Re: [cayugabirds-l] witnessed bird drama
After the fact, as they flew away, I realized I hadn't noticed whether they were male or female or one of each - it happened so quickly and was so surprising. It did occur to me that perhaps it wasn't helping behavior, but somehow, it looked like it. I walked over to check for a downed bird, arriving within 10-15 seconds of the thump, and saw two Baltimore orioles on the grass just under the windows, one with its wings partially out and face down, the other standing right next to it. Within a second or two of my arrival at the window, the standing bird pecked the other bird on the neck, and the downed bird jerked and brought its head up, but then slumped again. The standing bird then called hoarsely, then immediately pecked the other bird even harder on the neck. This time it jerked again, then, within a second or two, both birds flew off into the woods together. I've never seen one bird help another in this way. Right now the bushes are beautiful AND full of birds, and my FOY Chipping Sparrow just popped out of one for a few minutes of pecking at the seed on the ground. One of my bushes is ancient and huge, and requires twice-a-year pruning (not to confine its shape, just its size), but the other is only a few years old, an off-shoot of the older one, and is a usual staging area for sparrows and juncos etc. on their way to the feeder. A cheap, simple landscaping plant! I recommend it. (Also, in cold winters, birds seem to eat the buds, and in those years, my forsythia blooms in October!) [cayugabirds-l] Legality of crow shoot?
I am not clear about the legality of the Schuyler crow shoot. The American crow is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. However, there is a "depredation order for blackbirds, cowbirds, grackles, crows, and magpies." This can be viewed on the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, link below: http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=9c040593bbdf74735e0a72d67dcacf29&rgn=div8&view=text&node=50:8.0.1.1.4.4.1.3&idno=50 In the order's language, crows can be killed when they "are committing or about to commit depredations on ornamental or shade trees, agricultural crops, livestock, or wildlife, or when concentrated in such numbers and manner that they are a health hazard or other nuisance". In addition, non-lethal methods of control of depredation must be tried before lethal methods may be used. Non-toxic shot or non-toxic bullets (from a list of approved shot) must be used if a firearm is used. I question whether the Schuyler crow shoot is in accordance with federal law since the plan is to shoot crows anywhere in the county, and simply for recreation and to win a competition. [cayugabirds-l] FOY Eastern Phoebe
A pair of eastern phoebes often nest on our house, and I saw one (FOY) looking for a spot today. [cayugabirds-l] Redpolls etc.
For the first time ever we had two Common Redpolls at our feeder on Perry Lane on west hill this morning. Also, several House Finches enjoyed splashing around in our birdbath in water from melted snow. [cayugabirds-l] King Eider at Stewart Park
I spent about 15 minutes around 2pm today enjoying excellent views with and without binoculars (too close for anything but low power on my scope!) of the King Eider swimming, diving and eating crayfish (I think) in Fall Creek near the boathouse. He was often as close as 15 feet from the boathouse dock, and did not seem at all afraid of me and the other three birders there. Then he swam toward the lake and lighthouses. How wonderful to have this community and list serve to alert us of these wonderful opportunities! [cayugabirds-l] cowbird/cardinal parasitism
Today on arriving home we saw a juvenile cowbird in the hedgerow near our garage. We also spotted a cardinal in the hegerow. The cowbird flew to a tall dead tree that we can see from our dining room. We ran in to the house and saw the cowbird on a branch adjacent to a female cardinal. After a few seconds the cardinal flew off and the cowbird followed directly behind her. It seemed that the cardinal was still caring for the cowbird. We weren't aware that a cardinal would care for a cowbird fledgling. We did find an amazing YouTube video of a catbird adopting a cardinal fledgling whose nest was knocked out of its tree by a thunderstorm, so I guess birds are capable of almost anything. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Tagged crow spotted
While walking at 9:30 this morning on Meadow St., not birding, I saw a crow on the grass in front of Moe's Southwest Grill. It had a 1 by 1 1/2 inch white tag on each wing. The tag on the left wing was labeled "GS". I did not see if there was a label on the other tag. Does anybody have any information about this?
