Only on the PC (via Steam). There is no console beta that I'm aware off.

If you already own Half-Life 2 or Episode 1 you can give the licenses to
those away to somebody.

But if you're fine with the PC then, yes, definitely - you could be fragging
in minutes. ;^)

Depends on how you received payment. Any kind of credit card payment (whether
through PayPal or any other method) has the potential to be reversed. So yes,
most of us will ship only to confirmed addresses, and many ebay sellers will
not ship out of the country at all, as your chances of fraud are much higher
and ability to recoup the funds almost nil.

Re: Some foreign policy sanity from Democrats

2007-09-28 Thread Captian Oblivious
The problem with "clean sweeps", is that they're not really that good
for anyone.

The entire system is geared towards checks and balances- I don't know why
anyone would want their party to be in total control. We've been shown how
that type of responsibility corrupts.

That's why we don't need any more than two parties.

A No Confidence vote would be a nice addition, but I've had enough of the
"single mind" mindset. It's better when compromise is needed, IMO.

Certainly not! The host has the box and you get all the usual advantages of
whatever infrastructure they have in place (redundancy, generator backup, etc.)
while having basically a dedicated portion of the server for your own
usesomewhat like a co-located box. It's rapidly becoming one of the most
popular types of hosting for people that want more than you can get with shared
hosting but don't want to spring for the cost of an entire dedicated box.
Here's a good article covering the pros and cons.

Re: Funny song

2007-09-28 Thread Charlie Griefer
heh. i heard that song the other morning.

almost as good as Paisley's "Alcohol" song:

I can make anybody pretty
I can make you believe any lie
I can make you pick a fight
with somebody twice
your size. . .

Well I've been known to cause a few breakups
and I've been known to cause a few births
I can make you new friends
Or get you fired from work.

(Chorus)
And since the day I left Milwaukee
Lynchburg, Bordeaux, France
Been makin the bars
With lots of big money
and helpin white people dance
I got you in trouble in high school
and college now that was a ball
you had some of the best times
you'll never remember with me
Alcohol, Alcohol

I got blamed at your wedding reception
for your best man's emberrasing speech
and also for those naked pictures of you at the beach
I've influenced kings and world leaders
I helped Hemingway write like he did
and I`ll bet you a drink or two that I can make you
put that lampshade on your head . .

And since the day I left Milwaukee
Lynchburg, Bordeaux, France
Been makin a fool out of folks
just like you
and helpin white people dance
I am medicine and I am poison
I can help you up or make you fall
you had some of the best times
you'll never remember with me
Alcohol

And since the day I left Milwaukee
Lynchburg, Bordeaux, France
Been makin the bars
With lots of big money
(crowd:) and helpin white people dance
I got you in trouble in high school
and college now that was a ball
you had some of the best times
you'll never remember with me
Alcohol, Alcohol

Funny song

2007-09-28 Thread Bruce Sorge
I know that some of you here don't like country music, but I just heard
a song by Brad Paisley called Online. It is freaking funny. Here are the
lyrics:

I work down at The Pizza Pit
And I drive an old Hyundai
I still live with my mom and dad
I'm five foot three and overweight
I'm a sci: fi fanatic, mild asthmatic
Never been to second base
But there's a whole 'nother me
That you need to see
Go check out Myspace.

'Cause online I'm out in Hollywood
I'm six foot five and I look damn good
I drive a Maserati, I'm a black belt in karate
And I love a good glass of wine
It turns girls on that I'm mysterious
I tell 'em I don't want nothing serious
'Cause even on a slow day I can have a three-way chat
With two women at one time.

I'm so much cooler online
I'm so much cooler online.

I get home I kiss my mom
And she fixes me a snack
I head down to my basement bedroom
And fire up my Mac
In real life the only time
I've ever been to L.A.
Was when I got the chance with the marching band
To play tuba in the Rose Parade.

But online I live in Malibu
I pose for Calvin Klein
I've been in GQ
I'm single and I'm rich
And I got a set of six-pack abs that would blow your mind
It turns girls on that I'm mysterious
I tell 'em I don't want nothing serious
'Cause even on a slow day I can have a three-way chat
With two women at one time.

I'm so much cooler online
Yeah, I'm cooler online.

When you've got my kind of stats
It's hard to get a date
Let alone a real girlfriend
But I grow another foot and lose a bunch of weight
Every time I log in.

Online I'm out in Hollywood
I'm six foot five and I look damn good
Even on a slow day I can have a three-way chat
With two women at one time.

I'm so much cooler online
Yeah, I'm cooler online
I'm so much cooler online
Yeah, I'm cooler online.

I'm looking forward to it. I still pick up little FORTRAN and COBOL jobs. I'm

Well got to run. My wife just got home from work. She is ready to go

Re: Book Suggestions

2007-09-28 Thread Charlie Griefer
just to clarify... if you're using CF 8, the -only- books are the
CFWACK books (there are 3 in the series for 8, as has been pointed
out).

The CF Bible (which I did like a lot) was for CFMX 6.1

O'Reilly's CF book was for MX 6 (and then the 2nd edition for 6.1).

You can get the older books cheaper, and much of the foundation will
still be the same... but you won't find anything on the new features
of CFMX 7 or 8 in any printed book other than a WACK :)

Oh, and as Shawna said, if you are in the mid-west and a CF'er, you are

Quite the entire family from what I understand is quite the piece of work. BTW
its not just this shelter that's overwhelmed but most shelters in the region.
This weekend some of the ferrets are being transferred to a couple of Virginia
based shelters and others in Maryland, Illinois etc.

btw I had nothing to do with the website (yes it sucks).

but thanks to all who help.

Hi all,

As many of you know, a while ago I let you all know about a large rescue of
ferrets. Well recently there's been another rescue. An Ohio ferret breeder,
because of health issues, decided to retire and essentially dumped over 700
(yes that's right 700) unneutered and unvaccinated ferrets on the local
shelter. The shelter is is desperate need of help. Cash supplies and help.
Anything. For more information, http://www.ohioferretrescue.com/. I've
already made a couple of donations but much more help is needed.

Re: Book Suggestions

2007-09-28 Thread Ian Skinner
I don't belive the bible. There are no coyotes mentioned

I do not believe that there are any coyotes in the CF|WACK books either, but
they are still very good. They will take you from barely knowing what a
browser is to writing sophisticated n-tear web applications if one reads all of
the several thousand pages. Many of us skip the first several hundred basic
pages which is one reason I believe they broke them out into their own book
this time around. That and the backache problem of carrying around that much
dense tree products.

If you are not aware of it. There are many discussion lists on the House Of
Fusion. This one, cf-community, is meant to be the 'water cooler, gossip'
list. The main general technical list is [EMAIL PROTECTED] There are many
smart people there who do not have the time or patience for the variety of
topic that appear on the community list. So for nuts and bolts questions you
may want to post them there. There are also other much less trafficked lists
for specific topics such as JavaScript, SQL, Server configuration ect.

Re: Are Boulderites on crack?

2007-09-28 Thread Bruce Sorge
Amazingly enough I happen to agree with you guys that the words Under
God should never have been introduced, and in fact the originator of the
pledge had issues with this as well for the same reasons listed below. I
am a religious man who attends church and so on, but I don't think that
prayer has any place in school, and by having God referenced in the
Pledge, it is a prayer of sorts and not just a Pledge of Allegiance.
Just as I said (after I was called out by Judah) I don't think this is
or should be a Christian Nation. I recognize that there are many diverse
children in our schools and thus the word God may be offensive to some
..
So forgetting that the word God is missing from this "revised" version,
the other points still stand I believe.

Hi Murray ... welcome! I'm relatively new to the list, too (as a
contributing member, at least) ... I stay out of the political discussions
and stay up in the bleachers when it gets too rough and blood starts to
flow. But it's fun to watch.

I'm a freelancer in CF ... you'll be surprised at how much work you can get.
I hear all the time that CF developers are hard to find, especially in our
part of the world (i.e., the Midwest - I'm in Kansas City), so if you're
good -- you're gold.

Don't let the red hair and freckles fool ya (a gift from my Irish grandma)
I just traced my family's history and they're all Cherokees from
Oklahoma (near Tahlequah, naturally) on my grandpa's side, so maybe we're
related (in spirit at least) ;)

Enjoy your muffins ...

I'm new to the group and wanted to say hello. Looking at the archives I get
muffins if I lurked and came out, so what do I get for introducing myself?

To let you know, I'm a recently retired developer in Oklahoma who is looking
to suplement my pension with web development. No one wants to hire a
mainframe developer who is freelance only. I decided eb development would
give me some freelance work and Cold Fusion seems to be pretty simple
syntactically.

Also looking at the archives the politics here is a pretty divided. I'm a
social liberal and Native American, so I should fit in with many of you. I
am also a shaman and have risen above traditional gender identification -
thus my email address. In general, that is the extent of my religious
discussion. I will debate politics, but I might suprise you with my
attitude.

RE: Are Boulderites on crack?

2007-09-28 Thread Scott Stewart
And I think "Under God" should be removed.
Here's my reasoning.

1) the original intent of our founding fathers, that the church is the
church and the state is the state, and neither the two shall meet

2) The United States is made up of many different religions (anyone have
statistics on Christian vs. non Christian) we cannot cater to one and not
the others, the best way is to not cater to any. It's the only fair way

3) I feel that if a person is religious, his or her faith should drive their
personal choices, but should not influence the government at large.

4) We are "a nation of laws not men"

Re: another ebay question

2007-09-28 Thread Bruce Sorge
Did you sell something on eBay? If so then I assume you received
payment. And if that is the case, it should not matter where the item is
shipped to. It is bought and paid for. Once you ship it to where ever it
is supposed to, it is out of your hands. Just have proof of when and
how you shipped it. So in this case, I would go ahead and do it. Now if
it is a COD deal, no way.

Re: Iran

2007-09-28 Thread Judah McAuley
Pssst...Pakistan, as a whole, is not the most pro-American country in
the world. Musharraf essentially signed a peace agreement with the
ungovernable parts of the country that are actively hiding the very
people that were responsible for the September 11th attacks. He himself
is an unelected military dictator that has forced out previous Prime
Ministers that might challenge his rule. You think that's a happier,
more stable situation than Iran?

Oh and Pakistan and India do have a history of threatening to wipe out
neighboring countries. Each other. In fact, they have been pulled back
from the brink of all out warfare (with nuclear weapons in play) several
times. Low level skirmishes and armed hostilities between the two occur
on a daily basis. I would argue that you are more likely to see nuclear
weapons used in that region than you are in Iran. That is one of those
bets, however, that is not one you want to lose, so I agree that the
world needs to do the best job it can keeping nuclear weapons from
proliferating. Anywhere.

So I ran across this story today:

http://kjct8.com/Global/story.asp?S=7137586

Text of the Pledge and student's revision

Associated Press - September 27th, 2007 2:24 PM ET

Text of Pledge of Allegiance:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to
the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all."

A revised version by members of the Student Workers group, which they
plan to recite in place of the traditional pledge:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag and my constitutional rights with which
it comes. And to the diversity, in which our nation stands, one nation,
part of 1 planet, with liberty, freedom, choice and justice for all".

WTF is this about? Please tell me this is a joke. What seems to be
missing here?

God, America, indivisibility, Republic? None of these things are
mentioned in the "revised" version.

And when did the flag come with constitutional rights? As far as I know,
the flag represents the Republic of America, not constitutional rights.
These kids really need to get a grip on reality and figure out what is
going on. What is really scary is these kids are the future of America.

So what's next, they want to change the National Anthem too?

Your calculus assumes that Iran will never start a war on its own, and that
diplomacy has a snowball's chance in hell of working.

NK, Pakistan, and India have the bomb, but none of their leaders stand on a
platform chanting "Death to America" on a daily basis. None of their leaders
regularly deny historical acts of genocide or threaten to wipe out
neighboring countries. The most hostile is NK, and the only reason Kim Jong
Il is still in power is that he has the backing of the Chinese (who fear
American military power and Korean democracy on their borders) and enough
artillery to detroy Seoul and kill hundreds of thousands of people in any
conflict. Basically, he is holding the South Koreans hostage, which is what

Have you considered getting a VPS? There was a thread this week on the main
CF-Talk list about shared vs. VPS hosting that you may want to review.
AHPHosting.net has very reasonable prices for their CF8 VPS servers, you'll
find a link to them right on the HouseofFusion site which they handle the
servers for. It really can be a great way to go if you want more reliability,
have a number of sites to host and want more control over your server. If you
are interested in trying them, drop me a note privately and I can see about
getting you a discounted rate as well.

Re: cf8 hosting

2007-09-28 Thread Ian Skinner
I am very happy with my account at CFDynamics.com but I currently pay
~$29.71/month for their enhanced plan so that I have the functionality I
want. I just upgraded my account to CF8 last week and I now plan to
start incorporating Flex into my site. They have already confirmed that
my account is Flex ready. I also use GoDaddy for my personal vanity
site, but I would not recommend them for anybody who want a partner in
their hosting provider. Their self-service setup and configurations
work well, but one seems to get what one pays for in customer support.
I also do not know if they have or will upgrade to CF8 or anything about
their Flex support. I have frequently heard good things about HostMySite.

A quick review of my personal experience.

Ian

I've worked for a University before. I liked it in a lot of ways, but it

Re: New to group

2007-09-28 Thread Zaphod Beeblebrox
I was astounded by the coincidence myself.

Now, what this group needs is for Kiera Knightley to join the group,
profess her undying everlasting love for me and then affirm it by
showing up at my office wearing only a pair of black prada shoes.

Everyone cross your fingers and hope for the law of coincidences to continue.

"We meaning CF-Talk Web Developers"

noes noes...i meant generally, in the whole Excel 2007 users, I'm
surprised that an error like this took so long to be caught in the
first place. It's worrying because you think that a major platform
with a critical mass of users can't be bugged in these ways. I think
that someone, somewhere much smarter and knowledgeable than me would
catch an error like that immediately.

We've just finished a project that, were not for a shared document, it would
have been much more tedious to keep on track. 2 months with users making
updates throughout the day.

I'm sure you can do things like this with Office but it was easy enough and
free for us to do this in the browser.
