I'm just going through a bunch of old posts, so sorry if this was answered
already.

DISTINCT acts on the whole select list. So all of prodID, prodmodelcode,
prodtitle, prodcategory, prodsellprice have to be distinct for you to get
the results you want.

Just add 'DISTINCT' after 'SELECT' and SQL Server will automatically
ensure that you don't have any duplicate rows in your result set. Oh,
and go check out CFQUERYPARAM and use it. It'll save you lots of
headaches.

I tried DISTINCT and it still returns duplicate prodmodelcodes. How can I
weed out those duplicate model codes? h

I'll be using a stored procedure for it so security will be covered.

Thanks for your help,

Re: CFUNITED? What's the deal??

2005-01-23 Thread Rick Root
I don't have a problem at all with CFUNITED's increased price. Last
year it was overcrowded and too short... So now it's a day longer, which
immediately adds 50% to the cost.

And I think from the surveys last year, a lot of people were hoping to
see some kind of food and drinks available in the morning... coffee,
donuts, juice, etc... maybe they'll tack that on too.

CFUN at $250 was a great deal. CFUNITED at $450 is still gonna be a
great deal.

They've extended the programs, doubled up a number of the speakers,
added a day and moved to a facility large enough to hold the number of
people anticipated to attend. If you'll remeber, many of the talks
were shoving room only if you were less than 5 minutes early to the
presentation.

I also seem to recall last year seeing something about scholarships
and other breaks. While I don't plan on taking advantage of that, if
you're interested and truly strapped for cash you might look at that
route.

The conference is well worth the money and time to go IMO.

Granted there isn't information listed on it yet, but I guessing most everyone

All,

While I do admit to being a little surprised prices went up as much as
they did, it won't stop me from going.

I think it may hurt attendance more that it isn't over a weekend
anymore. Everyone felt that it needed to be three days, none of the
presentations were repeated and we all missed speakers that we wanted
to hear.

The discounts are posted on the site:

10% off Corporate Group Rate - You must have three or more people in
your group. A coupon code must be assigned to you before registering.

$50 off regular price if you belong to a CFUG or if you have attended
any previous CFUN conference

Government rate is 15% off

Student rate is $199

It is called Usability for the Web, but it is, as much as anything, a book
about the process of building Web sites. It isn't focused on engineering,
though, so you need a good book on engineering projects. How about this one:

 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1556159005/qid=1106424939/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-2345314-2646402?v=glances=books

It is called Rapid Development. It was published in 1996 and is top rated
 software lifecycle book on Amazon.

The other thing you can look at generally is project management training. I
recommend training rather than reading alone because it's all about the
experience. I personally am not big on lots of formalized project management
for smaller sized projects, but having a good understanding of the principles
will help you assess your PM needs for a particular project. Even a small
amount of project management is better than none.

I would be happy to continue the discussion offline if you like.

No, but you seem to just complain about ColdFusion and
ColdFusion-related things. Instead of complaining that you can't
afford a few hundred dollars to improve your skills (really?) you come
out, guns blazing, implying the conference organizers are insane.

Let's look at those prices...

CFUNITED is a three day conference so the early bird price is $150 a
day and it offers seven tracks. Last year about 600 people attended
and the overall feedback from them was More! More! More! - more
space, more speakers, more topics. Even if you turn up on the day,
it's less than $300 a day.

The early bird price for Software Development West is over $530 a day.
php{con was nearly $500 a day (early bird). JavaOne is about $400 a
day I think. ASP.NET Connections is around $350 a day (early bird). So
it doesn't seem to matter whether we're talking 'free' technology or
'proprietary'.

What about training courses? Cheaper? More expensive? TeraTech courses
are about $350 a day (very reasonable). Figleaf? About $500 a day. I
searched around and most ColdFusion training seems to range from $400
upward. Hal's Mach II course is about $600 a day (and well worth it,
BTW).

I'm a little guy, and there are a lot of little guys like me using CF. I'm
just wondering who filled out the CF comment cards at CFFUN 04 and told them
to double, triple, and quadruple the price next year. We little guys might not
 be able to make it!

You won't invest in improving your skills? Don't see any ROI on
training and conferences? Isn't that a little short-sighted?

What about the networking opportunities? Connecting with other CFers
opens up more work opportunities.

Instead of coming at me with a Red Herring attack, maybe you have some ideas
 on the matter?

The price wasn't even a blip on the scale as far as I was concerned -
last year's price was just ridiculously low, in my opinion - so the
only idea I had on the matter was that it's a very reasonable
package.

Smal, Portable CF Environment was:CFEE: Exponentially Expand your CF Productivity

2005-01-23 Thread Dick Applebaum
Posts to this and prior threads discussed:

1) a small, portable CF IDE, CFEclipse for example
2) a small, portable CF runtime, CFEverywhere, for example

It is worth noting that a CFEverywhere package currently uses
BlueDragon because:

1) A reasonable cost redistro license can be negotiated with New Atlanta
2) BD will run in a read-only environment-- you can run from a CD or DVD

So, if your goal is to redistro a CFEverywhere package, BD is the only
available choice

However, maybe you want a small, portable CF runtime environment that
you can take with you to customers and just write code, test and demo
apps (you don't need redistro or CD-based apps).

Well, the CFeverywhere package (Jetty, Derby (or other Java RDBMS) can
contain multiple CF engines (and multiple RDBMS for that matter).

The CFEverywhere I usually use for development, testing and demos
contains several CF server instances (Both BD CFMX).

You can configure Jetty to handle thee concurrently (like JRun, only
easier).

So when you fire up your CFEverywhere, you can simultaneously test your
apps on:

1) Back Releases of BD CFMX
2) Current Releases of BD CFMX
3) Alpha/Beta Releases of BD CFMX

This prolly goes for the Railo CF engine as well (though, I haven't
tried it)

It is really great for validating your apps for compatibility (across
CF Engines releases) and identifying bugs in beta releases)

The point is, that you have a portable, very small footprint,
platform-independent environment that contains everything that you need
to develop/test/demo your apps on multiple versions of multiple CF

Apologies in advance, I am the world's worst photographer!

Here's a little photo album showing CFEE (CFeclipse and CFEverywhere)
running from an iPod shuffle.

The screen shot shows:

1) UL: CFEclipse editing part of a CFEverywhere app that parses the
iTunes Library and makes the tunes playable over the web.

2) UR: Running Phil Cruz's Tracking Tools CFEverywhere app -- showing
the BD Admin

3) LL: The Directory structure of the data files (CFEE) on the iPod
Shuffle The iPod's song library is not shown.

4) LR Whistle While You Work-- Using iTunes (on the laptop) to play
music from the iPod while CFEE is doing its thing.

I didn't take the time to skinny down any of the CFEE components on the
iPod, so CFEE plus 2 CFEverywhere packaged apps take about 220 MB of
the 500 MB I set aside for files on the ipod:

106.6 Ecliipse IDE with CFEclipse
   56.5 CFEverywhere Development System
   34.1 TrackingTools CFeverywhere Packaged app
   22.9 CFCDoc CFeverywhere Packaged app

I also reserved 500 meg for music on the iPod: There are 132 songs ,
9.9 hours of listening, taking 491.5 MB.

What may not be obvious, but needs to be said, is that the laptop does
*NOT* need to contain any CFEE components -- only the OS, a JRE, and
iTunes (but not the songs).

http://homepage.mac.com/dicklacara/PhotoAlbum6.html

.Mac services will be unavailable due to scheduled maintenance from
Saturday, Jan. 22nd at 10 p.m. until Sunday, Jan. 23rd at 6 a.m. (PST).

Again, apologies for the photography!

Many people learn in different ways. I personally see very little ROI

What about the networking opportunities? Connecting with other CFers

Networking opportunities on the other hand are my favorite part of the

Re: CFUNITED? What's the deal??

2005-01-23 Thread Will Tomlinson
No, but you seem to just complain about ColdFusion and
ColdFusion-related things. Instead of complaining that you can't
afford a few hundred dollars to improve your skills (really?) you
 come
out, guns blazing, implying the conference organizers are insane.

I agree it looks like it's well worth the price. I hadn't read the fine print
on the bottom of the page about the improvements to the event. I thought it was
great last year, and sounds like it'll be better this year.

Man, I invest so much in what I do, and I don't mind because to me, CF is an
adrenaline rush. It's just that to a small-timer like me, $450 is a good chunk
of change. Now I realize it will be $400 since I attended last year, and that
helps. I'm just gonna have to hunker down and make some extra $$$ for this.

Thank you for the info!

Will

CFQUERY --- Stored Procedure

2005-01-23 Thread Will Tomlinson
I'm converting most of my select queries to stored procedures and hit a snag
with one of them.

This cfquery works and gives me the desired results for the term peace:
SELECT tblprodmodelcodes.prodmodelcode,
tblprodmodelcodes.prodmodeltitle,tblprodmodelcodes.prodcategory,
tblprodmodelcodes.prodsellprice,
(SELECT TOP 1 imagename
  FROM tblproductimages WHERE tblproductimages.prodmodelcode =
tblprodmodelcodes.prodmodelcode
  ) 'imagename'
FROM tblprodmodelcodes
WHERE tblprodmodelcodes.prodmodeltitle LIKE '%peace%'
OR tblprodmodelcodes.prodmodeldescription LIKE '%peace%'
GROUP BY tblprodmodelcodes.prodmodelcode,
tblprodmodelcodes.prodmodeltitle,tblprodmodelcodes.prodcategory,
tblprodmodelcodes.prodsellprice

I converted it to this stored procedure, and I can't get it to give me ANY
result at all. Anyone have an idea as to why?

CREATE PROCEDURE sp_getprodsearch

@SEARCH varchar(25)

 AS

SELECT tblprodmodelcodes.prodmodelcode,
tblprodmodelcodes.prodmodeltitle,tblprodmodelcodes.prodcategory,
tblprodmodelcodes.prodsellprice,
(SELECT TOP 1 imagename
  FROM tblproductimages WHERE tblproductimages.prodmodelcode =
tblprodmodelcodes.prodmodelcode
  ) 'imagename'
FROM tblprodmodelcodes
WHERE tblprodmodelcodes.prodmodeltitle LIKE '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'
OR tblprodmodelcodes.prodmodeldescription LIKE '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'
GROUP BY tblprodmodelcodes.prodmodelcode,
tblprodmodelcodes.prodmodeltitle,tblprodmodelcodes.prodcategory,
tblprodmodelcodes.prodsellprice

GO

My cfstoredproc is correct I believe.

2005-01-23 Thread Ben Forta
Irked, huh? Thanks man. :-)

Actually, to be very fair to Mike and his crew, part of the problem was I
could not be their Saturday and the earliest flight Sunday was not as early
as I'd have liked. So while I'd have loved to have more time, the fact that
I showed up a few hours before CFUN ended did not help.

But, with non weekend dates this year ... who knows.

CFPOP - returned timestamps GRR!

2005-01-23 Thread Jon Austin
Hi all,

This is somewhat of a complex issue. The scenario works as follows:

1. My POP account receives several emails. Fetching them with CF, the
DATE column of the returned CFPOP query are all the same, for example
01/01/2000 10:10:10. The action is getHeaderOnly.

2. I fetch the emails using a regular POP3 client (Thunderbird 1.0 in
this case), they display the correct date. This client is set to
delete as they are downloaded.

3. I then send some more emails to my POP account and fetch them using
CF. The DATE column is essentially refreshed to the time that
Thunderbird fetched/deleted the emails.

If I switch off the delete after download option in Thunderbird, the
date/time is not refreshed.

This leads me to the conclusion that the DATE column in the query
returned by CFPOP IS NOT parsed from the date header of the email
message.

rant

Is it just me, or is this behaviour incredibly stupid? Is my POP3
daemon (courier pop3d MySQL enabled) broken? Yes, my system time is
correct: synchronized with two stratum 1 NTP servers.

Is there a way to access the raw message source so I can at least
parse it out myself?

Is this wrong, or am I just crazy. What the frig is the point of
having a half-assed poorly implemented POP3 client? God help me when I
need to start using CFFTP or CFHTTP.

And no, don't tell me to use CFX_POP or something else, because a) the
Macromedia implementation should work and b) I'm hosted on a Unix
environment.

Don't even get me started on the broken inline image CID munging issue in CFPOP.

/rant

Frustratingly yours,

Jono

Re: CFUNITED? What's the deal??

2005-01-23 Thread Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC
(blushing) Sean, plugging my pet project... how sweet of you!

Yeah, I'm trying to assemble interest: speakers, attendees, sponsors.
It's a dream, but I've actually had some positive response thus far.
Positive, but limited. We've got a really strong CF community here, as
Ben can attest. Ben and Hal Helms have both been here, probably among
others of note in the ranks. So we've got enough local audience to put
something together, I just want it to be somewhat more than that.

So, cf.Objective 2006 would be slotted sometime during the year when
either the conflict with other events would be at a minimum (CFUnited,
MAX, fusebox 2005, etc.) or its coincidence with another local event.
My focus for the conference is on CF and object-orientation (as the
name would indicate), application design with a special CF-focus,
frameworks, patterns, UML, modeling, etc., which are all things that
the CF Community has a really growing interest in... I think it's
important we foster that interest.

I've set up a special gmail account at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for
interested parties, and there's a couple entries on my blog at
http://cfobjective.blogspot.com... so if you're interested or have
something to say either comment me on the blog or email me at the
account. I'll be setting up a central point of communication for it
once I get a really good feel for how it will take off.

I told my dad I'd hold it in the family room if I have to, so I know I
must commited. Let me know what ya think...

Laterz,
J

Re: software lifecycle/project management tool/process recommendations

2005-01-23 Thread Nick de Voil
Can anybody recommend any good resources on tried and true definitions
of the process? That is where we are stuck at. Our organization lacks
the
experience of large software design so we have no real process. But we
are
getting more and more of it. I've been tasked with learning how this is
done, and presenting it. But I have little idea where to start.

A couple of classic books to get you started -

McConnell - Code Complete (very practical - don't let the MS imprint put you
off)
Pressman - Software Engineering: a Practitioner's Approach (a bit more
theoretical but gives you all the background)

There are a lot of methodologies out there that will give you a
cookbook-type approach. I would divide these roughly into older waterfall
style methods like SSADM, Information Engineering, CASE*Method, and newer
iterative things like RUP (Rational Unified Process, from the same stable as
UML), DSDM, XP. Common sense is probably your most useful guide though.

Good luck

Nick
