Re: [BVARC] Amateur Radio Saves Family

Nice article.

I would like to get my vehicle setup for HF. I am thinking it could be just for
use when stationary - easy to take down and put up.

Does anyone have recommendations for relatively inexpensive vehicle HF antenna?

As someone who off-roads in some these remote areas out west this is a
terrifying and heartwarming story out of Death Valley NP. It's one major reason
we carry HF in our rigs and always develop a PACE plan prior to any trip.
Anecdotally here's what ours usually consists of.

Primary: Cell Phone - no service is common when you get off the beaten path but
cell phones are by in large reliable.

Alternate: Satellite Phone - a great reliable backup but I have had both
Inmarsat and Iridium both fail on me before.

Contingency: HF radio - we use this for truck to truck to camp comms but never
needed it in an emergency. Glad to have it though.

Emergency: SoS beacon - expensive and thankfully I've never had to use it
beyond testing prior to deploying in the field.

Re: [BVARC] Computer remote access for WSJTX

2023-08-08 Thread Shannon Tassin via BVARC
My sound comes through just fine on all my devices.

I have found that sound can be difficult when running WSJT-X. I’ve spent lots
of time looking at the sound settings on the computer I have the rig connected
to. I know for certain it is a computer issue (because it happened before it
started using Chrome Remote Desktop), but after a period of time, my computer
decides to send the sound out through the speakers instead of out to the rig. I
have to close and reopen to WSJT-X for it to work right again. This behavior
happens exactly the same when running Chrome Remote Desktop.

For me, Chrome Remote Desktop sound works perfectly – it sends exactly what
would come out of the computer speakers. If you are having trouble, it must be
something specific to your setup.

Thanks, what I notice with Chrome remote Desktop is not capturing the sound. I
just try team view and I can hear sound from my iPad if I use SDR play as an

Re: [BVARC] HF antenna and coax

2023-08-06 Thread Shannon Tassin via BVARC
Venkata,

The ARRL On the Air magazine Sept 2021 edition page 22 has a project to create
a portable vertical antenna using the MFJ-1979. If you are an ARRL member, you
can use the ARRL mags app to find it. It has a mount and everything else needed.

I’ve made this project and tried it out and it works quite well. The article
has you mark the antenna for the right spot for each frequency, but if you have
a tuner in your setup, you can extend it all the way, tune it, and it will work
well without the manual adjusting. I have a backpack and a PVC tube I use to
make it all portable.

I made some tweaks to the project including a round plate to attach the radials.

We have some coax experts in the group and so I am sure they can give you more
information, but keep in mind for HF, you don’t need as high of quality coax as
for VHF/UHF.

Happy to give you more details – send me an email.

Thanks,

Subject: [BVARC] HF antenna and coax
Hello all,
I am working on setting up a temporary HF antenna that I can setup or take down
when not in use. For this, I am exploring MFJ 1979 telescope antenna. I am not
sure if this is the right choice yet. My idea was to use some mount(yet to
figure this out) in the backyard, run the cable inside the home when I want to
use HF. In addition, when I am visiting some park, planning to mount if using
some mag mount. I don’t have much of a backyard and wanted to see if this
antenna can be used at home and when I am visiting places. With this info, I
have few questions. Please bear with me as I am absolutely new to Ham and might
ask dumb questions. While reading, one thing I realized is that, the antenna
depends on the bands I wish to use. Well, at the moment, I want to start with
something that can get me on air for commonly used frequencies where I can
listen in and learn how to use the radio. At the moment, all I have is a HF
transceiver with builtin tuner.

1) Is 1979 a good antenna? It appears it is around $70 and I am assuming this
can get me started without breaking any bank.
2) Coax…looking at the options, this seems like a candy store and I can’t
figure out which one. I am guessing something around 50 ft in length might work
and my limited research shows LMR 240 might be good option. Is this true or
should I find a better alternative?
3) Any suggestions on mounts for the antenna that I can use in the backyard?

Ps: Thank you to Ed and Richard for pointing me in the right direction at
Fulshear farmer’s market. I am also researching on end fed antenna but this
will be a build/diy project.

Thank you for all the guidance and suggestions.

Shannon,

Common practice following rising postal rates.

Cards started out as real post cards, then got fancy with color photography+.
In order to keep them pristine, mailing in an envelope became customary,
drawing even more postage.

When in Indonesia, it was common for me to receive their QSL card with a self
addressed envelope enclosed with a dollar, real stamps or a “green stamp” (that
was killed years ago) – an international postal unit of value about two thirds
of the time. Motivated me to respond in stellar fashion. Started a significant
stamp collection.

With large numbers, gets to be a real job, often farmed out to QSL Managers,
hence the drive toward different e-QSL verifications of contacts “chasing
paper”.

Any tips on how to do this? Do I need to register with the countries? Create a

Any advice on small HF antenna to bring?

[BVARC] Ham Radio Deluxe - Terrible Customer Service!

2023-03-21 Thread Shannon Tassin via BVARC
All,

I purchased Ham Radio Deluxe on 3/10/2023. I did a trial back in 2021 when I
was a new ham and didn’t purchase then, so was no longer eligible for a trial.
Now that I am into FT-8, I was looking for a way to control the DT-G (digital
gain) on my Yeasu FT-991A.

On the website, the first statement listed is: “Rig Control with full command
support for Yaesu, ICOM, Kenwood, Elecraft, Ten-Tec, FlexRadio, and more”.
There is no asterisk directing you to a listing of things that cannot be
controlled. So based on the advertising, I assume full control of my rig.

Within the same day of purchase, I try to find how to control DT-G, reach out
to their technical support, am told the software cannot do it, and ask for a
refund. On the same day of purchase.

Dr. Michael (Mike) Carper, VK4EIE (WA9PIE), the owner, starts responding to my
support requests and refuses to give me a refund. At first, he tells me with
FT-8, I shouldn’t need to be changing DT-G so I don’t need a refund. My
position is, regardless of whether I should or shouldn’t need to do that, I
bought the software just to do that, and it cannot.

He then proceeds to take the position that there is nothing wrong with his
advertising nor software and thus refuses a refund. He then proceeds to insult
me with statements like the following quote: “We also cannot control your Mr.
Coffee or smart home devices through the FT-991A. But that's due to the same
exact reason - there's no command in the FT-991A command set for a Mr. Coffee
or smart home devices.”

So much for customer satisfaction!! I am not trying to take advantage of him
nor get something for free – I tried the software in one day and asked for a
refund and he could have disabled my license key then.

I’ve heard there were issues with this company before and I can clearly state I
would never do business with this company again given the customer service I
have experienced.

quality - I couldn’t put the volume much above 1 or 2 or it would have been way

Re: [BVARC] Antenna Experiance

2022-10-24 Thread Shannon Tassin via BVARC
Hassan,

To specifically answer your question, no, I do not have experience with either
of those.

As you will see, we all have opinions when it comes to antennas. If you are
looking for a mobile (that is also my permanent home antenna) multi-band HF
antenna, I have had terrific results with
https://www.ebay.com/itm/164366131025. It is smaller and cheaper than the
others you are looking at. I use with some green paracord and use a throw
weight like this
(https://www.amazon.com/PETZL-Jet-Throw-Bag-250-g/dp/B00994MFRE/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?crid=3RG0QFPD3590R&keywords=tree+throw+weight&qid=137925&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIzLjU0IiwicXNhIjoiMy4yOCIsInFzcCI6IjIuNTIifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=tree+throw+w%2Caps%2C111&sr=8-3-spons&psc=1&smid=A3LSSUC763MAC)
to get it up in trees. Blends in well and I’ve made over a thousand FT8
contacts as far as 10k miles away using it.

For a mobile and small VHF antenna, I recommend the Ed Fong DBJ-2 dual band
roll up antenna (http://miklor.com/COM/Fong/DBJ2-EdsDesk.php). It was $36 when
I bought it in 2020. I have the similar TBJ-1 tri-band as my base antenna at
home. I can’t seem to find his website so not sure how he is selling now but
his email is edsanten...@gmail.com.

Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Thanks,
Shannon Tassin

Re: [BVARC] Dipole - one day ok, next day high SWR

2022-10-14 Thread Shannon Tassin via BVARC
All,

Thanks for the advice.

When I left it yesterday, my feed line coming out of my soffit was run down
over a metal roof and then laid a bit over the ground before going up to the
antenna. I hadn’t pulled the slack back into the attic yet. It’s good LMR 400
direct burial coax so I didn’t think anything of it.

Later this morning, I went into the attic and pulled the slack out such that it
no longer goes near the metal roof nor touches the ground. Magically, that
fixed the problem. Maybe it jarred some water loose also.

If this spurs any thoughts, let me know, otherwise I’ll get some of the
wrapping suggested (I had used silicone coax wrap) and rework my connection
wrapping.

Thanks,
Shannon

[BVARC] Solder help

2022-10-01 Thread Shannon Tassin via BVARC
Happy Saturday All,

I am working to improve my homemade vertical HF antenna project that I made
several months back based on an ARRL magazine article.

This washer will allow my ground stake to fit through the middle and gives me a
nice surface area for attaching my 10 ground radials. It was a leftover from
another project so I don’t recall exactly what metal it is. My problem is that
I cannot seem to get the solder to stick to it. I am very much a beginner with
soldering.

What do I need to do differently?

I would highly suggest getting into FT-8. Use the WSJT-X software along with
GridMapper running at the same time. Frequencies are built-in so nothing to
worry about it. Any time of the day there are hundreds of folks on most bands.
It works no matter the snack or drink so it can be your choice!

Happy to talk if you’d like more. I got going a few months back and have been

Re: [BVARC] ethernet question

2022-09-18 Thread Shannon Tassin via BVARC
Two previous messages are on point - use other cables to make sure it is not
the cable, try other ports and unplug everything else from the switch.

I recently had an entire switch fail and had to replace it. At the beginning of
troubleshooting I told my wife “it’s likely not the switch, they never fail”,
it of course was indeed the switch that completely failed.

So if you do all of the above and still have issues, it is likely the switch!

Hope this helps,

perfectly for months. But I am now seeing error messages indicating short
intermittent sequence errors (dropped packets I suppose you would call it)
between the radio and the computer. As you would expect, the audio drops out
when the errors occur.

First step in my process of elimination was to circomvent the switch and
connect the radio directly to the computer. That killed all sequence errors and
all worked as it should. Next step in the process was to reconnect the computer
and the radio to the switch, but remove the ethernet surge protector from the
run between the switch and the radio. That made no difference and the errors
resumed. Now I figure it's got to be bad ethernet cable or the switch needs to
be replaced.

Any thoughts on this from my computer savvy ham friends?

Re: [BVARC] backup power plan

2021-05-03 Thread Shannon Tassin via BVARC
I recently made many calls and talked to many vendors to determine the best
backup power plan. I was hoping that solar plus battery would not only provide
power during an outage but would also always provide power.

My conclusion was that whole home backup generator is still the only cost
reasonable option. That will cost you $10-15k (but they are in short supply and
you likely won’t get until November) whereas solar plus battery is more like
$50k. I was even told by one solar company that when the power is out, the
solar panels get shut down so as not to push electricity back to the grid so
they don’t generate at all when the grid is down. So for a long outage all you
have is the battery and no ongoing solar generation.

[BVARC] Recommendation for 2m/70cm Vehicle Mag Mount

2020-12-02 Thread Shannon Tassin via BVARC
Hi all,

I would appreciate any recommendations for a car mag mount that will cover both
2m & 70cm. If I can get it quickly through Amazon, that would be a bonus!

I don’t plan to drill any holes as I will likely move this between cars and
take it off when not in use. So I’ll want it to have a small wire that I can
run between the door and the car when in use. I know this is not ideal and I
risk crimping the cable, but some initial tests suggest this will work fine
with my main vehicle and I’m willing to risk damaging the cable.

PL-259 connector would be best as I already have some adapters to go from that
to my HT and that will work with the mobile rig.

I tried to see it and was not able to. I was able to see it early morning last
week at about 50 degrees.

The station sent is a repeater - it is not to contact the station itself but
will bounce traffic from us on earth that have line of sight (using the two
different frequencies)

I was able to hear traffic on the repeater several times just with my HT over a
month ago. However, my new base antenna and base station have been silent over
many tries in the past week (and my HT was silent tonight also). Either I am
doing something wrong now or it is off the air lately.

Love to see if anyone else has any more insight.

https://www.astroviewer.net/iss/en/index.php shows the path going right over us
in a little bit, currently east of Australia and rising for us, but I can’t get
it to give me a time over Houston.

agrees with the transit with a live view and they’re streaming youtube for the
SpaceX Dragon Crew-1 Commercial flight as well (been watching for a few hours).
https://www.amsat.org/status/ says someone heard them while the crew was active
a few days ago, though that’s not necessarily the repeater. I’m going to try
both simplex and repeater.

I’m pretty sure they’re coming overhead, I just don’t know if the radios will
be live. ARISS says they’re shutting the radios off on the 18th for some
flight stuff, but otherwise, I have no reason to believe it shouldn’t be a good
time tonight. I’m going to head outside. Happy hunting!!

I have no knowledge about repeater status but this is from tracker app I bought.

None was shown for tonight.

[BVARC] Newbie questions

2020-10-20 Thread Shannon Tassin via BVARC
Hi all,

Working to get my first radio setup and would appreciate some advice.

I have some existing RG-6 coax in the house that I ran when I built it from the
attic to rooms that has never been terminated or used. I just bought the TBJ-1
antenna from Ed Fong that someone here recommended recently. It has an SO-239
connector on it.

Is there a specific cable spec I need to buy to connect to the antenna? Is
there a certain resistance level?

Can I then connect that cable to my existing RG-6 coax and leverage that
existing RG-6 in the wall to the room where the radio is?

Do I need anything besides the right cable and adapters between my antenna and
radio (have a Yaesu 991A with built in antenna tuner on the way)?

Could I then use that setup to connect the antenna to either my 991A or my FT3D
HT (assuming the right adapters)?

Thanks much to all who have time to respond!

Take care,
Shannon K4SCT (previously KI5KTF)
