More RAM and HD Space you can shake a stick atits pretty weird. I think
though we may have found the culprit though- the AV on our Admin/File
Repository was recently upgraded to a new version and it had a memory leak.

I can't say off hand if we have gotten the exact same error here, but it
sure sounds similar to the one we have gotten when are db server runs out of
hard disk space or RAM.

How does your db server look?

This morning we had a crazy Error where we got the following error on a page

"Not enough server storage is available to process this command"

Anyone have any ideas?

does anyone know of a cf command or anyway to retrieve the actual width and

Re: community threads

2005-04-01 Thread Scott Barnes
bwhah touche...

No, i agree its sometimes very easy to go off topic in mailing lists
and so sometimes the community needs to go "stop..ya know this is a
valid discussion i'm sure, but over there *points to another category*
you can go at it and be all slanderish to one another until the cows
come home..but for this one..lets stay on topic" so once a
majority clicks *boot it* then so be it, its booted - the people have
spoken.

The only thing that I'd flag or ponder is to what % of the user base
is considered a majority. Obviously 50.1% wouldn't work as probaly
30-40% of all users subscribe don't actually actively participate and
sometimes just "READ" or "Subscribe for personal archives for when I
need to search on a problem"...

Maybe you could do a rating point system where people can rate other
posters who help, the more folks who help others get more pts then the
rest - resulting in a collective "helpers" able to push threads
around..

heh ...mind you this approach has been used before in a similiar
concept where you have IRC @Operators... people who as an elite few
can dictate how a channel flows..

;)

i don't see any of the above happening as warranted as it may be.

RE: Set the Log level in CF5

2005-04-01 Thread RADEMAKERS Tanguy
Hi David,

Tried answering this yesterday but my internet connection was down. I'm
also on CF5, but on Unix, so i'm extrapolating from what i see in my
cf.registry file. I'd say maybe try looking for all the keys named log*
under hkey_local_machine\software\allaire\coldfusion\currentversion\. I
don't really know that much about setup so i'm a little out of my depth.

Let's turn this on its head: what are these warnings? If we can fix
that...

That's a bug. I haven't stepped through with the debugger, however, I
believe it a problem with java reusing tag instances that are on the

I actually just finally got a chance to check it out and I think you've done a
great job. It looks fine and there are a lot of useful examples.
I have some code that you might or might not be interested in using as one
entry. It's a fairly simple view cart/ enter billing and shipping info checkout
type of form, but I think it could save people a bunch of time. Would you
prefer I email that directly to you, or are you planning on implementing some
sort of contribution facility for registered members?

I know a lot of you are playing around with the new cfforms right now and I
hope a lot of people will work to contribute to the site.

Thanks for your efforts,

Use THIS scope or not?

2005-04-01 Thread Mike Kear
I'm confused. Nothing unusual in that - I'm easily confused.

But in reading the discussions here I thought it was now considered
poor practice to use the THIS scope in CFCs, and instead using the
variables scope was the thing to do.

But in the CF7 documentation, the examples and literature about
Application.cfc are advocating using the THIS. scope for many things.

So who's right? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick once more?

soap request problem

2005-04-01 Thread Rolf Oosting
I can perform a simple soap-request in coldfusion using cfscript and
webservices. For example:

  ws = createObject("webservice",

"http://#Url#?wsdl";);

  ws.GetPngMap1("#xcor#","#ycor#","#zoom#","350","350");

 resp = getSOAPResponse(ws);

But now I have I more complex request, the Soap-request should be sent like
this:

297

156

171106

376811

4

709

469

Do you know how I can call this in coldfusion? The problem is with the center
tag that has an X and a Y and the bmSize tag that has a width and a height.

I hope you can help me out with this.

K.R.

Mike,

This exact question was disucssed earlier this week, check the archives.
Application.cfc is an exception to the CFC best practices as a lot of its
functionality are abstracted from the user thus require a different play
book.

I just need to balance out some of the bashing that's going on here.

I host a couple hundred sites at CT. In 2 years there have been about
3 instances that have gotten my dander up. That's a pretty good track
record as far as I'm concerned because I get riled pretty easy. Of
course, if you'd have asked me at the time I'd have told you that
they were the bane of the hosting industry. :) Overall their support
has been very good. It's not perfect, but nobody is. It's as good as,
or better than anyone else I've used in the past 10 years, some at
substantially more money. Their servers are fast and uptime is
excellent. They have the best control panel in the industry, allowing
me to do most things myself. All the major CF tags are available.
They use a SQL Server database for client storage (or you can use
your own).

I will personally continue to host every new customer at CT and
recommend them to anyone and everyone that asks. All my clients are
happy with the uptime and performance of their sites.

Help!!! CF Report Builder

2005-04-01 Thread David Brown
I had report builder installed and working. But I thought I would change the
layout of the panels (first mistake). At some point while trying to drag them
around the Fields and Parameters panels disapeard and now I get this error when
trying to open up the panel or when the program starts up:

object: TSpTBXItem, SpTBXItem2
Exception: Control 'vstAllFields' has no parent window
See error log for stack trace

I have undstalled twice, delete the folder that it leaves behind after
uninstall and check the registery (may have missed something). After
re-install I still get the same error.

Any suggestions?

SOT: SQL Server using CONTAINS predicate and Verity

2005-04-01 Thread George Abraham
All,
When you use the CONTAINS predicate, the stemming function works
pretty well. I have a question about another kind of stemming though.
If I want to search for 'China', I also want records returned that
have the word 'Chinese' in them. Is that possible?

Another question I have is about Verity searches. I am a complete
ignorant novice with Verity. Does it help in database searches too?

Thanks,
George

RE: Use THIS scope or not?

2005-04-01 Thread Steve Brownlee
Quick side topic:

This post made me laugh a little because it reminded me of a conversion that
I had with my wife a few days ago. I admit that I'm a geek and use the whole
gamut of acronyms, pseudonyms and terms that we all love. She asked me the
usual, "How was your afternoon?" and rather than the usual "Went great!" or
"It was all right" I decided to actually tell her what I did that afternoon
and I needed SOMEONE to hear it because I was especially proud of myself for
overcoming a huge issue. I'm sure many of you feel the same way sometimes
that you want to talk to someone, ANYONE who could grasp the monumental feat
of intellectual gymnastics that you just performed... So I just had to tell
her.

I spent at leat 20-30 minutes going over the problem, how I diagnosed the
problem, researched it, took a couple of stabs at it and how I solved it. At
the end she was just staring at me, so I asked "What?", thinking perhaps she
finally understood how earth-shattering this news was. She responded, "Huh?
Oh, I was just thinking we should paint the hallway yellow instead of green."

Bummer. I haad my heart set on Sunshine Yellow for that hallway.

Come to find out I was using a poor choice of determining yesterdays
date. I was merely subtracting 1 from the day of the month. Hence, I was
trying to generate a bunch of stuff with a date of April 0, 2005.
Naturally, this mistake did not rear its ugly head until the first of
the month.

Go ahead... Tell me you have never made such a brilliant mistake!

RE: Use THIS scope or not?

2005-04-01 Thread Ian Skinner
The "this" vs. "variables" argument is ColdFusion's version of the old "public"
vs. "private" members' argument of Java and other object oriented syntaxes.

OOP purists tend to advocate an all private/variables methodology. It
encapsulates the logic more completely. But I notice several Java classes that
do not completely encapsulate all their members.

So, my take is that it's up to the developer to decide. There are trade offs
either way, and if you make a well thought out choice one way or the other
based on your requirements you are not doing anything wrong.

Thanks for your response Michael. I have seen endless discussion of
the "this" scope for months.

I wrote the question I did, because I am confused. Use "this" or
not? I've read all that stuff, and now I dont know what to do.

What does "... abstracted from the user thus require a different play
book." mean? What's abstracting mean in this context? What's a "play
book"?

SOT: SQL Concatenation

2005-04-01 Thread Bryan F. Hogan
Sorry for this, but I've lost my mind this morning. Please is someone could
tell me how to do this I would be forever grateful.

SELECT billToAddress1 + ' ' + billToAddress2 AS billToAddress
FROM tbl_orderHeader_archive

If the billToAddress2 column is null or empty this select statement returns
empty. Can someone please tell me how to have it return the billToAddress1
and billToAddress2 concatenated even if the billToAddress2 is empty or null?

Thanks

HTML Tags entered into Form Fields

2005-04-01 Thread Les Mizzell
I've got a client that's insisting on putting things like the below into
a form field that should be text only.

"Here some text and an image to go with it http://www.mysite.com/images/myPIC.jpg"; alt="My Fat Pic"> and
here's the rest of the sentence."

I do, despite my objections, need to be able to allow him to do this.

MS Access is being used on the site. It's a "memo" field.

So what I get confused about is exactly what to use on the add/update
queries to get this into the database properly as perhaps I don't have a
100% grasp of HTMLEditFormat and HTMLCodeFormat and cfqueryparam, and
then what I need to use again on the output statements so his image
shows up properly.

Stupid question, yup..

Search engines try to keep their methodologies close to the vest, but I
have read some past talk about how search engines weight the relevant words
in the domain name itself. That makes sense simply because one needs to
keep the domain name within the realm of relevancy.

Ken mentioned early on in the thread about the concept of spreading one's
business over several sites, based on subcategories of products. Then
inter-linking the sites. That is a good marketing strategy in itself simply
because it is less noise to the site visitor. Domain names are inexpensive.
That old idea of having a short domain name just doesn't fit anymore.

For less than $30 bucks a year.

Johndoestennisshop.com
Johndoestennisballs.com
Johndoestennisrackets.com
Johndoestennisshoes.com

Seems to offer advantages over something like the below

Johndoestennisshop.com/rackets
Johndoestennisshop.com/balls
Johndoestennisshop.com/shoes

Plus this gives more home pages to work with.

Another 2 cents,

Nick

Sorry for this, but I've lost my mind this morning. Please is someone could
tell me how to do this I would be forever grateful.

SELECT billToAddress1 + ' ' + billToAddress2 AS billToAddress
FROM tbl_orderHeader_archive

If the billToAddress2 column is null or empty this select statement returns
empty. Can someone please tell me how to have it return the billToAddress1 and
billToAddress2 concatenated even if the billToAddress2 is empty or null?

Thanks

Bitwise operations in CFScript

2005-04-01 Thread Howie Hamlin
Is it possible to do bitwise operations in cfscript? I have two numbers that I
need to AND together and check for a non-zero result. I've looked around and
tried several things but none seem to work.

Thanks,

Depends on what it is doing, and what techniques it is using. SQL Execution

Looking for some general rules of thumb, cuz I know this depends on many
factors, but are there any rough guidelines or benchmarks to evaluate
whether or not a query is taking too long to execute. Or a method for
going about this

I just executed one that took 46 milliseconds

That's a completely different issue from CFFILE/CFDIRECTORY sandboxing - and
an issue that most hosts have problems with.

Personally I like that CT offers freedom in most things, but it's easier to
manage hosting if you force naming conventions for your datasources.

You don't need to use any of this really.. I insert HTML code all the time
in Access database just like that.. The only trick is when you want to edit
that content in the form field you will have to replace the < > so it won't
cause errors un the form.. Just use something like this :

I've got a client that's insisting on putting things like the below into a
form field that should be text only.

"Here some text and an image to go with it http://www.mysite.com/images/myPIC.jpg"; alt="My Fat Pic"> and here's
the rest of the sentence."

I do, despite my objections, need to be able to allow him to do this.

MS Access is being used on the site. It's a "memo" field.

So what I get confused about is exactly what to use on the add/update
queries to get this into the database properly as perhaps I don't have a
100% grasp of HTMLEditFormat and HTMLCodeFormat and cfqueryparam, and then
what I need to use again on the output statements so his image shows up
properly.

Stupid question, yup..

Running a perl program on WINDOWS from a CF page with CFEXECUTE. The

can either write a file, or use a print command like:

print "Job: ",$run_job_id[$job]," charges:

However, when I run the page, it immediately returns and displays the

I would like the page to "WAIT" for the perl results before displaying

Correct. variables scope is better than this scope in general because
you want to maintain encapsulation (not expose your internal data).

Application.cfc is 'special' but it turns out that you can use

What if you... heaven forbid... just deleted the messages you didnt
want to read form your inbox? I think the CT thread is extremely
valuable. If you want to have the argument of "I'm so important, I
read soo many blogs / email everyday I cant spare the split second it
takes me to read the topic". Well my response is "Unsubscribe".

Honestly, if you dont want to read the message, don't read it, and
boot the thread form your inbox. Making general rules to boot threads
just will not work with the large audience. So manage it on your own.

Use the "variable" attribute of the CFEXECUTE tag to store the output of the
program being run. If the script isn't executing, try putting the Perl
command in a batch file and using CFEXECUTE to run the batch file instead.

Actually, it's good practice to use HTMLEditFormat() whenever pre-populating
variables into form fields. That will take care of the code you provided as
well as any other "special" characters that would otherwise cause the form
to have problems. So you really don't need to do all that manual character
replacement.

Boy is that ever a can o' worms! There is no straight, always-right
answer. You would have to look at what you are charging people for
hosting, how much of that you are turning over to CT and THEN work in
these factors:

1. "How nice would it be if I could do anything I want on MY server?
(CFX's etc.)"
2. "How stable would my server become if only my own programming is on it?"
3. "How many sites can I stuff onto this thing?"
4. "Do I know how to run a server?"

I am responsible for two clients' servers there so I know how CT sets
them up. Its a nice setup, actually. For starters you get your own
mail and stats servers (Smartertools' SmarterMail and SmarterStats).
I'm not fond of SmarterStats, but its free. And I bought SmarterMail
for my own servers as a replacement for IMail when that product went
belly up.

They also give you Serv-U. Its not the secure version though, but its
still Serv-U. Plus your operating system is included. Windows comes
with it too.

That only leaves CF to buy, which ain't cheap. I suppose you could do
BlueDragon's free or $899 versions too. Or you can probably rent CF,
and if so it will take you well over a year to equal your rental
payments. Maybe a good option, especially if you are just starting
out and will be adding (paying) clients over time.

Nobody can touch CT's prices on servers, I think. US$80 per month for
an admittedly basic unit that would run 10 or so small CF sites just
fine. Then bump that up with an upgrade down the road (and keep the
$80 server for a dedicated mail server). Those dual-Xeon, 2gb units
are dirt cheap for what you get. So cheap I almost jumped ship from
my server provider when I expanded recently.

If they put HTML into the form field, you shouldn't have to do anything
special when inserting into or updating the database. When you output the
variable directly to the client as content then it should appear just fine.
The trick is that if you use that same variable content in a form field (on
an update form for example) you should wrap it with HTMLEditFormat() so that
it will not disrupt the form.

> Stupid question, yup..

Not at all. A question, in any form, is generally the sign of someone who
is ready and willing to learn.

Naturally, this mistake did not rear its ugly head until the first of

My position is not that I can't spare the time to press delete, but that the

Great, so you wouldn't click the "this thread should go" link. But if a
whole lot of us don't agree with you on that or any other topic, it would be
ideal if the system were to allow a simple way to clean itself.

> Making general rules to boot threads just will not work with the large
audience. So manage it on your own.

That's precisely the point. Since each thread is different, a general rule
will not do. This allows us to "manage it on our own" the first 10-15 times
we see a thread with the option, not the mandate, to have the system manage
it for us if enough of us want it gone.

And yes, if this thread had a "thread killer" link at the bottom, I would
click it at this point.

Right, thank goodness for thread-based readers. I'm sure many people are

messages its received so we end up deleting the unwanted threads many times

Those are both pretty compelling reasons. Other reasons include that it
generally works well, it is directly supported by the OS vendor, it is
scriptable, it includes several application server technologies, and so on.

It matters to people. Trust me. Go to CF-Community and hit the random button
to see what people talk about. Would you like an extra 200 messages a day?
Some do, but others do not. That is the reason for a community list. For
threads like this, news, joks, etc. All the non-tech stuff that does not
belong here.
And yes, sometime I do have to be a bastard and force threads to be moved to
CF-Community. It's the price I pay to have a popular and targetted mailing
list like CF-Talk.

RE: testing....is this thing on?

2005-04-01 Thread Rick Faircloth
Personally, I think that the "random" thread that is OT is OK...

It can get a little much sometimes, but imagine this as sort of a
virtual workplace. Then imagine a workplace where no one ever
said anything funny, no anecdotes were told, and no passionate
discussions ever held. Booig! I even stopped to share
the remark about our US holiday known as "Friday" with my wife...

Here's a potential solution: If everyone were very diligent about
labeling an off-topic subject, that was not strictly about coding,
with "OT" at the beginning, then those who want to read only
about coding could easily set up filtering rules which simply
delete any mail that include "OT" in the subject. Some would
forget, yes...we're human after all (at least some of us ;o)...
but it would be a way for people to effortlessly avoid OT topics
while letting others have a food fight once in a while to vent.

I use Outlook, so I could easily make such a rule and avoid
all OT discussions, but some of them I like and participate in
for the fun and for the enlightenment of it all. Not every CF-related
problem or discussion is *directly* CF-related... (???)

I know the discussion about SEO was not directly about CF-coding,
but it sure has to do with how I employ that code...

Anyway...just another (OT ;o) thought for the mix...

Rick

RE: SQL Error

2005-04-01 Thread Doug Fentiman
I recently had this same issue with a site that was switched from CF5 to
MX61. Client storage DB was choking on the CFDATA table's data field which
is also a memo field. Solved it by creating a new data source in CFadmin
using the Access driver with unicode support driver type.

Does anyone know why this would occur?

I am using MS-Access and using CFQUERYPARAM tags. The tags are specified
properly such as Integer or VARCHAR types. As well I re-verified that the
field types match the type of data coming in.

One field is a MEMO type field and wondering if a particular character might
be throwing it off.

I have converted all ' and " marks to the ASCII character value.
I was thinking that might be it but not the case.

TIA!

RE: SQL Error

2005-04-01 Thread Doug Fentiman
Oops, forgot to say that I also created a new database, then used Cfadmin to
create the Client Storage tables, and then copied the data from the old DB,
and then created a new unicode supported data source...

RE: Dedicated Hosting

2005-04-01 Thread Connie DeCinko
What about SQL Server/MySQL? Are you running that on the same box or is that
an additional expense? Where I feel the value is lost is when you have to
buy a SQL Server license and CF license for less than 10 sites.
