Re: CF programmer with experience building Social networking sites
Actually, the original post went to CF-Jobs, while the replies went to CF-Jobs-Talk. I believe Michael's code does that automatically... When a discussion starts on a thread on CF-Jobs, it moves it over to CF-Jobs-Talk. I have to double-check that with Michael, however Judith On Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 10:07 PM, Phillip M. Vector [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: That would be bad... Is that how your forum software works? If I hit reply on a forum, I would want it to go to the thread I was replying to. Not a private email. Re: Watchout for this job FLASH ARCHITECT POSITION IN TX
The point of the CF-Jobs-Talk list is not to negatively comment on any one individual or company who posts to the CF-Jobs list (or to this list, for that matter.) The point of CF-Jobs-Talk is to have a discussion of issues that come up when one is looking for a job or trying to find an employee. The discussion should never get personal. If you wish to comment on any particular person or company who posts, simply say, If you want to know more about this company, please contact me offlist. That is all that need be said. Keep in mind, however, that every story has two sides, and when you hear negative feedback, you are only hearing one side of the story. I will talk to Michael later on tonight (he happens to be on a tight deadline, folks, and can't deal with this at the moment) about what he wants to do about this thread. Meanwhile, please consider this thread closed and let's let the subject die. Re: What is it with telecommuting?
I think the debate on the benefits and disadvantages of telecommuting is fascinating. I think it's important, whether you work onsite or from your home office remotely, to keep up clear and effective communication. At one point, when I had just had my first child, I tried to work remotely for a company from my house. It didn't work because my boss at the time (they had transferred me to a new department) was so busy that she couldn't communicate effectively with me. I would call her and she would never return my calls. My emails went unanswered. It was very frustrating. Eventually, I quit - but I imagine that if I had a more responsive boss, I might have stayed on. And with a different company, it might have worked. So I guess it very much depends on who the players are, and how communicative they are - how effectively do they work when working remotely? Some people just need to be there in the office. And some bosses seem to need that face time. Re: Dead Beat Clients.
Vincent, I take exception to this comment because it is really posted out of true ignorance: even the owners of this site tells us what we moan about and if we do they take down our posts. We take down posts that are libelous and inflammatory and really, in many cases, cannot be proven beyond rhetoric. We do not censor posts coming in, but when posts hit the archive, we have the choice of what to remove or not. We've let a lot of stuff go. It is extremely rare that we actually delete something. Can you name a post that we've deleted recently, or was it simply moved from CF-Jobs to CF-Jobs-Talk? Yes, we've deleted the root post from this thread simply because not only is it libelous, we don't even think it's from a human being. Re: Just joined; looking for advice
Matt -- 1. Before you go completely freelance, try to do some side work and build up a roster of clients. Freelance can be feast or famine, and if you can keep the full time job and start slow, that would be better. 2. Ideally, you should be lining up your next freelance gigs while working on your current ones. It would be nice if you can be lining up projects at least 2 months to 6 months in advance. While it's not always easy to work that out, it's what you should try to aim for. 3. Many freelancers fall down when it comes to estimating their hours. Then, when the job takes longer than expected, they may end up working for far less than they intended. It's better to overestimate than to underestimate (Hey, if you finish early, it only makes you look good!) Take your estimate and multiply it by 1 and a half... Keep a record of your estimates and the actual time it took so you can get a better idea of whether you were close or not. This way, you'll be better at estimating in the future. Good luck! Judith - Original Message - So what kind of advice would folks give to a someone considering quitting my regular job and becoming a full-time freelancer. My regular job is a mix of coding, network maintanence, and other IT-type stuff. Over the past year or so I've picked up a couple of freelance/contractor positions. The primary reason I am considering this is that the freelance work pays much more - almost twice. I've calculated all the costs of things like health insurance, taxes, etc. and believe I could come out ahead. A secondary reason would be I could concentrate on coding/builing applications and drop the less enjoyable parts of the job which are coding. Ideally I would be able to have my current employer as a client and be able to continue the coding part of this job. But that may be wishful thinking, especially when I tell them my hourly rate. Any advice and suggestions are appreciated. Re: IDEA: Candidate Blacklist
The idea of a candidate blacklist, or of a company ranting place, which have been proposed on this list, are both so totally against the spirit of this list. This is meant to be a list that lets us discuss things like the job search, finding the right candidates, finding a better ColdFusion job, broadening your skillset so you're more employable... the job market, the tech market... These are all fair subjects for this list. Please do not abuse this list by using it to: - name call - destroy each other's reputation - tear down someone's job post (which is where this all started) - carry your petty arguments and flame wars to new heights. CF-Jobs is for posting jobs and for posting job requests. If you dislike someone's job post, email him offlist. Do not discuss it on this list, or on CF-Jobs. The same goes for any personal comments or vendettas. Do not carry them out on House of Fusion. This discussion is closed. And if you have a problem with that, email me offlist. Re: Job Flames (Re: DEVELOPER NEEDED: Part-Time Project Work; 100% Telecommute Opportunity)
It's not the message. It's the way you say it. Does this list of skillsets seem realistic? is a fair question, which should be asked without selecting one particular job post or one particular person. The last thing you should do is alienate a potential employer (or contact) who could help you later on, no matter what you think of his list. To say: You're _fill-in-the-blank_ because of this list puts a value judgement on the list poster, which causes negative feelings and doesn't really get your message across. That's my two cents. I think discussion would be better served by example, and not by pointing fingers. Now can we get to a discussion that's more relevant for this list (or couch it in a way that's less negative)?
