framework), just the one that suits your style, needs and the requirements
of the project that you're working on.

Amigo, it'd be easier for others to understand and help you with some
translation done for other before-hand. Most of the people here speak
English :) .

Google translate, ftw!

Good afternoon,

I would like to know how to do the following: I would like to paginate in
page 1 page for example only 10 elements, and in the pages
paged by following Example 15.

Briefly define the page depending on where we are,
the number of elements that must appear in the paginacio.

A greeting.

Re: Having PHP generate a PDF

2012-01-04 Thread Yves S. Garret
It does do the header and footers for me. The problem that I am running
into is that I do not see the title per column being set to show again on
every page. I am assuming that this is caused TCPDF is taking HTML code
and turning it into PDF, which is an inherent limitation in HTML in the
first place.

Having PHP generate a PDF

2012-01-03 Thread Yves S. Garret
Here is my problem. I would like to have PHP generate a PDF 8.5" x 11".
This is the rough format of the PDF:

http://bin.cakephp.org/view/2006656317

But here is the kicker, say that those columns that hold data are much
longer, say they span 2 pages. On the 2nd page, I would like to repeat the
Header, Title 1, Title 2 and Title 3. Can this be done dynamically and
programmatically? Does anyone have an example or a source that demonstrates
this?

Sample code would be very welcome :-) . A point in the right direction
would also be very appreciated.

This example is not CakePHP specific, but I would like some input on how to
do this. Any past experience that you would recommend? Can -- what I
described -- be done in CakePHP?

What's all this SQL being run when running a controller unit test plan?

2011-12-20 Thread Yves S. Garret
I am going through unit test portion of the cookbook (I am using CakePHP
1.3), I go to the test.php page and click on the controller link there and
wait...

Then I see a page displayed with a slew of SQL at the bottom, which I
copied to show below:
http://bin.cakephp.org/view/2008902189

Why is that SQL there? On what database is it being run? My application
connects to a MS-SQL database and that was untouched (was worried for a sec
there). Maybe I am getting ahead of myself, but could someone shed some
light on this?

Unit tests in CakePHP

2011-12-20 Thread Yves S. Garret
Hey guys, I'm embarking on writing some unit tests for a simple app. I
honestly don't know what I'm doing, but am looking at the following
resources as a start:

http://bakery.cakephp.org/articles/mariano/2007/04/13/testing-models-with-cakephp-1-2-test-suite
http://book.cakephp.org/view/1200/Testing-overview-Unit-testing-vs-Web-testing
http://debuggable.com/posts/unit-testing-in-cakephp-part-1---introduction-to-unit-testing:48102610-c5d0-4398-a010-76974834cda3

I'd like some input on whether these sources are a good start or if you
have something better out there (if you do, let me know). Some good
information on rules of thumb to keep in mind while writing unit-tests or
any habits that I should try to get into, I'd really appreciate.

Unable to use cake bake

2011-12-16 Thread Yves S. Garret
Ok, so moving past the basic blog tutorial and onto the ACL stuff. I
simply re-used the existing code where I already had all of my views,
controllers and models already made (build on top of what I had that
already works).

I get to the point where I run this command:
$ cake schema create DbAcl
The program 'cake' is currently not installed. You can install it by
typing:
sudo apt-get install cakephp-scripts

:(

Did I not setup CakePHP correctly? Did I need to set a path somewhere?

Re: How to add a "read" button to a view.ctp?

2011-12-08 Thread Yves S. Garret
lol, I completely overlooked the AJAX, was thinking of something I did.
 This is a portion of my code from a recent project.

echo $this->Form->create("AdmitLookupProviders", array('action' =>
'view_admit_lookup'));

echo "";
echo "Last Name";
echo $this->Form->input("last_name", array(
'label'  => false,
'class'  => 'input_style',
'div'=> false));
echo " ";
echo $this->Form->submit("Search", array(
 'class' => 'submit_style',
     'div'   => false));

I used $this->Form->submit(), not ajax.

Authentication design, would like feedback

2011-12-05 Thread Yves S. Garret
Hi all,

   I'm making an app that requires authentication. I would like some
feedback from you guys on the best approach. This is a stand-alone app,
what would be the better approach?

   1. ACL - Tried and true. Easy to implement and comprehend. The only
   downside is that it leaves out the LDAP that my employer has.
   2. LDAP - My company already has this ground-work done. The user names
   are already created. The only issue is that I'm don't know how LDAP works
   100% and then unsure how to integrate it.

Is the CakePHP book search not working?

2011-12-01 Thread Yves S. Garret
I'm working on trying to get LDAP to do authentication for my app. Having
a heck of a time...

I figured I'd at least give a cursory look at the book and see what I find
(I didn't expect anything to show up). I searched and found 7 - 9 results
right away!  Alright!

I click on the first and do a search for the string "ldap" and find
nothing. I move on to the next and find nothing. I go through all of the
examples and don't find a single instance of the string "ldap". None.
 Now, I can understand if there is no info in the book and the search
function returns nothing, but why show up a bunch of unrelated results?
 Seems like either it is a bug or not the best thought out search. Anyone
run into a similar issue?

P.S.: I did this with the 1.3 CakePHP book only, I have no idea about the
rest.

This is very odd. When I print out the contents of the table, the first
name and last name show up in the view. But the codes (3 of them) do not.
 On line 36 in the controller, if I print it out, all of the data is there.
 So is the provider variable not getting set correctly? On line 6 in the
view, the contents are not print out at all! Very confusing...

Not all data from MS-SQL gets into view

2011-11-23 Thread Yves S. Garret
Where you see the codes in the view, they do not get populated. However,
the first name and the last name do get populated. Not all of the rows
have an rih_code, has_code or mir_code, but they have at least one in each
column (they can be NULL after all). What could cause some of the values
to not be populated?

My controller:

Re: IE hangs when loading a page

2011-11-17 Thread Yves S. Garret
Maybe, I just put that string in and it displays fine. A close tag is
unlikely, it would just give me a weird layout.

Never mind, I'm good guys. Figured it out. The issue seems to be on line
230 in the cake.generic.css file:

margin-right: 20px;

After some debugging by commenting out and back, that was the line that
caused IE 9 to hang. Would this be a bug in the distro code for CakePHP
1.3?

Re: IE hangs when loading a page

2011-11-17 Thread Yves S. Garret
Can't. There are security concerns with this approach.

However, I've narrowed the problem down to CSS. It's weird. I changed the
name of the CSS file that I should include in default.ctp and -- albeit
ugly -- my page showed up.

I took the default CSS file from CakePHP 1.3 and included it and IE 9
doesn't like it... odd.

For convenience, this is the file:

Re: IE hangs when loading a page

2011-11-16 Thread Yves S. Garret
Ok, I was doing some more debugging and this is what I've uncovered, the
problem seems to be in the view.

http://bin.cakephp.org/view/1582319117   < my code

I commented out lines 14 to 22 and the page loads. I click on the links
and the desired results are displayed.

Wat? Is there a reason why this would stop working in IE 9? Anyone
observed this elsewhere? Should I just make HTML textboxes and buttons in
place of the CakePHP stuff?

Now, I can understand that $provider is undefined. It shouldn't be.
 That's what the empty method is checking for, right?

Next I proceeded to add this code to view_admit_lookup in the controller:

$this->set('provider', NULL);

How the code looks like now.

I figured that by setting provider to nothing pre-emptively it would get
rid of the issue that I had... but IE 9 is still not loading...

Gonna go to the gym, I need to give my brain a rest and my body some work.

Oh yeah, one more thing, this is what I did with developer tools for IE
(this problem exists for IE 9 as well):

* Opened up my browser, which went to my homepage, bing.com.
* Opened up Developer Tools by hitting F12.
* Entered the URL of the site I'm working on and hit Enter.
* The Developer Tools window vanished and I get a blank page without as
much as an indication of what could possible be wrong.

I did notice a torn document icon in the URL bar.

Re: IE hangs when loading a page

2011-11-15 Thread Yves S. Garret
Tried it, the dev tools hung with IE when I ran it and looked at the script
tab lol.

I'll keep poking at it. I've never seen this before...

IE hangs when loading a page

2011-11-15 Thread Yves S. Garret
I know that this is IE only, since I tried it in Chrome and it worked.
 Basically, I go to the page that I'm developing and the browser just
hangs. Very weird. In Chrome, it loads without an issue. Has anyone seen
IE do this before? How did you get around it?

I can post the code if you want, but not sure just how much value that has
since it works just fine in one browser, but not the other.

Re: Info on manipulating layout in CakePHP

2011-11-11 Thread Yves S. Garret
Where did you get that? I'll need to finagle with this thing for a while
to get it right.

What it does now is simply put the input and button one on top of the other
(they should be side-by-side). The links (which I neglected to show in
this case) are not on their own line.

Re: Info on manipulating layout in CakePHP

2011-11-11 Thread Yves S. Garret
I want to have it right next to the text box. I tried creating a class in
my CSS that would do that, but as you can see, there is another outer div
around the previous div. I'm sure that one can dictate how the outer div
is created (if at all), I just don't know where to look in order to make
that happen.

Info on manipulating layout in CakePHP

2011-11-11 Thread Yves S. Garret
I go this tid-bit and it works. But I would love to tweek this layout so
that everything aligns just the way I want to.

echo $this->Form->create("Provider", array('action' =>
'view_admit_lookup'));
echo $this->Form->input("last_name", array(
'label'  => 'Doctor Last Name',
'class'  => 'input_style'));
echo $this->Form->submit("Search", array(
 'class' => 'submit_style'));

The above generates this code:

Doctor Last Name

The 2nd div I could do without. Any pointers? The book doesn't seem to
have a section dedicated to this, data-mining google for the moment.

Re: CSS not displaying Form elements correctly

2011-11-10 Thread Yves S. Garret
I've done some reading around about CSS and how it could be applied.

This is my view:
http://bin.cakephp.org/view/1233273546
This is the CSS file:
http://bin.cakephp.org/view/1264404759

On line 360 in the CSS file, I'm trying to create a border around the links
that I'm creating on line 19 in my view... what am I not setting correctly?

Yup, it's right here.

Where is the one for 1.3 and 2.0?

amykhar, you're better off using the old one as a template and building on
top of that for 2.0

Re: CSS not displaying Form elements correctly

2011-11-08 Thread Yves S. Garret
But... the only thing that I did was remove pagination and tried to add a
bunch of buttons. Should I include more files?

app\
  controllers\
providers_controller.php [ http://bin.cakephp.org/view/1461038734 ]
  models\
provider.php [ http://bin.cakephp.org/view/39326804 ]
  views\
providers\
  view_admit_lookup.ctp [ http://bin.cakephp.org/view/848065756 ]

I've also noticed that the start of my CSS file, I have this:
* {
margin:0;
padding:0;
}

Should I have a "*" in front of the open bracket?

That large button is the original search button created by this:
echo $this->Form->submit('Search');

It used to be quite small, green with black text in the middle stating just
"Search".

Re: Trying to re-use a method in the controller by different inputs/buttons in the view

2011-11-08 Thread Yves S. Garret
I'm not following. $letters has just the names of the buttons and their
identification (can't really word this any better, basically the idea is
that once I click on a link/button, the identity of that button gets passed
to the controller and it does something specific for it).

It would seem $widgets and $letter are the same... then why not just use
$letter?

know, that sounds weird. I turned on Google Developer Tools in Chrome and
it seems to be loading. I just don't understand why the originally green
search button is now the regular button... and very wide...

Trying to re-use a method in the controller by different inputs/buttons in the view

2011-11-08 Thread Yves S. Garret
Before I even go on, here is what I have:

View:
http://bin.cakephp.org/view/404159005
Controller:
http://bin.cakephp.org/view/21698870

The idea that I'm trying to do is have a row of buttons spanning the
alphabet. The user clicks on the button and then it lists all of the
people with their last name starting with the specific letter. This is a
requirement, yes, I know, you can just type in 'R' and hit Enter and the
same thing will be done, no, this did not please powers-that-be. Moving
on...

I didn't want to create a function for _every_ button. That seemed painful
and just bad coding. I would like to call that method and then pass in a
value (in this case, a string of one length) and the method will perform a
specific function based on the input. I tried this line of code:
echo $this->Form->button($letter, array('action' => 'view_admit_lookup'));

I did some digging online:
http://book.cakephp.org/view/1415/button
http://api.cakephp.org/file/cake/libs/view/helpers/form.php#method-FormHelperbutton

I couldn't find anything that would do this for me easily. Am I missing
something? Did I look into the wrong docs?

Thanks for the tip about the center tag. I've removed it. I put a where the center tag was.

CSS not displaying Form elements correctly

2011-11-07 Thread Yves S. Garret
This issue is in my view, when I made the following code:

Form->create("Provider", array('action' =>
'view_admit_lookup'));
echo $this->Form->input("last_name", array('label' => 'Doctor Last
Name'));
echo $this->Form->submit('Search');
echo $this->Form->end();
?>

The usually green default Search button is a generic button as you would
make it if it were in pure HTML. I haven't changed my CSS file since I've
seen it work. Not sure why it's doing this.

Here is the controller just in-case (if it helps):

Re: Implementing a search functionality

2011-11-01 Thread Yves S. Garret
Ok, this is weird. It does pagination, which is good. The problem arises
is that when I run the search, after it it runs again, for all of the names
in the DB... on the first page the search results are displayed, but on the
next, the rest of the data is displayed! Does pagination run some other
search in the background or after the fact? This is weird, please help out.

Re: Implementing a search functionality

2011-11-01 Thread Yves S. Garret
Ok, as I have it works. Yay!

The thing that was tripping me up was that the pagination ran _after_ the
search.

This is how view_admit_lookup is now.

function view_admit_lookup() {
$this->helpers['Paginator'] = array('ajax' => 'ajax');
// provide pagination for the user.
$this->set('provider', $this->paginate());

// here we begin searching for whatever we need.
if(!empty($this->data['Provider']['last_name'])) {
$this->set('provider', $this->Provider->find('all',

array('conditions' =>
array(

'Provider.last_name LIKE' => $this->data['Provider']['last_name'].'%';
}

// set the title and the default layout.
$this->set('title_for_layout', 'Admit Lookup');
$this->layout = 'default';
}

Why the brackets/single-quotes around tables and columns?

2011-11-01 Thread Yves S. Garret
I'm connecting to an MS-SQL database. And, although I can't show you the
tables and exact columns (I can show you something similar), I've noticed
the following output at the bottom of my page.

SELECT [Post].[id], [Post].[title], [Post].[body], [Post].[created],
[Post].[modified] FROM [posts] AS [Post] WHERE 1 = 1

Why the brackets?

When I'm connecting to a MySQL database, I get single-quotes.

SELECT `Post`.`id`, `Post`.`title`, `Post`.`body`, `Post`.`created`,
`Post`.`modified` FROM `posts` AS `Post` WHERE 1 = 1

Why the single quotes for a MySQL DB?

I got a pet peeve about being 'lazy' :-) . Too often it leaves vague code

Why specify the controller in the view?

2011-10-31 Thread Yves S. Garret
I just noticed this in the cakephp book. In the first example, you have
the following line(s) in index.ctp:

http://book.cakephp.org/view/1536/Creating-Post-Views

Html->link($post['Post']['title'], array('controller' =>
'posts', 'action' => 'view', $post['Post']['id'])); ?> <--- this is the
first example of a view

http://book.cakephp.org/view/1540/Editing-Posts

Html->link($post['Post']['title'], array('action' =>
'view', $post['Post']['id']));?> <--- this is a later example, when you're
editing the post.

The question is about this line: 'controller' => 'posts' <--- this doesn't
seem to affect the way info is posted. index.ctp is already tied to the
index method in the PostsController, so what role does this play?

Validation is done, where?

2011-10-31 Thread Yves S. Garret
Was going through the book and noticed the last sentence on the web-page:

http://book.cakephp.org/view/1537/Adding-Posts

I noticed this part:

Calling the save() method will check for validation errors and abort the
save if any occur. We'll discuss how those errors are handled in the
following sections.

Where is this take care of, server side?

Re: Having a hard time with getting overwrite to work

2011-10-28 Thread Yves S. Garret
Ok, so nuking CakePHP from htdocs in XAMPP and putting in a new one made
everything work... I have no idea why, but it's good now.

sudo a2enmod rewrite

Was that on line 350? If so, I just tried that and it didn't work. Yes, I
restarted apache after making the change.

But there is still no CSS in the default cake page. I looked at what the

Yes, they're wrong. But being new I was sure how correct/incorrect my

the said file names).

This is what I have setup now:

app\

Re: Implementing a search functionality

2011-10-25 Thread Yves S. Garret
Thanks, this is the structure of my directory tree, tell me if I need to
re-name anything:

app\
  controllers\
  models\
  views\
providers\

Should I rename the providers directory to provider?

Yup. CakePHP 1.3. The view is in
\app\views\providers\view_admit_lookup.ctp

The controller file name is providers_controller.php. I added the variable
that you suggested to the model file (which is called Provider.php) and I
get the same error :-( .

Re: Implementing a search functionality

2011-10-24 Thread Yves S. Garret
Ok, this is weird.

I found this tutorial on doing searches.
http://mrphp.com.au/code/search-forms-cakephp

That's good. Now, this is my Model:
http://bin.cakephp.org/view/1495255597
View:
http://bin.cakephp.org/view/814828491
Controller:
http://bin.cakephp.org/view/1212386780

Now, when I run the search based on someone, I get something like this:
Missing Controller

*Error: **ProvidersController* could not be found.

*Error: *Create the class *ProvidersController* below in file:
app\controllers\providers_controller.php

*Notice: *If you want to customize this error message, create
app\views\errors\missing_controller.ctp
Now, I don't have Providers, I have Provider (singular only), so where is it
getting the plural from?

Re: Can't change color of rows in table?

2011-10-24 Thread Yves S. Garret
Call me dense, but how would I do that? The main loop goes through the
different rows and assigns something to them. Do something like this in a
view?

 $prov): ?>

Re: Can't get mod_rewrite to work correctly

2011-10-23 Thread Yves S. Garret
Yes, that's what I did. I went to localhost and then saw that I had in the
error logs.

The error logs _should_ be located in /opt/lampp/logs/error_log, if someone
knows of a different location, do tell.

Re: Can't get mod_rewrite to work correctly

2011-10-23 Thread Yves S. Garret
This is access.log:
http://bin.cakephp.org/view/1723490922
This is the error.log:
http://bin.cakephp.org/view/2069712484

The thing is, with the error.log, it shows only the issues that cropped up
*yesterday*, not today. The latest and greatest updates happened in the
access.log.

I looked in /opt/lampp/opt (I'm running xampp). Should I look elsewhere?

Re: Can't get mod_rewrite to work correctly

2011-10-22 Thread Yves S. Garret
Yeah, that was pretty silly. I blame that on being up so long :-)

Now I got this error just by going to localhost, same as going to
localhost/cakery (where I put cake).

Bad Request

Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.

Additionally, a 400 Bad Request error was encountered while trying to use an
ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/2.2.21 (Unix) DAV/2 mod_ssl/2.2.21 OpenSSL/1.0.0c PHP/5.3.8
mod_apreq2-20090110/2.7.1 mod_perl/2.0.5 Perl/v5.10.1 Server at localhost
Port 80
