Interesting note for people who do not watch both. The actress who
plays Veronica Mars was also in a couple of Deadwood episodes.
Needless to say, the differences between the two shows are rather
 striking.

I am surprised that Carnivale is not on this list. It is at least on
par with Deadwood, and I would definitely say it surpasses Battlestar
and Veronica Mars in quality (I have not seen the other shows so I
 withhold judgement).

Also just as a side comment, I grow more saddened each year at the
number of quality shows on cable that can never see air time on
network tv (unless they are rather heavily edited). I guess thats what
you get when the FCC enforces the lowest common denominator.

Don't involve government when the networks do it themselves.

6 BEST DRAMAS ON TV NOW
Need a change of serial? It's not too late to taste-test these

And the shows are:-

The Shield
Deadwood
Lost
Battlestar Galactica
Veronica Mars
House

I'm a huge fan of the new Battlestar Galactica, and I really enjoy Deadwood,
Lost and House as well. House is very out of place on Fox (no car chases or
scantily clad young women), but it seems to be doing pretty well.

It's interesting that Lost and Battlestar Galactica are also up for
Hugo Awards this year as well as being on most critics' best new show
lists. And Veronica Mars is the show on the most 'best' lists with the
fewest viewers...

Battlestar Galactica is real science fiction, so I can understand why the
Hugo voters might like it. That show doesn't have any of the silly camp that
the original seemed to love indulging in, but has a more realistic (even
bleak) outlook instead. Lost is more of a character driven show with fantasy
elements, so while I enjoy it, I wouldn't give it a Hugo. As for Veronica
Mars, does that show air on a smaller network? It doesn't seem to have made
it up to Canada.

It is on UPN. Begins in about 20 minutes, fwiw: the same time as House
airs on Fox.

I watch very little TV other than sports, but I thought I'd give Deadwood
a try the other night.

Makes me sleepy just thinking about it...
