RE: Repeat Question still needing help

2000-12-27 Thread Warrick, Mark

The file uploading and transfering to another site can be handled with CFFTP.

The querying of a remote datasource could be handled with XML, WDDX, and possibly
CFHTTP if you can load a script onto the remote server with CFFTP (or whatever).

Re: Repeat Question still needing help

2000-12-27 Thread Howie Hamlin

The data source needs to be configured on the server that you are doing the
queries from. I would just automate configuring the datasource to the other
server and make sure that cf has permissions to that server.

I want to upload files at a particular website but store them at a seperate
server where we have additional storage space. We would also like to be
able to query that database through our main site. So how can write a

Re: Audience Profiling

2000-12-27 Thread Xing Li

It's less programming and a lot of back end crunching at the end.

For every page view, record the cgi.http_referr string, the current
cgi.querystring and/or cgi.scriptname, and/or other additional parameters
such as the userid/ip address, time, etc...as much unique data as you will
need in the long run...

once you have the 2gig database sitting idle on the server, use some other
environment, not cf, to access the databse and crunch the data and spit out
classifications of the user and other stats and possiblity back to another
"personalization" database.

Also, you have tried weblog analyzers? If all you need is tracking general
movement then just crunch the weblogs.

Hi,

the administrator of the website will be able to track the user's movement,
like the most frequent visited pages of the site, number of times the user
used a certain facility, etc.

Any idea how do I go about doing that using CF ?

Sounds like a problem. Is there a NEED to have both tables? If not,
I'd merge them into one. If so, then you'd probably be best creating
a separate table for the e-mail addresses, with an ID field and
making the existing e-mail fields ID fields and relate them to the ID
field in the new email table. You are going to need some sort of
relation selecting from 2 tables anyway or you're going to return a
zillion records. I thought I told you that once Will. LOL

If it's just something you need to do quick or don't have access to
the database, you could run 2 queries and do:

Then loop through emaillist for the output.

Is it possible you've been banned from sending email to the AOL network? Try sending
someone on AOL an email with a normal email client. See what happens.

It's also highly probable that the messages are actually getting there - just very

Hi,

I've used SELECT DISTINCT email FROM EMAILS successfully, but now I am
trying to select 2 columns from 2 different tables, as follows, to obtain x
unique email address from the columns "email" and "email2", part of the
tables "EMAILS" and "EMAILS2" respectively.

SELECT distinct email,email2 FROM EMAILS,EMAILS2

After a lot of crunching from my server, it just timed out, and I needed to
restart CF App server to operate the comp again as it had tied up all the
resources. I suppose I'm using the wrong SQL - could someone explain what I
have to do?

Cheers

RE: Repeat Question still needing help

2000-12-27 Thread Warrick, Mark

It is possible to setup a datasource on your local CF server to a remote database so
long as you somehow have access to it. For example, if the remote server is a SQL
server, then you simply enter in the connection string into the datasource options &
there you go - it'll work (with some performance degradation) as though it was on the
same box.

Let's say that a remote server has an Access database on it. Well, in this case, you
would have to have a UNC path to the remote drive and then you could setup the remote
MDB file as a local datasource.

I'm certain that there's a way to exchange data with XML or WDDX but I'll leave those
tutorials up to the experts in those areas. I'd be curious to know how one would
connect to a remote MDB file without a UNC connection.

I am trying to pass a WDDX packet to another page through CFHTTP.
I keeps throwing errors on a space in the data. One of the strings
in one of the variables in the WDDX packet has a string in it.
This is user entered data, it could have lots of string in it.
I try to pass it over like this: (At this point Attributes.signuppkt
is a base64 encoded WDDX packet)

Then on the called page I try to de-serialize it with

But I get this error: XML parsing error: not well-formed (error code 4, line
1, column 56, buffer offset 56)

This is because its hitting that space in the data. I've tried running
ToString(ToBinary(Attributes.signuppkt)) before I pass it over, just to pass
it over as a plain text WDDX packet. It is truncated at the first space.

I am displaying the value I'm using in the CFHTTPPARAM tag on the screen, so
I know the data I'm passing over is OK. I've tried using URLEncodedFormat on
it too. When I compare the before and after data (this is before I un-base64
it) the only difference is where there are pluses in the before data, the
after data has actual spaces!

I've been working on this for hours. All I need to do is pass a WDDX packet
between servers.

Big headache now...

No - table 1 and table 2 are just lists of jumbled up emails, with
duplicates (of which one might be in table 1 and another in table 2). It's
very irritating that they exist in 2 tables, but that's the way it is,
unfortunately!

It wouldn't be hosted on virtualscape, would it? Have had terrible

IMail thing, a CF 4.51 thing, or a blocked mail server thing. My

No, you can - it's just easier to set them up when you're logged in to make
sure that the path works. Then if it doesn't work in CF then it's a
permissions problem. I do it this way to make my life a bit easier...

Well, you still need to configure the file in ODBC as that is the only way
for cf to use the access db. I think there are tags floating around that
allow you to create ODBC datasources on the fly.

Is your mail server on the ORBS list? Check at orbs.org. I had a similar

I'm not sure where the database comes into play here. I would think
if you have access rights to the other server, you could just set the

RE: cfmail and aol addresses

2000-12-27 Thread Simon Horwith

I just checked AOL's site, and saw nothing indicating that their network
should be blocking your mail (this doesn't mean they aren't). You're
probably just sending too much traffic from a single address or domain, and
their firewall, Mail Server, or anti-spam software is throwing up a red
flag. Try sending one e-mail and see if that goes through... experiment
with the numbers until you find whatever works best for you. You can e-mail
aol in the meantime, but don't hold your breath waiting for a reply.

This may be unrelated, but one of my friends recently had an issue where his
personal mail was not being delivered to AOL addresses. It was being blocked as
coming from a spammer address. AOL was not the only domain giving him problems,
but the others were relatively small domains. Try sending a message from an
accessible account on the domain that cfmail is sending from to a test address
at AOL and see what happens.

What you may wish to do is perform a UNION query and alias each subquery's
column to the same name. That's worked for me in the past.

Re: Repeat Question still needing help

2000-12-27 Thread Howie Hamlin

Then you should create the ODBC from the CF Server (don't use the cf
administrator for this). The ODBC connection points to the other server via
UNC paths. Make sure that the connection verifies from the ODBC setup.
Once the connection is verified you need to configure the CF service to log
in as a user with rights to the other server.

If you need more detail then let me know.

Howie

What kind of database? In general you can access a desktop or SQL database
if you configure it properly in ODBC. For desktop DBs I'm pretty sure that
the ColdFusion service needs to be logged in as a user with rights to the
other server.

Yes, a site can have multiple collections (actually, fewer smaller
collections are better if you have a really large site).
For dynamic pages, you index the collection from a query.
Yes it can work with fusebox.

Some would argue that having a 60kb image-mapped graphic that serves as the
entire content of your home page isn't effective, either, but that's another

1.) Can a site have more than one collection?

Yes. Just create a collection for each that you need in the administrator or
create a new one with CFCOLLECTION.

2.) How does collection work with dynamic pages ?

Yes. You may create select boxes, radio buttons or checkboxes for choosing
the collections to search through. You may use multiple selects or checks to
search through multiple collections. You may do the same for the search
criteria such as radio buttons for "All Words", " Any words" "On or Before".

3.) Does it work with fusebox ?

Yes. Just use "fuseaction=search" to point to the proper fuseaction.

that big a deal. As I and others have pointed out, a site running multiple
domains, subdomains, or clustered machines may or may not have issues with
dns prefixing. This entire thread began when somebody discovered that they
couldn't type in a site name without the 'www' prefix. If it bothers you as
a browser personally, then modify you 'hosts' file. If you run a site, then
do as you will. That's all.

If a user wants to get your ftp or gopher server, then they can enter the
full URL. This is just a simple DNS issue we're talking about. Forcing users
to enter the "www." when all they want is your website causes many, many
people to think your site is either broken or gone. Witness all the
big-league sites that advertise their domain withOUT the www these days, and
you'll understand why more and more users are leaving it off.

Anyone here go to ebay.com? Yahoo.com? Microsoft.com? How often do you type
the www. for sites like that? I'd hazard a guess that at least 1/3rd of the
general population leaves it off, and at least half of them won't know to
try the "www." when the first attempt fails.

Thanks for pointing out this oversight. The A record for figleaf.com was

Re: Select Distinct problems

2000-12-27 Thread Todd Ashworth

Are these tables related in any way?

What the SQL server is doing is returning every distinct row it can make up.

Say you have table 1 contains A and B and table 2 conatins 1, 2, and 3.
With your query you end up with this

A 1
A 2
A 3
B 1
B 2
B 3

As you can see .. all of these are indeed distinct rows, but probably not
what you wanted.

I'm gusing you want something like this:

A
B
1
2
3

right?

2000-12-27 Thread Jeremy Allen

Ehh, just a personal preference but I like the load balancer
setup to all be coming to one IP and *then* being rerouted not
forcing someone to type "www3.xyz.com" I realize some aliases
are useful but for only the main portion of the companies site.

I guess I should have pointed out I think of it as silly both ways.
I just think for redundancy you should map a very common thing such
as the root domain, to each their own I know to check both but
some people may and do get a lil misdirected at times, as evidenced
on the reason this thread was started.

>having to specify the "www." isn't all that silly.

But it's mostly counterproductive. www.domain.com and domain.com A
records both return the the same ip, WTF else do you want to at port
80 of that ip?

Having an A record lookup of www and domain.com return different ip's
serves what purpose? esp when it has become fairly conventional that
public internet web service be there?

>... what if a site is also
>running an ftp server gopher server, etc. for a domain then you'd want
>to force the www

No "you" wouldn't.

I run serv-U on machine that also has www.domain.com and domain.com
resolving to the same ip.

I ftp to www.domain.com and domain.com and serv-U answers at port 21
of that ip just fine.

It is always advisable, even for one ip initially, to use a different
hostname for each service:

$ORIGIN domain.com.

@ A ip.ad.re.ss
www A ip.ad.re.ss
; the above two are customarily welded

ftp A ip.ad.re.ss
pop A ip.ad.re.ss
mailA ip.ad.re.ss
smtpA ip.ad.re.ss
webmail A ip.ad.re.ss
gopher A ip.ad.re.ss

When you get bigger and move the services to separate machines (eg.,
the mail-related services), you only have to change the ip address,
not add/change hostnames:

@ A ip.ad.re.ss
www A ip.ad.re.ss
ftp A ip.ad.re.ss
;
pop A ip.ad.re.s2
mailA ip.ad.re.s2
smtpA ip.ad.re.s2
webmail A ip.ad.re.s3
;
gopher A ip.ad.re.s4

a fellow employee here also pointed out that the www differentiates a
company from its site. I don't know what the legal or ethical signifigance
of this is but I suppose somebody out there is concerned with such
things. It's also worth mentioning that most users out there are not real
"up" on internet architecture and are most familiar with the
"www.whatever.com" url format. Anyway, companies should just register their
domain name on DNS tables the way they want, and should advertise and
register the same domain name on search engines, if they're concerned with
such things.

Ooooh, one of my pet peeves and you guys just keep pushing my buttons. :)

There is no _good_ reason to force a user to type "www." on your URL. None.
Period. If you require it, it's a geek thing, not a user thing. Of course,
if you don't care about users, then that's another matter.

There is a very good reason for a user to type the "www." on my URL. If they
don't, they will not arrive at my sites!

This isn't a control issue as you contend. I just don't have the time to
modify my DNS for every possible entry that a user MIGHT hit just to access
my site.

Do I register every possible misspelling just in case they are dyslexic? Do
I register everything in .com, .net. .org, and even all the other domain
suffix's? NO!

Why? Because as I make my site more and more idiot proof, the universe keeps
creating better and better idiots!

Eventually I have to work to make my sites more effective, rather then
making it easier to find.

Yeah, but it just makes sense to default the plain tld to *something* (I
prefer the web server), otherwise clueless users will just assume the site
is down and never visit again. This is easily done in the DNS records. If
the user wants anything besides the web server, they need to specify the
machine name too (ftp, gopher, news, mail, bob, whatever).

Well, grouping the dns's so "www.figleaf.com" and "figleaf.com" map to the
same thing wouldn't really be an issue. The services run by port numbers.
dns's doesn't care about port numbers.

Most browsers, etc make automatic assumptions about the port to use based on
those host names however. But you would name the web site "ftp.figleaf.com"
and still browse an http server so long as you used the port numbers, and
protocols etc.

It's actually a very good way to determine how good a hosting company you're
thinking about using really is. If they don't by default map both, I
wouldn't trust them. :)

RE: figleaf.com

2000-12-27 Thread Dylan Bromby

a lot of companies do in fact do this on purpose. some companies route the
3rd level www component to a server or farm on a specific segment of their
network. it can be done using just the second level domain; my point is some
companies use only the 3rd level prefix for security reasons.

I can't believe that's done on purpose. About 1/3 of my traffic comes in
without the www part. Do those companies think people will keep searching
until they find the site? No, they'll probably go somewhere else.

Why should you (a generic you, not a specific you) force the user to do
something like that? Because you can? Because it makes you feel like a god?
Because stupid users should know that if they want to access a site on the
world wide web they should include www in the address? If I could make
people come to my site by wishing I'd do that -- anything that gets the
traffic to you faster and with less hassle is GOOD.

2000-12-27 Thread Simon Horwith

I never gave it that much thought. I also can't think of any GOOD reason to
do it, but hey, to each their own. If a company is concerned with people
possibly accidentally trying to browse their other protocol (or subnet)
servers or just like the way it looks that's their call. I agree
though, it is a silly restriction to place on potential browsers.

MOD math function?

Maybe I should have paid attention in math, but here is my problem.

I have 2 numbers, for example 40 and 4. All I need to do is find out if (40

For some reason, (40 MOD 4) does not seem to be working.

OT Flash Uplift... was Java Letdown

2000-12-27 Thread Dick Applebaum

A while ago I posted an item of how disappointed I was with Java as a
cross-browser/cross platform client-side solution to augment html and
JavaScript.

What I am trying to accomplish is a form for content editing that
includes several textarea-like input fields where the user can
create/display WYSWIG text (multiple font faces, styles, sizes,
colors, etc.)

Dave Watts, the elder, &-)> pointed me in the direction of Flash 5.
Thanks Dave!

I have been fooling around with a trial version... Flash is great, if
a little difficult to learn (at least for my purposes).

I haven't completely figured out the textarea solution (its still
WYGIWYW) but i can see that a solution is possible:

Flash allows you to detect/manipulate the *selection* in a textarea

A Flash textarea honors some html tags , , etc.

So, though I haven't done it yet, it can be done.

An added (unheralded) benefit of Flash is in the use of forms.

When you submit a page containing a Flash form, CF gets the variables
as expected.

What is different is that when you send data back to the Flash page.
You don't need to send the entire page of static html/Flash and
dynamic variables. You just send the variables you want to change in
name/value pairs ala a URL.

For example:

   Field1=#Field1#&Field2=Whatever&Field2=Happens

will refresh only the content of Fields 1-3 in the form... the entire
form is *not* redisplayed.

Great potential savings in bandwidth & improvement in performance!

Not only that, you get great looking forms, buttons, etc.
Animation/sound/graphics are an added bonus.

Anyway, I am jazzed... in the same way I was when I first found CF.

Anyone know of a good book or tutorial of how to interface CF & Flash?

If none, anyone of the excellent authors out there interested in writing one?

TIA

Dick

RE: CFIF not working

2000-12-27 Thread Dylan Bromby

there isn't a known problem nesting CFIFs if that's what you mean.

do this: try placing some characters (i use x's) around the CF statements
and see if they even show up when you execute the page. if the x's don't
show then the statement they surround isn't being processed.

with some debugging, i'm sure you'll figure it out.

RE: CFIF not working

2000-12-27 Thread Dylan Bromby

you might try using IS or IS NOT in place of EQ or NEQ respectively if
you're not dealing with integers...at least to see if that will process.

Ok here is what I have found. isnumeric(formula) is yes, there are no space,
puttin an is in there doesn't help it. But everytime it skips it. I changed
it to cfscript to see if that would help it, it hasn't. What the heck could
be causing that code to mess up.

The thing is with the ZIP1.zip and ZIP2.zip if they are the same it sets a
zero value which is good, then it loops again so when they are different is
when it goes to the formula section. So once it is in the formula section
that is where I am having a problem. CF is acting as though it doesn't even

RE: CFIF not working

2000-12-27 Thread Andrew Middleton

Are you able to covert that number before it is returned exp (number), so
that you never encounter the error, or would this totally ruin the results?
I would wrap some conditional logic around that portion of processing that
traps errors when you are returned a number with E in it (either before it
becomes exponential or after with a stringcontains function. Other than
that I don't know I am new at this, maybe a more experienced developer would
know the answer right away.

Yes positive, see the thing is it goes to the next part, it calculates the
formula thing is when formula eq 1 it gives me a floating point integer with
an E in it and CF sees this as an error since an e isn't numeric. The author
of the tag knew this which is why it skips it if it is a 1, but it isn't
skipping thereby causing an error.

Hey, I've met Dave and I have no idea how old he is...

I respect him because of his knowledge, not because he's older than me (he

RE: showing up as gray Java block

2000-12-27 Thread Dave Watts

> Do you know which classes are needed for the cfgrid applet?
> Can the classes be placed anywhere in the URL space?

You'll want all of the classes in the /cfide/classes directory to resolve
correctly; different browsers may potentially use different files.

You need to make sure that this URL resolves correctly:

http://www.yourserver.com/cfide/classes/

Of course, you'll need to put your server name in. Also, you may well get an
error about not being able to browse the directory.

Here's a setup tip. You generally don't want to allow access to the CF
Administrator through all your virtual servers, but you generally do want to
be able to use the Java applets and the wddx.js file. The way I usually set
this up is to have two CFIDE directories. The first one is placed within a
secure virtual server used for administration, and it has the Administrator
and Main subdirectories which are required by the CF Administrator and RDS,
respectively. The second CFIDE directory is added to all the other virtual
servers as a virtual directory, and only has the classes and scripts
subdirectories.
