RE: Anyone know about firewall software?

2000-05-13 Thread Helge Hetland

There's (at least) 2 modes of address hiding used in firewalls.
1. all internal addresses share the same external address.
2. all internal addresses is "mapped" to a pool of external addresses.

Another method is "stateful inspection":
All connections has to be initiated from behind the firewall (the firewall
accepts only incoming connections that was initiated from the inside).

To prevent spoofing the firewall "knows" what interface the internal
addresses should come from.
(prevents outsiders to use an internal address to fool the firewall)

This method is used by a lot of firewalls, we use Checkpoint Firewall-1.

When this method is used there's no problems(?) with publishing the real
address, outsiders can't reach it if your firewall administrator doesn't
want them to.

I should think most firewalls will allow you to 'publish' the real
addresses. This will allow every pc on the inside to be known by it's real
ip number from the outside. At least Axent Raptor 6.0 has this feature.
However to my knowledge there are very few valid reasons to use it.

RE: SQL Max record ID ?

2000-05-13 Thread Nick Slay

Sean,

These weren't message, I actually asked him the question personally at a
developer conference we had a couple of months ago.

Chris Evans mentioned earlier something about if only the CF app was going
to be accessing and updating the data, then it would be fine to use UUID's,
but if the database was ever going to be modified by anything/anyone else
then you may possibly have problems. This was Ben's comment, but for the
life of me I can't remember the exact reason. The upshot of it was to use
Identity columns, and the database, as much as possible. There is no doubt
that using the database to do as much work as possible makes a huge
improvement in the performance of your web site, regardless of the tools
used to extract data, ie, ASP, CF etc.

There's also the issue of maintenance, for example, using stored procedures
means that if you have a common query, you only need to modify one stored
procedure as opposed to several different CFQUERY tags.

I have a lot of notes from the conference regarding tips and tricks for
performance of CF apps, I'll write them up and maybe post them to the
mailing list (or a web site) sometime for anyone that might be interested.

Selecting x characters from a table

2000-05-13 Thread WL

Hi,

[SQL Query Question]

I have a Table where some data is entered by the user. Before it's
submitted to the DB I need to run a Query on another table based on what the
user has entered, and I need to lookup the first 2 digits of their Post Code
against a listing in another table. For example:

Poster A enters "DT6 4RT" as their Post Code. I need to lookup the first 2
digits, i.e. "DT". How can this be done?

Thanks in advance,

Right now you have to correct me if I am wrong specify the
variables as caller.varname to pass back to the calling template from the

like this wishlist approach.

Thanks for your reply, Larry.

ThisTag.GeneratedContent works but not very well in the situation below.
Since it fails to encounter any tags it literally passes everything between
the opening and closing tags without processing the embedded variable. Hence
the pound signs are literally sent to the custom tag template. One way I
found to get around this is to wrap tags immediately
around the text string like this:

Long #var# string with variables embedded...

But this defeats the purpose. How can we solve this problem without using
additional nested tags inside the custom tags?

Re:Check for variable

An easy solution would be to use to initialize variables to a default value
if they don't exist.
You could use something like this:

then do a check:

I think it's a little cleaner than using IsDefined and then checking if the var is
empty.

Re: Joining Two Text Fields?

2000-05-13 Thread Marco Gil

I'm using IE and it's two values. Each value is coming from the same
database in different tables. For example:

www.testing.com  = First Value
?ID=23523626 = 2nd Value

For whatever reason, when I output these two values together, it comes out
perfect except when putting them in the HREF parameter. For whatever
reason, it puts a "/" in between the two values like this:

http://www.testing.com/ID=232626

That's clearly not what I want.. i'll try out your method in a few mins :)

Check for variable

2000-05-13 Thread John Allred

I have several templates that require an ID variable to be passed to
them. When the templates load, they run a query "WHERE (COUNTY_NO =
'#ID#')" -- ID is a CGI variable.

I'm trying to account for users that will try to load these templates
without the ID, but I can't make either IsDefined or ParameterExists
work for me. If the user attempts to load without the proper ID, I'd
like to redirect them to another page where I let them select the county
and type of information they want.

I've tried every permutation I can find, but I can't get it to work. I'd
simply like to:
1) Load the page and check for cgi variable
2) If variable exists, process the page
3) If not, redirect user to another page?

Any suggestions?

Also, I understand I'm not doing this very efficiently. Rather than
having different templates for particular types of information, I should
be using the same template and creating the HTML using some sort of
"method". However, I haven't yet come across an explanation of how to do
this (e.g., the way Allaire presents everything with an ID
&Method="..."). Could anyone direct me to a resource for a description?

TIA,

Re: Slightly OT: Lighten things up a little

2000-05-13 Thread AustralianAccommodation.com Pty. Ltd.

Well here in australia wearing seat belts are compulsory and if you are
caught by the police you are fined and in addition to that you loose 3
points off your licence. In Australia a driver is given 12 points on their
licence and each driving offence he / she makes the driver is fined and also
has points deducted

once you are at zero points you loose your licence if you are caught
speeding less than 15km over speed limit there goes another point; if
speeding >15km <30 km over limit there goes 3 points if speeding >30km <45km
over speed limit there goes 4 points over 45 km I think you loose all points

keep in mind with each offence you loose points as well as receive a fine
you must pay

the speeding points thing I can understand however loosing 3 points for
forgetting to place a seatbelt on is a bit tough

Remeber also that the server is running before the information "sent" to the
browser, also, on long generation pages, since the server is running faster
than the browser sees, the server would be way ahead of any checks.

The best way to do this is to check the loop wouldn't be infinite before
it's run, or put some limitation into the SQL (i.e. select top 5000 * from
myTable)

It would slow down the creation, but select Count(*) from myTable where
would product the number of rows, and if it's too many, then refuse to run
it...

BTW, I don't recommend using * in any selects, as it's slower than
specifying the column names, even if there are loads of columns...

Re: Joining Two Text Fields?

2000-05-13 Thread Brook Davies

Are you trying to pass a URL and a value? IF so, you would want to use a
"?" in between the end of the url and the value. I'm not sure if this is
what you want, but it should be fairly easy to do. Try:

I'm not sure if that is what your looking for. What are the two values?
Examples?

Thanks. Also, I read in Forta's book that any code after

Joining Two Text Fields?

2000-05-13 Thread Marco Gil

I have a text field in two different tables and I need to use them joined
together in a HREF parameter of an anchor tag. For example:

 #NewDeals.CouponText#

The problem I find with this though is that the browser places a "/" in
between the two values. Is there any possible way of making it so that the
"/" doesn't appear. Any help with regards to this would be greatly
appreciated.

nesting queries and refreshing the data call????

2000-05-13 Thread Joseph Eugene

Hello all,
I am looking for an efficient way to handle database calls.
1.Probably something like caching the Dataset and
querying the cached dataset, is something like this possible.?

   Select * from Big_Table

  Select * from where field1=#Var1# and Field2="#Var2#

Is something to this effect possible?

2.How do u refresh a CfQuery, when the page Refresh/reloads,
this is th instance where
where form is submitted to the same page itself.?

  Appretiate it.
 Have a good weekend.

Thanks
Joe

Since we're off the subject, I think it would be cool to have a site
with
some sort of profile for each CF-Talk member. A short bio, maybe link
to a
resume, and a picture. Then we could put faces to the names. I mean,
is Dave

actually
drive a little red convertable Miata? Does Fred Sanders *really* wear

cowboy hat and spurs? Ahhh, if only I had more time!!

Re: Increment Strings

2000-05-13 Thread Jim McAtee

Turn the character into it's numeric ASCII value, increment the numeric
value, then turn the new into it's corresponding character.

If you need to wrap Z to A or somesuch, you can get creative using the mod
function or a simple CFIF.
