A week has gone by after the svn migration and still the platform and
product builds in Bamboo are badly breaking.

We cannot really release Carbon kernel end of March with builds failing at
this rate, end of Feb.

This got to be fixed. Now!

[Carbon-dev] More tasks around recent svn re-structure

2012-02-26 Thread Samisa Abeysinghe
1. Get the build to work 100%. Build is still broken at platform and
product levels
All efforts put in last December and this Jan seems to be in vain as
the builds are badly broken. The trunk got to build ALL time. This
structuring has taken a week and the week has gone by AFTER the
re-structure and all this time build has been in a broken state.
I can feel the pain as I cannot build a new Jaggery pack due to this.
I am not sure how other 50+ folks working on code are dealing with this.

2. Get Sonar to point to new builds this new structure. See if we have to
re-structure Sonar
Sonar system still shows 600+ critical and 13K Major issues. And we
need to fix them and to do that, we need Sonar to be reliable and stable
with the new structure.

3. Get Crucible to point to new structure. See if we have to re-structure
Crucible
We need Crucible to reflect the latest code structure ASAP to move on
with code reviews.

It seems like we need another round of a Hackathon to fix all these. Given
the time it has taken to already and given the levels of problems, it is
worth an investment to get whichever number of people and fix all these
ASAP.

Thanks,
Samisa...

We can try and roll out support for level 3 templates with the next major

2012-02-26 Thread Hiranya Jayathilaka
BTW Prabath, ideally we should be able to implement your use case using the
URL mapping /library/books/*. This should accept all URLs (with all
combinations of query params) you're interested in. But this didn't work in
the first cut implementation I did. I myself came across this scenario
while working on samples so I've fixed it in Synapse trunk. So if you're
using the latest Synapse core source from the Apache trunk, above URL
mapping is all you want to make this scenario work. You can access query
params using the XPath query.param.{paramName}

+1. The platform and product build was broken over the last week. But I
could build Carbon Kenel, Platform successfully last Friday. And also I
could build all the product without the integration tests. Yes. That means
build is still broken. We will update this list on the progress of the
builds by EOD Tomorrow.

On a side note. Most ( I said most, because there were some failures due to
developer mistakes) of these build brakes happens because of the following
two changes.

1) SVN Restructuring.
2) Tomcat Ossification changes.

I guess, build brakes due to former are all fixed by now. But latter is a
platform-wide change. We basically changes carbon up side down IMHO. This
change affected the following areas.

* Carbon server initialization
   - Carbon is no longer a Webapp. I.e, Carbon does not run inside an
embedded tomcat instance.
   - Carbon is pure OSGi runtime and Tomcat is a bundle in this runtime.
* The way we create and start Tomcat Connectors.
   - Hence the port offset mechanism was broken.
* Graceful restart.
* There are lots of changes when it comes to class loading patterns.
* Most of the jars in CARBON_HOME/lib have be moved to the plugins dir as
bundles. We've added some new orbit bundles.

We had a review of this last Thursday. All of the above tasks were
completed, except the port offset issue. Pradeep was looking into it.

Now most of the issues we are facing is at the integration test layer.
Because of these changes, we had to update the components, products builds
and integration tests.

Anyway we should have completed this task last Friday. As I said earlier,
we will update this thread with the progress of the builds.

Thanks,
Sameera.

BTW what is our plan for iterative improvements?

Re: [Carbon-dev] [Architecture] Improvement: UI for ntask component

2012-02-26 Thread Anjana Fernando
+1 .. As you mentioned, we can create a generic UI for start/stop/status
functionality, so task based implementations can use the generic UI rather
than always creating that part from scratch. Then we've to come up with
some convention to link a specific task type to the context specific UI.
The concept of task type is already there in ntask, so just have to do
the mapping.

Cheers,
Anjana.

On Fri, Feb 24, 2012 at 11:42 PM, Senaka Fernando sen...@wso2.com wrote:

 Hi Tharindu,

In effect yes. That's pretty much what's generic when it comes to tasks.
Something analogous (to a certain extent) would be the Windows Task manager
(the generic bit) compared with something like the Wrapper that we use to
start Carbon as a background process (the context-specific bit).

 Thanks,
 Senaka.

 Hi Tharindu,

Well, there is a slight relevance, and hence this e-mail. Take the
service UI for example. Multiple products publish multiple kinds of
services which have different semantics, but utilize a single UI. And,
another example is a situation as in G-Reg. There can be multiple types of
tasks that may get scheduled even in a single product. I'm not suggesting a
100% generic UI, but I'm trying to understand the best solution to this
situation. While we can write our own thing is an easy answer. How can I
manage, understand and correlate all my tasks is definitely going to be a
question to a user in the long run.

 Thanks,
 Senaka.

BAM will also use ntask quite soon, and what you say applies. The
context of a task varies greatly.

So having a generic UI has no meaning if the context of tasks are
 different, does it?

On Fri, Feb 24, 2012 at 9:29 PM, Senaka Fernando sen...@wso2.comwrote:

  Hi all,

The ntask component, done by Anjana, is very useful to schedule any
type of task based on Quartz. I got G-Reg to use this, and (except for
exception handling which is totally not useful, :-)..) it is great. But,
DSS which is the only other product apart from the next release of G-Reg
which uses ntask has its own UI. G-Reg and any other product starting to
use ntask would love to have a UI to manage it, and a UI-per product is
definitely of least use. The proposal I'm making here is to drop the
existing DSS task scheduling UI and design a new one based on ntask, that
is generic such that more than one product can make use of it.

But, there is a slight catch here because task scheduling can have a
different meaning from product to product. In DSS the use-case is DSS
invocation. In G-Reg some usecases are report generation and
change/lifecycle management. So, a proposal from Isabelle was to create a
generic task thing and link the context sensitive scheduling interfaces
(i.e. the Reporting UI that we are planning for G-Reg) with that.

 Your feedback is most appreciated.

 Thanks,
 Senaka.

it remain broken still, all read. Fix it, and get it all green.

 Hi,

I would like to do $subject. Then replace it with YAJSW -
 http://yajsw.sourceforge.net/

YAJSW works well in both Linux and Windows (32 and 64bit). This takes
about 20MB of space to ship. The bare essential libs comes to about 15MB.

Removing the libs required for existing wrapper should save some space. So
effectively adding this won't increase the size by 20 MBs, isn't it?

Thanks,
Thilina

Re: [Carbon-dev] Running a cron scheduler job in Carbon

Hi Amila/Senaka,

Thank you for the input. Will use ntask implementation. A pointer to a code
sample would be helpful.

Thanks and regards,

 Hi all,

Please use the ntask implementation. I tried it out for G-Reg and it is
fairly easy to use. I'm still in progress with that work, and I should be
able to share a concrete example of how to use it by next Monday.

 Thanks,
 Senaka.

 Hi All,

We are going to add a configuration parameter to the human task
implementation to clean up the task instances which are in a final state
(i.e Completed, Failed etc). For this, we thought of adding a cron
expression to define the frequency of the clean up job. Is there a standard
way we could run a cron job in Carbon? Or is it ok to use quartz
 CronTrigger[1] to achieve this ?

We were using synapse scheduled task for this. It uses quartz and
supports the cron string too. But now we have a new ntask implementation
also. We can use that one too. ntask feature is used in DSS latest release
 AFAIK.

 AmilaM.

Yeah 20MB is bit of a concern. Btw, we had an offline discussion with
Azeez and decided to remove Java Service Wrapper.

Shall we go ahead with nohup thing?

Then the only issues is monitoring the JVM instances. But As we do in SLine
we can instruct users to us monitoring tools.

Thanks,
Sameera.

JSW is very small 'cos it's all native code called through JNI. This amount
to couple of MBs. So still this adds like extra 18 MB.

Nohup works ok in Linux. Problem is running it as a service in Windows.

For Windows, may be we can point to an OT article about how to download
YAJSW and install/configure it as a service?
