He said he hurt himself when he popped up! He was in his fifties, I couldn't have done that and I was 24. Here is the bad part: the power wasn't off, but there was supposed to be nothing turned on in the house. So there was voltage but no current. I didn't understand it, I was there just to help. It was a mostly empty rental house. Someone decided to plug the fridge in. When it turned on, bang. Let me tell you about the time I was on a high lift inside a factory working on lights and saw the overhead crane coming at me, fast.in fact the brother of a friend of mine was killed by an overhead crane. He had it locked out but it was wired wrong, the other kill switch re-activated the power when pushed in. Let me tell you why I'm a computer programmer now, the scariest thing I have to do is drive in and ride the elevator... Kevin T. *It was only a 24 foot ladder and he was below the top, so his feet may have been at 12-14 feet. But still,,,. ___ http://www.mccmedia.com/mailman/listinfo/brin-l

Was it on this list awhile back (at least back while we were on the Cornell server) that we had the discussion about always being careful to discharge the flyback capacitor before doing any work on a TV set or computer monitor (and at least one person¹ confessed to have learned that lesson the hard way . . . )? _ ¹Not me. I learned how to do it when I was tasked with writing a computer maintenance manual many years ago, and so far have never forgotten to do so before sticking my finger in that little hole on the side of the CRT (or anywhere else inside the set for that matter) . . . --Ronn! :) That was me, very first day on the job as a TV repair person. We were picking up a big tube, at least 29 INCH* and my finger slipped right into the hole. WHAM! The person I was working with didn't know about the voltage either, he just stood there and laughed. I was showed by an older electrician how to play with high voltage. I've had 480 dancing on my finger tips. I was with him unhooking a house from the outside electric, which someone turned on. He twisted his ankle falling from the ladder after getting shocked but was otherwise okay. We took a break and he went back at it. Especially make sure you've turned off the water to the toilet before you start mucking with its innards. (Dan never *did* get a coherent explanation as to why I was mopping up the bottom of the shelf with a towel, but I think he figured it out. And that was 2 houses ago, and I haven't neglected *that* detail since.) I got good enough with toilets, I was able to fix the problem at my mother's aunt's house with less than $10 worth of parts. Saved her a plumber's bill, which she was happy about. Oh, and before you disconnect the water pipe going into the toilet, having a decent-sized bowl to stick under it to catch the last bit that didn't leave the tank when you flushed after turning off the water works a lot better than just a mess of towels, but have the towels handy, just in case.
