I just got one (the same ad for p enlargement which I get at least a
dozen times a day) allegedly from "Cecelia Peck."

I know a woman named Cecelia Peck.

A couple of years ago, she was the person in charge of scheduling all the
classrooms, making sure all the necessary equipment (AV, etc.) was in the
rooms where it was needed etc., with some title like "administrative
coordinator" or something like that. Somehow I don't see her being reduced
to spamming . . .

I know the guy who sets the policy, and I suspect he just goes with the
default settings.
Freightliner is strange when it comes to internet access. Not every
employee gets access, in fact, less than half have access.
What really irks me is that ESPN is allowed, but cultural institutions are
not.
One of these days, when I get mad enough, I will start parsing through the
proxy logs to see what are the top 10 web sites the exec's go to.

A lot of the senders are suddenly using names familiar to me - in the last

Marlowe

all promising to rid me of my debts or add several inches. I'm writing it
off as co-incidence for now, because if someone was smart enough to collect
the surnames of the people I get mail from, they'd be able to get the first
names as well, and these have all had different first names. Still creepy
though.
That's happened to me a few times recently as well. Just today I got one
from "Tricia Blankenship". I'm starting to wonder if they're skimming
first/last names off the list archive to use in their random name
generators.

I agree completely, I have started to receive almost twice the amount of
mail in the last few weeks, especially mail about an heiress (who shall
remain unnamed due to filtering) and her video escapades. :-)
Gary
I think the amount of spam I get has gone down a lot since Nov. But I never
got the large amounts that I hear other complain about. I only get one
Nigerian scam e-mail on this account per week. I have a hotmail account
which gets a lot more, but I'm very active in using their filtering.

I didn't know about the law however. I read an article yesterday about
either this law or the campaign finance reform law. Incumbents can send
letters, free of charge (franking privileges*), right up until election day
while challengers (maybe) and support groups must stop 90 days before. And
of course politicians are not hamstrung by the do not call list or law.
Nothing makes me madder than having six phone messages a day during an
election cycle, half of them are hang ups or I get only part of the message.

You could always try creating an address at one of the free mail sites
like Yahoo or Hotmail or something like that for the purposes of
contacting the list administrators.. Looking over my Sci-Fi Lit archive,
I see plenty of posts from people with Yahoo and Hotmail addresses that
apparently are not being blocked.

The Websense category "Cultural Institutions" is filtered.

We use a product from http://www.websense.com/ . This web site filter
blocks about a quarter of the link published on this list.
According to WebSense, they define cultural institutions as :"
Cultural Institutions -- Sites sponsored by museums, galleries, theatres
(but not movie theatres), libraries, and similar institutions; also, sites
whose purpose is the display of artworks. "

Well, the friendly public servants at the Library of Congress have decided
to block numerous whole domains (including att.net) from sending anything
at all to them because they claim that they have gotten spam from someone
using an account at that domain. I've been on the SF-Literature list
hosted there since at least 1998 or 1999, and now I can't respond to posts
on the list or even contact the moderator off-list (because her address is
also on one of the servers which is blocking all messages from att.net). I
don't know if Himself is a member of that list, but Greg Bear is, (though
come to think of it, I haven't seen any recent messages from him, either .
. . ;-) )

And as far as spam goes, as Randy Cunningham commented on his "This Is
True" list, "It's 2004, and the new anti-spam law is in place. Notice any
reduction in the amount of junk in your inbox? Neither have I." In fact,

I am not sure how they determine its unsuitibility. Probably a combination
of content and meta tag data.

It almost sounds like you work for the Federal Government! At the
facility I work at, they block things like Microsoft and other support
related sites that we need, and allow other things like American Idol
fan sites to slip through. We finally had to resort to connecting to
our home computers via Remote Desktop to get to the support sites that
we need access to.

Just out of curiosity, is www.davidbrin.com being filtered because of
the links that are there or because of meta tag keywords? I looked at
the source of his page and didn't see any references to "cultural" that
might get blocked.
