[BVARC] Icom 52a CTCSS / RX CTCSS confusion

2023-02-22 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
When I have CTCSS Hz / RX CTCSS as different values, as set by Texas
repeaters book, I thought your "Tone mode" is set to TSQL as a result I
hear nothing and Tx nothing. But...I can hear good set to TONE but I am
not getting out at all. Please advise.

Thankb you

[BVARC] Blue Angels

2023-01-16 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
Along with Fort Morgan 2 miles away from my beach house we are on the Blue
Angel's winter practice run waypoint. Turning 180 degrees on the fort
waypoint back and forth over and over 2-3 times a week. It's hard to sleep
when those blue birds fly over at 500 feet. Saw them preform a Houston air
show in October but had my hands full with a 900mm camera lens. Never
really thought about a HT and monitoring them. With the Houston air show
here in October I saw lots of HT working that day too. Any one have the
Blue Angel's current frequencies. Monitoring times has a confirmed from
2014 and I know the change them from time to time...but I did see alot of
HT that day. Maybe someone in BVARC had a current set of frequencies.
Headed to Fort Morgan next week for a few months and know the Blue Angel's
WILL BE THERE!

Thanks,
Gayle Dotts

[BVARC] Inverter question

2021-03-01 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
My emergency contingency consists of 3 solar panels totaling 200+ watts
charging 3 Marine 12v batteries, then hooked up to an 2000 watt inverter.
All to run a 7 cubic foot chest freezer a couple of fans and some lights.
Had this since 2012 "end of the world scare" but never actually used in an
emergency until our BIG freeze. It failed!!
Everything was charged up and working except my inverter. When hooked up
it made a beeping sound and then shut down.. I read somewhere that they
might have an internal battery that might have failed. Any thoughts?

[BVARC] beacon or not... CW or not?

2021-02-28 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
Listening to 10 meters to the only CW beacon on frequency at 28.251 this
weekend. To help I have a downloaded morse code audio translator to help
the massive blur of dat-dashes that I can't keep up with on my own. This
particular one had spelled out ...DEKC5SQD/B..EL29GO. Figured out the
EL29GO as the grid square as to origin map but thought this beacon should
have a callsign or something legible written out I thought. Found another
CW on analog with the more gibberish followed by the grid square of origin
too. Is there talking actually going on in CW when it is found? First try
at Morse Code for me. Please advise.

[BVARC] Anytone 868 Code plug

2019-07-18 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
Been working with mine Anytone 868 for weeks now. Cant get any digital TX

[BVARC] Talk group

2019-02-08 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
Hi Michael,

My problems all fixed by sending in my 868 and getting a replacement radio
back yesterday under warranty. The original 868 WAS discovered by Anytone
868 REP as defective! I am getting Tx & Rx great with Digital DMR TG 310 &
TG 311 easily!!
What other TG are you able to get other than the 3XX series? All the other
TG I have in my code plug come up silent. TG13, TG 99, TG113 etc and tried
different time slots on them too. I have discovered the "TG 4000" which
disconnect and clears the TG hold on the ZUMspot to supposedly open me up
to go to another TG but not able to tie into any other Talk groups yet.
How about you?
Any advise?

Re: [BVARC] BVRAC Meeting -- DMR Additional Information

2018-06-24 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
Rick,

Thinking on adding the Anytone D868uv radio. Have you yourself grabbed a
radio for DMR yet? Yes programming may be tough on the radio itself, I
have a ZUMspot which will program DMR-DStar-Fusion radios and excicute
programs for you...link and unlink connections. It did for my DStar radio
with out actually touching the radio itself to get connections and change
connections around for comms.

Re: [BVARC] Allstar connecting help

2018-04-21 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
Yes tried another repeater. One problem my new radio Yaesu FTM100drthe
(* key) is a VFO/ Memory mode switch so when I hit * to give AllStar
commands the radio switches VFO and memory and dosen't run the AllStar like
the youtube videos say. Its a new radio as of 7 days ago. Trying to
connect to specific node type repeaters in Alabama and Florida to get beach
conditions.
I own a rent house 100 feet off the beach in Gulf Shores Alabama and trying
to get in touch with the locals especially during hurricane months.
Thought the FTM100dr with its fusion would give me node rooms like the
ALABAMA LINK room to do this... which it does...BUT more people from all
over America and world are on it more than people from Alabama. Which led
me to an AllStar setup to connect to a speciific node and the people
there. Not having much luck...Need advise..

Re: [BVARC] 2/70 uhf/vhf home base antenna

Thanks Mike,

I was trying to connect to Digital Fusion repeaters but DMR I know nothing
about. Antenna is on top of my chimney, I have no building shielding with
a good line of sight...open fields to my north and north-east. Using rg8x
power at 25 watts. I live at FM 1093 and FM 723 Westheimer Lakes
subdivision. Thought I had good reception with initial connection (new just
got radio 4 days ago) but had totally no connection on 444.000 from Friday
through to Sunday night at 10pm which worried me. Thought it was my
FTM100dr so I kept resetting it to factory default settings all weekend. It
finally it connected for me Sunday at 10pm. That's why I thought it might
be my antenna. Please advise. Thank you for your help.

[BVARC] Civil lawyer help

2017-11-07 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
We need the name of a good civil lawyer. Over the weekend my wife and
daughter was hit and driven into a freeway column going 55 MPH. I am
blessed that I am not widowed and lost all of my family today! Truck was
totaled, wife suffered 3 breaks in leg, 4 ribs, cracked sternum and facial
damage, daughter too. The accident was ticketed against the other driver,
20 years old, who has no insurance and we do have witnesses. Our insurance
is full on our truck as it should be. My wife and I have been without jobs
for over a year. I have medical insurance and so does my daughter but my
wife does not. We need a civil lawyer to help us. With hundreds of
lawyers here in Houston not ALL of them are good lawyers. I am lifting this
up to BVARC as a “S.O.S.” and hoping for a name.

Thank you,

Re: [BVARC] Height for a rotatable 10 meter dipole

2017-10-03 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
Thank you James!

The web site does give good facts and figures concerning off the ground.
My thoughts are a side of house roof deployment upwards has half of the
rotatable antenna over a roof 9 feet off the gronnd starting at the roof
edge and covering half of the antennas pattern. I would think that should
account for some action-reaction on the antenna itself. Just a thought.

found specs on the LMR stating loss per foot on cable runs. That within

[BVARC] Museum Ships Weekend

2017-06-04 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
Have been looking forward to Museum Ships weekend for several years now,
each year a disappointment for me...but this year would be better!!! Heard
nothing from the USS Stewart or USS Cavallia on 10 - 20- 40 meters all day
Saturday or Sunday. Bought a new Icom 7300 last week "just for the event".
Hoisted my also new Alpha- Delta DX-EE and my 10 meter Moxon 30 feet in the
air...but nothing from Galveston I live in Richmond...maybe I'm too far
away for HF from Galveston??. I did hear a little faint but soon lost USS
Lexington and USS New Jersey Saturday morning on 20 Meters but being a Tech
I couldn't contact them*darn*! Saturday around 2 P.M. tried the Ships
Net 147.14 did it happen?? I couldn't hear anything there either. Well
maybe next year. I did order today a 10-20-40 long-wire drop my other
antennas, thinking I can start it on my 30 foot push-up mast 2 feet off the
edge of my roof and go out from there getting it away from the building. I
have heard 2 good BVARC friends that uses a long-wire for their HF...maybe
they knows something. I did hate missing out on the fun at Museum Ships
weekend again!

[BVARC] Looking for good end fed antennas

Hello BVARC,

Looking for a good end fed antenna to hang on my 35 foot push up mast next

disrupted to a degree by the house or roof with the antennas I currently
have (10M Moxon, Alpha- Delta DX-EE). I figure with an end fed antenna I
can go out from 2 feet off the edge of the house better in many directions
than dipole does being a center fed configuration. Just need a good end
fed brand to go after. I have my antennas fed by RG8x coax cable 100
foot. Please advise.

Put an SWR meter to the 10 meter Alpha Delta DX-EE, results:

Set to CW
28.488 2.9
28.360 3.0
28.300 3.1

the dipole is at 8 feet each side.

Thank you guys. I orientated the wires so that I could with little effort
switch directions to accommodate. The degree of angle off straight up and
down I can play with. Elevation on the mast in an inverted V is around 35
feet.

For observations on the 20M, 40M and 80Mtraffic feels like it has
increased 70% on all bands with stations I had not heard before or the
ability to hear before. The 10M I will have to observe using the 10M nets
coming up to comment on.

[BVARC] Inverted V dipole orientation

2017-05-07 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
Setting up a inverted V multiband dipole 30 feet in the air and was
wondering should I orient the wires to begin with so broadside to the
dipole is North and South or should I orient it for East and West
broadside? I do know that broadside is where most of my signals will come
from...or does it really matter?? Also usually one sets up dipoles wires
so the combined asmith is close to 180 degrees. Can I do a 90 degree
combined asmith.. or will that decrease my signals?
Thank you for your thoughts guys, I appreciate it!

Thanks Gary,

Working with it tonight...Home Depot run produced a volt-ohm meter per your
suggestion. I'll run CW and investigate further. Was on the roof all
afternoon with my antenna chasing down RF reported in my signals, glad to
say I found the culprit and didn't fall off the roof.

[BVARC] Power supply

2017-04-08 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
Got a question on power supply for my Yaesu FT-920.

The FT-920 manual says: 13.5V DC….Rx(w/signal) @2.5A, Tx (100W)
@22.0A. My current power supply is a MFJ-4225MV 25A switching power. Is
this MFJ will power the Yaesu but I don’t really see the 100W on output Tx,
although the amp meter on the MFJ shows 6-12A while transmitting running
low to high on the RF PWR knob on the FT-920. Do I need to increase the
power supply?? Please advise.

go.

Re: [BVARC] Lightning Strike

2017-01-16 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
Just to be clear I had no radio gear there at the beach or probably will
ever. I am concerned about my gear here in Houston which, at this time, IS
poorly protected and through the lightning strike at the beach made realize
how much more vunderable I really am here now. Are lightning arrestors any
good I've heard in some posts that they are snake oil. *Thank you* for your
thoughts for our beach house. Yes I hated to hear about our losses there
and all the surrounding beach houses all had losses too from this but not
as much as ours. I will contact the light company for added protection
coming in from the lines to see if they can help.

[BVARC] Lightning Strike

2017-01-16 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
I’ve got a beach house in Gulf Shores Alabama. Last week it had a direct
hit to the house by lightning, took out the refrigerator, 4 tv’s, phones, 4
surveillance cameras and much more. Luckily It had no radio gear or
antennas there…which brings me to here…

My NOW attempt to layer my radio shack for protection against lightning.
Like unplug radio, power and cables, ground radio chassis. I’ve have heard
an antenna doesn’t get hit as such until you ground it at which time it
becomes a lightning rod and as such now attracts lightning, so don’t worry
about the tower as much as the lines coming in. Is this correct? Sorry
for being so chit-chatty guys but this is a real concern that got personal
with the lightning. I don’t have much protection at all except a copper
rod outside my window with the radio chassis grounded there. I guess I
need to add more protection. I have watched you guys at field day just
ground the line, I thought, coming off the antenna in to the radio area,
was there more I didn't see?

[BVARC] Yaesu FT-920 owners

2017-01-14 Thread Gayle Dotts via BVARC
Recently bought a used Yaesu FT-920 radio at a great price and do have the
manual. Sometimes the manual can be a little light compared to an actual
owner/operator experience with one in action, plus being a used unit an
owner would know if certain characteristics exhibited are normal or not. I
do have a few questions. If you would be so kind as to respond back with
your email address as to having an FT-920, I would be very appreciative.

Finished my 10 meter Alum tube dipole antenna 8'-3" per side. FT-920 shows
high SWR. Did I made this one too long? It is up 20 feet. Please

6 Meter vertical completed.
With BVARC help and info: new height legnth , new radials legnth, 1" wide x
5" long loading coil. thank you! Currently bottom of antenna is up
only 10 feet off ground (all the height I have at present).
SWR.. shows 1.3 @ 50.125 with power set at 25% using LDG AT-100Pro
Autotuner.
No contacts heard but band may be quiet at the moment. I'm hoping for the
best.
