[BVARC] Newbie's first HF radio

2021-09-13 Thread cw3sting via BVARC
The FCC already has my upgrade to General in the database. Much thanks for the
excellent job by the VE's who gave me the exam and took care of the paperwork.

Now that I have more of the HF world open to me, I'm looking for advice on an
entry level (i.e. cheap) HF radio. I don't do CW, so my initial needs will be
voice and data.

My leaning is toward the MFJ-9420X, but I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks to all for the suggestions, offers, and info.

I have some thinking to do.

Hopefully, I can convince the wife to support my future decision.

I will suggest an antenna for HF (80 thru 6 meters).  I have the Buckmaster
OCF Dipole.  There are several models covering from 160 thru 6 meters, both
low and high power.  They are high quality, designed to last many years, so
are higher price than others.

If you decide to run more than 100 watts, I recommend an RF choke at both
ends of the feed line.  I run up to 1500 watts and have good results with
the Palomar Engineers Maxi-Choker MC-1-3000.

There are great major radios available for 300$ Range. When you get your
feet wet, then you’ll know what you like.

Add in a Signalink for digital.
Add in a mfj or other tuner.
Antenna is the most important piece.  Continually perfect them starting with
dipoles.

Randy;

This is the cable I got. It works on all four of the UV5R and BF8 HTs I've got:

I talked to Mike Harwick of BVARC, and he told me to practice programming in
freq's manually

before loading up a hundred repeaters through the software.

Will try the manual route for now and will explore all your suggestions when I
get that working.

Works just fine with my IC-2730 and Chirp (you can find that here
), takes about a
minute or two to program my 500+ channels (Including GMRS, FRS and Marine
freq). I wouldn't install whatever software comes with the cable though.
Your computer should recognize it as a serial device and then you just
pull it up in Chirp. Chirp has a nice feature where you can pull up all
the local repeaters by distance from your location, also other
standard frequencies are listed in there. I have attached my own Chirp
file if you want to use it. Channel 0 is 146.94, 1-22 are GMRS/FRS, the
rest are roughly in numerical order, Marine bands at the end (475 and
beyond). I didn't include the NOAA stations because the IC-2730 has those
as a built-in feature. I have really enjoyed the IC-2730 (so much so I
have 2), I hope this helps.

Re: [BVARC] UPS Issue

2022-07-15 Thread cw3sting via BVARC
My experience has been that UPS batteries seldom last longer than three years,
if that.

I usually get my batteries from Amazon. Go for the highest AH (amp hour)
rating you can for the suitable replacement. You will see some 7.5 AH, but you
probably want to go with 9 AH for longer runtime.

Tip: put a piece of tape with the replacement date on the outside of the case
so you will be prepared before the next pair fails.

Good luck.
