and slammed home with a tire
gun they can warp fairly quickly. Not a couple weeks I wouldn't think
though.

I have known the outer pad to be put on without either putting the anti
vibration glue on, or not bending the tabs to keep the pad tightly in place.
Those situations cause a vibration that is often loud as well. When the
brakes are applied you hear sometimes a squealing or a humming type sound.
That isn't nearly as dangerous as it is annoying. But since it started
after brake work, I'd take it back and see what they offer. One thing you
can do on your own is to take a wrench to the lugs and make sure they
tightened them all. 1 left loose won't cause a serious problem, I have had
to run a race car on 3 lugs on 1 wheel before. But that isn't the brightest
way to go.

Take a torque wrench if you have one and 75 to 80 footpounds will keep the
wheels on. If you don't have a torque wrench, take a socket or something
and make sure everything is tight.

Lenny,
If the rotors are warped, the bad news is that the pads are now garbage. One
should not put used pads with new or turned rotors.

Let them know in a nice way that you are aware of the minimum federally

2008-08-14 Thread Lenny McHugh
Bob, not sure how to describe it. I just asked Karen and she said it feels
like a chatter in both the break peddle and steering wheel when she applies
the break. It is very slight at 25 but very prominate at 45 or 50.

No one has mentioned the anti-lock breaks? Why they should become a problem
under those circumstances I don't know but I do know that they do shimmy
when applied if not working correctly and in some models even when working

Re: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys

2008-08-14 Thread Bob Kennedy

90 thousandths off any rotor
will put it under the minimum. If it is thin and slammed home with a tire
gun they can warp fairly quickly. Not a couple weeks I wouldn't think
 though.

I have known the outer pad to be put on without either putting the anti
vibration glue on, or not bending the tabs to keep the pad tightly in
 place.
Those situations cause a vibration that is often loud as well. When the
brakes are applied you hear sometimes a squealing or a humming type sound.
That isn't nearly as dangerous as it is annoying. But since it started
after brake work, I'd take it back and see what they offer. One thing you
can do on your own is to take a wrench to the lugs and make sure they
tightened them all. 1 left loose won't cause a serious problem, I have
 had
to run a race car on 3 lugs on 1 wheel before. But that isn't the
 brightest
 way to go.

Take a torque wrench if you have one and 75 to 80 footpounds will keep the
wheels on. If you don't have a torque wrench, take a socket or something
and make sure everything is tight.

We have a 2003 grand caravan sport all wheel drive. Two weeks ago for
inspection it needed breaks at the same time I upgraded the break fluid
 to
dot 5.1 and also had the tires rotated.
Now about 45 mph when Karen applies the break she can feel a chatter or
 Lenny
