CF is simply displaying whats in the database, which means the symbol
conversion occurred between the source file and sequel

 investigating.

 Hello -

We have a UK client uploading a .txt (comma separated) file
 to a varchar
100 field in our database. The piece of data their trying to upload
includes a British Pound symbol and when the user is viewing
 a report to
check their data, the symbol has been replaced by the letter
 u with a
tick over it. Has anyone heard of such a thing?

One of my clients is trying to decide upon a new webhost. The two that
we're looking at are media3 and CrystalTech. We've heard good things
about
both (and I have good experience with media3). Has anybody had any
problems
with tech support from either of them?

After an hour of being on hold to report that CF server was not
responding,
we gave up and decided to switch hosts.

Re: Dollarformat -vs- Numberformat

2002-05-01 Thread Hatton Humphrey

Thanks for the reply, I ended up finding the cluprit in a difference of
SQL statements... one page had select round(line.price * line.rec_qty)
and another had just sum(line.price * line.rec_qty)... the difference
ended up being on the SQL site of things.

Thanks again!

Bud wrote:

Here's the problem: I recently added a summary report to a financial
calculation page. The page has been using
NumberFormat(tot_tot+misc_tot,9-$999,999,999.99) for several years
(the application has been in live use since around 1998). The report
that I built is using DollarFormat instead. I was told that several of
the totals are coming up fine in a few cases, off by a penny in most
cases and off by two pennies in more than a few cases as well.

First of all, am I correct in thinking that this is a display issue?
Also, which one is more accurate?

I think they pretty much work the same. The main thing you need to do
is make sure you aren't calculating on a rounded number. You can't
calculate on DollarFormat or NumberFormat with a dollar sign as it
will return an error, so the problem may be in the tot_tot or
misc_tot being calculated on DecimalFormat elsewhere.

 For instance.
 cfset tot_tot = 1.022

 cfset num1 = tot_tot * 10 returns 10.22 correctly.
 cfset num2 = DecimalFormat(tot_tot) * 10 returns 10.20, which is
 off by 2 cents.

Yup - in SQL server you want to create a user that only has permissions to
execute SP's. The DSN you set up that the webser uses needs to login using

If you are doing this via the web, then you can use the CF Administrator to do this.
Select the DSN that you want to execute only teh Sp, make sure that you chek the
Stored Procedures check box. If you are talking about using enterprise manager, then
you would need to create a login for the users and allow only SP permissions on the
database.

You can either do:

Oh - forgot to mention - every SP you create you then need to put a Grant

Yup - in SQL server you want to create a user that only has permissions to
execute SP's. The DSN you set up that the webser uses needs to login using
this user.

does nayone know of a way to allow a user to only have permission to execute
stored procedures in sql server and not select, update, insert, delete
permissions directly? i want people to only be able to access the data in my
database from a sp and not directly using select, update, insert, delete.

Repost + more info -cfsets and activepdf

2002-05-01 Thread Janine Jakim

REPOST PART
I have a page with hundreds of cfsets in it--we are using it to kick out
report cards for elementary schools. Each grade card will have over 250
boxes that need filled in using ActivePDF. Unfortunately, when we run a
batch for a class or grade level the cold fusion server cpu hits 100% for
10-30 seconds depending on the number of pages. I have run tests and
eliminated the queries and if/else statements as the problem. It seems to
be in the cfsets such as when there are many of these:

 CFSET GR1=PDFToolkit.SetFormFieldData(GR1, #GetGrades.Grade[1]#, 0)
CFSET GR2=PDFToolkit.SetFormFieldData(GR2, #GetGrades.Grade[2]#, 0)
 CFSET GR3=PDFToolkit.SetFormFieldData(GR3, #GetGrades.Grade[3]#, 0)

I'm wondering what can be done to change this problem as we have 15
elementary schools-with anywhere from 200-700 students per school.

NEW PART
Several folks said try cfscript--that didn't make a change in the
time/resource issue. I emailed the tech support at Activepdf and their
response was:
Per your issue, there are no workaround for this. Except the only think we
can suggest to you is by trying to embedding your application inside a dll
and adding it to MTS, which *may* create less stress on the server but there
is no guarantee.

Do people think this would work? And if so how would I do such a thing?
Thanks

installing application on a linux box

2002-05-01 Thread Steven Dworman

I only have limited experience with Coldfusion on a Unix/Linux platform. The
network department at a client site has CF installed on their webserver, so
that side is settled.
Is there a checklist out there of what I should test and/or change in my

things besides making sure filenames are referenced properly, due to the
case sensitivity in unix/linux.

RE: IsDefined and Form[testvar] question

2002-05-01 Thread Raymond Camden

One more reason to not use Evaluate... in CFMX.

Variables is now a real structure.

So, instead of:

cfset x = 1
cfset theVar = x
cfoutput x is #evaluate(theVar)#/cfoutput

You can do:

cfset x= 1
cfset theVar = x
cfoutputx is #Variables[x]#/cfoutput

You can also dump all your local vars:

cfdump var=#variables# label=My Local Crap

You could do it in SQL, just like you said:

DECLARE @oldSsn char(9)
SET @oldSsn = '#ssn#'

DECLARE @newSsn char(11)
SET @newSsn = SUBSTRING(@oldSsn, 1, 3) + '-' + SUBSTRING(@oldSsn, 4, 5)
+ '-' + SUBSTRING(@oldSsn, 6, 9)

INSERT INTO myTable
(ssn)

RE: Html to PDF, Excel, Word formats

2002-05-01 Thread BillyC

You should be very cautious about invoking HTMLDOC on the server - it
has a habit of leaving its thread running. So, a few hundred PDF's
could bring your server to its knees. One of my past gigs used it by
writing a wrapper ActiveX DLL that used the Win32 API to kill the thread
(after n timeout) if it didn't kill itself.

For somewhat robust document manipulation, check out ActivePDF, and be
sure to check out ASPIN.com for some server-side components for other
file types.

I recommend checking out CF_HTML2PDF3 (can be found in the DevEx), a
free
Custom Tag that generates PDF files. Tried and tested, and very easy to
implement. This tag utilizes HTMLDOC.EXE, and you must have CFEXECUTE
access on your server. My only gripe is that it does not support CSS.

this link:
http://www.sys-con.com/coldfusion/subscribe/SubscribeForm.cfm
but it's giving me a 404 error. Anybody know where I can subscribe?
Thanks.

To be perfectly honest with you, I think that their site is one of the worst
sites I have ever seen. For what subscribers pay annually just to CFDJ, let
alone their other publications, you would figure that they would put
something a big more user-friendly and less ad-intensive.

But that doesn't answer your question, I know. Sorry, just had to vent on
that one. My suggestion would be to go to your nearest bookstore (i.e.,
Barnes and Noble) and look for a subscription insert in one of their issues.
My boss subscribed to it for our department a few months back, and all we
got were timeouts and 404 errors. So I just went down to BN and grabbed an
insert.

Snail mail still has its benefits!!

Regards,
Dave.

Does anybody here know where I can subscribe to the CFDJ online. I
tried
this link:
http://www.sys-con.com/coldfusion/subscribe/SubscribeForm.cfm
but it's giving me a 404 error. Anybody know where I can subscribe?
Thanks.

To be perfectly honest with you, I think that their site is one of the
worst
sites I have ever seen. For what subscribers pay annually just to CFDJ,
let
alone their other publications, you would figure that they would put
something a big more user-friendly and less ad-intensive.

But that doesn't answer your question, I know. Sorry, just had to vent
on
that one. My suggestion would be to go to your nearest bookstore (i.e.,
Barnes and Noble) and look for a subscription insert in one of their
issues.
My boss subscribed to it for our department a few months back, and all
we
got were timeouts and 404 errors. So I just went down to BN and grabbed
an
insert.

Snail mail still has its benefits!!

Regards,
Dave.

Yeah, but I bet they're looking for a database, not an interactive form.

Need NT Authentication Tag for CFMX

2002-05-01 Thread Frank Mamone

Since CFMX no longer supports Advanced Security, we can no longer authenticate against
an NT Domain. The philosophy for our Intranet is that we use the same login as the PC
to login to specific protected resources ouf our Intranet. We use NT groups to
centrally manage these protected areas and using CFAS to check belongs to a specific
group.

I'm looking for a tag which can return that info that I can use with CFMX before we
upgrade.

I looked at IHT stuff as Dave W. suggested but it doesn't seem to have anything that
will answer the question Is this user authenticated and what groups he/she belongs
to?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

RE: IsDefined and Form[testvar] question

2002-05-01 Thread Raymond Camden

My 2 cents - not a MACR official position:

Not using cfparam because it is slower than if(isdefined...) doesn't
make much sense. If your application is at the level where it does
matter, fine, but this won't account for more than 0.001% of the sites
out there.

To me, this is like the argument against using: cfif x is foo as
opposed to compareNoCase, which to me, makes the code much less
readable.

The only time I tell people not to use cfparam is when they using it
like cfset. (Ie, they ALWAYS want it to set.)

It must be a bug then because I am running the same version without
issue. I would submit the bug and then possible reinstall beta 3 to get
the custom tag path back. If you don't want to reinstall beta 3, rc 1
should be available soon.

RE: Calling server code without reloading

2002-05-01 Thread Justin Greene

I just went through a few days of trying to figure this out and found that
the only two ways were using a javascript to load a .gif and passing the
parameters or using a hidden frame and dynamically changing the frame src.
If you have control over the page you are submitting and can cause it return
a .gif content type then the .gif method is the easiest. If you do not have
control over the page then the hidden frame method will work the best as you
will be able to confirm that the page is loaded. I have a URL at home on
this that I will forward tonight as I cannot seem to find it from here.

Lets say I have a form field on a page. When I type in it, I
want what I have typed to be sent to the server and something
done to it. THe result of that something will come back to me
and be loaded into a different form field. This should be
 done without reloading the page.
Normally, I'd do this with a hidden frame and some
javascript. I've been asked to do it some other way using
layers, objects or other stuff. I'm researching it but I
might as well ask if anyone here has heard of something in this area.

RE: IsDefined and Form[testvar] question

2002-05-01 Thread jeff tapper

the cfparam was just a quick add in, so that the form element existed for

Seems funny that you're using the form[] to speed things up, but then
using CFParam to slow it down again...

Much quicker to make a UDF for CFParam and then cfset

Re: Where's Advanced Security?

2002-05-01 Thread Jochem van Dieten

Dave Watts wrote:

Well, that should save some work. Sandbox Security appears
to be Enterprise Edition only, so we will simply leave the
CF hosting business because there is no way to justify such
an investment :(

Yeah, that's a tough break. However, it seems like the big thing you lose
without the integrated security is RDS access. Why not offer the same sort
of access you offer to edit Perl, PHP, and so on? Then, you could take
advantage of the new lower price for CF Professional, and you could justify
the loss of RDS by giving your CF customers a price cut!

Discussing this is pretty pointless until we know what is actually
included in the various versions of CFMX. But that has never stopped me
before :)

I have done some digging and came up with some more official info:

The feature comparison matrix says that all versions have Resource
security, and only the Enterprise editions have Server Sandbox Security.
http://www.macromedia.com/software/coldfusion/whitepapers/pdf/ColdFusionMXFeatureGrid_03.pdf

Developing ColdFusion MX Applications with CFML says the following:
The directory or directories to which a set of rules apply is called a
sandbox, and resource security is also called sandbox security
http://livedocs.macromedia.com/cf6docs/Developing_ColdFusion_MX_Applications_with_CFML/appSecurity3.jsp?

So will it be possible in CF MX Pro to limit the resources a hosted
customer can access based on the directory in which his templates are or
not?

BTW, giving a price cut is not an option. That would mean we would have
to pay customers to use CF :)

Distributing self-contained CFMX apps

2002-05-01 Thread Dick Applebaum

Not really a question, just some thoughts and musings...

One of the neatest (and understated) features of the Neo beta and the
Preview CFMX release is the inclusion of a standalone web server
(along with the jvm jre).

This allows MM customers to download and install a complete, operational
CF system without having to install prerequisite/corequisite software,
service packs, etc... Simplify, simplify!

There were many installation issues in the beta, but MM will work these
out.

This encapsulation was done on all the supported platforms [sigh]!

What is exciting to me is the potential ability to distribute/install a
completely self-contained package on a CD or a kiosk.

With proper licensing, I could include my CF app on a CD along with all
that is needed to install or run it (the CFMF package) on any of the
supported OSes.

Also included on the CD would be the data necessary to run the app,
along with the RDBMS (if open source) or special CF tags to emulate dbs
with flat files (already available).

There have been several threads, in the past, that discussed the
desirability of this.

So, it would be relatively easy to put together a complete application
package (operational or evaluation), burn a CD (in reality multiple CDs
or DVD) and send it off to the end user!

With a simple (if somewhat lengthy) install, the customer would be up
and running!

A variation, would be to install this encapsulated system on a kiosk
where the app could run standalone or, periodically, as an intelligent
client to a remote server (or both).

This could be a real boon to developers, in general, and ASPs in
particular!

CF Wishlist

2002-05-01 Thread David Schmidt

Ok,

Have carefully considered what I want from CF, the most striking feature I
want to see is...

Stop treating empty list items as null. That is a list of 3,5,,,3,2,2
should have a length of 7, instead of 5. Doing this would nearly eliminate
the need for any field names like name=cost_#i#, since HTML sends back
3,5,,,3,2,2 for duplicate text fields named cost anyways.

Y'all know you can hand-code to your heart's desire in DWMX, right? Just
go to the code view, and have at it! I was a huge fan of CF Studio, but
I've also been a big fan of DW. I have to say that in DWMX, I feel I can
work in either mode, but after using it for about a month, I find that I
switch back forth depending on the task at hand.

I saw that someone else mentioned that they were dissappointed that the
right-click close-file wasn't in DWMX. I have to agree on that point,
but hey, I'm amazed at how the engineers merged the functionalities of
the two programs! I for one will be sending in a request that they add
that to the right-click on the doc window-menu by using the feature

Is Macromedia Studio MX, CF Studio 6?

Not exactly. CF Studio, as we knew it, is an end-of-life
  product. It's
  being
replaced with Dreamweaver MX (one of the components of
  Studio MX, I think),
which is supposed to combine the best features of the
  previous versions of
  Dreamweaver Ultradev and CF Studio.

The above is scary since I never really liked
  dreamweaver/ultradev too much,
or for that matter any code/html generators. Just let me
  keep my Studio! :)

You can do this with Flash, also.

Flash has some very nice client/server form interaction (in addition to
all the sizzle).

Re: CFStudio DWMX hiccups

You ought to read the hlp files on that one.
- Find you snippets you want to share
- Copy those to a network drive
- Tell whomever to copy them to there machine
- They can now change them

Not really shared are they?

Also, no way to create shortcut keys for snippets. Bummer.
I noticed that any new snippets were saved in (win2000) C:\Documents and
Settings\mbruce\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX\Configuration ...
and not in the Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX\Configuration ... as
the help file state. If this is not happening to others, please let me know.
To the registry Maybe some neet-o setting there.

The organizers and the speakers are extremely excited about the CFNorth
Developers Conference this weekend in Toronto. So is the development
community, so much so that we have seen a recent surge in registration.
CFNorth is now 90% sold-out. We expect that the conference will
sell-out by
Tomorrow or Friday. If you miss this conference, you will miss out on a
lot
of great things whether you are a ColdFusion developer on not.

With Macromedias recent MX announcements including ColdFusion MX and
Macromedia Flash Remoting, CFNorth has become an international event and
is
being seen as the world-wide premiere of the next generation ColdFusion
technology, on J2EE!We have over 10 sessions just on ColdFusion MX,
exploring new features and new techniques. We also have 4 sessions on
Flash
and the new Macromedia Flash Remoting. Flash Remoting replaces the need
for
XML or LoadVariables. Plus, you can now do Server-Side ActionScripting
 we
will talk about that too!

We have all the major players in the ColdFusion market place at the
conference, so it is bound to be a great weekend. The weatherman

in
Toronto.

David,

Depending on the context of the data, you can simulate the required
behavior by replacing instances of double commas with a comma followed
by a space (or any character you desire) followed by another comma.

For example:
Replace(3,5,,,3,2,2, ,,, , ,, ALL)

You could also use a RegEx replacement if you want a little more control
over how the replacement is done.

The only downside being that the CFMX license will make the cost of the software

It's possible, though not likely.

Bill

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 5/1/02 9:26 AM

This could be a real boon to developers, in general, and ASPs in
particular!

Wouldn't 'cost prohibitive' depend on the client? If they are running their

anyway, so self contained CFMX apps is not only possible, it is more cost
effective for the client as their IT personnel will only need to install

Yeah, but self-contained apps would require one license per app, as
opposed to one application server running multiple apps.

Not to mention resolution of the issue that arises when you have a
client that already has CFMX (hardly a brain-bender, but an issue
nonetheless if you adopt the self-contained app business model)

RE: Distributing self-contained CFMX apps

2002-05-01 Thread Matthew R. Small

If the CF templates are compiled into classes, could you then run them
on any ol' servlet web server? Would that violate the license
agreement?

Yeah, but self-contained apps would require one license per app, as
opposed to one application server running multiple apps.

Very good point.

Matt,

It doesn't work quite that way. because the class files are actually a
collection of callse to Java classes that are a part ofthe CFMX
installation, they will NOT run without the CFMX run time.

Just b/c they're compiled into classes, doesn't mean that they aren't
calling classes proprietary to CFMX but external to the application.

You are going to need a copy of CFMX running.

Yeah, I was thinking that. But as a point of curiosity, you could just
take the CF classes and your template classes after compilation and run
them on any java server, right? Or am I missing something?

Re: Calling server code without reloading

2002-05-01 Thread Jon Hall

Well there are two different ways to do it that I know of. The easiest would
be the xmlhttp objects available in IE5+ and Mozilla. Sending url
parameters, and getting back your data in a parseable format. I haven't done
this but in theory it is very easy. Some code...
try {
  // for Mozilla
  req = new XMLHttpRequest();
  req.overrideMimeType(text/xml);
} catch (e) {
  // for IE5+
  req = new ActiveXObject(Msxml2.XMLHTTP);
}
req.open(GET, page.html,false);
req.send(null);

If NS4 is a requirement hidden ilayers are the only way to go. In which
case, you might as well use the hidden iframe method in IE/Moz. In this case
you would change the src of the ilayer/iframe, and in the page in the
invisible frame you would grab the data you want from the database based on
the url parameters, and have functions in the hidden object that basically
pass the data to functions in the parent page that do the visual stuff like
filling in form fields.
I have a site up that is doing this now for a phone number lookup, but it
requires a login. Shoot me an email and I can send you a demo u/p.

Lets say I have a form field on a page. When I type in it, I want what I
have typed to be sent to the server and something done to it. THe result of
that something will come back to me and be loaded into a different form
field. This should be done without reloading the page.
Normally, I'd do this with a hidden frame and some javascript. I've been
asked to do it some other way using layers, objects or other stuff. I'm
researching it but I might as well ask if anyone here has heard of something
in this area.
 Thanks

AFAIK, JRun is the Web Appliication server, the Standalone web server is
used in lieu of a web server such as IIS, Apache, etc. As such, the

Lists behave the same way in MX as they do in CF5. You can download a
ListFix UDF from cflib.org. It will replace null entries w/ a character

 | Ok,
 |
 | Have carefully considered what I want from CF, the most
 | striking feature I want to see is...
 |
 | Stop treating empty list items as null. That is a list of
 | 3,5,,,3,2,2 should have a length of 7, instead of 5. Doing
 | this would nearly eliminate the need for any field names like
 | name=cost_#i#, since HTML sends back 3,5,,,3,2,2 for
 | duplicate text fields named cost anyways.

RE: JavaScript - Validation of Date - 3 Drop down lits

2002-05-01 Thread BillyC

Use the Date object in JS:

(Haven't tested this, coding off the cuff):

objFrmDate = new Date(frm.year.value,frm.month.value,frm.days.value);
objToday = new Date();

// getTime method converts to ms since 1/1/70, allowing for absolute
date comparison
numFrmDate = objFrmDate.getTime();
numToday = objToday.getTime();

if (numFrmDate = numToday) {
// date is greater than or equal to today
return true;
} else {
return false;
}

Good info on the date object:

Subject: JavaScript - Validation of Date - 3 Drop down lits

Hi,
Does any body have Javascript code snippet that validates the date.

   I have a 3 drop lists (Year- 02 format , Month - 01 format, day - 01
format)
I have to check the date selected by the user is greater or equal to
today's date .
I am combining all the three values

I am stuck with this, as it is giving the int value of the combined
string
(parseInt()) as 0.

I think there is a better way of doing this.

Thanks in advance.
