I was having trouble adding photos on my computer one evening. Later I tried using my iPad and it was easy! It makes me wonder if many people are having trouble. I often see reports that say photos but when you click on the report there are NO photos posted. ?? ? Dawn at Knox-Marsellus was beautiful and cold. The marsh was full of birds but it was too dark to identify much. (An hour later when the first NYSOA trip came through it was almost empty.) An American Bittern flew over the marsh. There were 6 or more Sandhill Cranes. It was sunny here this afternoon so I decided to try again to find a Cackling Goose. I succeeded because I've spent a lot of time search and because I dared to drive down the muddy towpath which is also full of potholes.Notes: The Cackling Goose was much smaller than the Canada Geese and it had a very small bill. Its chest was darker than the Canada Goose. When I looked at some photos I saw 2 smaller geese and one had a lighter breast so I think there were 2 Cackling Geese. For National Wildlife Refuge Week the dike at Tschache Pool was open for a walk which Bob Guthrie and I led Sunday 10/18/09. We walked out just to the turn and this got us close enough that everyone in the group got a good look at the Eurasian Wigeon. The other 3 started out at Stewart Park waiting for me then we left as soon as I arrived, so I know little of what was there, except that there was one distant COMMON LOON and, as reported, many PIED-BILLED GREBES, though not nearly as many as Saturday and Friday. We went to Myers Point where we did not refind yesterday's Sanderling or Cackling Goose, but did find 10 DUNLIN, 2 KILLDEER, several GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and a hybrid MALLARD x AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, plus the usual gulls, geese, ducks & cormorants. We then went to Freese Road where we birded with Bill Baker & Stuart Krasnoff. We did not refind yesterday's Orange-crowned Warbler or Vesper Sparrow, but did see numerous WHITE-CROWNED, SONG, and (some confusing) CHIPPING SPARROWS plus a few WHITE-THROATED, SWAMP, and one possible LINCOLN'S which Ann saw. There were also a flock each of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, CEDAR WAXWINGS, HOUSE FINCHES, and AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES. On our way we stopped on Benson Road where we found a flock of ~30 DARK-EYED JUNCOS in a roadside hedgerow and a flock of ~20 KILLDEER in a distant harvested field. We four then went north toward Montezuma, on the way encountering Tim Lenz, Mike Harvey, and Shawn Billerman, and we crossed paths several times into the afternoon. Long Point had very few birds on the lake for us: 4 COMMON LOONS, 4 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 2 MALLARDS, 2 RING-BILLED GULLS, and a few very distant CANADA GEESE. There were gulls and geese at the mouth of Paine's Creek at the south edge of Aurora, but we did not stop because we heard they had been scanned and were the usuals with a few SNOW GEESE. The breakwater at Castelli's Marina in Union Springs appeared to have only RING-BILLED GULLS. The pond at the Montezuma NWR Visitors' Center had many CANADA GEESE (no Bar-headed, etc.), NORTHERN SHOVELERS, NORTHERN PINTAIL, and GREEN-WINGED TEAL. There were also 30+ DUNLIN, 1 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 2 sleeping LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS (Thanks, Shawn!) and 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS. We first heard and then saw a distant calling flying group of 5 SANDHILL CRANES which landed and disappeared in the marsh near the caretaker's house on NYS 89. We missed a reported Western Sandpiper, Stilt Sandpiper and Pectoral Sandpiper. Larue's is still overgrown and appears to lack water. The Main Pool has water, but the smartweed is still so tall and dense as to make viewing difficult except in the distance where there were many CANADA GEESE and one sleeping probably SWAN, and along the channel by the drive, which had several GADWALL, AMERICAN COOT, and a RUDDY DUCK. Beyond the Main Pool we saw ~6 TREE SWALLOWS overhead and a GREAT BLUE HERON beside a channel. Bennings had CANADA GEESE, MALLARDS, and NORTHERN PINTAIL in some distant unobscured water. Tschache had many distant AMERICAN WIGEON and one male EURASIAN WIGEON, several GADWALL, PIED-BILLED GREBES, RING-BILLED GULLS, and DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS. May's Point Pool had CANADA GEESE, MALLARDS and GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and possibly other distant ducks. The Knox-Marcellus overlook on East Road had hundreds of SNOW GEESE and CANADA GEESE, 7 DUNLIN, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 1 LEAST SANDPIPER, several NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS high overhead, 1 distant light ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK being harassed by 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS, and probably other stuff which I overlooked or forgot, but Lenz, Harvey & Billerman have probably entered in eBird. Our next stop was Martens Tract, where the pond held 1 immature COMMON MOORHEN and several PIED-BILLED GREBES. Joined by Judy Thoroughman we waded through the vegetation in the vicinity of the several east-west ditches which are south and east of the parking area. Bob waded more seriously than the rest of us and found at least one NELSON'S SPARROW which eventually gave us all an excellent look. There were also SONG SPARROWS, a SWAMP SPARROW, and a MARSH WREN, but many glimpses of birds were unidentifiable by us. I noticed something odd though - there is a marker or balloon North of Crusoe Lake in Savannah, NY that looks like it is only accessible by water and it is marked East Road. That is not the East Road that most birders know of as East Road just north of Mays Point. [cayugabirds-l] another owl at Van Dyne Spoor Road
This evening (4:50 pm till 5:15 pm) there were no Short-eared Owls on Van Dyne Spoor Road, Savannah, NY but I did hear a distant calling Great Horned Owl. There could have been two of them and it was hard to tell where they were calling from ; it could have been to the east which would be Cayuga County. They seemed to answer my call. I also saw a Rough-legged Hawk here and a Northern Mockingbird. I was there pretty late so I didn't see the birds reported to be visiting a deer carcass there. Earlier on Bixby Wood Road there was a flock of about 300 or 400 Snow Buntings swirling around. [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe Tuesday 3/16/10
I missed the Western Grebe late yesterday afternoon and then read the post from Jerry Lazarczyk this morning and decided to try again on the eastern access to Chimney Bluffs. It was a much better day to try as there was less wind and therefore less wave action and there was better light today. We arrived at 11:00 am and found Curt Fox searching. Bob found the Grebe in just minutes. It was out to the west or left from the parking area. Too far away for a photo for us. Then it swam in closer. Then Jean Skelly arrived and got a look through Bob's scope before it disappeared behind the cliffs. Curt climbed the walk to the top of the bluffs and saw it from there. It might have been possible to see it from the beach also but we didn't try that as I had to get back to work. [cayugabirds-l] 1 Western Grebe photo 3/19/10 this afternoon
The Western Grebe was in close enough for a digiscoped photo today at 1:00 pm. It took forever to get a photo though because it kept diving. It was to the right of the right No Swimming sign and then it moved to the left so that it was straight out but also farther out. Bob Guthrie also found one Red-throated Loon. This bird was calling loudly and Bob got photos. Huckleberry Swamp had a sign on it: CLOSED FOR THE WINTER. Does that mean it opens tomorrow for the first day of Spring? [cayugabirds-l] Black Vulture, Peregrine Falcons and more
Bob Guthrie and I spent several hours today at Broadway Road, Wayne County watching the hawks. With the wind it was cold so I'm sorry to say we stayed in the car most of the time. We might have missed a few hawks this way but we still enjoyed the show. The Black Vulture came by at 1:15 pm. It was a close low bird and I first noticed the lighter tips to its wings. Then it was easy to see the very short blunt tail. Bob Guthrie got a photo of it which confirms the ID. It will be interesting to see if Derby Hill reports one today or tomorrow. The Peregrine came through early at 10:45 am and flew low over the road right in front of us. We were able to clearly see the face pattern. Then it started to rain so we didn't stay to see if any owls came out. [cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe on Van Dyne Spoor Road, Savannah
This afternoon I stopped at the Montezuma Visitors Center and talked to Chuck Gibson. He told me that Mark Miller (from Waterloo) reported seeing an Eared Grebe at the end of Van Dyne Spoor Road this morning. Chuck said Mark got some photos that weren't easy to get because of the reeds there. I took my time getting over there and didn't arrive until about 4:30. At the eastern end of Van Dyne Spoor I found a diving female Bufflehead, a couple American Coots and some Green-winged Teal. I followed the diving Bufflehead with my scope for awhile and then panned right and there was the Eared Grebe in breeding plumage. It had a long skinny neck and wispy golden ear tuffs (that looked almost orange in the afternoon light). I showed the bird to Kathy- a lady from Syracuse. I watched the grebe for awhile but lost it when I went to get my camera. There is a little open channel perpendicular to the end of the road and the bird was in the close reeds just to the right to that channel. Also here were Trumpeter Swans, Barn Swallows, Wilson's Snipes, GBH and a harrier. On the way here when I turned on to the wooded road from the bridge in Savannah I found a tree with 25 Cedar Waxwings; I have been waiting for them for long time. More birds might be showing up again on Van Dyne Spoor now that the main pool at Montezuma has been drained. In a effort to verify the Eared Grebe at Van Dyne Spoor this morning I unfortunately found a Horned Grebe in breeding plumage in the same location. I'm sorry for any trouble the other post caused anyone. So unless someone finds an Eared Grebe here I will delete my Eared Grebe from my ebird. I also found a Pied-billed Grebe not far from this bird. Thought you would all like to know that LaRue St. Clair found 2 Ruddy Turnstones and one Hudsonian Godwit from the towpath road this morning. I talked to him and he said they were along the first impoundment about a third of the way in the towpath. I looked at 1:00 pm and did not see them. It was hot, the road is in terrible condition and you can't see in from very many spots. We (Bob and I) did find the nice assortment of ducks LaRue also reported: Gadwall, American Wigeon, Green-winged Teal, 1 Blue-winged Teal and of course many Wood Ducks and Mallards. We all saw two Sandhill Cranes from East Road; they are very easy to spot. The auto loop drive has changed. You now drive till the photo blind turnoff and turn around and come back. The drive past the blind area is blocked off. On the shorten drive today Bob and I saw 3 adult Spotted Sandpipers and 4 chicks. The chicks were tiny and very cute when they bobbed just like the adults. They would have made a wonderful video but they weren't close enough for that. At the Visitors Center early: 1 Lesser Yellowlegs, 3 Killdeer and 2 Semipalmated Sandpipers. The Hummingbird feeder has been filled so Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Cerulean Warblers still calling. A Cedar Waxwing nest in one of the trees along the entrance road. Lots of birds at South Spring Pool. We followed a couple Black-billed Cuckoos along the path. Also Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and Green Heron here and many more. Location: Seneca Meadows Environmental Education Center from Black Brook Road, Seneca County 7/10/10 This is a great locations but requires a lot of walking with almost no shade so start early and or pick a day that won't be too hot. I think the official opening is in August. Notes: With Bob Guthrie ,Lyn Jacobs and Lynn Donaldson. We all had great close looks at 3 Least Bittern that I called in, 2 Grasshopper Sparrows, and the Virginia Rail. We found a flock of Bobolinks at the bench at the end of the woodchip trail. We heard many Marsh Wrens calling from several locations but only saw one. Savannah Sparrows are everywhere but we only found one Swamp Sparrow. We were puzzled for awhile about an odd call and after some study decided it was an American Golden-Plover which called repeatedly early from near the parking area by Black Brook Road, Seneca County. If Lyn Jacobs also posts I'm usually more conservative with my numbers. I think this is the best location ever for Least Bittern. I looked for the Franklin's Gull for a couple hours from the towpath on this cloudy afternoon with no luck. Then as I was leaving the sun came out so I decided to check Knox-Marcellus from East Road and found it. I first noticed it flying along with shorebirds that got up. I followed it with my scope and when it landed I could see the dark cheeks. The Little Blue Heron was at May's Point Pool this afternoon at 3:50 pm. It was straight out from the viewing platform and then it flew to the right and landed along the far edge. I did not see the Glossy Ibis today. East Road early: 100 goldfinches in field and trees with several White-crowned and White-throated Sparrows Visitor's Center morning: Black-bellied Plovers, Dunlin, Solitary Sandpiper, Lesser Yellowlegs. Drive: Ring-necked Ducks, American Coot, Redhead, Lesser Scaup, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler Benning Marsh: White-rumped Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper Tschache: 2 Great Egrets in a tree south from the tower Towpath: 9 Sandhill Cranes, White-throated and White-crowned Sparrows, Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Yellow-rumped Warblers We looked over the Snow Geese for Ross's Goose but could not find one - many geese had their heads tucked in (morning & afternoon). When I heard Bobolinks, Eastern Meadowlarks and Savannah Sparrows this morning on Johnson Road in Yates County I thought this looks like a good spot for Grasshopper Sparrows and soon I found one. There may even be more than one spot on Johnson Road for the GRSP. It took me a long time to finally see the meadowlark. I saw a Bobolink caring food. I birded Van Dyne Spoor Road this morning even though it was drizzling and then raining. My best find was a beautiful Swainson’s Thrush. It was near telephone pole number 310 on the south side of the road; the spicebush there had a lot of reddish fruits which thrushes like. I stopped there to look at two small Black Tupelo trees that I found in August; I wanted to see how they were showing their fall colors. They are turning red and are on the north side of the road. In August I noticed them because they have very shiny leaves. This afternoon there was a Great Egret in the wet area between the Malone Unit and Crusoe Creek on Spring Lake Road in Savannah, NY. [cayugabirds-l] Common Gallinule on Van Dyne Spoor Road
These photos are not great but they prove the ID. Several birders have heard the Common Gallinule recently and some doubted the reports. Ebird wanted them confirmed so I took the photos. Sorry the light wasn’t better. Mark Miller also saw this bird today. I have been in contact with Eric Lewis. I asked him if the bird could have been a Sora. He said he thought about it but the bird was way too small. He said he saw one bird and heard another which was a long series of clicks def. not a Sora. He found these birds at Huckleberry Swamp. I can't get there for several days as my husband just had an operation. Still waiting for him to come out of Anesthesia- all went well so far. [cayugabirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird - Van Dyne Spoor Road
There was a extremely large mixed flock of blackbirds in the marsh on Van Dyne Spoor Road this evening. Many of the birds were sitting on cattails and weeds instead of diving in. I got out my window mount and soon found a beautiful male Yellow-headed Blackbird. The head and breast were a brilliant yellow. The body, wings and tail were black and I could easily see the white wing patch on the wing that was facing me. I was thrilled to get such a good look at this bird. [cayugabirds-l] Wilson's Phalarope & Sandhill Cranes.
This morning I was with Linda & Steve Benedict when they found a beautiful Wilson's Phalarope on Carncross Road. The bird was a male in breeding plumage. It was fairly easy to see but not easy to photograph as it swam though the short corn stalks there. The phalarope was sticking pretty close to a Greater Yellowlegs; I guess the yellowlegs was stirring up some food for it. We also saw and heard two Sandhills Cranes in flight. I reported the birds at the sight with BirdLog NA. [cayugabirds-l] Tricolored Heron this evening
I was at an Organ Concert when I read the email alert of the Tricolored Heron on my phone during intermission. This is not the place you want to be when you get one of these but since I was with someone and more interested in the second half I stayed. I decided I might have a better chance in the evening so after dinner I went to Van Dyne Spoor Road with no other directions for this great bird. I arrived at 6:30 pm and after more than an hour I found it. First I found a Black-crowned Night-Heron and watched it for awhile then 3 or 4 juvenile BCNHs arrived and dropped into the marsh. I watched the adult for awhile and then 3 more adults arrived and they all stayed up in the small trees staring down into the marsh. Then I looked back where the first adult was and in its place was the Tricolored Heron and the adult was BCNH was underneath the same tree. Then they changed places again and the Tricolored Heron stayed nearby down on the ground. When the Tricolored was in the tree I got a good look at the bill which was longer and thinner than the Black-crowned Night-Herons. The TRHE was a dark purplish gray and when it flew from the tree I could see the white, chest, body and underwings. It seemed to stay on the ground for a long long time and I wanted to watch the night herons but I was afraid I would loss it. I watched it fly one more time and then settle less than 12 feet away. I watched it stretch its long neck out. It may stay right there all night. I’d like to be there in the morning to see. Here are directions to this spot: I was near the middle of the road past the trees. I was between telephone poles 296 and 297 just to the east of a small white NWR sign. Looking south from there is a small narrow channel of open water. The trees the herons were in are just to the left (east) of this. Go get it! As I left Savannah it sounded like rain as the bugs hit my windshield. I found this breeding plumaged Ruff at Larue’s Lagoon on the drive at MNWR. I watched it for awhile. Then Mark Miller showed up and he took some more photos. I posted it with BirdLog NA. Hi all, I'm on the thruway headed east and I'm almost positive I just spotted the Tricolored Heron in flight at North Spring Pool MNWR in the back or western part but close to the thruway. The bus I'm on has beautiful large windows and the heron was the right color in great light and I saw the white belly. I stopped by Sodus Point this windy afternoon and found: 30 Common Terns on the pier 4 Caspian Terns usually on the pier but on the beach today 4 Ruddy Turnstones on the beach but they were on the pier earlier in the week when it wasn't windy 1 American Pipit on the beach 4 Killdeer on the beach 24 Dunlin some on the pier and some on the beach 12 Semipalmated Sandpipers on the pier for a short time I also heard Blackpoll Warblers and a Black-throated Green Warbler. No Whimbrels. Van Dyne Spoor Rd. was very muddy with few birds late this afternoon until I spotted a falcon get a lot of ducks in the air to the north. They were south of the railroad tracks so I went out Wright Rd and found it full of Northern Pintails and Mallards in the corn stubble. There were also Black Ducks, American Wigeon and Horned Larks in the fields. When we get the warmer weather that is coming they will probably show up in the muck lands along route 31.
