M8195 SLU died while in use

2017-09-24 Thread Aaron Jackson via cctalk
Hi all,

I'm pretty new to PDP-11s. I recently got a PDP-11/73, M8192 CPU, two
M8067 RAM, M7195 (2 async SLU card with boot ROMs and an extra 128K of
RAM), plus a few other cards which I've removed to try and figure out
what is going on.

While playing in ODT, the console completely stopped responding. I
hooked up pin 1 to a scope and I can see the UART clock, divide by time
per division and 16 and I get something close to 9600.

The M8192 CPU has four diagnostic lights, as does the SLU. The CPU shows
1000, which I believe is fine, and means it's in ODT. The SLU card has
. I've had a Google and I believe this means it can't communicate
with the CPU.

I've cleaned the contacts with 99%+ isoproyl, but no luck
unfortunately. Does anyone have any ideas? It was working and then it
wasn't :(

Thanks,

Aaron.

The 12th VCFMW has come and gone - and it was good! Great talks and displays,
a functional badge, record attendance and (virtually) no smoking hardware!
Photo galleries and videos are being posted at our Past Events page here:

http://vcfmw.org/past.html

New this year are some panoramic/spherical photos I shot at various locations
throughout the main hall. Most browsers should allow you to view them in
360-degree mode on the Google Photos page. They really give you a feeling of
the density of hardware (and people!) at the show, along with just being a cool
technical feat. We'll definitely be shooting more of those next year.

Videos of the talks will be posted on our Youtube channel in the weeks to come:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu3UDdi0llxiSaFKq-p5gYQ

If you have any galleries or videos not linked on our page, please let me know
and I will get them posted.

A BIG thank you to all who donated, purchased items at the auction, spoke,
displayed and attended our little nerdfest. The thanks we receive at and after
the show make it all worthwhile - but it couldn't have happened without your
support and participation.

And now a brief rest and on to next year

but the clincher was I had take some old family photos that had the

Re: Importing a PDP-8 from Canada

2017-09-24 Thread Michael Thompson via cctalk
Thanks to everyone who offered advice and recommendations about
re-importing equipment to the US from Canada.
What follows is our experience and does not represent advice or
recommendations from the RICM.

We sent an email to DHS asking about the re-importing procedure and what
paperwork we would need, but never received a reply.

I called the customs office in Highgate Springs, VT where we planned to
re-enter the US. The customs officer said that they were most concerned
about proof of ownership. I asked about not paying any duty because
everything we brought back was of US manufacture. The officer said that
even though it was made in the US if it was purchased in Canada you still
might owe duty when bringing it back to the US.

The RICM has an accession form that all donors sign that deeds the
equipment to the RICM. We added a list of the donated equipment, including
serial numbers, to the accession document. Just in case, we made a
pro-forma (commercial) invoice listing the equipment and an estimated
value. We also found a Form 3311, DECLARATION FOR FREE ENTRY OF RETURNED
AMERICAN PRODUCTS. We filled that out even though it is most likely only
used for getting items back into the US that were sent out for repair.

The customs officer asked if we purchased the equipment, and if it was for
or personal use. Since the equipment was donated we didn't buy it, and
since it was going into the museum's collection it was not for our personal
use. He seemed satisfied and within a few minutes we were on our way home.

The most interesting item that we brought back was an ECRM model 5902
document scanner from 1977 that is powered by a PDP-8/m. It looks like we
have all of the documentation for it, including the software on paper tape.
We will post pictures of it on our WWW page in a day or so.

Thanks again for everyone's help with this project.

Thanks Andrea,

Yes you are right, it is in a tightly sealed casing and getting it open
is probably going to be very destructive.

As per Rob and Paul's suggestion, I ended up removing it, since I was
considering this open already. It running fine of course, but I will
keep an eye out for a line filter which will fit in the steel housing.

Thanks,

Aaron.

Hello,
I don't have in mind the exact image of the filters of PDP11, but in some
case the filters are repairable in some way.
The hard problem of course is to dismount it.
Sometime these are stained iron foil boxes, filled with inductors and
capacitors, then some gel insulator, and finally soldered with SnPb.
Usually Rifa oil capacitors were used, which will explode after some years.

If you have some mechanical ability, you could try to open the filter case,
desoldering it, or cutting on two edges, or removing bolts, etc.

I successfully desoldered a filter of a Pro380, after it exploded.
It took a couple of good hours to do the work, but now has new capacitors
inside, and it seems like new.

PDP11/84 and PDP-11/94 notes

2017-09-24 Thread Rod Smallwood via cctalk

First ... If the following is already known or incorrect then apologies.

In my efforts to get an 11/94 running with UniBus cards the following
came to light.

1. You need to start with the fact there are _two_ different types of
hybrid Uni/Qbus back planes that can go in a BA box.

2. One has _four_ QBus slots and the other _three_.

3. The four slot type was the first type produced .

4. In an 11/84 a four Qbus slot backlane  has a MDM (monitor) module in
the first slot, a KDJ11-B CPU in the second slot, PMI memory in the
third and a MLM (load module) in the forth.

5. This type of 11/84 could be converted into an 11/94 with a kit of
parts. The 11/94 manual shows this conversion

6. After conversion you ended up with a KDJ11-E in the first slot, and
an APS module in the second slot.

7. If the 11/94 manual is correct then the other two slots are left
empty and an MLM module is located in the Unibus back plane.

8. So far so good. An 11/84-A converted into an 11/94 as per the 11/94
manual.

Then the weird bit There's a section that mentions an 11/84-E (never
heard of those) conversion to 11/94 but does not seem to make any sense.

So what about the three QBus slot back plane?

Well I have two 11/94 systems with this type of back plane and they are
clearly only suitable to hold an KDJ11-E and its APS module.

It could never be the basis of a KDJ11-B 11/84 - not enough slots.

So there can be two types of 11/94.

One an upgrade from a KDJ11-B 11/84 with its four QBus slot back plane.

The other native KDJ11-E 11/94 based on the three slot.

Comments and confirmations please

Rod
