Has anyone seen anything like this in their server.log?

"Warning","TID=307","08/09/01","07:24:51","Template: , Ran: 34 seconds."

Why is there no template name there? How is slow page logging useful to me if I
can't tell which page was running slow??

Anyone using Windows XP actually try this and get it to work. Recently
I was talking to some XP beta users who said something to me about not
being able to run Java because XP had a number of dll's with the same name
as Java - when Java installed, XP quit working...

Subject: CFFILE - Confused about functionality...

Hi all,

We have an intranet web site that has a section where the users can upload a

file to the server. What i have is a few questions regarding how the
coldfusion server executes the CFFile tag.

1) If a user uploads a large file, say 1.5 megs, and then attempts to upload

another file immediately afterward, will it cause an error with the
previously
executed CFFile tag?

2) is there a way to determine from inside coldfusion somewhere the
following
information regarding the status of a file upload.

   a) the speed of the users connection (i.e. 28.8, 56k, etc.)

   b) if a can be retrieved, calculate a display showing the status of the
uploading file (like the famous blue upload bar with windows applications).

   c) does CFFILE care if there are any spaces in the file path or is it a
browser issue ? For example c:\Netscape 6\text.txt

   d) IF CFFile is uploading a very large file, will cf throw an error if
another file is uploaded immediately after uploading the previous file or is

the previous file upload inside a seperate thread connection to the cf
server?

Our intranet site has had some intermittant cffile upload errors. They have

occured mainly with my boss when he has tested the system. Unfortunately,
he
didnt save any of the error pages returned by the server. :(

My boss wants to have a status page display showing the user the upload
status
of the file and/or calculate a pause, based on the users connection speed to

the net and the size of the file uploaded, to prevent the user from
attempting
another file upload before the first one is finished. IF anyone has any
pointers or URLs to share, I would be eternaly gratefull. Thanks. :)

Re: Connecting to DSN at crystaltech torough Ultradev 4 on a MAC

2001-08-08 Thread tom muck

This is true, but in order to be able to access your databases from within
CFStudio or from within UltraDev, you need an RDS password. This allows you
to view the tables and columns from the live database and be able to use
them to build your queries. If you have a local version of CF running, you
probably set your own RDS password. When you install CF server, you are
given the option of using the same password for RDS as the CF administrator,
or a different password to be able to access data sources in CF Studio.

RE: UDF best practices

2001-08-08 Thread Correa, Orlando (ITSC)

If I have a "page" request that calls several templates during the
request...

For Example:

+ application.cfm
  + myUDF.cfm
+ index.cfm
  + cfinclude template1.cfm
  + cfmodule template2.cfm

Should I be able to include myUDF.cfm in the application.cfm file and it
will be available to index.cfm, template1.cfm, and template2.cfm as myUDF()?
Currently I'm getting "Error resolving parameter myUDF" with this setup when
calling it from template2.cfm...

If I set server.myUDF = myUDF() in application.cfm I get an "The number of
arguments passed to a user-defined function cannot be less than the number
of parameters in its definition. This call to myUDF passes 0 arguments, but
2 parameters are defined.". So when I pass in two dummy variables
server.myUDF = myUDF('x','x') I get an "The symbol you have provided
(server.myUDF) is not the name of a function." in the calling page... Would
I need to make the arguments non-required to make this work properly...

In this particular case, I'm running this in a hosted environment, so I
don't have access to put them in the /cfide/udf/ folder.

Any insight would be appreciated...

Orlando

You could but what about re-usability outside the application. This is the
reason for the CFINCLUDE of the UDF. There's nothing stopping you from just
putting a UDF in the application.cfm or anywhere on a template. Only
limitation is that a UDF used as part of a CFINCLUDE must be defined before
it's to be used where a page based one can be anywhere on the page (even
after the UDF call).

RE: FuseBox

2001-08-08 Thread Ken Wilson

> I have a huge app to build... actually already started.

While I happen to like FuseBox and use it for a lot of my projects (where
appropriate), I'm not sure that I would suggest you dive into it for the
first time on a huge app that is already underway. Particularly if the
project is time sensitive. While it's not difficult to learn, it does
involve changing the way you do some things and leaves it up to you to
decide which parts of it you care to use and which you don't.

That said, however, when you do get comfortable with it I think you'll find
it speeds your development quite a bit. You will, of course, get lots of
varied opinions about FuseBox here on CF-Talk...most equally valid from the
perspective of the person expressing them. In the end you'll have to decide
for yourself what's best for your situation. But do check it out and try to
avoid falling for any of those old wivetales about it being mostly about
file naming conventions or dictating directory structures.

Yeah, and just how fast do you think I would comply with that request if
they tried it. Only when they went to court, got a judgement and then showed
up with a Sheriff at the door. That leaves me plenty of time to move
everything over to Linux :)

Hi - this has got to be an easy fix. I've got a dynamic form sending a
dynamic amount of fields to a Query. The form fields Level#i# are radio
buttons. Here's the code:

  SELECT empid, skillid
  FROM tblMatrix
  WHERE empid=#thisempid# and skillid=#thisskillid#

INSERT INTO tblMatrix (empid, skillid, skilllevel) VALUES (#empid#,
#thisskillid#, #thislevel#)

  UPDATE tblMatrix
   SET skilllevel=#thislevel#
   WHERE empid=#thisempid# AND skillid=#thisskillid#

The problem is that if the the user doesn't answer that particular
question,
say they don't answer the first question - then this is the error:
An error occurred while evaluating the expression:

 thislevel = Evaluate("level" & i)

Error near line 12, column 8.
---
-

An error has occurred while processing the expression:
   level1

Error near line 1, column 1.

---
-

Error resolving parameter LEVEL1

Okay, so how do I ?? That snippet gives me an
"Invalid
Parser Construct" error, pointing to the first #.
This has to be easy... its not coming to me and I've wasted far too much
time on this little bit of code.
Thanks in advance,

You could do:

OR

You can do all sorts of fun evaluation with SetVariable; it is your friend.

RE: Anyone know what these cf errors mean?

2001-08-08 Thread Bryan Love

I would do two things:

1) do global searches for both of those file names in all of WWWroot using
CF studio to see if they are being called by any of your applications

2) create the two files that don't exist and put a cffile tag in them that
records the CGI variables of the machine making the request to a text file.
This way you can track where the request is coming from.

Last I knew, MS allows you to 'downgrade' a SQL 2k license & use it for
a SQL 7 machine. You'd have to do it per CPU.

> 2. is it possible to lease SQL 7/2000 somewhere?

I think that's against the licensing agreement. You might be able to
buy SQL services from an ASP of some sort (put your DBs on their
server), but I know (from past messages on this list) that the licensing
for that is a NIGHTMARE, so I doubt you'll find anyone offering that
service.

Not unless you've got a good credit card or other financing that you
could use to purchase it. MS certainly doesn't make any concessions to
help people afford their server products

You must absolutely buy per-CPU licenses for use with ColdFusion. The
license agreement explicitly forbids use of CALs with any kind of
multiplexing software (which, according to their definition covers CF).

Depending on your performance needs, you CAN buy a single processor
license for SQL and set it to use only one processor. Then you can
always license & activate the second processor at a later date.

Personally, I've always despised per-CPU licensing as a money grubbing
technique, but At least you can split the cost of two CPU licenses
into two lump sums that way...
(Would you like us to shoot you twice right now, or once now and once a
month from now? ;-)

Hope that's helpful!

I think most software licenses allow that. Of course, if anyone is

RE: buying/leasing SQL

2001-08-08 Thread Bud

On 8/8/01, Zachary S. Bedell penned:
>Depending on your performance needs, you CAN buy a single processor

>always license & activate the second processor at a later date.

That is clearly forbidden under SQL 2000 licensing, unless of course
you have 16 or more processors on your server. LOL

Question: Do I need a Processor License for every processor on a
server, even if some of those processors aren't running the server
software?

Answer: Yes, Microsoft's End User Licensing Agreement clearly states
that a separate Processor License must be obtained for each processor
on the server, as we anticipate that all processors on a given server
will be used to run the server software in the vast majority of
scenarios. However, with today's larger, multi-processor servers,
there exists the capability of partitioning groups of processors
within a single machine, and running the server software on only a
subset of the total processors. In order to accommodate such rare but
realistic scenarios, an exception to the general rule will be made
for servers with 16 or more processors. For those servers, Processor
Licenses will be required only for those processors actually running
the server software.

sql server replication problem

2001-08-08 Thread S R

Hi,

I'm taking my first stab at database replication and have run into a
stonewall.

I'm using SQL Server 2000. When I go to Tools - Create and Manage
Publications it takes me to the server and various databases within it I can
choose to designate as a Publisher. I choose the database I want then I
click 'Create Publication'. then I click next and go to the first window of
the Create Publication Wizard which allows me to 'Select Distributor'. I
choose the same server that the Publisher is going to be on and I receive a
dialog box that says:

'SQL Server Agent on 'MYSERVER' currently uses the system account, which
causes replication between servers to fail. In the following dialog box,
specify another account for the Service startup account.'

I click ok and then this is where I get lost. On this dialog box I guess I'm
supposed to specify another account somewhere, but I already found out that
this account is not one I create here, it seems like someone has to set it
up somewhere else, then I have to enter it here. What exactly is this
account and where does it initially get created? I do not maintain the
server that contains the Database I wish to designate as a publisher and
distributor so I'm going to have to relay the problem to them. Or maybe I'm
doing something wrong?

Thanks for your help

RE: Client Variables Storage Woes

2001-08-08 Thread Leon Oosterwijk

Cameron,

I do not use client variables on this particular system. I was merely
playing with the option. Understand that this is a Linux Server. I
understand that the registry is a text file and means a performance hit as
well as a security risk. however given the development state this server is
in, and the lack of a stable SQL server at that point in time I did not see
any problem with changing over to registry.

I would prefer messages like "Could not open Client Variables Datastore"
over the random crashes of my server, yes.

I noticed errors in the logs (which have since been cleared) that were
indicating CF was trying to clean up client variables and errored.

Yes, because you were storing client variables in the registry. NEVER EVER
do this. On a production machine.

You would prefer "client.thisvar cannot be found" errors all over your app

missing?

Bryan,

I failed to mention the fact that this runs on a linux system.

I understand the fragility of the registry no matter what platform however.
My discussion was merely to highlight the erradic problems that Cold Fusion
seems to experience when removing the access to the client variables data
store. this is to me more worriying than the performance/scalbility issues
related to registry-stored client vars.

The registry is a sort of database itself, but it is fragile and is ONLY
meant to store information required by the operating system. When you start
dumping hundreds of (long?) variables into the registry it hampers the
operating system's ability to retrieve the crucial information it requires.
Use cookies if you can't use a db, but remember that cookie size is limited
to 4000 characters.

CFsetting through a loop - brainfart

2001-08-08 Thread Erika Foster

Hi - this has got to be an easy fix. I've got a dynamic form sending a
dynamic amount of fields to a Query. The form fields Level#i# are radio
buttons. Here's the code:

  SELECT empid, skillid
  FROM tblMatrix
  WHERE empid=#thisempid# and skillid=#thisskillid#

INSERT INTO tblMatrix (empid, skillid, skilllevel) VALUES (#empid#,
#thisskillid#, #thislevel#)

  UPDATE tblMatrix
   SET skilllevel=#thislevel#
   WHERE empid=#thisempid# AND skillid=#thisskillid#

The problem is that if the the user doesn't answer that particular question,
say they don't answer the first question - then this is the error:

An error occurred while evaluating the expression:

 thislevel = Evaluate("level" & i)

Error near line 12, column 8.

An error has occurred while processing the expression:

   level1

Error near line 1, column 1.

Error resolving parameter LEVEL1

Okay, so how do I ?? That snippet gives me an "Invalid
Parser Construct" error, pointing to the first #.

This has to be easy... its not coming to me and I've wasted far too much
time on this little bit of code.

Thanks in advance,

It sounds like someone has performance monitoring turned on and has also

Yes, something went really bad and that message about renting SQL was
duplicated a few times. I caught it before the 200+ copies of it hit the

getting values out of numbered form fields

2001-08-08 Thread Michael Wolter

I have a set of forms that allow the user to search a database, display
matching records and then lets the user select specific records to print.
The search displays matches in a form with check boxes for each record.
So I need to loop through these numbered form fields, but I don't know how
many there might be.

The code I have is:

The part where I am checking for the existence of the field seems to work,
but I can't figure out how to pull in the values from these fields and add
them to my string.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

RE: Anyone know what these cf errors mean?

2001-08-08 Thread Mark Warrick

Neither of those files are standard files within the CFIDE directory
structure, so I would say that you've probably got some bad CFML code
running on the server which is looking for non-existent files. Search
through all the templates for those filenames to locate the culprit.

Re: Zip Codes

2001-08-08 Thread Paris Lundis

Haven't tested the code below yet myself... ANyone used it before/yet?
Had been looking for an elegant SQL based computation... I wrote a much
more complicated and assumption oriented search to facilitate such...
It works not on the circle basis but on a SQUARE basis... a small error
margin in each corner :)

I ask about folks using it to gauge both the speed of it compared to
how I do it and the number of records everyone is using with it...

I have some tables that computations need to run against upwards of
500k records quickly and usably so in a web setting.. My use for it is
people searching for other people or places based on where they are or
will be... QUite typical use I think...

Interested in everyone's input..

Last I knew, MS allows you to 'downgrade' a SQL 2k license & use it for
a SQL 7 machine. You'd have to do it per CPU.

> 2. is it possible to lease SQL 7/2000 somewhere?

I think that's against the licensing agreement. You might be able to
buy SQL services from an ASP of some sort (put your DBs on their
server), but I know (from past messages on this list) that the licensing
for that is a NIGHTMARE, so I doubt you'll find anyone offering that
service.

> 3. is it possible to have the rather high price splitted into
> monthly payments?

Not unless you've got a good credit card or other financing that you
could use to purchase it. MS certainly doesn't make any concessions to
help people afford their server products

> 4. do I have to buy per-cpu license if I use SQL with

(Would you like us to shoot you twice right now, or once now and once a
month from now? ;-)

RE: buying/leasing SQL

Last I knew, MS allows you to 'downgrade' a SQL 2k license & use it for
a SQL 7 machine. You'd have to do it per CPU.

> 2. is it possible to lease SQL 7/2000 somewhere?

I think that's against the licensing agreement. You might be able to
buy SQL services from an ASP of some sort (put your DBs on their
server), but I know (from past messages on this list) that the licensing
for that is a NIGHTMARE, so I doubt you'll find anyone offering that
service.

> 3. is it possible to have the rather high price splitted into

Not unless you've got a good credit card or other financing that you
could use to purchase it. MS certainly doesn't make any concessions to
help people afford their server products

application/octet-stream mime type

2001-08-08 Thread BEN MORRIS

I have gotten a CF Error when trying to upload word documents, and also once with a
.txt file. I am using the following CFFILE:

Some times it throws an error becuase the mime type is claimed to be
'application/octet-stream', and is not part of my accepted types.

So:
- What the heck is octet-stream; just binary code?
- Could this be simply an issue of uploading too soon after CF or IIS has been
restarted?
- Is there any possibility that this could be something on the client end? I have
been led to believe that the mime type is determined on the server side based on the
extension only, and so the client machine can do nothing to screw this part up.

RE: File upload question

2001-08-08 Thread Shawn Grover

Not sure I'm understanding the problem.
Are you saying that when the File selector window appears, you can only
select *.txt files?
If that's the case, then simply change your file type box (mine defaults to
HTML files).

But, this sounds too obvious, so I'm guessing I'm not understanding the
question.
In our case, we are able to upload ANY file type with a similar form to what
you have shown.
Maybe look at your processing page (with the CFFile tag), and see what it is
doing??

My two cents.

Hi everyone,

I'm doing a file upload using standard HTML with the following form:

but it only reads the file contents if the file has a ".txt" extension. I
can rename an ASCII file from a different extension to .txt, and it works.

Does anyone know how to specify a file extension other than .txt and have it
work?

RE: Client Variables Storage Woes

2001-08-08 Thread Bryan Love

The registry is a sort of database itself, but it is fragile and is ONLY
meant to store information required by the operating system. When you start
dumping hundreds of (long?) variables into the registry it hampers the
operating system's ability to retrieve the crucial information it requires.
Use cookies if you can't use a db, but remember that cookie size is limited
to 4000 characters.

Subject: Client Variables Storage Woes

All,

Our Cold fusion 5 server has been experiencing significant problems with our
client variables storage. We used a SQL Server datasource to store our
Client Variables. Before we took our database offline we changed the
administrator setting to store the client variables in the registry. However
our cold fusion server has been displaying erradic behaviour since then.
Random server crashes and no errors in the log files. I was finally able to
reinstate the client variables data source. this has resolved the problem
for now. This does however raise some concerns with me. Cold fusion is not
smart enough to detect that the client db is offline and just blows up. This
does not seem very robust. On top of this. When we had migrated away from
the db client variables cold fusion was still trying to terminate stale
variables in the db after the db had been removed from the list of client
var storage.

RE: buying/leasing SQL

2001-08-08 Thread Zachary S. Bedell

> 1. is it possible to still buy SQL server 7 somehow?
> does the new (per-cpu) pricing apply to this?

> 4. do I have to buy per-cpu license if I use SQL with
> Coldfusion (IIS) to server dynamic webpages? can I buy
> per-seat license for this?

Best regards,
Zac Bedell

We're right in the throes of this, too. We've been operating under the
understanding that using Duplicate() was necessary ONLY when dealing with
complex variables.

Thus,

would work fine as long as session.variablename is not complex.

NOT SO, says MM Tech Support. Seems like cfset ALWAYS sets a pointer rather
than making a copy when dealing with shared-scope variables (session,
application, server).

I gotta test this out, 'cause we've been having some real serious "variable
vanishes" problems, and this could be it.

Sure wish CF worked like it's documented to work.

Re: CF Security Patch - host says caused TCP/IP problems

2001-08-08 Thread Stephenie Hamilton

thanks, i thought as much, but wanted to get a second (or third) opinion
i have told the host as much, but let's see if they take any heed to it...
the thing i am worried about is if CF did not cause this, reinstalling CF is
not going to solve it, they are not only wasting their time, but overlooking
what is the real problem...which down the road could render the server down
for quite some time while they figure it out.

RE: File upload question

2001-08-08 Thread Phill Gibson

Actually, yes, I am treating it like a variable. I'm not saving the file to
the server, but instead am just grabbing the string contained in it. No need
to save the file itself after I have the contents. Our clients have a lot of
legacy files that have been uploaded in the client/server app in times past,
so we need to also allow for file uploads, so to speak, rather than just
having a form field to cut and paste strings into.

Thanks,
