I agree knowing what the dataset is for might help with the answer. I don't
know but I would have thought Units of Measurement are set per Country rather
than by City?

Re: Hello i need help in database schema ready

2012-09-27 Thread Jonathan Sundquist
I guess I question what you would like this data set for. Looking at this
from a large scale of the United States I know there are a number of city
names that are duplicated across multiple states. Now I don't know if this
is the same across the rest of the world but you may need to rethink what
you are looking to implement. You may need to set up your relational table
from countries to states/province to cities.

Also a quick search of Google reveals this page.
http://www.maxmind.com/app/worldcities which can be found on this thread

Re: Hello i need help in database schema ready

2012-09-27 Thread Jonathan Sundquist
I don't know how likely you will find a country and all cities within each
specific country. You are more likely to find database schemas out there
that give you countries with all related states/provinces within.

You aren't in your app dir - you don't ordinarily run cake _in_ the Console
dir:

cd ..
Console/cake

Ensure the Hello shell is listed before calling it.

I doubt that Cake's JSHelper will be much use to you if you don't know
Javascript itself. The helper is meant to take care of certain JS
functionality, sure, but without understanding how JS itself works,
I'm afraid you won't get very far. Sorry to be so pessimistic.

1. Read through the cookbook (a few times)

2. Follow the tutorials at the end of it

3. Try your own coding and ask for help on specific problems as you

Re: expiration date page (was- Fwd: Hello Sir)

2010-02-09 Thread Céryl
I;m not really sure about the exact mechanics you'd like, but you can
probably set the view so that it changes according to the date:

set('layout', "christmas");
} elseif ((date("Y-m-d") < date("2010-08-01") && (date("Y-m-d") >
date("2010-06-01"))) {
   $this->set('layout', "summer");
}
 and then in the view:
echo $this->renderElement($layout);

Just two ideas from the top of my head.

Re: Setting up Cakephp - hello world?

2010-01-29 Thread Daniel S. Reichenbach
Hi,

the general installation manual is here:
http://book.cakephp.org/view/32/Installation

> The cake php framework is place in a shared folder in the server.
> Under the developer folder is the application.

Cakephp comes with an app/ folder, which basically *is* the hello
world application you are looking for.

Things start in app/webroot/index.php. You'll notice a lot of defines
for paths. This is probably what you have to modify depending on you
specific configuration. This is e.g. where you can point to a
different location for the cake/ folder.

app/webroot/ should be your Apache DocumentRoot for a start.

If you can be more specific about your setup, there's more hints to
come :)

WkR,
Daniel

Re: hello cake lovers

2008-10-03 Thread Novice Programmer
I am also getting the same problem. I want to paginate the search results
in a fashion that the search url can be bookmarked. but i am not able to do
so. The problem being that when the query is a get string, the submission to
the searches controller looks like
http://x.com/searches/index?q=mystring
but i am not able to do the pagination. Mainly because i am not able to
fetch q part on the second parameter. So the problem revolves around:

1. Fetching the get query string.
2. Pass it as url to the paginator->numbers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

hello cake lovers

2008-10-03 Thread harry

till now what i've made is a searches controller. this controller is
ment to search either a user or an entity in the database.
the first line of my index action is
function index($searchby = 'entity')
this funct works fine if i have to search for an entity, but when i
search for a user it shows me nothin
///ly when i change the funct index to
function index($searchby = 'user')
i can search users from db but not content.
i consider it to be a problem in routing, but i can change the url
from the view part easily.
the problem which i am facing is that when i enter something in the
searchbar the url changes to:
http://localhost/searches/index?search=linkin

and the url which i want to work on is:
 /searches/index/entity and
/searches/index/user
can any one help me out with it

I agree that the Email component should solve the majority of the
needs and I think based on certain server configurations, it does. It
can send out emails using PHP's mail implementation or using SMTP with
certain server configurations. I do think the Email component needs to
be more robust on how it handles EHLO, HELO, especially for AUTH
handling. Beyond that, support for SIZE would be nice. PIPELINING is a
special case, in my opinion, that can wait or be left for third party
components to solve (which is what SwiftMailer likely uses).

I can set up enhancement tickets for these requests.

There are a lot of other classes available and I am certainly not
against using them. But since we have the component in the core, it's
not going anywhere, and we are not going to include 3rd party
libraries, can we do something to match those features without
bloating Cake. My goal is for the Email component to solve the
majority of the needs. For example, not everyone needs to send 10,000
emails per second. So, maybe this thread is more about an edge case
and I should just move on :)

I would disagree with your assessment of the conversation.

We're debating two key issues:

1. The quality and features of the email component as it stands today; and
2. Whether the CakePHP development team should be "reinventing the
wheel" or whether certain components truly should be part of the core.

Neither of these debates is about "taking vs giving".

Re: 503 5.5.2 Send hello first (email component)

2008-06-12 Thread BrendonKoz

I personally didn't mean any ill-will. When I first learned about
CakePHP, version 1.1 was the only option. I intended to use Cake in
the future. In the mean time, I knew I'd need to use email (as
Jonothan Snook already stated) and the vendor() function (of 1.1)
would have worked flawlessly for what I needed (in theory as I
pondered how I could use Cake). I saw no need for an internal library
to do an action when I could simply import another class for what was
needed. If one solution already existed within Cake, would I use it?
It depends...it depends on what functionality it had and what I
needed. I don't mean to say that if something needed fixing and I was
capable to do it that I wouldn't help, but in open source projects,
that assistance usually comes about during personal need of which in
this specific case (email), I just don't (personally) see the need.

I also COMPLETELY disagree with the suggestion of packaging any third
party tools within Cake. This is where I would agree with Gwoo: if
you think it's necessary and want something just as feature rich
included within Cake, build on what's already there and submit back to
the Cake project to see if it will be included in a future version
(such as the Containable + Bindable solution) to help others as others
have helped you.

I have to say this thread is a little disappointing. Not because it
takes a direct stab at knocking the code in the core, but rather that
it shows a spirit that is more about "taking" than it is about
"giving". I will never be ashamed to admit that something inside of

perfection. I realize you all have applications to build...I do to.
This project is open source, where we can all benefit from the
collective efforts to improve something. You help improve the
EmailComponent today and tomorrow someone else can help improve
another aspect of the framework. By taking the "easy" way out, the
problem persists, more people are unable to work on new code, and
progress is left up to a small team of dedicated developers. This same
small team who has already provided over 1 million dollars (see Ohloh)
worth of code. Anyway, hopefully we can see people who "think" a
little about what it means to use open source software.

I understand why you were frustrated. I, too, have been frustrated by
the component. With that said, I think an email component is something
that does need to be in the core and look forward to seeing the
component expand into a more robust solution. I think that an email
component should be in there because it is such a common task when it
comes to building web applications. To have to import third party
libraries, it's an extra step of integration that users will commonly
have to do, and documenting that process will be more difficult.

Hi Stephen,

phpMailer and SwiftMail are both LGPL and ZF is Open BSD, so I don't
think it's really an issue for most users.

In any case, if licensing was the problem, why not put a clear
'alert' label on the Cake component informing everyone that it only
really exists for licensing reasons. The majority of us wouldn't then
waste any time.

I suppose the book is being fair when it says "There is a lot that it
doesn't do for you but it will get you started." Hmm, more like get
you frustrated and ready to move on to a fully-featured working
library. I will propose a 'diplomatic' amendment to the book.

Re: 503 5.5.2 Send hello first (email component)

2008-06-12 Thread Stephen Orr

I think the thinking is that, by not including external solutions
wherever possible, it keeps the licensing clean, making it easier for
bigger companies to adopt for their own projects. The trouble with
including most external libraries is that they're GPLed, which tends
to mean that the entire source code to the application needs to be
released under GPL as well. The MIT license Cake is released under is
just a little more friendly...

SwiftMailer is good though!

By the way, Zend have similar rules with the Zend Framework libraries.

2008-06-11 Thread villas

Same here. I struggled with the Cake component but then put my trusty
phpMailer in vendors and bingo, my emails were soon flying again.

I now cannot see the point in Cake developers spending their time on
this Email component when there are such robust, fully-featured
solutions available to be 'wrapped'. It goes completely against the
DRY principle. How on earth are they expecting to write, update and
support anything better than phpMailer or SwiftMailer?

Sorry about the rant, but I hope the Team will review the real point
of this component. And, when they do, I hope the conclusion isn't,
"Other email libraries are just as good and better, but they weren't
invented here". Once the Team goes down that route, we'll next be
having a homegrown Cake alternative to JQuery.

use it where and when you can.)

503 5.5.2 Send hello first (email component)

2008-06-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi All

I am trying to use the new email component in cake 1.2, but am having
problems using it with an authenticated SMTP server. I am getting the
following error:
503 5.5.2 Send hello first

How would I send the Hello using the component? FYI I can use Pear's
email script on the same SMTP server with the same credentials, so
that side of it definitely works.

Any help would be gratefully received. My test code is below.

Ian

$this->Email->to = "[EMAIL PROTECTED]";
$this->Email->subject = 'test email';
$this->Email->from = 'Address <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>';
$this->Email->template = 'default';
$this->Email->sendAs = 'text';
$this->Email->smtpOptions = array(
'port'=>'25',
'timeout'=>'30',
'host' => 'mail.x.com',
'username'=>'',
'password'=>'');
$this->Email->delivery = 'smtp';
$this->Email->send("testing");

i had to read cakePHP manual before.
my question, how to setting in order to be able i can make many
different app in my document root?
i save all of my web app in D:\tohtdoc s
i try to put cakephplib in D:\htdoc\cakephplib and the app outside
cakephplib. that's just look like this D:\tohtdocs\mycakeapp1, D:
\tohtdocs\mycakeapp2 and more...

i moved out the app directory from cakephplib directory. and rename
app directory to myblog/
and i change the configuration of index.php inside myblog/webroot

Got both the blog tutorial and the hello world tutorials working. Did
them "by the book" and they worked.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Re: Hello, World in CakePHP

you are trying to access the file directly.
You url should be something like http://localhost/cake/hello
This assumes that you have mod_rewrite working.
Otherwise you can uncomment BASE_URL around line 40 in /app/config/
core.php
then access like http://localhost/cake/index.php/hello

Re: Hello, World in CakePHP

2007-03-16 Thread Saganxis

Please i need help

I 'm new at cake, but i've been reading a lot of this framework.
But...i cannot even run the "Hello word" example.
My environment is CakePHP 1.1.13.4450, PHP 5. I've red the
installation notes at the home site but i can't make it work.
I tryed the Heeloo word example and when i access to http://. /
cake/app/views/hello just apear the file like plain text.

It seems like apache doesn't recognize the file, i really don't know.

Has anybody knows what the problem is??

Sorry for my english..

Re: Hello, World in CakePHP

2007-03-16 Thread Falagar

Hi,

the hello world example is probably easier to if if you just create
your 'hello' view in /app/views/pages/home.thtml (for 1.1 for 1.2
hello.ctp).

and then you call:

http://192.168.2.3/cake/app/pages/hello.

But Chris is right of course, you can also just follow the messages,
they will lead you to where you want to go.

The advantage with using the pages controller is that the controller
is already written for you, so you don't need to worry about writing
the views controller.

alert the url!
http://192.168.2.3/cake/hello

Print in screen: "Hello word!"

See blog documentation ;)

I've found that the error messages that Cake spits out in debug mode
are the best way to learn how to actually put together a Cake app.
Those errors tell you what files you are missing. Follow the
instructions in the messages until they error messages all go away.

Trust me on this one.

Hello, World in CakePHP

2007-03-16 Thread peterhf

I am unable to get even the simplest tutorial to work! Not even
"Hello, World"!

http://www.nospace.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=64&Itemid=36&lang=en

My environment is CakePHP 1.1.13.4450, PHP 4.4.4 on an iMac OS 10.4.8.
The Cake framework
is located in ... /WebServer/Documents/cake/. When I enter
http://192.168.2.3/cake/app/views/hello
the following message appears: (n part)

Fatal: Create the class below in file : app/controllers/
views_controller.php

If the above file is created another message appears chasing after
some other file!

Thanks in advance for any help.
